With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) nearing, our pundits are giving us their all-important team reveals!

Here, FPL Milanista – who has three top 5k finishes in the last five seasons – explains why he’s going with Arsenal’s premium midfielder.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

The 2025/26 Fantasy Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the most dynamic we’ve seen in recent memory, not just because of player transfers and fixtures.

It’s because of a major rules tweak that’s already changing the way we look at our squads: defensive contributions (DC).

DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTIONS – A CHANGE IN FORMATION?

FPL Gameweek 9 differentials: Jota, Martinelli + Murillo 2

In short, defenders will get rewards more fairly for their real-life work. This might just flip the FPL meta on its head.

Historically, defenders in FPL have lived or died by clean sheets, with only the attacking full-backs offering consistent value.

But this year, blocks, interceptions, and other defensive contributions are actually rewarded, making even centre-backs more viable.

This change significantly raises the floor for defenders. Suddenly, you’re not just relying on a clean sheet or the odd goal from a corner – you’re getting steady returns from solid performances.

As a result, I think we’ll see many FPL managers pivoting to a 4-4-2 or even a 4-5-1. These are formations that FPL managers have drifted away from in recent years but could now offer optimal balance and points potential.

Personally, I’m seriously weighing the value of a strong fourth defender versus a mid-priced forward. Right now, I’m on a 3-5-2, but the more I look at defensive value (especially among £4.5–£5.5m defenders with high CBRIT potential), the more tempted I am to switch.

BENCH BOOST IN GAMEWEEK 1?

FPL 2025/26 first draft team reveals: DC magnets + Bench Boost

With double the chips this season, the temptation to use a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 was and is still very real. There’s a certain logic to it: everyone’s fit, fixtures are fresh, and we’ve had time to tinker.

However, we have been gifted a few incredible budget-friendly players in Marc Guiu (£4.5m) – a potential starting striker at a bargain-bin price – and Martin Dubravka, who could/should be a starting £4.0m goalkeeper. They are too good to ignore in any draft we make, and the fact that we are not sure of their fitness to start the season adds ambiguity. It is a valid reason to shelve the Bench Boost for now, unless one is prepared to ignore such minimum price gifts and build a strong 15-man squad with an eye to Wildcarding early and fitting them in sooner than later.

GAMEWEEK 1 TEAM REVEAL

Now, onto the individual picks.

Saka (long term pick) or Wirtz (shorter term)?

I get the appeal of Wirtz, but new to the league. Saka more reliable?

Saka tough fixtures to start, as an Arsenal fan - i'd go for Wirtz for upside + fixtures then see how he gets on

Arsenal’s first two fixtures are more blue than Liverpool’s lol

Agree Saka seems "safer" and am set up to jump to him if Salah's form fails to improve. But also have Wirtz - and prefer him over Saka - for early run of fixtures. He looks good for the money. Plus likely to want to choose between Gyok and Saka and risk making the "wrong" choice by moving now.

I’ve just flipped to Saka with a view to captaining GW2. Not certain on it but both have fairly sticky starts

Anyone tempted with 4 at the back?

    Munoz / Porro / Tark / Murillo

or is it better to go for a 6.5 mid instead like Ndiaye etc..

    1. Fiasco da Gama
      11 months, 7 days ago

Maybe 3/4 but only if I drop Gyokeres, which I don't want to do. 4 is a bit much for me.

    Sanchez
    Porro, VDV, ?
    Salah, Wirtz, Bruno, Palmer, ?
    Watkins, JSL

    Dubravka, Richards, Esteve, Guiu

    Complete the last two places?

    A Anderson and Konsa
    B KDH and Williams

Would you change anything else with this draft?

I'd have some Forest defence over Konsa. Andersen boring but get it. Unsure on KDH but I'd go with B for Williams out of the two.

Do expect us to be much better this year, but still not double up territory

Thanks. Have a soft spot for Konsa as did well with him later last season. But have Watkins - and probably Rogers - and the triple seems excessive. Plus Diouf looks exciting.

I'm beginning to come around to Cody Gakpo. On a points per minute basis (which I know can sometimes be very misleading) he averages out at 6.4ppg from last season which takes him well up the rankings and values him at least a million above his current price. He looks as though he's going to be starting games for the time being so I think he might be a reasonable punt.

Was him plus 1m or Wirtz and went Wirtz. Can't unsee 9 goals and 3 assists in home games last season and 1 goal 1 assist in away games playing more mins away

I think the quote below suggests importance it will be Gravenberch (after suspension) + one of Mac Allister/Szoboszlai in the double pivot

Arne Slot on Ryan Gravenberch being missing :

“Last Sunday, the chances we conceded because we lost the ball and they could counter us. Ryan takes good care of the ball, but anyone can lose the ball. It's clear he's had a big impact on us.”

Hey all, what do you think of this draft? Wanted to go a little lighter in defense because I'm unsure how Liverpool and City will cope defensively with all the changes.

    Sanchez
Aina Diouf De Cuyper (Konsa Hartman)
    Palmer Wirtz Cunha Kudus (Potts)
    Haaland(C) Watkins J.Pedro

Thanks for the feedback, got Neco in for Aina!
I like Kudus and Cunha - they're both great players with potentially high output + Cunha might play up front until Sesko's ready.

Hi all, almost locked in. Any changes to be made?

Idea is to rotate VDV, Diouf and De Cuyper in defence, and Reijnders and Evanilson for last attacker.

    Sels
    Neco DeCuyper VDV
    Salah Saka Wirtz I.Sarr Reijnders
    Watkins JP

    Dubz Evanilson Diouf Esteve

I think salah is the big question mark for start of this season. He could be off it, like v palace so the key thing will be how quickly you move off him, like haaland last year. I’m on salah cap as BOU is a great first game. But A is very strong, prefer it to B
