In a victory for both Arsenal fans and those who read transfer gossip each day, the long summer chase of Viktor Gyökeres is finally over.

The former Coventry centre-forward arrives for an initial €63.5m from Sporting CP, which can rise to €73.5m.

So, what impact will the 27-year-old have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll take a look during this Scout Report piece, including data and images from our Premium Members Area.

THE QUOTES

“Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.” – Mikel Arteta

“I always want to score,” he said. “To be a part of this club and to score in this kit and with this badge in front of all the supporters, I can’t wait. It will be an amazing feeling.” – Viktor Gyökeres

HISTORY

UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy: Scout Picks Matchday 6 2

A late bloomer in footballing terms, Gyökeres joined Brighton and Hove Albion in 2018 and quickly gathered loan experiences at St Pauli, Swansea City and Coventry City.

Neither of his 2020/21 Championship spells were full of goals. Yet the Sky Blues saw enough potential to then sign him permanently in the summer.

This is where Gyökeres found his groove and took his side to the verge of Premier League football. However, Coventry lost the 2022/23 playoff final to Luton Town.

Sold to Lisbon giants Sporting CP, his two seasons in the Portuguese top flight have been extraordinary. Back-to-back league titles, where he produced 68 goals and 16 assists in 66 matches. In all competitions, it’s a stunning 97 and 27 from merely 104 occasions.

It’s very rare for anyone anywhere to record more goals than appearances but Gyökeres did just that in 2024/25. His tally was better than all others in major European leagues.

Gyökeres also assisted seven times last season, meaning he produced an attacking return every 61 minutes. That’s a quicker rate than any Premier League player – even Mohamed Salah (£14.5m).

Of Hungarian descent, Gyökeres is currently on 15 goals from 26 Sweden caps.

PLAYING STYLE

A direct forward who likes to use his explosive pace and power to run behind defences on repeat, Gyökeres is also something of a shot monster.

After all, you don’t score 39 goals without letting fly on a regular basis. Last season, he accumulated 103 attempts. Only five players in the 38-game Premier League had more than these.

FPL new signings: Is Gyökeres the missing piece for Arsenal? 3

Furthermore, his impressive 70.9% shot accuracy compares favourably with the FPL’s top shot takers (highlighted in red, above).

WHERE GYOKERES FITS IN AT ARSENAL

Arsenal’s long search for a centre-forward has lasted the best part of two years. So now they’ve finally landed one, he’s expected to be a regular starter.

Even so, Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of Kai Havertz (£7.5m) and, nthe German has now recovered from a big hamstring injury. So what does that mean for Gyökeres?

FPL new signings: Is Gyökeres the missing piece for Arsenal?

Above: Positions played, according to Transfermarkt

He’s scored 167 of his 192 goals (87%) as a central striker, but also enjoys running the left channel. Perhaps the Swede will be deployed on the left of a 4-3-3, alternating positions with Havertz.

This would give opponents something else to worry about. If they double up on right-sided Bukayo Saka (£10.0m), a quick switch of play will expose them to the threat of Gyökeres.

He’s fast, direct and brings an element of chaos that has been missing from an often system-centric Arsenal front line that struggled against low blocks last season. Especially when injuries to Saka, Havertz and Gabriel Jesus (£6.5m) built up.

The addition of Martin Zubimendi (£5.5m) in midfield should allow the Gunners to play the ball forward more quickly and Gyökeres will be on the lookout for through balls from both the Spaniard and Martin Odegaard (£8.0m).

Also, their high press intends to produce quick turnovers. It should see Declan Rice (£6.5m) relying on Gyökeres to finish off his own ball-stealing work.

WILL GYOKERES BE WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Wherever he is deployed, this big signing has the ability to make a big FPL impact this season.

There are question marks over whether a prolific goalscorer in Portugal can translate that form to the Premier League’s higher standards. But even if his number of goals is cut in half, there’ll still be an amount that fans and FPL managers will be delighted to see.

The number of Arsenal incomings does make selecting players from Arteta’s rapidly expanding army a bit trickier. They also have an unenviable start to 2025/26, facing Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle in a perilous first six Gameweeks.

That’s why the early advice is to carefully observe Gyökeres’ pre-season progress and give him time to adapt. Gameweek 7, when Arsenal’s schedule appears to be nicer, could be an opportune time to turn to the big Swede.

Somewhere between Ekitike & Isak. I'd say closer to the former given the lack of PL form.

I don't see how he's more than Ekitike, who plays for the league champions and cost more money. He's not on pens, came from a weaker league, 8.5m.

