The Scout Squad sees our in-house team discuss who they think the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players are for Gameweek 3 in isolation.

Sam, Marc, Tom F and Neale explain their picks for the upcoming Gameweek in the article below.

MORE ABOUT THE SCOUT SQUAD

Scout Squad Gameweek 1

The focus is only on the upcoming Gameweek with the Scout Squad, so there’s no medium-term planning involved.

The players who get the most votes are much more likely to make the Scout Picks, although the final XI can’t exceed £83.0m – so occasionally, we have to source cheaper alternatives.

Each of our writers must meet the following requirements for this feature:

  • At least one sub-£5.0m goalkeeper
  • At least one sub-£5.0m defender
  • At least one sub-£6.0m midfielder
  • At least one sub-£7.0m forward
  • No more than three players from the same club

    B) Palmer + Guiu > 7.3 mid + Wood

    Sanchez
    Tark/Porro/Aina
    Salah/Palmer/Wirtz/Kudus/Reijnders
    Watkins/Pedro

    Dubravka/AWB/Rodon/Guiu

Currently on WC and got both Haaland/Salah into my draft.. any changes here? Leaves me with 0.3m in the bank.

    Sels
    Livramento - VDV - Lacroix
    Salah - Semenyo - Kudus - Reijnders
Haaland - Wood - Joao Pedro

Dubravka - Gudmondsson - Van den Berg - King

If you get the chance to get Xavi Simons over Kudus I would do it.

I think Richards over Van den Berg for a Palace double up would serve you well.

      Otherwise looks solid.

Thinking the same, looks like he’s not involved in the game until wirtz/ekitike/gakpo are subbed. But still 1+1 is not bad

He’s been getting luck points last 2 GWs but that’s still more than I’ve been getting from Wirtz.

      Defensive contribution (DC) points-wise, he’d have snaffled a so-so 14 of those in 2023/24.

Will Garnacho become nailed starter in a few weeks or heavily rotated? What do you think
Not much competition on the left wing. Neto is better from the right and the Dortmund guy is krap

    1. Holmes

Likely to get rotated based on fixtures, will need an injury to get completely nailed.

    4. Tonyawesome69

Difficult to see Neto ahead of Palmer and Estevao at RW. Neto will be competing with Garnacho on the LW. Garnacho right footed will give a different dynamic compared to Neto left footed at RW.

      1. Tonyawesome69

        Neto left footed at LW*

Not sure I agree with that.

He will for sure get less minutes at RW than when it was just him & Madueke competing for the slot - but think you're undertaking him a bit. Don't forget that we actually shifted Madueke out to LW to put Neto on his favoured RW.

Palmer is going to get plenty of minutes at #10, and whilst Estêvão is fantastic - he is still very young, needs to work on a few areas of his game*. There will be subs both ways.

(*Maresca blamed the goal we conceded on him losing the ball, albeit maybe to keep him grounded.)

Mix in the fact we will have so many games, both will get lots of minutes.

With Garnacho coming in LW is very much going to be Garnacho/Gittens - but Pedro can play there too (and probably will a few times).

Wrong. Will he nail LW? Probably not, as Maresca likes lots of winger options - but I see plenty of LW starts for Garnacho going forward eventually.

Think he needs time to bed into the team honestly. Has had good flashes but he wasn't all that effective against Palace, then rotated out the next match.

With competition now including Garnacho, it will be difficult to predict starts IMO.

      Tarko and Sels.

    Is Haaland in:

    A) worth a hit this week (if captaining?)?

Yeah, feels like tempting fate not having him at the moment.

Question is largely which of these frontlines looks better, ahead of a defence of Sels Dubravka // Porro Konsa Diouf Diakite Hartman…

Salah Rogers Kudus SARR REIJNDERS/other £5.8m
        Haaland Watkins Guiu

I think yes, MUN might be terrible but this fixture is a must-pick for captaincy option from their squad.

NFO hates having the ball, so does WHU. Not many counter-attacks with WHU hoof-ball to target forward. No chances for Wood...
I expect some odd goals from both sides here just because game will not be structured at all imo.

NFO had more possession against both Brentford (Wood brace) and Palace. They don't have to play counter-attacking.

