Fantasy EFL Gameweek 39: Picks, tips, lineups + more 1

Let’s take a look back at the first leg, plus players who could be pivotal on the second occasion.

FANTASY EFL PLAY-OFFS GAMEWEEK 2: MATCH REVIEW

When winning 2-0, Walsall looked like a team totally transformed from their dismal end-of-season form and heartbreaking finish.

Taylor Allen (D) scored his 11th goal of the season from the penalty spot, returning eight points. The Saddlers doubled their lead before the break when Alfie Chang (M) scored a fantastic drilled shot into the bottom corner.

While Tommy Simkin (G) was forced into multiple saves, the hosts couldn’t find a way through, despite dominating possession.

What did the managers have to say?

“Walsall are in the ascendency without a shadow of a doubt, they’ve got a foot at Wembley. They’ve come here and done a good job – we huffed and puffed and couldn’t get back in the game. The Achilles heel of giving poor goals away at home strikes again. The game is still alive, so much to play for.” – Chesterfield manager Paul Cook

“Really good game. They’re a really good team with offensive players but we showed our threat at the right time. Resilient when we needed to be, defended as a team from front to back, as a team, very well worked goals, thoroughly deserved. We’re halfway through.” – Walsall manager Mat Sadler

Stats heading into the second leg

The Saddlers will be grateful to be in the lead, given their horrible recent record at home – four losses and two draws in their previous six. Whereas the Spireites ended as the most in-form League Two side, scraping into the play-offs with 28 points from 13.

Even facing a significant challenge in the West Midlands, Paul Cook’s team can draw confidence from recent form. Their attack has been potent, scoring three or more goals in a trio of their last five regular-season matches.

Furthermore, their away form is strong, winning four of the last six road trips. A stark contrast to their overall record of just three wins in their previous eight games, both home and away. Walsall, having drawn six of their recent 11, will likely aim to secure their progression on aggregate.

While the odds appear stacked against Chesterfield, the unpredictable nature of play-offs means a surprise result isn’t entirely out of the question.

Team news

Connor Barrett (D) has completed a three-match suspension and could slot in as Walsall’s right-wing-back instead of Nathan Asiimwe (D), who played well in the reverse fixture.

Jack Sparkes (D) and Armando Dobra (F) returned from injuries, featuring as Chesterfield subs. Given the scoreline, and a record of nine goals and four assists in 43, Dobra could come into the frontline.

WALSALL TOP PICKS

We all love out-of-position picks and Taylor Allen is pivotal in Sadler’s side. Despite the majority of the season being in defence, he’s still accumulated 20 goal contributions in 46, alongside 36 interceptions (+72).

Chesterfield will come out of the blocks firing, which should promote defensive actions. In turn, this could see Allen pick up interception points at a minimum. On set-pieces, he’s a great pick with 40% ownership.

Fantasy EFL play-offs GW1: Sunday VII 1

Elsewhere, David Okagbue (D) averages 5.8 points, backed by 12%. He has three double-digit hauls in his last four, consistently picking up points despite keeping just 13 shutouts in 45. He’s made 288 clearances, averaging six per game.

If you’re stuck for keepers, Tommy Simkin (G) was outstanding in the reverse leg. He’s now kept three shut-outs in his last four, making 72 saves in the overall 41. Backed by just 3.5%, save points should be coming.

CHESTERFIELD TOP PICKS

Averaging 6.4 points, Ashley Palmer (D) was a staple in their play-off push. He’s in excellent form, despite blanking last time. However, he did hit the bar on that occasion, and has four goal contributions in 16. Offering routes to points at both ends, we wouldn’t be shocked if he pops up with a goal at Walsall.

And if they are to progress, Will Grigg (F) is nailed for minutes, and has 12 goals and three assists in 31, starting just 21 of those. Prior to the play-offs, he had scored in three consecutive games.
