A superb free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.5m) clinched a narrow win for Liverpool over Arsenal on Sunday.

Our Scout Notes reflect on the match at Anfield.

SZOBOSZLAI STARS

In a closely contested affair, both teams found it difficult to break each other down, with chances few and far between.

Indeed, Liverpool and Arsenal combined for just 1.0 expected goals (xG):

Szoboszlai, who was the clear man of the match, finally broke the deadlock on 83 minutes, as Arsenal conceded a goal for the first time this season.

Liverpool made just one change from the dramatic 3-2 win over Newcastle United, with the fit-again Alexis Mac Allister (£6.5m) coming in for the benched Curtis Jones (£5.4m).

It meant Szoboszlai once again showcased his incredible versatility, as he played at right-back for the second match in a row.

The former RB Leipzig midfielder obviously loses a lot of open play goal threat playing in this position, but his passing was superb on Sunday, and he did rack up the defensive contributions (DefCons), with 14 in total.

In a much-improved defensive display, Szoboszlai also helped Liverpool keep their first clean sheet since Gameweek 33 of the 2024/25 season.

Discussing his excellent free-kick winner, the Hungary international said:

“Well, luckily since we started the season we could practise some free-kicks. I felt this was a little bit further. I was like, ‘I’ll take a risk.’ I was confident in myself so I tried it. Finally! Long time ago. It was a long time ago [the last scored one], when you practise all the time. To be honest, I should mention Trent [Alexander-Arnold] because, as you know, he was taking the free-kicks because obviously he has an unbelievable shot. But finally, I could have my chance and did it.” – Dominik Szoboszlai

SALAH + WIRTZ QUIET

Elsewhere, Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) and Florian Wirtz (£8.4m) were once again quiet.

Salah couldn’t find much space down the right flank and was let down by a few heavy touches. The Egyptian has now produced just one shot and 0.05 xG across his last two matches:

He does, at least, face newly-promoted Burnley next.

As for Wirtz, the match largely passed him by, and he eventually went off with cramp (more on that below).

Hugo Ekitike (£8.7m), meanwhile, saw a goal ruled out for offside.

SLOT ON KONATE + WIRTZ’S FITNESS

In addition to Wirtz, Ibrahima Konate (£5.5m) also had to go off.

The Frenchman limped off gingerly on 79 minutes and was eventually replaced by Joe Gomez (£5.0m).

Arne Slot offered an update on the fitness of both players after the match:

“He thinks it is cramp and I have no reason to doubt him, although sometimes players talk about cramp and then we make a scan and it is more than that. Jeremie Frimpong wasn’t too happy, like some pundits and journalists, when I took him off against Bournemouth because he thought he only had cramp, or only felt a little bit, and he is already out for two or three weeks now. Let’s wait and see.” – Arne Slot on Ibrahima Konate

“It wasn’t an injury, it was a welcome to the Premier League! After 85 minutes, I don’t think he knew he could have cramp in so many different places and that’s what happened. That is welcome to the Premier League, that is welcome to playing in this intensity against an Arsenal that can play really intense as well. If you bring in – as we do – very, very good players, so, so, so talented but from different leagues and young – Florian is 22 and 23 Hugo [Ekitike] – I think it is normal if you are not 27 or 28 you maybe need to make a step towards the Premier League and that’s what these two are doing.” – Arne Slot on Florian Wirtz

SALIBA INJURY

Arsenal had their own concerns, too, with William Saliba (£6.0m) forced off due to injury in the first few minutes, having hurt his ankle during the warm-up.

Cristhian Mosquera (£5.4m), the summer arrival from Valencia, quickly replaced him as the right-sided centre-back.

On Saliba’s fitness, Mikel Arteta said:

“He twisted his ankle during the warm-up, and he came in and he said he believed that he could carry on and play, but straight away in the first two actions, I could see that he couldn’t cope, and we had to get him out unfortunately. But thank God we had Mosquera, which we put in for the first time in the Premier League. His debut, not expecting it at Anfield, and I think he was really, really good. I am [worried about Saliba] because you cannot play a game of that stature. After you tried [to], that means that there is something wrong.” – Mikel Arteta on William Saliba

ARSENAL BLUNT IN ATTACK

Arsenal had Liverpool pinned back for large periods on Sunday, yet their approach was overly cautious, resulting in no big chances being created.

Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m) didn’t even register a single attempt on goal.

Alisson Becker (£5.5m) made a good save to deny Noni Madueke (£7.0m), Arsenal’s brightest spark, but Mikel Arteta’s side showed very little imagination, despite the second-half introductions of Martin Odegaard (£7.9m) and Eberechi Eze (£7.5m) for his debut.

Riccardo Calafiori (£5.6m) recorded the most shots for the visitors, with three.

