Ollie Watkins (£9.0m) continued his fine pre-season form on Sunday, as Unai Emery took his Aston Villa squad to Marseille and Villarreal over the weekend.

Manchester City were also in friendly action against Palermo, as Pep Guardiola’s team won their only pre-season game of the summer.

The key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from these matches are discussed in the Scout Notes article below.

Our pre-season minutes tracker is already fully updated from these fixtures, as is our pre-season guide.

FPL pre-season: Gordon injury, Isak latest + De Cuyper goal 1

MARSEILLE 3-1 ASTON VILLA
VILLARREAL 0-2 ASTON VILLA

FPL Gameweek 33 round-up: Saturday’s goals, assists, bonus points + stats

  • Goals: McGinn | Watkins, Buendia
  • Assists: Ramsey | Buendia, Kamara

WATKINS READY

Ollie Watkins looks more than ready for the upcoming season, having pounced on a rebound to put Villa ahead in Spain on Sunday.

The forward has now netted in every pre-season friendly he has played this summer, with five goals in five matches.

This stands in sharp contrast to 2024, when Watkins was unable to participate in pre-season due to an issue he was managing from the Euros.

“Pre-season is crucial for yourself as a player. It sets the foundations for you going into the season. Last season I didn’t have that. I didn’t play in any pre-season games so I was trying to play catch-up. For me, it’s massive to play these games, feel good, get your confidence up and go into the season all guns blazing.” – Ollie Watkins

Emiliano Buendia (£5.5m) has certainly taken his chance to impress, too.

He was on the scoresheet against Villarreal, firing a shot into the bottom corner. He also claimed the assist for Watkins’ opener. It’d still be a huge surprise if he started against Newcastle United on Saturday, mind, even if Morgan Rogers (£7.0m) is ruled out through injury.

As for the Marseille takeaways, John McGinn (£5.5m) scored Villa’s only goal in a feisty 3-1 defeat, having been picked out by Jacob Ramsey (£5.5m). Ramsey was a constant threat down the left and was unfortunate not to register a second assist.

Elsewhere, new arrival Evann Guessand (£6.5m) was used from the bench in both friendly matches, playing around 45 minutes of football in total.

The Ivorian was deployed on the left in Spain, mostly adopting a narrow role that enabled Ian Maatsen (£4.5m) to overlap. He’s a versatile asset, however, with plenty of time spent on the right and through the middle at his previous club, Nice.

MALEN UNCERTAINTY

Emery mixed up his players across these two friendlies, with no indication of a ‘best XI’ in either game.

It’s not ideal for Donyell Malen (£5.5m), who has been one of Villa’s standout performers in pre-season.

In the latest friendlies, he’s been used up front, sharing minutes with Watkins rather than playing on the right, where a starting spot is much more likely to open up for him.

Does this mean Emery views Malen as cover for Watkins instead of a regular starter on the wing? Recent evidence certainly supports this notion.

Elsewhere, Marco Bizot (£4.5m) started in goal against Marseille, and with Emiliano Martinez (£5.0m) suspended, he should get the nod again against Newcastle.

On the fitness front, there was no Morgan Rogers across either match as expected. If we see him in training later this week, however, don’t bet against him starting on Saturday.

Aston Villa XI v Marseille: Bizot; Cash (Konsa 81), Bogarde, Mings, Digne (Moreno 81); Hemmings (Kamara 81), Onana; Iling Jr (Burrowes 81), McGinn (Tielemans 81), Ramsey (Buendia 68); Malen (Guessand 68)

Aston Villa XI v Villarreal: Martinez (Bizot 82); Rowe (Bogarde 82), Konsa, Pau, Maatsen (Moreno 82); Kamara (McGinn 71), Tielemans; Bailey (Hemmings 82), Buendia (Patterson 85), Jimoh-Aloba (Guessand 67); Watkins (Dobbin 82)

PALERMO 0-3 MANCHESTER CITY

3pm team news: Haaland + De Bruyne start, Marmoush a sub

  • Goals: Haaland, Reijnders x2
  • Assists: Lewis, Savinho, Mukasa

REIJNDERS SCORES TWICE

Has Tijjani Reijnders (£5.5m) just played his way into Pep Guardiola’s Gameweek 1 starting XI?

The Dutchman undoubtedly made an impression in Sicily, netting two second-half goals against Serie B outfit Palermo. Both strikes showcased his trademark late runs into the box.

He nearly grabbed a hat-trick, too, as he rounded the Palermo ‘keeper only to stumble at the crucial moment.

Still, with four shots in just 45 minutes of football, this was an impressive run-out.

