This two-week international break provides each Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager with time to think about whether a Wildcard activation is needed to fix their early problems.

Here, eight-time top 10k finisher Zophar talks us through his current position on it.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

FPL 2025/26 first draft team reveals: DC magnets + Bench Boost 1

It’s been a rough, low-scoring start to the season, where the top one million rank is approximately 27 points worse off than 2024/25. This has only exacerbated the variance factor, with some teams doing significantly worse than others.

As human beings, when faced with adversity or disappointment, we naturally respond by taking action. For example, myself and many others who’ve had a poor Gameweek before the international break will be tempted to activate a Wildcard, as it takes immediate, proactive steps to rectify the problem. It’s how we are programmed to cope.

The easy response is that it’s too early to Wildcard because we don’t know enough. And while yes, I do agree with that general wisdom, I don’t think it should be a blank, all-encompassing statement.

It’s not just the classic ‘team-specific’ line, but there are opportunities over the next three-to-four Gameweeks to gain some ground and future-proof yourself for the fixture swings of later on.

So, while I do advocate holding this chip for later, I want to share a couple of Wildcard drafts that I’m using as a benchmark.

This is an exercise I like to do during the early weeks. See how far my team is from ‘the ideal 15’ and calculate how long it’d take to get there.

DRAFT ONE: NO HAALAND – BUT GAMEWEEK 6 FREE HIT

Could Zophar use his Wildcard by FPL Gameweek 4?

Defence

Here, I’d have David Raya (£5.5m), although I think that’s too much money to spend on a goalkeeper.

Arsenal have the best defence by far, there’s no doubt about that, and I think their defenders are a bit too pricey this year, given they won’t often bring in defensive contribution (DefCon) points.

This decision prepares you for their nice Gameweek 7 fixture swing, while the Gunners’ immediate hosting of Nottingham Forest also looks good for a clean sheet. Visiting Newcastle United in Gameweek 6 won’t be a problem because that’s when a Free Hit is planned.

DefCon monsters Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) and Marcos Senesi (£4.5m) play for solid defences and are racking up these new points. Considering they offer some goal threat too, the duo look like great value.

Similarly, Tosin Adarabioyo‘s (£4.5m) starting spot looks nailed now that Chelsea have failed to sign an additional centre-back. Plus, he possesses decent DefCon potential.

Joe Rodon (£4.0m) looks like good value, as Leeds United have kept clean sheets in both home fixtures. Meanwhile, Daniel Munoz (£5.5m) is great for the upcoming Crystal Palace run and can be converted to almost any other defender down the line.

Attackers

I would have had Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m) here, but his hamstring injury looks bad. Therefore, I’ve gone for Jack Grealish (£6.7m) instead.

As for Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) and Lucas Paqueta (£5.9m), they’re good for DefCon, play 90 minutes and take penalties. Strong long-term picks. You can go for Tijani Reijnders (£5.7m), though. I still think he’s a great pick.

Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) stays, keeping Gameweeks 4 and 5 in mind, whereas Antoine Semenyo (£7.4m) looks like an expected goals (xG) monster.

Up front is an all-London trio. Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m) for Arsenal’s upcoming run, Joao Pedro‘s (£7.7m) minutes look great now that Liam Delap (£6.4m) is injured, and Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m) can profit from Palace’s next two fixtures.

DRAFT 2: THE HAALAND VERSION

Could Zophar use his Wildcard by FPL Gameweek 4? 1

As the image below shows, Erling Haaland (£14.1m) is miles ahead of the rest in terms of xG (see below). So, if you want him for the long term rather than just a Gameweek 6 Free Hit, it’s easier to get him now.

Could Zophar use his Wildcard by FPL Gameweek 4? 2

Only two downgrades are needed to convert Gyokeres into the Norwegian. Out go Raya and Fernandes for Djordje Petrovic (£4.5m) and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5.0m).

In my first draft, Paqueta is usually the eighth attacker to bench, but in the second, it’ll be Dewsbury-Hall, while either Paqueta or Reijnders start each week, which is still quite good.

Petrovic is undoubtedly a downgrade from Raya, but I prefer spending £4.5m on a goalkeeper anyway.

