Defensive contributions. DC. “DEFCON”.

FPL’s game-changing addition is the talk of pre-season. Perhaps there’s method in all the madness, or perhaps there’s simply no beating the old-school premium defender.

First, let’s run the numbers from last year.

HOW ‘DC’ POINTS AFFECTED THE OVERALL RANKINGS LAST SEASON

The below table comes from a great Fantasy Football Scout tool, available for Chief Scout members, which recalculates all the FPL 2024/25 points based on DC points, the bonus changes and any extra assists:

There is a very notable impact on the overall defensive rankings as a consequence of defensive contributions.

Josko Gvardiol (£6.0m), last year’s top-scoring defender, would have subsequently dropped to fourth in the rankings.

Meanwhile, the five best defenders for contributions all feature in the top 10 overall scorers.

It’s safe to say that defensive contributions present huge potential value across an entire season, but the real question is whether they still make for good picks across shorter periods. Do they still provide enough upside?

There are, of course, no guarantees that this year’s results will directly correlate to last year’s data. Teams can set up differently and there’s a wealth of new transfers alongside a couple of managerial changes. But it’s all we have to go off for now, and the results definitely indicate that certain players thrive more than others.

Two graphics stand out most crucially.

Pretty set on 9 starting players now (Sanchez, Milenkovic, N.Williams, VdV/Richards, Salah, Palmer, Wirtz, Reijnders, Watkins). To complete the last two slots in the 11, what would you go with?

    A) Bruno & Fullkrug (3-5-2)
    B) Bruno & Tarkowski (4-5-1)
    C) Gyokeres & Fullkrug (3-4-3)
    D) Gyokeres & Paqueta (3-5-2)
    E) Gyokeres & Tarkowski (4-4-2)

Depending on the choice above, will fill the rest of my team with the standard lowest priced assets in the leftover positions.

      Probably A, but it’s a tough one

Similarly to 2008 Antony - Probably A because of Bruno fixtures over Gyokeres, but not a fan of Fullkrug or Tarky.

Can you stretch Fullkrug to someone like J Pedro?

Also, I don't have the same confidence as you in Forest's defence to double up just yet. I would consider spreading the risk in changing out N Williams.

Very late to the party this year, only logged into FPL today, please feel free to rip apart my first draft :-

    Sels (Dubravka)
Ait Nouri Konsa Murillo (Esteve Moreno)
    Salah Palmer Kudus Reijnders (A.Ramsey)
    Watkins Gyokeres Pedro

Yes definitely a slight concern, and now Sesko has come in at £7.5m could be an option.

decent, defence a bit light, RAN could be hit or miss, maybe a more nailed defender like VVD or Cucerella would be safer

Very similar to my latest draft. I'm so unsure on the price point of midfielders between 6-8 mil, meaning I prefer the 4 premium mids.

I have Bruno instead of Saka, meaning I can upgrade 4.5 mid to Reijnders who I believe will be a steal at that price if he plays consistently for City.

As you have Saka in there, I'm assuming this is so you can captain GW2? If so, Gyokeres could be a good shout to save 1 mil. That's currently my thinking in place of Bruno

    A) Kudus & Fullkrug
    B) Sarr & Bowen

    1. Nolberto Solano

B is better, but also 2 million more. I don't think Bowen is worth that more than Fullkrug to start the season and I actually prefer Sarr to Kudus, even with fixtures more in Spurs favour. So I'd go with C) Sarr & Fullkrug +2mil

there is a lot of teams with two striker options Gyokeres could be sharing minutes with havertz but you'd like to think the manager would want to give their main striker the chance to score and get confidence high! season is long Delap will get cup games for sure I would imagine

I think pedro for opening fixtures. Sesko has just arrived so I’d be amazed if he started on Sunday, but could be a good pick after early tricky games. Forest haven’t been scoring loads in pre season so I’d go pedro over wood

Fpl draft question - when sesko is added is it a case of whoever logs on first before game week 1 can draft him ? Also wondering if anyone knows when he may likely be added so I can be sneaky and get there first 🙂

I think it's whoever's last in the league gets first pick. It should be whoever was last in the snake though.

Sesko was just added this minute which is strange timing. I tried to sign but it’s been added to proposed transfers so I’m guessing after gameweek 1 whoever is bottom of draft will snap him up right. Nothing will be processed before game week 1???

I think you'll need to get the lowest weekly score in GW1 to be able to get Sesko in the trades afterward

Lost on last. Anything here you'd change for a BB, likely early WC team?

    Sels | Verbruggen

    Salah | Rice | Reijnders | KDH | PMS
    Haaland | Watkins | JP

I was initially hot on Rice as well, but in the last friendly, he played deeper, yo-yoing with Zubimendi, who looks like the potential pick of the two on value.