“Yeah, we knew that he is a special player arriving into the box. He loves to do that. People in Italy know him perfectly. He scored two goals and he made a fantastic performance like the rest of his teammates. He can play as a holding midfielder but he loves to arrive to the box to help our strikers like Erling [Haaland] and Omar [Marmoush] and anyone who plays there. We are really pleased.” – Pep Guardiola on Tijjani Reijnders

Above: Tijjani Reijnders’ touch heatmap v Palermo on Saturday, via Sofascore

Erling Haaland (£14.0m) opened the scoring in Italy.

Pep Guardiola used a different XI in each half, with only the Norwegian featuring in both.

CHERKI BRIGHT

Another new arrival, Rayan Cherki (£6.5m), also caught the eye.

With Phil Foden (£8.0m) recovering from a knock back in Manchester (Josko Gvardiol (£6.0m) also wasn’t fit enough to travel), the Frenchman was deployed in a No 10 role behind Haaland.

He had a shot that was narrowly deflected wide and was arguably City’s best player, with so much of their play going through him.

Given that Omar Marmoush (£8.5m) wasn’t at his free-flowing best here, Cherki may be given an opportunity to start at Molineux on Saturday.

Rayan Ait-Nouri (£6.0m) also featured in Italy, leaving a positive impression on Guardiola; however, James Trafford (£5.0m) had a much tougher time with some sloppy moments in possession.

“The three signings we have done before the World Cup were really good. Cherki, Ait Nouri and Reijnders. We haven’t played many games. We’ve trained well but now we’ll go back to Manchester, try to make a good week and prepare the games. I am happy [with the squad] since the USA and our World Cup. Our vibes there were really good.” – Pep Guardiola

Elsewhere, with Rodri (£6.5m) set to miss the start of the season due to slow recovery from a groin issue, Nico Gonzalez (£6.0m) and Ilkay Gundogan (£6.5m) shared the No 6 role.

Manchester City first-half XI: Trafford; Lewis, Khusanov, Stones, Ait-Nouri; Gonzalez, O’Reilly; Bobb, Cherki, Marmoush; Haaland

Manchester City second-half XI: Ederson; Nunes, Dias, Ake, Akanji; Gundogan, Reijnders; Savinho, Bernardo, Doku; Haaland (Mukasa 70)

    Henderson. 4.0
Konsa De Cuyper. Aït-Nouri. Cucurella. Muñoz
    Rogers. Palmer. B.Fernandes. Wirtz. Reijnders
    Watkins. João Pedro. Mateta

Not a bad squad, who needs Salah and Haaland...right?

Meh fixtures to start, will probably be more popular when they turn, also probably even better when Šeško is fully integrated into the team.

Also, also even better if/when MU get Baleba

BBC article on FPL, advised by FPL experts - Pras, FPL Heisenberg, Gianni Buttice and Holly Shand...

(Brentford) Player to avoid: Nathan Collins (£5m) Collins is the highest owned but also the highest priced Brentford defender. He does well for defensive actions - two goals and seven assists last season - but £5m is too much to spend on a defender that won't keep many clean sheets and has only five league goals in his past four seasons.

(Brighton) Player to avoid: Georginio Rutter (£6m) Big things were expected from Rutter when he was signed for a club-record deal from Leeds a year ago. The Frenchman disappointed, however, delivering less than 100 FPL points and playing under 2,000 minutes, despite injuries to Joao Pedro and Welbeck at various points.

(Chelsea) Avoid: Joao Pedro (£7.5m) The Brazil striker is a great player but I see two problems. Firstly, he could and almost certainly will share minutes with Liam Delap. Secondly, he was on penalties at Brighton which was a big plus point, but this won't be the case at Chelsea because Palmer will take them.

(Man City) Player to avoid: Omar Marmoush (£8.5m) The Egyptian forward featured for the full 90 minutes in 13 matches last season, which is noteworthy for a player who joined in January. However, many of these appearances occurred during periods when Haaland was injured or Phil Foden was not regularly selected. With the addition of new signings such as Rayan Cherki, plus Foden's recent strong performances in the Club World Cup, Marmoush's playing time at the start of this season seems uncertain to me.

(Spurs) Avoid: Mohammed Kudus (£6.5m) Ghana midfielder Kudus is a very popular pick in the game, owned by 26% of FPL managers. However, it's unclear what his role will be in this Spurs attack. Solanke is the safer route to start the season, if fit. Remember that Kudus only produced nine goal involvements last season.

(West Ham) Player to avoid: Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m) Wan-Bissaka is overhyped currently. There are plenty you should avoid from West Ham (most of their assets in my opinion) but I wanted to highlight Wan-Bissaka because of his high ownership (30.9%). He wasn't great for defensive contribution points last season.

