In a victory for both Arsenal fans and those who read transfer gossip each day, the long summer chase of Viktor Gyökeres is finally over.

The former Coventry centre-forward arrives for an initial €63.5m from Sporting CP, which can rise to €73.5m.

So, what impact will the 27-year-old have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll take a look during this Scout Report piece, including data and images from our Premium Members Area.

THE QUOTES

“Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.” – Mikel Arteta

“I always want to score,” he said. “To be a part of this club and to score in this kit and with this badge in front of all the supporters, I can’t wait. It will be an amazing feeling.” – Viktor Gyökeres

HISTORY

UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy: Scout Picks Matchday 6 2

A late bloomer in footballing terms, Gyökeres joined Brighton and Hove Albion in 2018 and quickly gathered loan experiences at St Pauli, Swansea City and Coventry City.

Neither of his 2020/21 Championship spells were full of goals. Yet the Sky Blues saw enough potential to then sign him permanently in the summer.

This is where Gyökeres found his groove and took his side to the verge of Premier League football. However, Coventry lost the 2022/23 playoff final to Luton Town.

Sold to Lisbon giants Sporting CP, his two seasons in the Portuguese top flight have been extraordinary. Back-to-back league titles, where he produced 68 goals and 16 assists in 66 matches. In all competitions, it’s a stunning 97 and 27 from merely 104 occasions.

It’s very rare for anyone anywhere to record more goals than appearances but Gyökeres did just that in 2024/25. His tally was better than all others in major European leagues.

Gyökeres also assisted seven times last season, meaning he produced an attacking return every 61 minutes. That’s a quicker rate than any Premier League player – even Mohamed Salah (£14.5m).

PLAYING STYLE

A direct forward who likes to use his explosive pace and power to run behind defences on repeat, Gyökeres is also something of a shot monster.

After all, you don’t score 39 goals without letting fly on a regular basis. Last season, he accumulated 103 attempts. Only five players in the 38-game Premier League had more than these.

FPL new signings: Is Gyökeres the missing piece for Arsenal? 3

Furthermore, his impressive 70.9% shot accuracy compares favourably with the FPL’s top shot takers (highlighted in red, above).

WHERE GYOKERES FITS IN AT ARSENAL

Arsenal’s long search for a centre-forward has lasted the best part of two years. So now they’ve finally landed one, he’s expected to be a regular starter.

Even so, Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of Kai Havertz (£7.5m) and, nthe German has now recovered from a big hamstring injury. So what does that mean for Gyökeres?

FPL new signings: Is Gyökeres the missing piece for Arsenal?

Above: Positions played, according to Transfermarkt

He’s scored 167 of his 192 goals (87%) as a central striker, but also enjoys running the left channel. Perhaps the Swede will be deployed on the left of a 4-3-3, alternating positions with Havertz.

This would give opponents something else to worry about. If they double up on right-sided Bukayo Saka (£10.0m), a quick switch of play will expose them to the threat of Gyökeres.

He’s fast, direct and brings an element of chaos that has been missing from an often system-centric Arsenal front line that struggled against low blocks last season. Especially when injuries to Saka, Havertz and Gabriel Jesus (£6.5m) built up.

The addition of Martin Zubimendi (£5.5m) in midfield should allow the Gunners to play the ball forward more quickly and Gyökeres will be on the lookout for through balls from both the Spaniard and Martin Odegaard (£8.0m).

Also, their high press intends to produce quick turnovers. It should see Declan Rice (£6.5m) relying on Gyökeres to finish off his own ball-stealing work.

WILL GYOKERES BE WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Wherever he is deployed, this big signing has the ability to make a big FPL impact this season.

There are question marks over whether a prolific goalscorer in Portugal can translate that form to the Premier League’s higher standards. But even if his number of goals is cut in half, there’ll still be an amount that fans and FPL managers will be delighted to see.

The number of Arsenal incomings does make selecting players from Arteta’s rapidly expanding army a bit trickier. They also have an unenviable start to 2025/26, facing Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle in a perilous first six Gameweeks.

That’s why the early advice is to carefully observe Gyökeres’ pre-season progress and give him time to adapt. Gameweek 7, when Arsenal’s schedule appears to be nicer, could be an opportune time to turn to the big Swede.

    RMT!

    Kelleher
    Konsa / Colwill / Wan-Bissaka
    Salah / Palmer / Kudus / Mbeumo
    Solanke / Pedro / Isak

    Bench: Dubravka, Ramsey, Esteve, Rodon

Potential rotation for Kudus and Pedro. Also, I’m not convinced that Kudus will be a good fantasy option regardless, I don’t think he’s consistent enough.

      Palmer, Gakpo, Rogers, Saka

It's alright, but why punt on Gakpo and Ekitike when you could just bank on Salah? Having Saka, Palmer and Isak unlikely to compensate for no Mo.

Early pre season but telling how much Salah was playing into Wirtz in Hong Kong. Mo doesn’t need to carry the team this year, if Isak does arrive that might go double. But if he does Etitike becomes a no no as does Gakpo as they’ll rotate.

Cheap defence is totally viable with the premiums having bad fixtures in the main and the new defensive contributions favouring worse teams

Going cheap at the back has worked really well for me the past few seasons and it’s definitely the way to go until first WC as hard to know which defenders/defences will do well whereas much easier to stack your attack with guaranteed goals especially with the top teams having bad fixtures, wouldn’t want VVD Gvardiol Gabriel yet anyway. I do like Milenkovic though!

not interested in them either but think 5.5 5 4.5 is a good structure to start with, some premium defenders might come in later
dont see many 4.5m defs with good fixtures or contributions to make up for

jsl the best 6.5m especially from gw5 onwards

Got a feeling Bruno Fernandes is gonna smash it this season, lots of ball recoveries amongst being involved in everything else.

