With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2023/24, we’ll be welcoming back our team of Hall of Famers and guest writers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different contributor every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

You can sign up here for the new campaign – once you’re aboard, you’ve locked in the price of your Premium Membership for good, so long as you don’t cancel!

Next up, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar reveals his initial thoughts for the new season.

The FFS Pro Pundits 26

The 2022/23 FPL season was probably the least enjoyable for me since I started playing in 2009. An unshakeable template, strait-jacket team selections, three wildcards and Chelsea being awful made me count down the days till the end of May.

Truth be told, I didn’t really miss it much. The June break was refreshing and I enjoyed focusing on my other hobbies rather than constantly agonising over whether I should make the switch from Solly March to Alexis Mac Allister.

By the time July came around though, I was fully recharged, refreshed and raring to go and I am excited to be writing my first Scout article for you ahead of the new season.

In this piece, I will be sharing my initial thoughts and impressions on pricing and structure, plus a general feeling of what lies ahead for us over the next 10 months.

FPL notes: Haaland haul, Ake rested + Solanke or Kane for Free Hit? 1

It was good to see the premium assets from last season receive their due – Erling Haaland (£14.0m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.0m) have all been fairly priced.

Having two of the attackers is doable, having Alexander-Arnold + Haaland is doable but going for the popular trio of Haaland, Salah and Alexander-Arnold absolutely kills off the team balance.

The dilemma now is picking between perfectly good assets, all of whom are affordable.

There is no real way to predict which of Martin Odegaard (£8.5m), Gabriel Martinelli (£8.0m) or Bukayo Saka (£8.5m) will score more points, especially in the short term. All three saw purple patches at different times last season, so do we hop on/off or do we just stick with what we have?

The wealth of options in the £7.5m-£9.0m bracket in midfield is absolutely staggering, and my initial thoughts are that I would rather have 3 x midfielders from this category, for say approximately £26m, rather than Salah + two £6.5m midfielders.

The likes of Saka, Marcus Rashford (£9.0m), Phil Foden (£7.5m) and James Maddison (£7.5m) are all capable of huge point hauls on their day and with the captaincy likely to stick on the Norwegian for the majority of the campaign, at least early doors, I just can’t see the value in going with Salah. This could of course change if he bangs a couple of hat-tricks towards the tail end of pre-season.

What this also does is increase the luck factor over skill. In the years past, finding the next unknown gem, an Andy Carroll or a Charlie Adam was pivotal to your squad balance. You just couldn’t afford the big players you wanted without a few of these guys. Now it’s very easy to make a team entirely of players from top-eight sides.

Additionally, no amount of listening to podcasts, consuming YouTube content or diving into stats tables is going to let you actually predict who is going to score more between Saka or Martinelli any given week. That’s just going to come down to luck, or ‘variance’ as we like to call it.

That is something we will have to accept and condition ourselves to. As my friend Pras said on our latest pod, you aren’t a genius if you get it right and you’re not an idiot if you get it wrong. It’s something I need to keep telling myself when I’m on the wrong end of a coin toss this season.

FPL notes: Double-digit delight for Trent and Salah in clean sheet victory

I also want to talk about defence a bit. Apart from Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier (£6.5m), I think FPL have got it grossly wrong this year. I mean £5.0m for Gabriel Magalhaes is ridiculous. Sven Botman (£4.5m) is the same price as a promoted defender! Newcastle United had the joint-best defensive record in the division, that’s ludicrous and it boggles my mind!

Last year we were all about big at the back but now you can get something like Nathan Ake (£5.0m), Gabriel and Pervis Estupinan (£5.0m), basically a top-six defence for just £15.0m. If you do want to go with three premiums, then playing a few of these £5.0m guys in a back four/five could work.

There is no need to look at defensive rotations either really, just play your defenders from the top-six sides every week! The goalkeeper position is the only one you could really look to rotate I guess but even then if one of the Brighton and Hove Albion shot-stoppers becomes the clear no. 1, you don’t even need to do that.

FIRST DRAFT

We discussed prices team-by-team, structure and our initial thoughts ahead of the new season on our first 2023/24 episode of the FPL Wire, which you can check out below.