Ekitike IMO will be first choice from the left, Isak up top, Salah right. Three man midfield of Wirtz Gravenberch and MacAllister. Sir Boz and Gakpo regularly coming on last 20-30 mins.

I know fixture swings might favor a WC in GW13 or so but I'm really tempted to do BB1, FH2, WC3. BB1 would be a 15-man Free Hit this way, followed by another FH. Then I would WC with the info I got in the first 3 GWs and be smart with my transfers. I feel like having the chips twice per season makes using them early and in combination very tempting.

    Anyone else thinking like this?

    1. JAC THE CAT
      • 12 Years
      10 months, 9 days ago

      I like your plan.

I like the BB in GW1 and then likely to WC straight after GW3. The FH is tempting but I might hold that back to use later in the season, maybe to combat when other managers are playing chips.

My only concern would be that WCs in GW3 and likely GW 30 (based on previous season strategies) are an awful long way apart.

I'm tinkering BB1 (with an eye on GW3 fixtures for my GW1 team) so I can FH2 (Arsenal assets etc) then I'll probably just use my FT in GW3 before WC4 as transfer window is closed by then and will have had three games of data to go with

I'm also questioning those two players.
Solanke hasn't done anything in preseason and no one can predict Pep's starting XI for GW1.
I'm thinking something like Wirtz+ Piroe is better than Cherki + Solanke

          Tananka Ampadu Stach
          Gudmundson Struijk Rodon Bogle
          Perri

Very defensively solid midfield that allows both fullbacks to get forward.

It's possible, but that would effectively demote Struijk to 4th choice CB which I think is highly unlikely when he captained us 20 times last season and scored some very important goals.

Historically, whenever we have made a big money signing they have always gone straight into the starting XI.
Last time we were promoted to Prem we signed Koch and Rodrigo who both played the opening game. We then went on to sign Raphinha in October who played the next available match.

I hope that's not the midfield for fixtures like Everton (H). Got to be a little more ambitious, surely? And Piroe needs someone closer to him. Would hope it's eventually more like:

            Longstaff Stach
            James Paixao Gnonto
            Piroe/Guiu

If anyone asks if you can fit Salah, Haaland and Palmer into a decent team, I'll show them this.

To show that, no, you sacrifice too much by including all 3.

VDV is overpriced and general is that Norgaard will be back up to Rice & Zubimendi.

How would you rank the attacking premiums in terms of how much points you think they'll score this season? for me it's

      1. Salah
      2. Palmer
      3. Saka
      4. Isak
      5. Bruno Fernandes

      Would you agree?

I have a feeling Salah will slightly perform under expectations this season. His contract is renewed, so he's not playing for a new one, and he has Wirtz and Etikeke who will be getting goal contributions.

For most of last season I generally had a full 15 players that were all getting minutes and I was happy to switch any of my subs into my starting 11 each week

This season I'm finding it quite hard not to have useless bench fodder when trying to stay in budget.

Not sure if I'm happy or not that we are back to how it used to be 😛

Rodon and A Ramsey will get minutes at least, so they're fodder but will at least pick up 2 points.

Seen a few people planning BB1, FH2, WC3 - I’m considering it myself - but potentially, there could be an issue with team value in GW2. People will sell the GW1 flops and jump on any bandwagons, so FH2 could be costly - remember that a .1 change, is effectively a .5 change at this stage of the season.

Going to hold onto my FH and WC. BB1 isn't a bad choice, but FH is good for a rainy day week (snow or something else major happening that causes games to get called off, like when the Queen died a few years back). WC is good if things haven't worked out at all, and good to play later if it did work out.

        1. The Bandit

Makes no difference. If one of the players you want to sell drops .1, you will only be able to spend .5 less and will have .4 sat in the bank that you can’t spend.

            • 10 Years

Only in this unique instance. The converse is that the .5M can be spent on players who rise in price by 0.1 using only 1FT.

BB1 FH2 could be a very effective strategy to get an early points lead.
Load up on Liverpool, City, Leeds, WHU and Spurs players for nice GW1 fixtures, then dodge their awkward GW2 fixtures. They go nice again for GW3.

Not sure what squad I'd go with for GW2 but we'd have more data to make informed decision at that point.

Will there be a way to find out how many teams have played their BB in GW1?

          Correct.

Likely to sign a Brazilian striker Igor Paixão from Feyenoord for about £26 million who is a class above Leeds existing strikers.

They are also in the market for a number 10 and possibly a left back.

They signed their new keeper officially yesterday from Olympic Lyonnais who will be first choice.

Paixao is not a striker. Plays LW or 10 (the latter is the bigger need at Leeds & I think he'd mainly play there). Watch out for Marc Guiu loan deal for Piroe's competition