We will be discussing these drafts – and more – on The FPL Wire’s first international break episode. You can check it out here.

Is it?! Feel like having both KDH and Grealish is excessive Everton, Paqueta unsure of too, and the defence isn't that great either.

        Meh. It's not very inspiring.
It just looks like the best team of the week from last week.
KDH Grealish Paqueta Sensei, they all scored well last week, throw them in a wildcard draft!

Got a big disconnect between my 'fires' (2 or 3 non-playing subs, plus Watkins) and the players I really want (Haaland).. Planning to WC in GW7.

    Sels | (Dub)
    Gudmunson - Tarko - VVD | (Murillo - AWB*)
    Salah (C) - Reijnders - Palmer - Bruno - PM Sarr*
    J Pedrio - Watkins* | (Guiu*)

    2 FT | £0.0m ITB

    Should I:
    (A) Palmer & Watkins > King & Haaland
    (B) Something more balanced to put out the fires(*) and wait until WC for Haaland

      Palmer could be fit.

I have also read rumours Sarr has a grade 2 tear Hamstring.and withdrew from international duty.

Wait for more news I’m afraid

Difficult to say without knowing rest of your team, but I think there are far worse options. He must have nearly best xMins of City mids and attacking potential was there even in a poor City performance vs BRI

Thoughts on the below WC draft:

    Vicario
    Munoz / Cucurella / Virgil
    Gakpo / Kudus / Semenyo / Eze
    Haaland / Isak / Muniz

    Dubravka / Dewsbury-Hall / Senesi / Gudmundson

    0.8 ITB

Appreciate Isak unlikely to start first week and will monitor Gakpo's minutes. Any other thoughts?

Taking hit because we think it will pay off over the course of few game weeks it’s absolutely fine,

Johnson, Sarr and Guiu wont start and Esteve has Liverpool. You need a -4 to field 11 essentially.

If you're happy with "minutes", you could hold. It is West Ham at the end of the day.

A WC would give you a better overall squad, though, I must admit.

I genuinely think I'm going mad. Why would you wildcard this team? A hit and it's fine.

Would a wildcard team look even better? Of course it would. Like it would every week. But there's nothing unfixable about this team, and we don't yet know what the template is going to be come GW5 or 6.

He has also DC pts and is a bonus magnet. Yellows are annoying. Salah has been playing too wide, but has pens also. Those two can possibly be compared when captaincy isn't a factor. Price difference comes into play then.

You taking about imaginary points in some alternate universe.

What I’ve seen from him and United doesn’t warrant 9m spend, especially with the fixtures coming up.

Struggling against Burnley, how do you think they will fare against actual PL teams.

It’s an irrelevant question based on “what if”.

There was no pen against Arsenal and he took his penalty against Fulham like a upset prima donna.

My answer is - Bruno playing for struggling United side led by a manager who gave up on life is not worth 9m.

It's really not irrelevant - it's highlighting how fickle it is to make a statement like that after only 3 games.

So, I'll ask again - 10 points against Arsenal + 12 points against Fulham + 10 points against Burnley, are you still saying he's not worth the money? (would make him the highest scoring player in the game btw)

There was no pen against Arsenal and he bottled his chance against Fulham.

United barely managed to beat a newly promoted side - but yeah I guess in another reality Fernandes is a top pick…

What if Salah didn’t get his late returns?

What if Palmer didn’t get injured before trashing West Ham?

                        Pickford didn’t save a penalty?

What ifs don’t matter pal, you could build “what if” argument for every player in league.

He'd still be being questioned for playing too wide and following his awful form for last season. There's already questions about whether he's worth it with Gakpo, Ekitike and now Isak knocking about.

Assuming he contributed, people would say 'told you so' and keep him during Chelsea's fixture run. If he didn't, people would ship him out en masse in rage.

Nothing would change, some people would have different points totals? Don't really get the relevance of this one.

                        ...

Wow, look at that - it IS possible to answer these hypotheticals!

