Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a three-transfer window ban by the EFL. This includes this summer’s window, the 2026 January and the following summer window too.
The sanction comes after the South Yorkshire outfit passed the 30-day mark for late payments to players and staff.
This marks the second instance in 2025 that owner Dejphon Chansiri has failed to make timely payments, following the delay of March wages into early April.
Despite off-field challenges, the team secured a respectable 12th-place finish in the Championship. They won 15 of their 46 matches and accumulated 188 Fantasy points, ranking them 11th in the division for Fantasy performance.
Shea Charles (M) was their standout player, topping the team’s fantasy scores with 237 points. A significant portion of his points came from his impressive eight assists and 58 interceptions.
This marks their third transfer embargo since the beginning of the 2023/24 season, highlighting a rapidly deteriorating situation off the field. Despite ongoing talks for a club sale, Chansiri hasn’t managed to finalise any deals, further compounding the financial woes.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl can now only sign free agents or no-fee loans until January 2027 as things stand. Although, his future at the club isn’t guaranteed either.
They’ve already released seven players, including Stuart Armstrong (M) and Mallik Wilks (F), alongside the three loanees, including Charles, who has returned to Southampton.
Should Chansiri fail to pay his players in June, they will then be free to leave Hillsborough as free agents.

As it stands, things currently look bleak. They’ll be fortunate to survive in the division.
Sheffield Wednesday are set to appeal the decision. More to follow.