      Collins:
      - 7 assists last season
      - played every minute last season
      - Better goalkeeper behind this season
      - Captain
      - Plays Forest who aren’t scoring, then Sunderland in GW3.

      YES AVOID.

Rutter is in my team. Expected to start at CF . He is so versatile that he can play anywhere in the front 4. Any Brighton fan can shed some light?

Also you can't write off a player after one season. Poor writing by whosoever. I'd agree if that player wasn't nailed and was probably expensive/overpriced.

Could also add an avoid to some FPL experts too.

Avoiding Brentford is fair in general, the most likely of last years Prem teams to be relegated.

Rutter is probably nailed this year as either 9 or 10, definitely in consideration for me.

Pedro has been on fire and a lot of forward players get hooked around 60/70 anyway.

Any Citeh attackers aside from Haaland will be a gamble.

Kudus is probably the one out of all them to put in as will play and they have a great run.

Diouf and AWB are decent £4.5m picks. West Ham are basically playing a 3-1-4-2 when not in their third so you've got midfielders in those two. They've both been up and down all preseason, very fit, so potential DEFCON too. Potts at £4.5m is a great enabler and probably 4 points more often than not, he will start. Wilson wasn't even on the bench Saturday so Fullkrug at £6m is decent and Bowen will be a steady return.

There maybe an ulterior motive here as they're all highly owned, maybe they're worried about losing value as they have some of these players in their own teams.............

      1. MJF
        11 months, 9 days ago

Think they just want to come across as though they know more than the average player so they've chosen some highly owned players to back against. Guarantee at least one of those proves to be a solid pick, I personally feel AWB for 4.5 is a very nice pick if you set your expectations correctly. I mean what do you want at 4.5? Start every week and have a vague chance of a CS / assist is good enough for me.

Think I will go with a Haaland draft. Must haves imo Watkins, Palmer, Milenkovic or Sels, Ekitike or Wirtz, RAN. The rest are open depending on team news, can a £4.0 GK start etc.....

This is the best I can do without Haaland or Salah.

I really like it. But it depends basically on whether you trust the 4 big mids of Palmer, Saka, Fernandes and Wirtz for captaincy. I think this isn't bad:
Palmer (CPL), Saka (LEE), Fernandes (BUR), Wirtz (bur), Wirtz (EVE), Palmer (BHA)

Weeks 5, 6, 7 look kind of rough when Salah is the standout captain from Pool in 5/6 and then Haaland would be ideal in 7 vs BUR.

    Sanchez Dubravka
    VvD RAN Williams Dorgu Rodon
    Palmer Saka Fernandes Wirtz Cherki
    Watkins Pedro Guiu

Basically yes, but I want my C to be in form and trusting armband to four different players feels too risky for me. Can Wirtz be trusted if he blanks 3 times?

You were the one telling me early preseason last season that going with neither is a bad idea. Maybe it's my turn now. Salah really doesn't care about preseason, but has been strong when season starts. One blank so far imo. I don't trust Saka to be worth the price with those fixtures. Points will be split and he can still be facing two defenders, especially when White is not making runs.

Last season was a bit different. We had obvious value in Rogers at 5.0m.

This year it's less clear. But I do agree with you that Saka is probably not worth it with those fixtures. That would ultimately be why I think I'll go for one of Salah or Haaland to start.

I've messed around with drafts and with Haaland I can get to Ekitiké and Mateta to play 3-4-3 with a viable first sub.

I'd get to a draft without a 4.5m 8th attacker without Haaland or Salah in it.

I had a go at putting together a team without Salah and Haaland as well. I found it difficult to use up the budget whilst choosing players I really wanted for the opening fixtures. I went with Saka and Bruno as well, not because I really wanted them but because I could afford them.

Not that they are bad picks but had Arsenal and United’s fixtures been better early doors, it would have made it a far easier decision.

This seems to be the most difficult season to plan. Pool of players is huge, defcon points make it even more difficult and pricing hasn't been better as long as I have played. Even the models seem to have problems.

I've decided to play gung ho, as I don't have any patience and whatever I do normally, ie follow all the sage advice typically goes wrong anyway - so what do I have to lose

So I'm going high risk high reward with 3 x 6m attacking defenders

(No Salah) Wirtz and Eketiki, Bruno, Palmer, Reindeers, JP, Watkins

    Sanchez
    Diouf - VDV - Murillo
    Salah - Wirtz - Palmer - Reijnders
    JSL - Watkins - Pedro

Yeah true, I’d probably go for I.Sarr who has the points potential, but not for certain especially with the fixtures. If I downgraded De Cuyper to Esteve, do you reckon I should go for Evanilson or a 7m midfielder to replace JSL?