It’s good to be back!

    Fabianski

    TAA, Gabriel, Estupinan

    Son, Bruno, Saka, Mbuemo, Groß

    Haaland, Gakpo

    (Areola, Baldock, Botman, Woodrow)

I'm tempted by doing Botman > Beyer and Gakpo > Jesus, but I fancy Gakpo to be our first choice up top, and he has massive haul potential. Thoughts?

Looks very template, it's fine. Don't like the fabianski pick though and not sure baldock is first choice (plyed due to long term injury to first choice last season, beyer probably most nailed 4.0 and Burnely were decent defensively).

Not seen much Groß or Gakpo in teams here but the rest of it yeah

I like both, think GroB is a very underrated pick compared to the tendy Mitoma and March. Like Gakpo too and good price point if you need to move him on,

Not completely sold on Gakpo up front or Groß in midfield (prefer Mitoma). I'd be tempted to downgrade Gakpo to Ferguson and spend the windfall on upgrading Bruno (Rashford) and Fabiański (Ederson/Ramsdale)

    First try:

    Leno (Rodak)
    TAA - Ake - Saliba (Botman, 4.0)
    Salah - Bruno - Almiron - Enciso (4.5)
    Haaland - Nkunku - Ferguson

    Must try harder 😀

    1. TheBiffas

It's ok. Almiron could be a nice differential. Not keen on having both Enciso and Ferguson though, both are rotation risks

It's hard to have Trent, Salah and Haaland this year. If you're sticking with all three maybe try rotating Colwill/Fofana with Guéhi instead of Aké (not nailed) and Botman (awful fixtures); you could use the windfall to upgrade Fernandes to Rashford.

Also not sold on Almirón for the same reason as Botman. Newcastle are good but they don't have an easy fixture until GW6. Prefer Mbeumo, Eze or an upgrade to Szoboszlai

Not seeing a lot of drafts with all three of TAA, Salah and Haaland, but I'm pretty happy with mine:

    Flekken or BHA GK
    TAA / James / Estupinan / Cash
    Salah / Saka / Mitoma / Mbeumo
Haaland / Nkunku or other 7.5

    (4.0GK / 4.5MID / Beyer / Bell)

    The £4.5m Botman debate.
Like many I was initially licking my lips at Botman due to his insanely low price for a player who scored 129 points (13 cleansheets) last season. I have since completely U-turned and ditched him from my team. Current ownership is already over 30% and I would expect that to go closer to 50% by kickoff as 'word gets around'. Due to the already high ownership % it is highly unlikely he will get a significant price rise early doors, in fact I predict the exact opposite ''IF'' Newcastle concede a goal against Villa in GW1 then people may well jump ship. Their next three fixtures are AWFUL (mci, LIV, bha), there is simply no enticement to transfer him in after GW1.
On the flip side there are other £4.5m defenders from teams with great opening fixtures whose price may well rise in the same opening period. Players like Webster, Hickey/Henry and although no one is talking about Everton defenders, I think Mykolenko could fly out of the blocks. Mykolenko + Hickey are my starting £4.5m picks for GW1-4, I will then hop over to Botman for GW5 and hopefully make £0.1m profit on the way.

    1. Scapegoat Salah
      • 9 Years

People won’t be swapping out 4.5m defenders if they concede early on.

There will be more pressing matters, I think he needs hedging against in some way (Newcastle defense).

    2. Big Mike
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 10 months ago

Not necessarily. I've got Botman but he's on my bench for Gwk 1. My guess is that he will increase in price quickly as more people move to buy him when Newcastle's fixtures improve after Gwk 4.

      1. LangerznMash
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

This is kind of my point...
Pointless owning him from the start if you're not going to play him until GW5.
He won't go up in price until after GW4.

    3. Eyes of Blue
      • 3 Years

I tend to agree. Defenders are more reliant on good fixtures than any other position, and he’s not gonna rack up many attacking returns so most of his points are gonna come from CS’s. Yes he’s a great 4.5m option - probably the best - but only when he has the fixtures to benefit from it.

