From data analysis to personal stories, the Community Articles section of Fantasy Football Scout is home to some thought-provoking, user-penned pieces.

In the article below, nine-year member Nigel The Crab discusses mental health and the approaches he’s using to ensure he has an enjoyable season.

In December 2022 I wrote about playing FPL with ASD/ADHD, how challenging it can be and how I was experimenting with a very specific (well odd) approach.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I completely failed and effectively nuked a good start to the season by finishing in the lower depths of 3m+. It turned out to be a blessing as I learned a lot about myself through playing the game and what to do this season to manage the game through the lens of my neurodiverse eyes.

I want to start by expressing how much I love this game. And I really do. I recently lost my father to cancer and having this game to look forward to has been most welcome, whilst recognising that the addictive nature of this game hits hard on mental health when we place too much meaning on it.

What I’m going to share here isn’t going to be ground-breaking, it’s going to comprise of some likely very well-trodden aphorisms and long-known strategies. The hope is that some of this will be helpful and will make a difference to someone reading it.

Why do we obsess sometimes over things like FPL?

A lot of the time it’s to give us a sense that we have control over our lives. When I was unhappy in an old job, I focused on specific things in my home, organising things in particular ways and having routines that gave a semblance of control. FPL gives us that sense of control because it engages our frontal lobe, the logic centre of our brain that we use for planning, organising and logical thinking – as well as controlling our emotions. The more engrossed we are in FPL the more we stimulate that part of our brain and more control we feel we have. The greater the illusion of control, the bigger the crash when the game doesn’t go the way you wanted, and then you re-enter the cycle of trying to gain control. As an autistic adult, I can tell you that this isn’t just mentally exhausting, it’s physically exhausting too. It ruins the game at times for me.

My takeaways from last season of the FPL season, and indeed life that encompassed it was to consider the things in life right now that I perceived outside of my control that I was using FPL as a crutch for. Some people procrastinate, some people run around busying themselves, whereas some of us will engage FPL for hours and hours instead of dealing with an issue.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Here are my personal ASD/ADHD FPL approaches to 23/24 season:

1. One team that you treat as if it’s someone else’s and another you treat as transfer city!

Yes, this is another way of saying “have more than one team” but there’s more to it than that. Having a team you give yourself carte blanche to spam transfers with gives you freedom to make changes without pressure. You know it’s not really going to be competitive if you take a -28 for the 3rd week running (I should know, I’ve done it) so give yourself permission to create that knee-jerk team that indulges that need. You may find it diminishes the need to do so. I’ll be running a team in honour of my Father as well as my own that I’ll knee jerk transfers with. My father wasn’t one for frivolous transfers or last minute changes and whilst this might seem odd, it’s about creating enabling constraints, a workable structure and set of boundaries within to operate in. It asks “how can I be more responsible with this team?”.

2. Avoid FPL content on a Saturday morning

This might seem extreme but I must have taken at least 60 points in hits alone responding to content on a Saturday morning. It just isn’t worth it. If you’re like me, my autism can often manifest in a complete mistrust of my own judgement. So watching live streams 10:30am on a Saturday morning can be fun but it’s going to put second doubts in your mind. Yes you are going to miss those random Pep benchings but I still lost my mini league to someone who only logged in once a week on a Thursday! Avoiding content on a Saturday morning is as much managing the overload on a matchday and reducing pressure to make likely pointless decisions.

3. Hedge your bets

You’ve just transferred out Phil Foden for Kai Havertz, in your mind it’s the right thing to do this Gameweek. But lo and behold it doesn’t work out and you kick yourself for the absurdity of the move. You entered into that transfer with too much hope and no alternative reward system, and for neurodivergents we desperately crave the dopamine. You need a win-win scenario. When I was a QPR season ticket holder I used to bet against my own team! Small amounts, so if QPR won, hurrah, massive dopamine hit. But if QPR lost, hurrah that was dinner paid for! I’m certainly not advocating gambling, instead I’m talking about limiting the impact of a decision upon your mental health. Let’s say Kai Havertz has had a stinker of a game, but you agreed with your wife you’d have a curry if he did and you just love a Garlic Chilli King Prawn. From that point onwards its Garlic Chilli Kai Prawn Curry everytime he blanks! It sounds silly but sometimes the silly things bring the levity we need.

4. Player Play-offs

My autistic brain simply cannot cope with too much choice. So much so that we had a ‘World Cup of Names’ when it came to determining my second daughters name. It’s something I apply with FPL too when I have to make a choice between, for example from a pool of players from a price point, or two price points. I’ve got 8 players to pick from and my brain will melt if I start going through endless stats, and I LOVE the stats of this website, they’re fantastic. However at the start of a season that’s tricky when there’s no data! Instead I pair off players and play them off against each other before narrowing them down to a singular pick. It might look a little bit like this

Section A winner plays Section B winner

Phil Foden vs Kai “Garlic Chilli” Havertz

Section B winner plays Section A winner

Bryan Mbeumo vs Pascal Gross

And then simply I’ll go with either who I fancy more or whatever data I’ve got. If I didn’t take this approach I’d likely crowbar them all in, end up with a terrible defence and forward line and wonder why I couldn’t have simply made the choice of going just with Pascal Gross because he was on penalties! This isn’t really about process, it’s about narrowing choices through a filter that works for you. As the season progresses the player comparison section of this very website makes this filtering process even easier and synergises well with the ‘player play-off’ approach.

