Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5.0m) was the standout performer for Everton on Saturday, as David Moyes’ side were defeated 1-0 by Roma at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

In this Scout Notes article, we’ll cover the key notes and quotes from this clash.

The friendly involving Fulham is also summarised.

FPL pre-season: Gordon injury, Isak latest + De Cuyper goal 1

EVERTON 0-1 ROMA

DEWSBURY-HALL THREAT

Everton remain a work in progress but there were positives to take on Saturday, particularly from debutant Dewsbury-Hall.

Playing in a No 10 role, the £5.0m midfielder demonstrated his ability to drive forward with the ball and create, registering four key passes in just over an hour of football.

He was on set-pieces, too, another string to his bow.

“I thought Kiernan did well. I thought he gave us some quality and you could see the difference in his levels with some of the things he did, which were very good, so I’m really pleased with that part.” – David Moyes on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

With Carlos Alcaraz (£5.5m) and Iliman Ndiaye (£6.5m) deployed on the flanks, Everton were the better side for large periods and did create several opportunities.

Thierno Barry (£6.0m), however, squandered the most significant of those chances.

With neither Barry nor Beto (£5.5m) truly making a strong impression during pre-season, Moyes has a difficult choice of who to start up front against Leeds United in Gameweek 1.

As for Ndiaye, he missed a decent chance shortly after half-time and later forced a save from the Roma ‘keeper.

BRANTHWAITE RETURNS/MYKOLENKO INJURY

Jarrad Branthwaite (£5.5m) missed the Premier League Summer Series through injury but returned to the starting XI here, lining up alongside James Tarkowski (£5.5m) at the back.

The pair looked assured for the most part, with Tarkowski’s header from a Dewsbury-Hall corner shaving the woodwork.

Notably, both centre-backs would have hit the defensive contributions (DC) threshold in this match, with 11 and 14 respectively.

But Everton did lose Vitalii Mykolenko (£5.0m) to injury, as he walked off gingerly after only 10 minutes.

His replacement, Adam Aznou (£4.5m), showed some good touches but was caught out of position for the goal.

The extent of Mykolenko’s injury is yet to be determined.

“We’ll wait to see what the report says, we’ve not had chance yet.” – David Moyes on Vitalii Mykolenko

Everton XI: Pickford, O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite (Keane 79), Mykolenko (Aznou 11), Garner, Gueye (Iroegbunam 62), Alcaraz (Chermiti 80), Dewsbury-Hall (McNeil 61), Ndiaye, Barry (Beto 61)

FULHAM 1-0 EINTRACHT FRANKFURT

FPL notes: Raul's return to form, Rogers + Watkins superb

  • Goal: Jimenez

JIMENEZ GOAL/£4.5M KING STARTS

Raul Jimenez (£6.5m) scored a superb free-kick as Fulham triumphed 1-0 over Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the absence of Rodrigo Muniz (£5.5m), who apparently took part in a behind-closed-doors friendly between the two sides earlier in the day, the Mexican proved the difference maker, firing home from just under 30 yards.

Harry Wilson (£5.5m) was later denied when his low shot was smothered, while Josh King (£4.5m) performed well in the No 10 role and was slightly unfortunate not to win a penalty.

Influential in the middle of the park, King has now racked up 164 minutes of pre-season football as he aims to become a regular starter under Marco Silva.

ROBINSON + SESSEGNON INJURY LATEST

In his post-match presser, Silva confirmed Antonee Robinson (£5.0m) will not be ready to face Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 1, simply saying “Jedi is not ready”.

In a further blow, Ryan Sessegnon (£5.5m) was taken off after just 22 minutes against Frankfurt.

“He felt something. Let’s see in the next few hours or few days how he reacts. We’ll do some exams on him.” – Marco Silva on Ryan Sessegnon

Losing both players would be a major blow to Fulham, with Jorge Cuenca (£4.5m) or Timothy Castagne (£4.5m) likely to fill in at the Amex Stadium. That could be good news for Brighton right winger Yankuba Minteh (£6.0m).

Fulham XI: Leno, Tete, Andersen, Bassey, Sessegnon (Amissah 22), Berge, Lukic, Wilson, King (Cairney 73), Iwobi, Jimenez

      Tonali 9
      Wharton 5
Haven't seen Xhaka figure, but saw someone had calculated he scores an average of 10.5 over the past two seasons (probably doesn't mean much, in a different league)

Thanks Tony. Not quite up to the Andersen/Caceido standard then for Tonali and Wharton. Maybe best to wait and see on Xhaka, although not much risk at 5mil.