So many are mentioning him! If he was 5 million, nobody would pick him when you have Gabriel/Saliba, Estu at 5, and a wealth of top defenders for only .5 more (5.5) in the likes of Shaw, Chilwell, Stones etc.

I get what you mean, but i think Botman could be a season keeper for me.
If they do concede early yes possible of price drops, but i can see more putting him in after the opening fixtures anyway
Can already see my transfers in motion 'great, i need Salah in ASAP so i need 5 transfers to afford him'

I watched a lot of Newcastle last season.

Okay, you got me, I watched every Newcastle game last season.

Botman was pretty damn unlucky not to score 3-5 goals. At least 2 clearances off the line. That would have added another 18-45pts if you include bonus...

I stood back from all the Botgasms and thought, "I wouldn't want to start him until GW5 or even GW6." Whether or not his price drops, I'd rather have a 4.5 with easier fixtures before then, One Chelsea central defender will come in at 4.5 - he'll be good from GW2. Botty can wait.

    First draft currently looking like

    Flekken, Areola
TAA, Gabriel, Estupinan, Tete, Baldock (or other 4.0m)
    Rashford, Saka, Maddison, Martinelli, Gross
    Haaland, Awoniyi, 4.5 fwd

Torn between going TAA or Salah....

Yeah mostly looking at 3-5-2 but happy to play Tete in a 4-4-2 if and when needed. Obviously this is just a first draft, going to look at one with Salah and without TAA as well

I prefer Salah to TAA but can see the case for either

With this team, can't help but think that you can do better than Awoniyi up front. Arsenal, United, City and Chelsea in the first six GWs

I dunno, Foden may be central this year given he took over from KDB in the CL final, leaving them with:

          Rodri
          Phillips
          KDB
          Kovacic
          Foden

Yeah, i had AWB for a while and have been looking at him too.

Victor Lindelöf turned out useful too, a route into the Man Utd defence is useful for a steady supply of clean sheets.

Especially if Shaw isn't assisting much.

Having the same dilemma, in terms of pure stats both look very good picks based on their minutes expanding into next season. Given the minutes risk and additional rotation given Brighton being in Europe too the logic seems to go with the one that cost's the least: Enciso. I also think Jesus is probably a better pick than Maddo to begin with given fixtures and Spurs having a new manager / unknown formation - also potetnially no Kane for Maddo to feed. Also feels easier to downgrade Jesus to one of the multiple 7.5 FWD's than trying to find a replacement for Ferguson if things go pear shaped.

So all in all leaning Enciso currently but pre-season will give us some more clues

Wouldn't want 2 fours. The best place to save money is on your third striker. There are good 4.5 defenders but strikers don't get reasonable until about 7m.

But it fldoes allow 6.5m of upgrades to your Luton, SHU and Burnley players.

      • 5 Years

The only thing I'd compare them on is the possibility that MacAllister might at some point get penalties if Salah misses another one since Mac is great at them. But even then Klopp tends to back his man so I wouldn't be too sure. I'd expect MacAllister to do something akin to Wijnaldum, pick up something like 10-12 returns over the course of the season but predominantly be there to work the midfield, keeping the press going high and trying to turn the ball over as high as possible, and keeping the ball moving when Liverpool have it

      1. NotNowKato
        • 13 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

That *might* be Dominik Szoboszlais job.

I see Mac Allister playing an advanced central midfield role and getting returns like prime Lampard - collecting clearances and banging them in from just outside the penalty area.

In transition I can see him being the link man for the out balls to Salah etc and then pushing on to press any defensive clearance.

        Just my opinion though obvs.

          • 5 Years

I think both of them will do it tbh, much like years ago when both Wijnaldum did and Henderson had the legs to do it. They both spent a lot of time covering Robbo and TAA bombing forward, but also carried the ball up the pitch very well. But both Mac and Szoboszlai are more incisive on the ball so they can certainly do more damage themselves

Lots of talk among Liverpool fans about them playing a 3223 next season, which would see both Mac Allister and Szoboszlai playing as the more advanced 2. Have to wait and see though I suppose.

