Manchester United rounded off their summer campaign on Saturday, as Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) claimed his fifth attacking return of pre-season.

Nottingham Forest were also in friendly action.

We discuss any notable Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from these matches below.

Fantasy EFL: Which sides should we target in Double Gameweek 3? 1

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-1 FIORENTINA

FPL new signings: Does Mbeumo have less appeal at Man Utd? 4

  • Assist: Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes provided the assist for United’s only goal on Saturday, as his corner caused Robin Gosens to divert the ball into his own net.

Deployed in a deeper role, Bruno and Casemiro (£5.5m) weren’t able to control this match for the hosts; however, it is important to highlight that Fernandes racked up 12 defensive contributions, which included nine recoveries.

Above: Bruno Fernandes’ touch heatmap v Fiorentina on Saturday, via Sofascore

Benjamin Sesko (£7.5m), meanwhile, was presented to supporters on the pitch at Old Trafford, having sealed his move from RB Leipzig earlier in the day.

Two of United’s other summer additions, namely Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) and Matheus Cunha (£8.0m), did feature.

Neither player looks fully fit, but Mbeumo carried a threat with some wicked deliveries into the box and spent the second half up front.

He also created four chances for his teammates.

As for Cunha, he played off the left and almost netted the winner when he got on the end of Fernandes’ cross, but his effort was deflected over.

“I think they [Cunha and Mbeumo] are maybe 50/60 per cent of what they can do. I think, like any other team, we are going to improve during the season, they are going to be so much better. In some moments I felt that we, because of the one-v-one in all the pitch, we struggle without a reference as a striker. We have a new player [Sesko] so we’ll see.” – Ruben Amorim

With only Andre Onana (£5.0m) and Joshua Zirkzee (£6.0m) absent for United – they trained on Monday – the starting XI hinted at Ruben Amorim’s line-up plans for the opener against Arsenal.

Manchester United XI: Bayindir; Yoro, Maguire (de Ligt 73), Heaven (Shaw 73); Amad, Casemiro (Mainoo 73), Fernandes, Dorgu; Mbeumo (Dalot 73), Cunha; Mount (Ugarte 84)

NOTTINGHAM FOREST 0-0 AL-QADSIAH

FPL Gameweek 29 round-up: Saturday’s goals, assists, bonus points + stats

Nottingham Forest concluded their pre-season preparations with another lacklustre result, as they recorded their fifth goalless draw of the summer.

It means Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have scored just one goal in seven pre-season friendlies.

Against Al-Qadsiah, summer signing Igor Jesus (£6.0m) partnered Chris Wood (£7.5m) up front and headed a couple of efforts wide.

Substitutes Jota Silva (£4.5m) and Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.5m) were later denied, but Forest once again failed to find the breakthrough.

On a positive note, Morgan Gibbs-White (£7.5m) should provide some creativity in the No 10 role. He missed out here due to a family matter.

Five clean sheets in pre-season does at least offer some optimism ahead of Sunday’s opener against Brentford.

“We have kept a solidity at the back and within the team. Everyone is defending well… that is a positive. Of course, we would like to score a lot more goals but it is pre-season. The real business starts next week. That is when we must find the back of the net.” – Ola Aina

Neco Williams (£5.0m), meanwhile, linked well with Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m) down Forest’s left flank and created a couple of chances for Jesus.

Nottingham Forest XI: Sels; Aina (Cunha 61), Murillo (Awoniyi 77), Milenkovic (Boly 61), Williams (Morato 77); Ndoye (Richards 77), Anderson (Sangare 61), Yates, Hudson-Odoi (Moreira 77); Wood (Stamenic 77), Jesus (Jota 61)

Bruno could be the man this season

          So many routes to points

He's still advanced when Man Utd have a corner, penalty and he occupies the left hand edge of the box

If they are drawing he'll be pushed forwards to on 70 mins

After yesterday‘s display, I definitely feel no Salah is the right way to go. Realize it’s just the community shield and etc., etc., but his body language and his facial expressions were not inspiring confidence in any way shape or form, in addition to his lack involvement in anything really that was happening. Definitely going to avoid at least for the early days.

    Murillo-Tarkowski-De Cuyper (Dorgu Esteve)
    Salah-Palmer-Wirtz-Gakpo-Reijnders
    Watkins-Joao Pedro (Guiu)

Too light in defense, or can this fly? With Rogers uncertain, I'd much rather find a way to Gakpo instead of any 6.5m player - if Rogers then I'd upgrade Kelleher to Sels

Hi folks.. getting close to D day. How are people seeing things formation wise? I see DEFCONS are affecting things as people are putting their money into defence eg 6, 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 for example. Probably to go with a 5.5/5.0 Defcon mid.
Forwards won’t do so well on the BP system with regard to pens this year.
I just wonder about the selection of forwards this year. Should we load up on the three positions? There’s an abundance of strikers this year between the 7-9m range. Goals and assist are still good…right?

