Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5.0m) was the standout performer for Everton on Saturday, as David Moyes’ side were defeated 1-0 by Roma at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

In this Scout Notes article, we’ll cover the key notes and quotes from this clash.

The friendly involving Fulham is also summarised.

FPL pre-season: Gordon injury, Isak latest + De Cuyper goal 1

EVERTON 0-1 ROMA

DEWSBURY-HALL THREAT

Everton remain a work in progress but there were positives to take on Saturday, particularly from debutant Dewsbury-Hall.

Playing in a No 10 role, the £5.0m midfielder demonstrated his ability to drive forward with the ball and create, registering four key passes in just over an hour of football.

He was on set-pieces, too, another string to his bow.

“I thought Kiernan did well. I thought he gave us some quality and you could see the difference in his levels with some of the things he did, which were very good, so I’m really pleased with that part.” – David Moyes on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

With Carlos Alcaraz (£5.5m) and Iliman Ndiaye (£6.5m) deployed on the flanks, Everton were the better side for large periods and did create several opportunities.

Thierno Barry (£6.0m), however, squandered the most significant of those chances.

With neither Barry nor Beto (£5.5m) truly making a strong impression during pre-season, Moyes has a difficult choice of who to start up front against Leeds United in Gameweek 1.

As for Ndiaye, he missed a decent chance shortly after half-time and later forced a save from the Roma ‘keeper.

BRANTHWAITE RETURNS/MYKOLENKO INJURY

Jarrad Branthwaite (£5.5m) missed the Premier League Summer Series through injury but returned to the starting XI here, lining up alongside James Tarkowski (£5.5m) at the back.

The pair looked assured for the most part, with Tarkowski’s header from a Dewsbury-Hall corner shaving the woodwork.

Notably, both centre-backs would have hit the defensive contributions (DC) threshold in this match, with 11 and 14 respectively.

But Everton did lose Vitalii Mykolenko (£5.0m) to injury, as he walked off gingerly after only 10 minutes.

His replacement, Adam Aznou (£4.5m), showed some good touches but was caught out of position for the goal.

The extent of Mykolenko’s injury is yet to be determined.

“We’ll wait to see what the report says, we’ve not had chance yet.” – David Moyes on Vitalii Mykolenko

Everton XI: Pickford, O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite (Keane 79), Mykolenko (Aznou 11), Garner, Gueye (Iroegbunam 62), Alcaraz (Chermiti 80), Dewsbury-Hall (McNeil 61), Ndiaye, Barry (Beto 61)

FULHAM 1-0 EINTRACHT FRANKFURT

FPL notes: Raul's return to form, Rogers + Watkins superb

  • Goal: Jimenez

JIMENEZ GOAL/£4.5M KING STARTS

Raul Jimenez (£6.5m) scored a superb free-kick as Fulham triumphed 1-0 over Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the absence of Rodrigo Muniz (£5.5m), who apparently took part in a behind-closed-doors friendly between the two sides earlier in the day, the Mexican proved the difference maker, firing home from just under 30 yards.

Harry Wilson (£5.5m) was later denied when his low shot was smothered, while Josh King (£4.5m) performed well in the No 10 role and was slightly unfortunate not to win a penalty.

Influential in the middle of the park, King has now racked up 164 minutes of pre-season football as he aims to become a regular starter under Marco Silva.

ROBINSON + SESSEGNON INJURY LATEST

In his post-match presser, Silva confirmed Antonee Robinson (£5.0m) will not be ready to face Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 1, simply saying “Jedi is not ready”.

In a further blow, Ryan Sessegnon (£5.5m) was taken off after just 22 minutes against Frankfurt.

“He felt something. Let’s see in the next few hours or few days how he reacts. We’ll do some exams on him.” – Marco Silva on Ryan Sessegnon

Losing both players would be a major blow to Fulham, with Jorge Cuenca (£4.5m) or Timothy Castagne (£4.5m) likely to fill in at the Amex Stadium. That could be good news for Brighton right winger Yankuba Minteh (£6.0m).

