The festive fixture bonanza begins tonight at Old Trafford as Manchester United host Newcastle United.

The 20:00 GMT kick-off not only gets Gameweek 18 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) underway but also begins a run of 40 Premier League matches in 14 days.

TEAM NEWS

How will United get on without Bruno Fernandes? This is the first time he’s been absent from a league squad in almost exactly a year, with his last missed match ironically being Newcastle at home in December 2024. The Red Devils lost 2-0.

He’s injured and makes way from the line-up tonight but Casemiro returns from a one-match suspension to take his place.

Lisandro Martinez also comes in for his first United start in over 10 months. He replaces Leny Yoro in the only other alteration Ruben Amorim has made to the side beaten at Aston Villa.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are unchanged from the 2-2 draw with Chelsea last Saturday.

There’s no Anthony Elanga, who reportedly has an ankle injury.

Nick Pope does make his return after a month out with a groin issue but is only among the substitutes.

£4.4m FPL midfielder Lewis Miley continues at right-back.

LINE-UPS

Manchester United XI: Lammens, Heaven, Martinez, Shaw, Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu, Mount, Cunha, Sesko.

Subs: Bayindir, Zirkzee, Malacia, Yoro, Fredricson, J Fletcher, T Fletcher, Lacey, Mantato.

Newcastle United XI: Ramsdale, Miley, Thiaw, Schar, Hall, Bruno Guimaraes, Tonali, Ramsey, Jacob Murphy, Woltemade, Gordon.

Subs: Pope, Joelinton, Wissa, Barnes, Willock, A Murphy, Shahar, Neave, Alabi.

But put off of Cunha after last night but he could still do well against these weaker teams.

Could be a good short term punt. We need some more help from scout on the man u defence.

Dorgu was OOP and never got subbed last night which was a good sign that the manager trusts him.

Given maguire and De lit are out for a few weeks. Lisandro is back
The only nailed on man u def is Shaw, Dalot and Dorgu.
Heaven, Yoro and Lisandro will fit for the other center back positions.

Lisandro could be an option to replace casimero over the nepo baby fletcher if Amorim wants to tinker again with benching casimero mid game.

If you've got many FTs in the pocket then you may get away with 3 MUN and non ARS.

Bowen over Sesko, Keane over Dalot, Rice over Gordon are my preference.

Because everyone's focus will be on today's games and not last night's. I helped craft the editorial strategy on this website back when Mark was in charge and there is a unwritten rule not to publish scout notes from a previous day in-between the 3 dugout discussion articles on a Saturday's morning, afternoon and evening.

Why does it matter what order you read the articles in if they are published same day? Does not impact the game in anyway?

You know what, I work mad hours all year, it’s nice to have this break. We got lots of outdoor toys to play with too so off to the park shortly to use the new scooter. Looking forward to the games also, not that I’ll get to watch many.

I have Dalots 12 pointer on my bench and brought in Lammens for Vicario last night as he was dropping in price. In 2 gameweeks I’ve somehow ended up with double defence on a team that has kept 2cs all season…

It could pay out in the upcoming Wolves Leeds and Burnley games. That's why I'm so hysterical. There are lots of points to be had for United and Newcastle (and Liverpool) in the next 3/4 gameweeks and I don't want to miss them. It's crazy how the fixtures have shaken out with these teams playing the 3 worst teams in the league in quick succession.

I'll never understand people paying money to play a free game, but each to their own.

You weren't promised an article this morning in time for your pot of coffee. No doubt there will be a round up at some point. It's not like you're waiting for a scheduled train that hasn't turned up.

No doubt, as an experienced player, you've already planned for fixtures and transfers, so no real issue here.

I haven't got a clue about the man united defence. It'd be nice to get some insight on who is nailed. Plus most of the writing staff are Newcastle fans so they will give us nuggets of info that we wouldn't have known.

Maybe start watching football yourself, if you're that bothered.

What is there to learn? Pope might be back next game. Rest of Newcastle defence is settled until players come back from injury in January. Our attack is poor and will continue to have minutes managed.

Man Utd may or may not play with 4 or 5 at the back. Dorgu and Dalot look like being nailed during AFCON.

That's off the top of my head.

There are juicy games in very quick succession. Getting the nailed players is crucial. For example, Schar looks like he's due from last night but will they get centre halves back from injury and can we trust Howe's injury updates.

You don't trust Howe. No sign of Botman or Burn being back starting in the coming week.

I don't trust Howe but his injury news updates aren't as deceptive as people think when they are not about an upcoming, immediate fixture.

Neither does Amorim so the fpl scouts are not going to be any use to you;-p

What we know so far is as follows:
in a back 3 given maguire and de light are out, it is dalot, heaven/Lisandro, Shaw,
Dorgu is right wing back to replace Afcon Amad.
In a back 4, he can add Yoro or Lisandro with Heaven in the middle.

Given mainoo is still injured, there is no adequate replacement for Casimero, lisandro > Nepo baby fletcher are the alternatives.

Given he likes the wing back system and due to shortage of adequate replacements, I prefer dalot and dorgu for points potential due to attacking returns or assists and goals. In short, Dalot > Shaw > Dorgu.

Mount and Cunha in 10 and Sesko or Zirkhee upfront.

    This looks like a save?

    Raya
    Timber VVD Nunes
    Saka Semenyo MacAllister Wilson
    Haaland Ekitike Thiago

    Dubravka LeFee Rodon Mukiele

Can do Rodon to Dorgu, but who gets benched in that case?

Bench macAllister for Dorgu against wolves. Has much greater upside and is in form v MacA at leeds.

2FT (zero ITB) and need to lose Semenyo. Who would you downgrade to free up funds? Kinda want Gordon but don't want three Newcastle attackers. Also feel like I need to upgrade Senesi or Andersen.

    Raya
    Timber - Chalobah - Andersen
Foden - Semenyo - Rice - BrunoG- Szob
    Haaland - Ekitike

    Dubravka - Wolte - Senesi - Gudmund

They will have to bounce back at some point on the road. Burnley is a good fixture to do it but I just can’t bring myself to back them at the moment

I have had gordon for his 2 ten pointers but I wouldn’t buy now. I’m keeping until 21/22 or whenever the fixtures turn, & buying Rice or Neto. And Gordon is the best of a mediocre bunch.
