Spain v Croatia team news: Yamal makes history

Group B of the European Championship gets underway with one of the toughest-to-call fixtures of Matchday 1.

Spain v Croatia kicks off at 17:00 BST in Berlin.

Lamine Yamal is in Spain’s XI as expected and, at 16 years and 338 days, makes history as the youngest-ever player to appear in a European Championship finals.

The main bit of injury news for the Spaniards is the benching of Aymeric Laporte, who was suffering with a muscular issue this week.

Nacho and Robin Le Normand are instead at centre-half.

Marc Cucurella is preferred to Alex Grimaldo at left back, meanwhile.

Fitness issues are, as is the case with Laporte, likely a contributing factor with Ivan Perisic only being a substitute for Croatia.

Josko Gvardiol, often a centre-back for his country, looks set to start at left-back.

              Not sure what you're trying to imply, Panda.
              I was at the Spain 1982 World Cup, Italia 90, USA 94, visited all the stadiums during Germany 2006; almost all first division grounds in England; before they invented the 'Premier League' and started calling football grounds '{Sponsor Name}' Stadium and plenty of European grounds when we had a 'European Cup' and UEFA Cup; even hitch-hiked to Split (when it was still Yugoslavia) to see Tottenham play.
              Also smuggled champagne (cheap Russian variety) up my coat sleeves into a Moscow stadium for a friendly and had my Tottenham shirt signed by the England team in Budapest; when it was still a semi communist country.
              Met Bobby Charlton, Bobby Robson and was even invited into Kevin Keegan's house for toast when he played in Hamburg and we were just teenagers hitch-hiking around Europe before such things as 'open borders' and 'bring back the EU so that young Brits can travel abroad.
              Have also seen a Vasco da Gama vs Flamengo at the Maracana and Boca Juniors at the River Plate in Buenos Aires.
              I'm a real football fan, not a fantasy one.
              Do I need to put all that in my 'profile'?

                  Last reply, as there's nothing in your profile to suggest anything about you, so you're little more than another empty statistic.
                  There was a newspaper called The European (by Robert Maxwell) in the 1990's (before most people knew anything about the Internet) and they ran a Fantasy Football competition in the paper.
                  I won it, with a nice cheque for 1,000 Swiss Francs.
                  No need to mention that really.
                  I find that I've been to over 120 countries and have had my photography and travel articles published in traditional media says more about me than a lucky win in a European Paper when no-one had the info that I had: real football fan knowledge versus the same stats that everyone has access to today.
                  But that's just me. And that's why my profile is about me; not about nothing.