If he should have got the penalty Vs arsenal he shd also not have got one Vs Fulham. You might argue it was one but those hardly ever get given

Also 3 pens in 3 games would be insane luck. He's just got a double digit haul and some are selling on WC which shows it's just not all about recent points, so I doubt getting points only from Defcons and pens is going to affect decision making if anyone was looking to sell anyway

I'm just saying if he was sat there on 32 points after 3 GWs, which is highly plausible, there's no way anyone's on here talking about he's not worth the money.

Yeah you're right about how the general consensus works around here.

I personally think he wouldn't be worth 9m even with those points, but that's just me..doubt he'll be getting penalties as frequently

To be honest, I'm looking at all the premiums and wondering if ANY of them are worth it. They all have their own caveats and narratives, it could end up being one of those seasons again, like last year (Salah aside of course)

if Bruno was 8m - i'd have definitely gone with him however I am in similar boat considering Mbeumo and Cunha are also returning good stats ... Surely Sesko will soon come in the mix which might mean Bruno will be more in middle rather than up forward.

Do you think Munoz is worth the .5 over Lacroix? He offers more attacking, but Lacroix gets more DC points

probably not. in truth i think munoz only really got dc points this week because villa heavily prioritise attacking down their left hand side.

lacroix should've got 4-5 attacking returns last season as well. if he can get there this year and deliver on his underlying stats threat think theres a chance he even outscores munoz, let alone matches him

How will Guehi mentally react and is he really going to be immediately fine and able to give his best? Probably yes, and so on, but there has to be s risk factor and we can't be certain imo. Had Guehi gone to Liverpool I would be very tempted to get VvD, but now unsure.

To be honest, cheap defenders and players like Grealish, Paqueta, Semenyo and Gyokeres look like possible traps. Historically those first three haven't been that great picks and Gyokeres is still a question mark. Not playing WC is not good, but WC failure with no way to get out ouf it feels even much worse. My team isn't optimal, but only one is injured now and many have good fixtures after this gw. They all can basically bounce back. So I am considering to take red arrow now, but catch it later with WC I can trust.

Agee that it's likely the more expensive defenders will start scoring soon. But I reckon Gyko is a sound pick. Main man and on pens, no Saka for abit and he's probably a better root to points now anyway.

Grealish was a good fpl pick at Villa. Think being the main man will suit him

I don't think Grealish, Semenyo or Gyokeres are traps. All sound picks IMO. Agree on Paquetaa though - a very emotional and streaky player playing for a very streaky team. I would avoid him

Could be the IB, Boredom or just being unhappy with a few players - but is anyone considering to play FH? Would probably keep salah, go Gakpo and VVD.

    1. Sir Michael Taker

No because I have no idea who is likely to play in GW4 from some of those teams with the new signings, the injuries we know about but don't really know about, the injuries to come over the IB we might not know about. Its that Rumsfeld quote, there are very few known known's for GW4 so I can't FH with any confidence at all. Same goes for a wildcard.

Besides double Forest defense, I think my starting 11 is okay in Paper i guess

    Sels
    Milenkovic Porro Munoz
    Reijnders Gapko Bruno Semenyo
    Haaland Gyok Pedro

    Dubravka Rutter Dorgu Esteve

I want to use my BB chip as soon as possible but can’t figure out a week when I can use it

    1. GW4: sels, Milenkovic vs Arsenal, Dorgu vs City if he plays, burnley vs Liverpool. So not a good week
    2. Gw5: sels, milenkovic and burnley playing each other, dorgu vs Chelsea… so maybe okay but not so great either
    3. Gw6: burnley vs city… so not a good week
    4. Gw7: burnley vs villa… so could be good week
    5. Gw8: burnley vs Leeds… so probably the best option

So gw7/8 are good options but it is too far away to even plan.

If there are no injuries on the IB what should I do with my 1ft and when can I use my BB?

    Afternoon all,

Thoughts on the below WC draft:

    Vicario
    Munoz / Cucurella / Virgil
    Gakpo / Kudus / Semenyo / Eze
    Haaland / Isak / Muniz

    Dubravka / Dewsbury-Hall / Senesi / Gudmundson

Appreciate Isak unlikely to start first week and will monitor Gakpo's minutes. Any other thoughts?