I expect so, but lie back and think of the assists from deep. He's got so many routes to points he'd have to be in goal to be a bad pick.

    Rate my team please:

    Dubravka

    Williams, Tarkowski, Diouf

Salah, Palmer, Dewsbury Hall, Xhaka, Baleba

    Haaland, Watkins

    Subs: Kinsky, Gudmunsson, Esteve, Guiu

    £1.5 million in the bank.

    Pros:
    - Managed to get Salah, Haaland, Tarkowski, Williams, Palmer and Watkins in my team
    - Other than Guiu, they are all likely to start
    - Fixtures aren't terrible for first couple of game weeks
    - With £1.5 million in the bank , and premiums in each position, I can jump on literally any bandwagon with 1 transfer if things go pear-shaped
    - Have players that should hopefully get some defensive contribution points such as Xhaka, Baleba and Tarkowski

    Cons:
    - No Bowen v a newly promoted team from the play offs (though admittedly he has a tough gameweek 2 fixture v Chelsea)
    - Is 3 £5 million midfielders too much?
    - Having to make sacrifices to get so many premiums into my team. I would imagine those considering the likes of
Dewsbury Hall, Xhaka, Baleba, Dubravka would have them for bench but not necessarily to start. Question is whether it is worth it to get Watkins, Haaland, Salah and Palmer all in the team??

    Thoughts please.

why would you keep 1.5m itb with a midfield like that?

Realistically, you are expecting 6 points out of 3 players in your midfield every week. You are going to have to hope that those premium players go double digits every week to make up for that.

Only my opinion but that feels unsustainable

Hi Manani - I don't like the look of any of the £5.5 - £6.5 midfielder category in comparison with what I have seen so far - for me they don't offer anything different. I also feel that if there is another £6 million forward or less, or a £6.5 (or less) midfielder gets off to a flyer, I can get them in with one transfer which might be tricky if I don't have that £1.5 million in the bank.

WHYFCSmith23 - it's a fair point. Thanks for your input. If it wasn't for the 56.8% ownership of Salah, he wouldn't be in my team and it would be more balanced. But I feel that not having Salah is a huge risk if everyone else has him and captains him with a dodgy Bournemouth defence. In terms of Man City, the only one I can be confident of attacking returns and regular starting is Haaland. Palmer looks like he is getting back into form and Watkins has been on fire in pre season. I like Fernandes but he has a tricky gameweek 1 fixture and I want to see how he blends in with the new signings. Liverpool have some tricky fixtures which puts me off Gakpo and Wirtz. Eze has a tricky gameweek 1 fixture. Semenyo has a tricky gameweek 1 fixture. I think Arsenal will do well this season but their first few fixtures apart from gameweek 2 are awful so it's a wait and see on Saka.

I did threemium in prior seasons, found it doesn't really work as you can only captain one and you'll be able to find a combo of 3x mids + 1 fwd that outscores Haaland (not captained) + Xhaka + KDH + Baleba IMO

I've ended up with both, and it doesn't concern me unduly. If only one, I'd start with the safer Anderson. It's an easy switch if Reijnders hits the ground running, but there is just the question mark with Rodri's fitness, and if it's Reijnders or Gonzalez that has to cover for him.

Have tried various drafts with Salah (no Haaland) and Haaland (no Salah) and not seen a knockout combo that makes me want to go with one over the other. Neither has had a great (or in Haaland's case pretty much any) pre-season and yet both could start with a bang if past form is any guide.

FOMO likely to sway me more than anything else right now and it's hard to ignore Salah's 57% ownership.

Starting to think premium midfield "rotation" may be the way to go if Salah starts flat, slotting Saka in for GW2, and

People may think the opposite to this, but I'm thinking with the likes of Gyokeres that possibly a 7.5ish forward can get near him

Whereas I'm not sure a Wirtz will get close to Saka/Palmer

    This is all roughly speaking

I think with the DCs that some defenders can also bridge the gap more to the 6.0s

Funny. I am on the same decision with the same lineup. I do like it.

I originally had Murillo, Rogers, and 7.5 forward.

Now leaning toward Neco, Bruno, and either Strand-Larson or Thiago.

I do like Murillo much more than Neco, but that 0.5 gets you so much elsewhere…

Grand. Wouldn't go Gakpo. Don't think he'll be as nailed on as Wirtz and both will impact each other's returns when they do play.