No defender has registered more goal attempts than the Italian over the first three Gameweeks:

I'm going to wait until new signings have had at least another gw or two. There are going to be some serious striker dilemmas.

If you're like me with a midfield besieged by expensive injuries, guiu, and double forest defence it's tempting, but holding is going to be really strong if you're able to. Much easier to see how the new signings bed in.

        For me personally:
        - Palmer, Wirtz, Cunha are all elite players that could easily play 90 next week, or at least the week after. Hard to justify a WC
        - Forest defence has 2 great fixtures after GW4 and they haven't suddenly become an awful team
        - Chelsea have sold a couple of strikers, Guiu has plenty of minutes potential at Chelsea. I still like the 2 striker setup so why am I WCing him out anyway
        - Price changes are a trap and a good proportion have already been missed by now

        Hope that helps

Agree with all that. Things change so much early on, tend to settle down a bit after window closes.

I think a good time to play it will be the second IB, I hope to wait until then with the aid of a FH between GW4-6.

I think so if he gets 120+ mins for Sweden. There's then 6 days before Burnley, so he'll have a few days to train.

Hopefully the Slot presser clears things up.

He took all the most negative parts about Peps philosophy (possession, extreme focus on not losing the ball at the cost of creativity) but instead of adding in a player or two who is allowed attacking freedom as his way to create chances he decided that set pieces would be where he gets his goals. So they are like a monstrous amalgation of the parts of tiki taka Barca everybody hated and Stoke negativity.

Konate had a good game yesterday against Gyokeres. The match up suited his skill set. It will be interesting to see how Slot will manage Guehi v Konate.

Konate has not signed a contract extension yet, and the signing of Guehi probably reduces the likelihood of him doing so.

I really dislike Chelsea's multiclub/buying 50 players thing as a football fan, but between that and the long contracts it's a great way to protect player value. Just a nonsensical striker market this window, Jackson has a good attitude and potential/proven at elite level.

I'd also guess Bayern are probably quite desperate for someone, I know they missed out on Wolte

It's essentially impossible to know right now. I'm a Newcastle fan, but I've read enough about pool over the summer to get a general idea.

I'd guess Gakpo would drop out and Isak/Etikike would be flexible position-wise alongside Salah - combined with Ngumoha competing for mins I'd be concerned if I had Gakpo. We don't really have any idea on Isak's fitness but he was training alone and if he's playing for Sweden he's probably pretty fine.

Worth noting Sweden's second match is Kosovo 5 days before the league is back, so it's unlikely Isak/Elanga is going to be wrecked after an intense 90 min international game.

Not heard of that. He didn't want him to leave/be force sold - but according to this report Marc informed the club right after our win last night he wanted to join Liverpool - so if true not allot we can do https://x.com/BobbyManzi/status/1962521391229551092

Individually, none of them are that appealing anymore, though. With the exception of Wirtz, any one of them can haul in any given GW.

It's so tough for these mid table club managers. They do all the hard work for 2 seasons, and when the time to reap comes, their best players are sold, they leave the club, and start all over again. Almost pointless.

Welcome to what it’s like for lower league clubs all the time.

At least Prem teams don’t get their academies raided so they can’t even develop good youngsters.

I’m struggling over Gakpo or Wirtz. I think Gakpo has more chance of being benched but Wirtz will always start. Ekitike likely will move left. Thoughts?

As for now. Gakpo Xmins > Wirtz Xmins.
Won't overthink that before Isak even kick a ball

Gakpo's minutes will be more at risk than Wirtz for sure. But he has just signed a new deal and is in good form. It's a headache. I have Wirtz but if I was to WC I don't think I'd have either.

Last season Liverpool had five forwards - Salah, Gakpo, Diaz, Jota and Nunez. But the latter two were often injured or out of favour.
All scored points, but Gakpo, Diaz were never outstanding picks, given the sharing of minutes, and when compared to midfielders from other teams.

Five again this season, but of more elite quality - Salah, Gakpo, Ekitike, Wirtz and now Isak.
Tough. Wirtz probably get more minutes but he hasn't settled in yet.
If anyone deserves to miss out more often it's Salah.

Liverpool’s best three midfielders are Grav, Mac and Szobozslai.

I'm just guessing but I think Slot really likes Gakpo and expect him to start the vast majority of games still. Think there'll be quite a lot of rotation between Isak & Ekitike. Don't see this affecting Wirtz much

I've been thinking about this too.
Really hard to know how they will set up now (with such an embarrassment of riches!)
I currently have Wirtz (and he's been really underwhelming) and Gakpo has looked good - but will his mins be impacted!

              Hard to tell.

They will all be impacted - just as all the attacking players (bar Salah) were impacted last season.

I think those saying that Wirtz has been underwhelming are looking at it from a purely FPL perspective. He is settling and looked decent last night. He's only going to get better none of the other options are as good as he is in that no.10 role.