I'll also C&P what I replied to Bloggy at the bottom of the last page:

It doesn't seem sensible to spend over 4.5 on a second playing GK. Better to have 0.5 ITB or in your outfielders imo. If not BBing, you could consider rotating 4.5s or going with 1 GKs of any price along with 4.0 fodder as a makeweight. I don't want to be the orthodoxy police, but I do want to be honest about my first reaction to your team! You will have 0.5-1.0 extra on the bench each week compared to others, simply because you want the BB in GW1 (and maybe a little bit of benefit from rotating, but certainly also a lot of frustration when you bench the wrong one!). WCing early does mitigate the issue somewhat, but if you do extend, you're haemorrhaging value.

      1. Drop Dead Tsimikas
        • 14 Years
        11 months, 7 days ago

But that's the point - I would be BBing and WCing early.

I take your point on Rice. Were it not for United and Leeds as the first two GW opponents, I probably wouldn't be keen on him, either.

Okay fair enough. The sooner, the better, then!

I really think Zubi is worth your consideration. He likes to get involved in the box when permitted by circumstance! And I think you could use the money. At the moment, I am on an Arsenal triple attack, with early WC, so I'm fancying the opening 2 fixtures too.

I'm going back and forth on going Watkins > Gyokeres for GW2 or just getting Gyok and concentrating on improving elsewhere. These three GWs with no clear favorite are really doing my head in.

            1. Deulofail
              • 10 Years
              11 months, 7 days ago

Gyokores is a big risk imo. Havertz is loved by fans and manager. But I'm taking the risk and hoping for the best. GW3 will be a FH, so I don't need to worry about Arsenal (or Liverpool's) fixture

Interesting idea about FHing in GW3. Why so early?

I hate the idea of planning chips later on, while there are no clear choices on how exactly to optimise without using tools. So, best for me to just get it out the way. Currently tripling-up on Arsenal and Liverpool, who play each other in GW3. Gives me some differentials, since Arsenal are less popular than they would be with better fixtures. I like to focus on the 'bigger teams' in the opening GWs anyway, and move to emerging magic beans as they sprout later on.

I'm not set on the idea, but it's the current plan, and I doubt I'll be bothered to change it.

Also, when you use a chip, you save a transfer, so you can be up to 5FTs theoretically already by GW 7 after a WC and FH, with only 3 weeks of saving your transfers. I figured last season that an early WC made sense with the introduction of 5FTs, and now there's another chip to be used to get you to 5FTs even more easily.

GW6, even, not GW7. If I'm not being a dunce

GW8, actually, since I was wrong about saving transfers when playing FH or WC. It's just a good way to delay the WC an extra week, then, while optimising for GW1 & 2.

I think you need more nailed players if that's the plan. Since your effectively on wildcard now you need 15 nailed-nailed starters
      Way too many doubts:
      Verbuggen - injured
Frimpong - any game could swap with Bradley
VDV - any game could be rested, but especially after PSG
Toisin - expected to start, but we don't know
Pedro is honestly 50-50 in my books any given game
Sorry to be so negative 🙁

Wait, when did Verbruggen manage to get injured?

Frimpong can become VVD - can be a gametime decision.
VdV is a good point - the PSG match will be a good opportunity to gauge Spurs players as a whole, with that quick turnaround
Tosin I'm willing to gamble on, given they don't really have a good alternative (Fofana?) but have good fixtures
JP I'm not super worried about

this is a stretch, VDV one of spurs best players when fit. If he gets injured we will know

The purpose of this post is to question whether Spurs/Frank will manage VDV game time given his history of injuries.

      It is a short turnaround.

Yes, Forest are looking to buy a new LB. It may depend if Williams is a short or long term pick on your team

Forest looking to buy a new left back, making Williams a slight rotation risk, especially now that it's confirmed they'll play in the Europa League.

Palace's appeal has been rejected, they will play in the Conference League and Forest in Europa League.

No, Forest will play in the Europa League
It was confirmed today that Palace's appeal had failed, so Palace play in the Conference League.

I haven't worked out the £ but make sure you can get a good 4.5 DEF sub. Downgrade one of the others if needed.

      Then it's great.

So many new players at the big clubs this year, hard to see a clear template.

Could change towards Friday, or could be a very interesting season start.

Alright last one for the day I promise...

    A: Anderson + Richards + 0.5M Spare
    B: KDH + Munoz

Also worth noting I reckon KDH would go on my bench for probably 3 out of the first 5 GWs....

When comparing total points of last season with hypothetical DC points, it seems best defenders are superior to similarly priced midfielders. I'm wondering why there aren't more "bottom heavy" RMT's around. I'd like if you'd pick holes in this logic. A demonstrative team (my current draft):

    Kelleher
    VVD Murillo Milenkovic Munoz AWB
    Salah Palmer Fernandes
    Watkins Wood

    Dubravka KDH Guiu Potts

I think it stems from unknown season defensive teams yet to stand out. Once a pattern has formed the defensive assets will be snapped up with the first set of wildcards no doubt

Similar to when big at the back was fashionable a few years ago. In theory it's good, but in practice the CS and def attacking returns are difficult to predict. If no CS, you're stuck. Needs a balance IMO

Really struggling with a 6.5 mid here. Maybe Kudus or Mitoma?

    Sels
    VVD Munoz VDV (JAnderson Esteve)
    Salah Palmer Wirtz EAnderson ???
    Watkins JPM (4.5)