One question I had, is does the defensive contribution points achievement affect BAPS?
I.e so in reality the extra 2 points for a defender is often 3 because of say an extra bonus point?

I'm on Bruno for now. Could also get even more assists with the changes to assist rules.

On the other hand, penalities count less for BPs, although the impact of the changes will be greater for forwards.

There's also a change to BPs for tackles, with tackles lost no longer counting against tackle BPs. There's no direct link between BPs and DC points, but that change could also benefit good defensive players.

                RMT 0,0 ITB
                Sels - (Darlow)
                AitNouri - Aina - Rodon - (Munoz) - (Konsa)
                Palmer - Saka - Kudus - Malen - Andreas
                Haland - Solanke - StandtLarsen

and yes I overcomplicate it and think ahead without making transfers in meantime
                GW2 bench: (Munoz v NFO) - (Kudus v MCI) - (Rodon v ARS)
                GW3 bench: (Andreas v CHE) - (Munoz v AVL) - (Rodon v NEW)
GW4 bench: (StandtLarsen vs NEW) - (Rodon vs FUL) - (Aina v ARS)
GW5 bench: (AitNouri vs ARS) - (Andreas vs CHE) - (Rodon vs WOL)

maybe I will transfer out Saka for Havertz, Solanke for Gyokeres/Ekitike, Kudus for LIV mid / raising MID...
but probably not until after GW3

Avoiding LIV and ARS def purely for not pleasant early run but will jump on after. AitNouri is a pure punt on rotation, but I like the man.

I think so, but the narrative going around is that Emery likes to give players time to bed in and that Malen will start more this season

I think he is probably the best attacking MID in villa and unless they want to score purely through Watkins I see him playing, as long as they do not buy someone in the meantime.

I will check transfer news just before GW1.

If Malen is Villas best attacking midfielder, then they're in trouble this season. I'm pretty sure it's Rogers.

I meant as in finishing / clinical / getting into the box.

Rogers is amazing but I still see him more as a playmaker or the "wonderboy" rather than shadow striker or such.

Watching FPL Zophar's latest Youtube post... some of the charts he shows really emphasise the appeal of Robinson, Collins and Nico Williams. All could make a mockery of their £5.0m price tags. Also, I now think only VVD is worth considering as a premium defender from the start.
My current defence is; VVD, Robinson, Collins, Williams, Rodon... with Chalobah on my watchlist as a potential bargain if a regular starter.

I was just taking a closer look at the defensive contributions of Elliot Anderson (£5.5m) game-by-game from last season.

He started 9 of his first 13 matches, of which he only averaged 68.7 mins per start. This impacted his DC totals, reaching the 12 DCs required for the extra 2 points in only 2 of those first 13 matches (15.4% hit rate).

Then GW15 happened (the 3-2 win at Old Trafford), which was a real turning point. From that match onwards, Anderson started all 24 of Forest's remaining games, averaging 82.9 mins per start. During this period, he reached the minimum of 12 DCs in 16 of those 24 matches (66.7% hit rate).

He could be a very useful option to keep the points ticking along, especially if Forest adopt a similar tactical approach to last season when they were content to let the opposition dominate possession most of the time.

Kudus for me is a bit meh. Good player, but streaky. I like Szob, but at some point you will want a LFC triple up that doesn't include him. I'm keen to have a look at Reijnders; from what I've heard he plays that Gundogan role alongside the holding mid, late runs into the box, that sort of thing, and having owned Gindog when he went goal-crazy a few years back, the reindeer is likely my punt-from-the-off this season. I don't see a time when I'll have a City triple up either.

Since Salah became Liverpool's starman on the right wing, the most goals a centre forward has ever scored is 15 goals. The average number scored by Liverpool's centre forward in the reign of Salah is around 10 goals per season.

Firmino's best season was 15 goals in 37 games (2017/18)
Nunez' best season was 11 goals in 36 games (22/23)
Jota managed 15 goals in 35 games (21/22) however half of these were from playing leftwing.
Gakpo's scored 8 goals in 35 games (23/24) again playing half on the leftwing.

The evidence does not support Isak having any chance of the golden boot, Salah's shadow is too large.

Counter-point: Salah is 33 years old Liverpool as a club is 133. I appreciate how brilliant Salah has been, but there comes a point where the club needs a new phase.

Moreover, Isak's stock is much higher than any of those aforementioned CFs. He's coming as one of the best in the world in his position. Firmino was a talent from Hoffenheim, etc.

Fair points both, but I have to agree with Mother Farke. I think Isak would thrive in that pool team and I’d genuinely be surprised if he didn’t get the golden boot. But then again, Haaland exists and he may scupper that.

Same front 3 now. I'd play De Cuyper over williams personally

Have Spurs suddenly become reliable? I know they have good fixtures but that doesn’t always bring the results we want. I am so leery of them. They finished in 17th place!
Appreciate hearing reasons to get them?

Spurs are garbage and no players should be considered.

Once the Gykores price is revealed I may bring him into my squad .
At the moment I've got Saka as my Arsenal asset plus planned gw2 captain .
I'm expecting & hoping for £8.5m which seems to be the lower end of predicted prices .
