With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just days away, we’re getting team reveals from our team of pundits and Hall of Famers.

Here, three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser shares two drafts that he’s narrowed down to – one with Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) and one without.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

Lateriser triple Forest

We’re getting closer and closer to the end game and I find myself narrowing down my decisions – or I hope so, anyway.

On Sunday, I was debating two Gameweek 1 drafts: one which involved Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) and the other which didn’t.

BRUNO DRAFT

The one that involves Fernandes looks like this:

Bruno Gameweek 1

I was objectively thinking very, very hard about Bruno on the weekend.

PROS

  • He’s an absolute minutes machine, a 90-minute man who does a lot of good work in the final 20 minutes.
  • He’s on penalties and I expect us to win a lot more spot-kicks this season due to the runs of Amad Diallo (£6.5m), Matheus Cunha (£8.0m), Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) and Patrick Dorgu (£4.5m).
  • Even if he plays deeper, he’s pretty decisive in many moments because he’s Bruno Fernandes. He’s built for output.
  • We are a lot better at set pieces compared to six months ago and he takes them from one side. Mbeumo takes them from the other side
  • The presence of Benjamin Sesko (£7.5m) means Fernandes might get a few more assists as he places himself in the half space on the right side a lot for a whipping cross inside the box.
  • He’s got high defensive contribution (DC/DEFCON) potential for an attacker, registering DC points in 33% of his outings last season. This gives him a very high floor with minutes, penalties, set pieces, DEFCON and open-play potential.
  • He’s playing with better players this season. Better utilisers of the ball and better finishers, which means that he should get more assists. There might be some more cut-backs from the likes of Cunha and Mbeumo, instead of the likes of Alejandro Garnacho (£6.5m), who just cuts in and shoots.

All in all, he’s a really good asset with a high floor.

CONS

  • He’s pretty expensive. That £9.0m price tag is a slightly odd one for someone who plays relatively deeper compared to others in that price bracket.
  • The fixtures at the start of the season are pretty difficult for United with Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea in the first five games. Even Fulham are pretty good defensively. How many goals will the Red Devils score in these games? The ceiling doesn’t seem that high.
  • Given the above two points, it does feel like you can take him on, given you’re only likely to captain him in Gameweek 3 against Burnley.
  • The goals might be spread around a little bit this year with Sesko, Mbeumo and Cunha added to share the load.

Now, with the draft above, I realised that my defence felt really light. I could go for a bigger downgrade and opt to lose Ollie Watkins (£9.0m) instead but he’s had a fabulous pre-season and Aston Villa have good fixtures at the start of the campaign. Below is very encouraging as well:

“Pre-season is crucial for yourself as a player. It sets the foundations for you going into the season. Last season I didn’t have that. I didn’t play in any pre-season games so I was trying to play catch-up. For me, it’s massive to play these games, feel good, get your confidence up and go into the season all guns blazing.” – Ollie Watkins

So I played around with downgrading Bruno Fernandes to one of Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m)/Georgino Rutter (£6.0m)/Morgan Rogers (£7.0m) and this is what I built.

DRAFT WITHOUT BRUNO

Before I finish, let me point you in the direction of a recent video we have done with Josh Williams, who does excellent work for The Anfield Wrap and LFC TV (and is one of the best when it comes to Liverpool). He discusses the nuances of the Reds, which you can view below:

Toss a coin! You’d want to watch and wait on both in all honesty. But if you want to pick one, Gyokeres. Still don’t trust United.

No reason for Villa to sell to a rival (with no other striker option) or Watkins to go there.

Ok - so is it just me, or has the FPL website just got much less user friendly than it ever used to be?
Processing transactions of all kinds just seem so much messy than before & I envisage making quick reactions to news (especially close to fpl deadlines) to be much more of a challenge.
Why must they tweak things so much every season!? so annoying.

Many many years ago you used to be able to hit one button on a photocopier to get your copy, nowadays it’s 5-10 buttons to achieve the same result. I queried this with some techies 15-odd years ago and was told it was because of ‘increased functionality’! Maybe that’s the answer.