Fulham XI: Leno, Tete, Andersen, Bassey, Sessegnon (Amissah 22), Berge, Lukic, Wilson, King (Cairney 73), Iwobi, Jimenez

Yeah, it was a pipe dream. Wanted to see him in the 1st team with Watkins for the final game, but alas.

Going to have to be boring and get Anderson I suppose. With Rodri out Rudolph will probably play deep, or he'll compete with Cherki for the 10. Probably best I don't go there...

I fancy Haaland or salah to start the season mainly for captaincy reasons. Cucurella might not keep as many clean sheets with colwill injured. Ait Nouri looks more attacking at the same price. Midfield looks good but I prefer palmer to Saka. Can’t fault the forwards. Good luck!

        1. Under my Cucurella
          • 10 Years

My previous drafts had Salah and Palmer and no Saka or Arsenal. I would be hoping that Reijnders, Wirtz and Pedro might cover the attack for the respective clubs. I haven't seen any of RAN in preseason, but have seen that Cucurella is getting forward a lot and looking creative. I will consider the switch to RAN though as you make a good point about the Chelsea defence. Captaincy is definitely going to be tough as well and will be a lot of luck needed

I could do Saka to Palmer with the spare funds but that would leave no coverage from Arsenal and I felt that Pedro might cover him at least at the start. If I go with this I will probably plan an early wildcard

Problem is I can't see a captain for you in GW1 - Palmer is a good Captain if you are going without Haaland and Salah. I think it's brave enough doing that but also no Palmer just leaves you too open to 3 highly owned potential captains ruining your season in just a couple of GWs

            1. Under my Cucurella
              • 10 Years

I would be taking a big risk with a differential captain. Probably Bowen. I see your point as the 3 names mentioned are clear captain choices. I'm not sure a season can be ruined in 2 GWs though, especially with extra transfers and chips this season and the option for an early WC if it goes wrong. I appreciate the feedback though, taking it on board and considering these points on whether or not I'll go through with it or bring one of the big hitters in

Looks good, I think Watkins is close to essential to start the season with Villa’s great fixtures so prefer him to gyok initially. Marmoush and pedro both minutes risk, I’d probably only have 1 of them to balance risk. Plus the obvious that you have no salah or haaland which makes captaincy more difficult.

I'd pick Watkins to start the season over either Ekitike or Gyokeres. I'd pick a different 6 mil defender over Frimpong (probably Ait-Nouri). I'd pick either Wood or Mateta over Pedro and Wirtz over Marmoush.

I will most likely start with Salah but this is interesting to me:

    A) M.Salah + Dewsbury-Hall
    B) Saka + B.Fernandes + 0.5

Obviously the appeal of Salah is captaincy but maybe it can be covered by Wirtz, Palmer, Saka and maybe Bruno.

I didn’t see any Captaincy appeal today. 1pt and a missed pen which would’ve put him on a minus score if it was in the 90.

I wouldn't put too much weight on a single game. Football varies wildly from game to game. Some games Wirtz will feel absolutely essential, but other games he'll be completely anonymous. That's FPL.

He's a quality player that is always looking to make runs into the box, playing in the best attack in the league. That's enough for me to stick with him for the medium term.

    Watkins Bowen Pedro

Not sure on Malen, could be Anderson or Sarr + 0.5m

Cheers. I think Anderson is boring, but he is safer for sure

I know it doesn’t mean much in isolation but it still doesn’t make for pretty reading.

    Salah in the community shield:

    Shots - 1
    Duels success rate - 0/6
    Dribble success rate - 0/1
    Pass accuracy - 65%
    Penalties scored - 0/1

Anyone thinking of an NFO defence double-up? Aina and Sels?

Yeah, I’ve been on it awhile but Sels and Williams until today’s rumours. May they find the .5 for Milenkovic

Williams better for defcons. Wouldn't mind a double-up with Sels
