Chip Strategy

This season, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have been given twice as many chips, which includes two Free Hits.

Similar to the use of the first Wildcard in recent seasons, the first one must be used before the Gameweek 19 deadline.

The addition offers FPL managers extra opportunities, rather than simply waiting for a Blank or Double Gameweek in the second half of the season.

Consequently, Gameweek 2 has been identified as a possible opportunity to use it.

Many FPL managers will have already decided on their chip strategy, of course; however, for those who haven’t yet fully committed, we look at the potential pros and cons of a Gameweek 2 Free Hit below.

We’ve also put together a couple of team drafts to consider.

GAMEWEEK 2 FREE HIT: THE PROS

FPL Gameweek 30 round-up: Tuesday’s goals, assists, bonus points + stats 6

FPL managers have traditionally favoured using the Free Chip in a Blank or Double Gameweek, but it seems unlikely we will get either in the first half of the season, unless there is a postponement for bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

As a result, there isn’t really a standout time to play it, so why not use it in Gameweek 2?

It could help you navigate a Gameweek in which several key players encounter difficult matchups.

Liverpool have a potentially tricky trip to Newcastle United, who limited Aston Villa to just three shots and 0.2 expected goals (xG) on Saturday. Even before the red card, Unai Emery’s side failed to conjure a single effort in the first half.

Therefore, for those who have Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) and Florian Wirtz (£8.5m), you may want to freshen up your squad and seek out players with more favourable fixtures.

Tottenham Hotspur face off against Manchester City, too.

Those who have stacked up on Spurs assets such as Pedro Porro (£5.5m), Micky van de Ven (£4.5m) and Mohammed Kudus (£6.5m) may want to remove them for a week.

You’d then get them back for Bournemouth, West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweeks 3-6.

Gameweek 2 fixtures sorted by difficulty on our Season Ticker

Instead, you could triple-up on relatively low-owned Arsenal assets against newly-promoted Leeds United.

You also wouldn’t have to worry about holding them for the games against Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Man City and Newcastle which follow. They simply switch in and switch out.

Bournemouth also have a very decent fixture in Gameweek 2 after starting the season at Anfield.

A Gameweek 2 Free Hit does have its merits, then, depending on the makeup of your squad.

Is this worth a free hit.

Or just do Pedro to Evanilson?

Not the best start so want to do something aggressive and different.

    Sels
    Porro - Neco - Diouf
Salah - Writz - Palmer - Rutter- Rogers
Pedro - Watkins

Dubravka - Kroupi Jr - Andersen - Rodon

If you need to do some catching up, a lot of people are transferring Pedro out so he could be a bit of a differential vs Westham.

    Hi all.

Going for my standard aggressive WC after a very nice start (73)
Haaland is i reckon a close to perma captain this year:

    Sels
    Cuca Gabriel Ait-nouri
    Saka Palmer Anderson Reindeer Sem
    Ekit Haaland (c)
    Dub Esteve Bjiol 4.5

-Plan is to move Saka > United mid week 3 > then move onto a Liverpool Mid week 4. The cash will eventually get Isak with if he moves. Want Gvardiol longterm over Ait-Nouri and Isak over Ekitike.

    Any obvious misses?

Wood is interesting , but i cant see him over Ekit currently as he is getting all of the liverpool creativity. Liverpool have scored in every game for almost a year now. Forest did well but thats alot of Brentford as i feel

        Wood has:
week 2: He plays palace - very good defence , blanks
week 3 : West ham, decent game, a chance of returns
week 4: he doesnt start due to international duty , will drop back in price
Week 5 - 6 are the best fixtures and he could be gotten then ( may flip semenyo for him for example) , but also these fixtures to me look good for Nuno to introduce the many new attacking options - especially if he has blanked since week 1.

My problem with this transfer is that nothing has changed for Joao Pedro and Evanilson that we didn't already know before GW1. We knew that JP was a minutes risk and we knew that Bournemouth had good fixtures after Liverpool so you might have chosen Pedro for a reason right?

It's not enough. Watkins does well you might want to keep him or shift to Ekitike. Pedro is a more likely makeweight for a structural change that requires more transfers.

tough to comment on whether its right to sell pedro, but liked the way Bournemouth's attack looked against liverpool. brooks on the left and semenyo on the right hitting the byline should give evanilson plenty of service, hope they stay that way round and dont go back to inverted wingers

The only player I'd move for this week is Reijnders. If you started with a dud differential like Paqueta or Malen, you move to Reijnders immediately imo although it could be too late now since he went up 0.1m.

I think Bruno is going slightly under the radar after that performance tbh.

One of the most difficult fixtures and he still could have walked away with a haul on another day (pen which should have been given, assist to put Cunha 1v1, 1 off defcon points, bonus)

Bruno dropped really deep after Sesko came on. I'd go Cunha or Mbeumo, if I were buying a ManU midfielder now.

any thoughts on Romero this season? do you think he might be a DefCon magnet under Frank and his aggressive style of defending, with some serious goal threat to boot? when the 3 CB formation is rolled out he should be the central CB so defcons shouldnt take a hit. made captain now and new contract so maybeee wont be so rash in the tackle and getting cards 😀 not bad for 5mil or nah? possibly demands of CL will be too much for Spurs' defence to stay solid not sure

Chelsea were all over the place at the back v Palace, I’d be tempted to give Bowen another week

Keeping my Spurs assets against City (Richy and Porro).... hopefully a repeat of Madders birthday last year..Porro 15 pointer could easily be 18-20 pts

Early days but this looks like the main boon of DC points. In reality I think it's more likely a 1pter could be a 3pter but yes, if you have a quality defensive player with a tough fixture, play him.

    Play one:

    A) Frimpong (new)
    B) Porro (mci)