So you’re saying a well drilled successful Forest side playing a Hammers team which had let in 11 in three is worse for cap than a player from a shambolic United side, who have scored twice both times v Grimsby?

Is Reijnders actually the best and most consistently reliable option at his price or below? Or is there merit in going for a less popular (and slightly cheaper) Tavernier (still nailed with Bournemouth’s new signings, Cherries fans?), Elliot Anderson, Stach, Cullen, Jhon Arias, etc?

Probably until Pep drops him for a game and everybody panics.

It's hard to call the best 5.0-5.5m player at this stage. DEFCON helps their floor and bit always predictable.

Think with these you need to pick one or two and just hold them for a range of GWs rather than keep swapping round. They typically have lower direct goal threat so unpredictable to know when the points will be picked up.

I started with Anderson & Reijnders GW1. Fine with theory behind that & plan to hold for a few more weeks.

He was never the priority ahead of Garnacho. Garnacho was always going to happen - just had to wait long enough in the window that United would finally cave-in on the fee.

Don't think Pedro's stint vs. West Ham at #10 made a difference. We knew Pedro could play there before we signed him. West Ham were awful anyway. Research into him & Xavin would have been done a while back.

We haven't got the Jackson or Nkunku deals sorted just yet, and Xavi was only coming in if we had sorted those/space for him, from what I've read. Probably speak volume we never actually submitted a bid - it was probably just a good market opportunity available.

Totally understand picking Spurs from a minutes perspective for Xavi. He'd be first choice there. Probably not here, or with way more competition.

Chelsea had him down at 25m (which is probably 5m shy of his true value).

But United caved at 40m + 10% sell on? Lol.

For Antony and Sancho yes, but it's not Garnacho's wages that are the issue - it's the fact that we so publicly froze out 'The Bomb Squad', told the world we don't want them, then turn around and wonder why nobody's offering us market rate? If he had actually been involved this season (even just as a bench option), he would have fetched well more than that easily.

I think Leeds might beat Newcastle given there's still no striker, no Gordon, no Joelinton, potentially no Tonali. Midfield feels a bit flimsy

Leeds also have Tanaka, Ampadu and Okafor out - one of the fans I know reckons they get slaughtered again

Wish the transfer window was over already. Makes any planning so difficult.

There haven't been such an interesting window in a while, though.

I can work towards Watkins => Haaland in a couple of moves. Question is who is the best replacement for Palmer up to 6.5:
    a) Enzo / Caicedo
    b) Grealish
    c) Rice
    d) Other

Tavernier seems good value at 5.5

I have Gyokeres and captained him last GW but he seems limited af. I´m selling, owners keeping?

I would keep him if you have him already. Havertz injured so will play probably.

He is on pens regardless if Saka starts or not.

Yeah makes sense but he´s not a top level striker and fixtures are bad upcoming gameweeks

      I sold him for Pedro

Dango or BJ/Kudus for my last midfielder on WC?

New Spurs signing will impact the current Spurs mids but hopefully they're set for WHU next week.

On a wildcard and I have Johnson, is Simon's a threat to his mins?

they definitely are, but maybe more in bigger games. Simons can play from the left, alongside Tel etc.

Frank in the big games clearly favours a more defensive no10 eg Sarr or Bergvall

I am sticking with Johnson on my wildcard. I like it goal threat whether they have Xavi Simons or not.

The rest of his play is so bad though, it's only a matter of time before he's dropped - it's either him or Sarr and the latter's been brilliant

anyone considering WC should really hold off.

so many transfers still to go through which could change our view on Newcastle, Spurs, Liverpool, Brentford etc

    Benching Gakpo and starting Semenyo.

In this case should I start Timber or VDV? Timber will double up with Raya and VDV with Porro.

Arsenal are very difficult to break down and will limit Liverpool’s attacking ability. Benching Gakpo as I prefer not to bench I.Sarr, Semenyo, Cunha, Johnson, Haaland, Wood or Pedro.

Just Palmer -> X here? Candidates being Sarr, Gakpo, Cunha and Bruno (probably in that order):

    Sels
    Milenkovic, Porro, Rodon
    Salah, Palmer*, Rogers, Reijnders
    Watkins, Wood, Gyokeres

    Dubravka, Diouf, Esteve, King