5. Match Of The Day Challenge

When I’ve really felt the pinch of addiction I’ve gone mobile phone cold turkey on a Saturday. My family deserve my time and attention not my being glued to various audio commentaries and live score apps. Towards the end of the season I’d leave my phone at home and avoid all football until MoTD. It isn’t easy. It requires a lot of will power but I found I enjoyed football and FPL so much more when it wasn’t taking up the entiriety of a Saturday!

With these five approaches I know I’m not just going to have a better season, I’m actually going to enjoy the season and be more present around my loved ones. You likely have your own suggestions, likely much better than mine and some I’m certain I’d benefit from and if you do, please drop them in the comments section. Thank you for reading and here’s to a new season of kind mental health as well as great football.

Apologies I didn't intend the first comment on your article to appear critical. Sorry to hear about the loss of your father. It's great that you are talking positive steps towards your mental health and looking out for other people 🙂

That's better mate! Take the story to heart rather than looking at the negatives. I assure you more than 50% of entries are double/triple ups. I admire both the prose of the article but also the meaning behind it. A well worth read that may help some. Also hats off for FFS to post it ,as there is a level of encouragement to disengage which negatively impacts the profit made by the site.
On your point Langer, I read about the gambling bit which I hate, but the context was very well put.

Regarding the gambling, i'd never bet against my own team (i'd double down if anything!) but when I used to go to Leeds matches I'd bet on 'under 1.5 goals' so if the match was boring i'd at least earn my ticket price back lol.

My only bet of the year is the contribution to my mini league. In a way it is gambling but I treat it as prize money. I woyld be a millionaire if I bet against my own side (smile)

I'm sorry to hear about your father, Nigel. Thank you for representing the neurodiverse.

I'm due to have an ASD assessment in a few months, and I expect to be diagnosed. I've definitely used FPL obsession as a way of coping over the years.

But this game is not a great outlet. It creates an illusion of control. It doesn't matter how much time you put in, you will still likely get shafted in GW1. As soon as you accept that the game becomes much more enjoyable.

Well said mate. Deli Ali has already had an impact (smile) I wish you the best. I think one area few seem to deal with is their own assumptions of why they do things. West Ham seem really bitter that Rice has joined us. “No player is bigger than the club”, they wouldn’t have said that if he’d gone to Man City. Bitter, small club

Looking forward to seeing how Havertz fits in. Could be the best value Arsenal attacker...

I hear you but I cannot help but think Xhaka had hidden qualities which were not so obvious. Rice will make a difference I am sure but Xhaka was tried and tested, especially with his initial run in with the Arsenal supporters. I hope the rest of his career goes wall.

Xhaka had a lot of negative qualities too, I would have had him out of the club a long time ago, also don't rate the Havertz signing at all but really hope Arteta gets it right as want Arsenal to do well again

For sure he did but I have always respected the "journeyman" footballer who counters his weaknesses with extra work and a quality diversity. Milner and Hendo are examples and there are many. I fully understand why you wanted him gone but I do think there was massive improvement in working on his character from divisiveness to leadership. Probably growing up.

Xhaka is a fantastic player, and the move did confuse me at first.

But it might be similar to United's tactical shift. Ten Hag mentioned they lacked mobility in their midfield last season, maybe Arteta identified something similar. Those deep-lying playmakers like Xhaka and Eriksen help you progress the ball but lack the mobility of an 8.

Ideally, you have those qualities of a deep-lying playmaker in your #6, like Rodri or Casemiro. This frees the 8s to get forwards and attack. These all-round 6s are extremely hard to find, but maybe that's why Arsenal splashed £105m on Rice...

This bit I understand. I think the timing of the transfers indicate Havertz will fit into Xhaka position. A lot needs to change to get that to work IMO. Your post is spot on and your opinion is well founded.

Come to think of it, I think Liverpool have had similar problems with Thiago. Fantastic player, but he's not really worked as an 8. Lacks mobility. Mac Allister is a better profile of player.

Very true. Mac could make a big difference. A i little surprised they spent so much money on both Mac and Szobaoszlai who can both play anywhere on the pitch. Getting into position off the ball quickly has been a noticeable change in the last few seasons. Pool will gain from that for sure.

Having mobile 8s should massively help with pressing too. Noticed that in the United's friendly game, Mount was pressing with the frontline - never seen that with Eriksen.

I think Liverpool will be much better this season, offensively and defensively.

He can also cover more attacking position and yeh i know he can cover the bench as well but at 7.5 hes in for me him and saka .