Yeh, and that has a couple of knock-on effects people are not seeing. Those 2 will take the creative responsibilites, feeding the front 3. Robbo will need to tuck in at the back, and Trent will sit deep in midfield, assisting the assisters. I don't think either are good options this season. Bleasphemy around here, i know.

Szoboszlai also apparently has a tendency to drift wide which could make Salah even more central and devastating when they attack.

Was torn on risking mcneil or get newcastle tonalli but to challanging and mcneil takes corners and fk

I'd agree personally, if the end of last season was anything to go by then Robbo won't have much attacking threat (bar FKs and corners) with TAA sitting higher up. I'd just save money and go VVD/Konate or even Alisson if you want Liverpool defence, he's generally good for bps

Think I’d start Stones ahead of Botman gw1.

Sorry for reposting, this went under old article before I noticed and read this one. However, since we don't which of the 3 best Ars mids is going to score as written above, here is the solution for the problem mentioned above^!

(This is almost certainly not going to be my team, but there is probably going to be a lot of different teams this season:)

    Pickford / Areola
    Shaw, Estu, Cash, Pinnock, Baldock
    Saka, Marti, Øde, Rash, Son*
    King Erling, Wissa* / Woodrow

0.5 itb, so Son and Wissa could be for example Jota and Gakpo if the fear of gw2 demands it. (Shaw is also only place holder for 5.5 atm.) Son to someone cheaper pre season star allows to make improvements. And I do like my midfield price points! I can sell basically any mid to buy the first worthy bandwagon

I've finally had a look at making a team (my main worry was deciding what movie-related team name to go with and I have a few I like currently), so I think my main decision currently is:

    A) TAA + Paqueta
    B) 4.5 + Rashford
    C) TAA + Mount

  20. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…
    • 16 Years

Good article. But no one calls luck 'variance' unless they are looking for a boot up the hole.

Also the fact there is good players at similar prices does not mean that those good players will all equal good points at once. There will be player drops in form even from those in same team. And people will be tempted to switch or wonder wether to stay with the player.

I remember one year I had Sturridge and Suarez but kept picking the wrong captain between the two for example.

Lots of options for Liverpool in midfield and attack if they sign Lavia.

In CM: Henderson, Lavia, Fabinho, Jones, Tiago, Mac Allister
In FW: Salah, Jota, Nunez, Gakpo, Diaz, Szoboszlai

Means they can let Elliott go on loan too and they would still have two players for every position in the front three and the midfield three.

Doubt Elliot goes on loan. Current rotation by position is:

        Fabinho/Lavia (if he signs)
        Mac/Jones
        Hendo/Elliott
        Szoboszlai/Gakpo or Jones/Elliott

I’m a Liverpool fan. Liverpool are likely to play with 3 5 3, with TAA in midfield. This means:

    1) Robertson will likely play as a left sided defender and will have his attacking runs curtailed. If Liverpool sign a left sided defender, he may be dropped.
    2) TAA is worth the 8 mill
    3) The front 3 will be Diaz - Gakpo - Salah. Diaz could be dropped for Jota and he’s the most risky pick. Gakpo and Nunez will compete but Gakpo has it at present unless Nunez explodes in pre season. Salah is obvious.
    4) The 4 mids other than TAA will be Fabinho, Mac Callister, Henderson and Szoboszlai. Henderson is the risky pick. Thuram could still come in and replace him. Lavia is a succession lan for Fabinho. Thiago has an offer on the table from Saudi.
    5) Defence would obviously be currently Robbo, VVD & Konate. Robbo could drop out as indicated in 1)

This may be obvious but thought I’d condense the info here for those who were unsure.

more of a question if you would rather have 4.5/5mil defender + 8 mil mid/attacker or vice versa. at least from the get go it's hard to find sub 6mil options in mid/attack worth having

      unless you're playing 4 back

      1. Arteta

I was about to post a similar comment. There are a lot of cheap defenders (£4.5m) nailed to start and not a single striker. So if you can have two guaranteed starters for the same money, it's kind of a no-brainer if you're trying to build a team made of 15 playable assets.

    A) Mitoma

Brighton's attack is loads better than Brentford's which leans me towards Mitoma. But Mbeumo is likely to play up front and be on penalties which leans me towards Mbeumo...