        Yeah

Not many going 3-4-3 so that provides an edge

Especially if the 4.5m loses value it will be harder to upgrade the 8th attacker

Having three up top with 9m 9m 7.5m price points could make things easier to move around between strikers for their better run of fixtures. Watkins ekitike gykores Bowen Mateta J Pedro wood Solanke sesko. Include the robot and Isak when he’s back that’s a decent pool to chose from. I’m of the belief we will all want three of these very soon. Strikers are strikers again. False 9s are becoming less fashionable again.

Still on 3-4-3. Let's not be revisionist; not many of us were that excited by Chris Wood or Wissa this time last year (though few pointed out Wood's record since Nuno)

DCs have come in to supplement a distinct lack of CSs, which aside from Arsenal for a period and Pool at the start of last season, has very much been on the wane since the stoppage increase rule change of 22-23

There's seemingly been a tweak to the bonus re pens for forwards, but they still benefit rather than hog it like a Wood pen special 9 points last season

Cunha, Wissa, JSL, Welbeck all were excellent last season and not one penalty between them (will double check)

        1. Ser Davos
          • 10 Years

midfielders outside of Salah - Palmer - Saka - Mbeumo were distinctly underwhelming and frustrating for the most part too

people fixate on the extra point and CS point, but I think that's superseded now by the bonus forwards get. Bowen is an example of this in that he's actually only lost 5 points with re-classification. A loss for sure, but reflected in his price. As mid he's 9 I think

Agree on the Bowen for sure. Rogers was of course the gem last season and this season will surely provide another value short priced mid. Whether it’s a defcon, attacking or even a hybrid I’m sure one will emerge.
If I have ekitike Watkins and j Pedro and one becomes an issue. It easy to move down to the fashionable 7.5/8. I think keeping money in the forwards to begin with might be a smarter play. But we will see

I've of a similar mind. I get tempted to veer away from the structure of 3-4-3, as a Minteh etc. is more tempting at this point than, say, a Beto, but once we have more info these no.9s will emerge I think, even if it is just one or two

we were picking the likes of DCL, Vardy, Delap last season as well. Not many pens there, but they were hoovering the bonus

I agree with all the above. I’m just feeling that we have a bit more quality to pick from. Instead of Nunez havertz hojlund Jackson
We have ekitike gyokeres sesko j Pedro. It just feels like more quality to pick from. These guys aren’t proven ( JP excl) in the prem but that also means they could ultimately be undervalued also.

I agree with this too. I've been somewhat fixated on the structure of a cheap striker or two, but there's lods of firepower from 7.5-9 and then Isak

Is Darlow likely to start this week? Or any 4.0 GK?

Is Saka no longer on pens for Arsenal?

No one knows for sure, but Gyökeres will likely be on pens now

My guess is that there'll be shared around. If they get a pen pre-65ish and Gyokeres is on the pitch, I think he says, "here you go, given your record, get off the mark"

If Havertz is playing in the latter stages I think its Saka

        After that, Odegaard

and Saka has a propensity for winning the pens too

Spurs fans: can we rely on Spence for GW1 only?

Depends on Udogie's injury. He's been included in the Super Cup squad, doesn't necessarily mean he's fit.

      Haaland + 4.5 or Gyokeres + Watkins?

          Haaland PPG = 5.8
          4.5 PPG = Won't play
          Total over 6 weeks = 35 points

          Havertz PPG = 4.2
          Watkins PPG = 4.9
          Total over 6 weeks = 55 points

Surprised it's this close tbh 😀

Probably isn't this close since it's Gyökeres and not Havertz, mate

Got to base it off something. Gyokores isn't nailed, but Havertz is effectively nailed when looking at his PPG...kinda.

Only 2 of his appearances were cameos. The rest starts.

But the 4.5 attacker is benched for an extra midfielder or defender.

Watkins should outscore Haaland in the first 5 GW.

Gyökeres is meh, better use of funds than him. Wouldn’t consider until GW7.

I think he'll start strong tbf

There's quite a few forward options this season

Few A or B (and a C) here if you wouldn’t mind giving your opinions:

      1) Dorgu or Richards (required in GW4)
      2) Reijnders or Andersen or Dewsbury-Hall
      3) Wirtz or Bruno

      ****** Jimenez Guiu

      Best option

      A Watkins and Kudus/Cherki
      B Wirtz/Marmoush and Evanilson

        What’s the thought behind Saka?

Could be Watkins and Wirtz if you drop him! Saka looks like a potential asset from GW7.

          GW2 captain.
United will still be a mess until after 1st or maybe 2nd international break