Hi , there is positive as well re mental health . Im a compulsive gambler and with fpl i put £10 a week in a mini league but more to the point it occupies my mind and i find myself enjoying something with a small amount at risk . I actually started off changing my team most weeks to pursue the £10 'rs now i want to concentrate on the full season and do well overall and for me and most compulsive gamblers it i nigh on impossible to enjoy a game as such without actually striving for a monetary gain. SO WATCH OUT COMMUNITY !! im taking it serious now !
I used to play play the horses mostly but actually it was the studying , the chance to prove you know best but unfortuanley that cost me a hell of a lot more money wise and of course a massive negaTIVE effect on my mentalhealth . Im not gonna say ive found the perefect cure and it wouldnt work for everyone but its worked for me and i may fall of the wagon but for now all is good and i just wanted to let you guys know about the positive side .
    Good luck

Nice article Nigel. Sorry to hear about your father. My son has ADHD and although he's only 3 (and won't be wasting his days with FPL any time soon), I always find it helpful to read anything that I feel gives me any sort of a better understanding of what he deals with or anything I could do to help him, whether it's right now or later on down the line

My Bookkeeper has the same issues and has become part of my family. Super intelligent but needs calming down sometime. I could not do without her. An arm around someone always makes both feel better too.

Do we think Gabriel still the pick of the Arsenal defenders?

He's definitely a good pick, good goal threat. I'm on Saliba personally as he hoovers up the bps and is a threat too from setpieces but can understand the Gabriel pick

Hard to know but I think Timber will deputise for Saliba when unavailable or in need of a rest, he might otherwise take the RB spot from White or deputise for him too, I'm not too sure how soon he'll become a starter. White had a really good second half of the season last year and is constantly improving in his attacking play

Excellent article. Thank you for sharing.

It is an article that needs reposting every week during the season, and expanded on by others willing to share experiences and/or knowledge on mental health in the FPL world.

We all spend too much time on FPL, and many are addicted. This is the reality. Understanding why, it’s positives and negatives, and how we might resolve these issues is critical.

The one major issue I have with FPL is that it is an easy thing to go to in my brain, almost as if to keep it active, and because of that it’s highly addictive. By the same token however, is that the more I think about FPL the more I retreat from the outside world - whether that is a career, a passion/hobby such as reading, or a family event. It distorts my experience of them, often negatively.

Essentially, I think I experience my life through an FPL lens, whether I like it or not. This is a decision I have made in the past, and I have not played the last few seasons completely (I stopped for the World Cup and never came back).

On an individual note I’d rather engage my brain in more meaningful things, but that certainly doesn’t mean I should just ignore FPL. After all, it’s a hobby that has productive influences. However, the balance I have on it is all of the place.

I truly enjoy living without FPL, but something draws me back all the time. I’m almost certain it’s hope because it always happens in the pre-season period.

But when I do play, there are two things that help.

    1. Ask yourself “so what”? - does it really matter if I haven’t done well on a game I play for myself?. What is more important in my life that should require my attention and skills?

    2. Limit social media regarding FPL. Whilst indulging in content is fun, easy to do, and informative, it equally feeds off of your addiction. Any seasoned FPL manager should now be able to experience an FPL season without many of these tools and videos. Of course, there is content out there you truly enjoy and who am I to say to decide what you should do. But by being aware of the reason for consuming this FPL content and stopping yourself when it becomes almost a habit rather than a help is crucial.

Anyway, I am absolutely positive more needs to be researched, discussed, and shared regarding mental health and FPL. The illusion of control is one of these complex facets of the reality. So thank you Ben for sharing.

I really like that Dele Alli shared his story too. Especially how he linked addiction with trauma.

I completely agree that there is a link.

On a personal level, I went through something very traumatic and that coincided with an FPL addiction. You also have urges to impulsively do other things all the time. Out of all the things to get addicted to in this content, FPL definitely isn’t the worst.

Yeah, I brought this up above. What I have picked up from responses to the article is the warmth people have in their replies. As Nash says above, don't let it consume you. But I do believe it is a character trait many who play the game have. It's not all bad but we all need to make individual efforts to stop anything that consumes us.

Mental health will always bring a warmth, but what is unique as you say here I think is because we all have experienced it to some degree, and thus empathy is easier because we really can understand it.

Character trait is a really intriguing idea - another one of those things more qualified people might be able to enlighten us upon.

You can completely, and I’m glad you do. Keep going. At no point have I told you otherwise here.

Preaching Vs advice are two different things. The fact you’re on this site sums it up because surely then you’ll just think everything is preaching.

It's not typically listed on any menu, I have to ask for it to be made. Most good curry houses will make it. But like you said, a decent curry house isn't always easy to find. Maybe an FPL Curry night during the season should be on the cards?

    Current draft

    Pickford
    Estupi Ake Gabriel (Pau Baldock)
    Salah Mitoma Bruno Foden Saka
    Wissa Haaland (McAtee)

Possibly Colwill for Pau depending on transfer.

    Thoughts?

I liken it to board games, where if you lose, as long as you know you played your hand as well as you could, then it is OK to lose. The other players had better cards. There is luck in the game.

Regarding hedging your bets, I don't seem to be able to have my auction league players in my fpl team. Then, if I'm in contention in auction league (for me, the most important), I get the good players my oppo has into my Fpl team and then hope I have a bad fpl week.