    Morning gents,

    Any feedback or recommendations on below draft would be appreciated;

    Sanchez Dubravka
N.Williams Konsa AWB De Cuyper Esteve
    Salah Wirtz Palmer Rogers Mitoma
    Watkins Bowen Guiu

Really pleased with the overall feel, but can't stop tinkering Mitoma / Sanchez and trying to squeeze in a 6m defender..

    Thanks!

Really like that. I’ve had AWB in all my drafts until last night, when I finally changed him to Diouf. If you did want a 6m defender, you could do Mitoma > Tielemans and Sanchez to a 4.5.

      1. LC1
        • 11 Years

        Ta pal.

In all honesty I'm considering AWB to Diouf but will be a last min jobby if so.

Good suggestions pal and I think the way to get a 6m defender in is by doing what you suggested and downgrading Mitoma, but not too keen on Tielemans as would leave me with triple Villa attack.

        Tempted with;
        Mitoma > Anderson
        Williams > Virgil
        Sanchez > Sels

    Love this @lateriser.

I’ve been mulling a lot of these decisions myself.

    Here’s where I landed

    Sanchez,
    Murillo Tarkowski Lacroix
    Salah Palmer Rutter Reijnders Wirtz
    Bowen Pedro

    Dubravka. AWB, VDV, Guiu

So really the difference is Lacroix / Munoz and Bowen / Roger’s, plus more value on the bench.

My big question now is downgrade the bench to enable Watkins or not?

          Verbruggen
          Cucurella - Murillo - Tarkowski
          Salah - Palmer - Wirtz - Ndiaye - Malen
          Gyokores - Pedro

          Dubravka - Esteve - Reinildo - KroupiJr

          .
Malen might be Anderson or Reindeer. Haven't decided yet. Unsure on Pedro long term, but I want a 7.5m forward to stay flexible to Sesko, Mateta, Wissa, all of whom could be key. Also want a 6.5m mid to be flexible to potential stars like Sarr, Estevao, Cherki, Amad, so Ndiaye looks solid given the fixtures and Grealish could win him a few pens.

We're not deluded. Dorgu is a punt but very attacking and if we're improved by at least some margin this season could turn out to be a decent pick if you don't have to play him every week.

You know I'm a pessimist, but Dorgu ticks all the FPL boxes tbh - nailed, cheap, plays like a winger, good ensemble cast,

Would be getting a lot more attention on here if the ref hadn't blown for a non-existent foul after he went 1v1 at the weekend.

Which combo is more nailed for GW1 only?

    A) Perri and Konsa

    B) Bizot and Gudmundson

Martinez is suspended GW1 by the way haha

    Sels
    VDV Cucurella Ait-Nouri (AWB, 4.0)
    Saka Palmer Wirtz Bruno Rogers
    Watkins J.Pedro (4.5)

    Cucurella swap? Rogers swap?

I'm happy with the rest, so give me some opinion? Gabriel Gyokeres?

Cucu & Munoz are nailed on for me, the pre season eye test alone.

      Has Roger’s ankle injury fixed?

      Watkins to start with

Just watch Rogers injury. Watkins over Gyok to start imo

Think i'm loving this draft, nice to get your thoughts

Few risks here with RAN but bench covers him if he doesn't play, Rice will start every game and on free kicks and corners, Guiu will rotate with Arias who i'm sure will make a huge impact

    Sels
    Frimpong / Ait-Nouri / De Cuyper
    Wirtz / Palmer / Rice / Sarr
    Guiu / Haaland (c) / Gyokeres

    Dubravka / Arias / Munoz / Reinaldo

I think Rice is decent pick. Not sure I'd want to be starting Guiu

Too many risks for me. Frimpong, DeCuyper, Wirtz, Arias and Gyokeres are all new to the Premier League. Guiu is doubtful to start, Ait Nouri isn't nailed and is with a new team in a different role.
And you have Munoz on the bench?? Good luck with that.

Prehaps too many differentials for my liking, some of them like Sarr, De Cuyper and Arias will be great picks later but maybe not from the start

Any consensus here on the best 6.0 defender?

I was on VVD but thought Sundays game was unconvincing. Maybe RAN or Cucu until Gabriel's fixtures are better?

RAN for me but that comes with a health warning given who he plays for

We will be a lot tighter with Todibo/Aguerd/Killman this year with Potts sitting

Id probably go Diouf as he is a wing back, not too sure on Brightons set up
