I think I'm down to this...

    A) Havertz plus two 4.5 defenders to go with Gvardiol

    B) 6m striker plus Gabriel and Munoz to go with Gvardiol

    Which sounds better?

I really think Havertz will do well this year, but my Arsenal fan status might be clouding my judgment.

Havertz is in my draft currently and I'm very worried about him, mainly because Jesus is back and Arteta is raving about him, Martinelli seems to be more in favour than he was and there's Trossard too. I don't think he's a nailed starter for 8m and if he is he could be a POO. He's been reclassified as a striker which probably goes against him too given Arsenal did keep a lot of clean sheets and are likely to again. I'd wager he won't outscore Odegaard this season at a similar price, different position obviously.

Jesus in pre-season has been twinkle toes again, playing for fun - probably still won’t score lots but he’s playing superbly

No, Havertz will do really well, just look at the second half of the season for his true potential.

Even if he gets the odd game in MF, it’s not like last year where the whole left side struggled to function (hence why Martinelli struggled) he’s confident now and the left side is firmed up, he actually got 2 assists from midfield during the week.

He’s a great pick but there’s a lot of great strikers in the game.

Mikel Merino could well be on his way to Arsenal, so I'm sterring clear of Havertz and friends until about GW3.

"Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Merino has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal, ahead of a deal being completed in the coming days.

Merino had been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid and Barcelona too, but it seems Arsenal have won the race and have got personal terms out of the way with just financial details to be agreed"

How does that affect Havertz? Merino plays deep, replacing the likes of Partey, allowing Rice to play higher up.

If anything that would push Havertz back up front, no..? More of a problem for Jesus as I can't see Havertz being benched. Think I'm sticking with Kai even if he does end up playing multiple roles initially

I think Merino improves our defence and ideally gives us more opportunities to win the ball back in midfield and start counters. He may well improve Havertz

    Flekken,

    Best option with the 0.5m?

    A) Save for Son -> Palmer in GW3
    B) Mykolenko -> Muniz
    C) Winks -> Rodgers

    Henderson
    Gabriel, Porro, Mykolenko
    Salah, Saka, Son, Eze
    Isak, Havertz, Muniz

    Fabs, Robinson, Barco, Winks
    Bank 0.5m

    Current plan is:

    GW2: Save
    GW3: Son -> Palmer
    GW4: Gabriel/Havertz -> 5.0/Watkins

I put Solanke in a draft.
    Gives me 8 attackers
Question then becomes is benching Bailey for 2 weeks ok if I have Bobb.
Cant see Bob starting after GW 2
Or just downgrade Bobb to Winks and save .5

    A. Play Bobb first 2 weeks
    B. Just keep .5 in the bank and play Bailey

    Draft question:
one of our players who joined the draft league can't make the date and time for the picking phase, they have decided to go on holiday, is there anyway they can pick an order of players they want, sort of like an auto pick? If they can't and they don't attend the pick phase, what happens?

My team is quite similar but I have Haaland and Wood instead of your Watkins and Havertz.

Saka to Smith Rowe enables it.

    Henderson

    Saka Gordon Nkunku ESR
    Haaland Isak D.Nunez

    Matthews Robinson Rogers Barco

Salah-less team but have Liverpool cover.

I know it is out of vogue - but hear me out...big @ the back - 2024/2025 is the year it could finally work?!

The theory behind going 5 at the back, is that defenders points per £ are often good value, in comparison to mids/forwards.

It usually gets a lot of hot air, prior to a new season and then promptly falls flat on its face.

So with a change to bonus points - which negatively affects defenders...who would try it in 2024/2025 season?

....Well...I might. The reasoning is the good mangers in the Premier League and their current preferred tactics, rather then the individual players themselves.

    1. Unai Emery often employs one defender (usually the LB) as pushed up, playing as a winger in attacks.

    2. Oliver Glasner lets Muñoz join attacks, pushing really high at times.

    3. Ange Postecoglou has the two full backs going into midfield, joining the attack as nearly attacking mids - either playing passes or even pushing into the box.

    4. Guardiola last season, was using Gvardiol as left-back which drifted into the centre to create an overload.

    5. Arne Slot looks like he uses one of the FBs inverted - likely Trent if he continues with that at Liverpool.

You could feasibly load up with 5 defenders from the above and play them every week, as they have potential attacking returns and clean sheets. This saves some £££'s, as you defenders are cheaper then attackers (generally speaking). You can use the extra cash in your fewer attacking players, to upgrade them.

The weakness is your bench - as midfielders/forwards don't have really budget options (under £5m), unlike the defender bracket - where there is plenty of scope for the £4.5 million players and even some £4m options!

I have built a squad, which can fit in the likes of Haaland, Salah, Trent, Gvardiol, Porro, Muñoz, Maatsen, Isak, Solanke. Bench has players that play, but would be fairly dour options alright.

    Just some food for thought!

    1. _Freddo
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 16 Years

Surely no one has a strong bench anymore (to counter this) the 5 sub rule pretty much killed the need for benches

    2. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years

Some potential for an attacking FB/WB renaissance there, yeah. I'm not sure that the inverting RB role (plus emphasis on a more controlled build-up) spells a boom in attacking returns for Trent though. But there's a few others too - Davis, Robinson, Aït Nouri, Barco/Estupiñan if in a WB system, maybe Livramento/Hall once we see a settled Newcastle defence

      1. @Bryan
        • 16 Years
        1 year, 7 months ago

Yeah I think Newcastle could offer a lot of value once settled, also Brighton and a few other teams.

The Liverpool tactics I can’t comment on too much, from what I have read and watched - the Full backs could get space on the ball, as Arne likes to create overloads on one side of the pitch with midfielders and attackers. If Trent gets time on the ball, I think he can do all kinds of things with his passing range. I don’t know if that converts to points of course.

I reckon good chance Liverpool and Aston Villa tighten up a bit this year. Arne more controlled and Villa have another year under a manager I really rate.

Spurs can do better, when they have all first choice defenders fit (last year, they dropped off a cliff once some injuries occurred).

Crystal Palace were improving as well, albeit transfers could go either way there for their chances of clean sheets.

What are the thoughts about Palmer. Is he likely to start week 1

I would say yes despite he is only back in training for a short time. Chelsea's performance against City in preseason was quite shocking. Maresca will play his best team from the start. However, it is a wait and see for me with Palmer as Chelsea do not look good under Maresca yet.

Thanks. May go for Nkunku instead and save £4.0m

    Neto to Chelsea
    Solanke to spurs
    Guehi to palace?
    Gordon to pool?

Will any of these moves change your fpl plans?
