We’re looking at the key Fantasy takeaways from the penultimate weekend of pre-season friendlies in our Scout Notes.

Here, we focus on the games involving Newcastle United and Hull City.

Valencia 1-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Wissa x2
  • Assist: Toure

Newcastle United XI: Hornicek, Shahar (M Miley 46), Thiaw (Johnson 72), Botman, Pivas (Charlton 67), Bamba (Steur 46), Ramsey (Joelinton 67), Elanga (J Murphy 39), Woltemade (Willock 67), Barnes (Toure 46), Osula (Wissa 46).

SCOUT NOTES

  • Matthias Jaissle took charge of Newcastle for the first time on Saturday, overseeing a victory over 10-man Valencia. The incoming head coach sent his side out in a 4-2-3-1.
  • The injury crisis at full-back necessitated run-outs for youngsters Leo Shahar and Miodrag Pivas. Lewis Hall (£5.0m) could, at least, be back for the next friendly against Everton, having left the training camp in Spain to manage a minor issue. Tino Livramento (£5.0m), however, has not been seen since undergoing calf surgery in June.
  • New signings Bazoumana Traore (£6.0m), Lukas Hornicek (£5.0m) and Aladji Bamba (£5.0m) made their debuts, while Joelinton (£5.5m), Nick Woltemade (£6.0m), Malick Thiaw (£5.0m) and Yoane Wissa (£6.0m) appeared for the first time in pre-season.
  • Bamba and Jacob Ramsey (£5.0m) formed the double pivot in the first half, with impressive teenager Sean Steur (£5.0m) and Joelinton replacing them in the second. Steur, constantly showing for the ball and making more passes into the final third than any other Newcastle player, looks a hell of a prospect, but alas he may be more of an ‘assisting the assister’ type on first glance. Bamba, occasionally dropping between the two centre-halves, was more of a mixed bag. Neither player got anywhere near DefCon returns, although they did only play 45 minutes apiece.
  • Toure was more eye-catching from an FPL perspective. Replacing the sub-par Harvey Barnes (£6.0m) down the left flank, he looked quick and direct. He assisted Wissa for Newcastle’s winner, while he also teed up Jacob Murphy (£6.0m) for a huge chance that the long-serving winger skied. One to watch.
  • While the new intake impressed, Murphy, Barnes and Woltemade weren’t great. Woltemade, operating in the 10, especially looked leaden-footed, which isn’t ideal when you’re playing for a manager who wants to be as quick, aggressive and direct as Jaissle. Anthony Elanga (£6.0m) did look sharp on the right, harshly (it seems) denied a goal for an offside. He also seems to have escaped serious injury; he was subjected to an awful challenge that led to Valencia going down to 10 men.

“Thank God, Anthony is okay. He seems to be okay.” – Matthias Jaissle on Anthony Elanga

  • Grabbing the headlines was Wissa. Replacing Will Osula (£6.0m) at half-time, he narrowly nodded over his first chance of the game before pouncing on a Valencia error to level the game up at 1-1. Again, good work from Toure – this time in pressing – helped. Toure then crossed for Wissa to bag the winner. After an injury-plagued 2025/26, Wissa will be hoping to get back to the levels that saw him plunder 18 league goals in 2024/25.
  • There were some wobbly moments at the back, it has to be said, but some better understanding with new ‘keeper Hornicek, who predictably looked good with his feet, will hopefully come. The new Newcastle shot-stopper was beaten early on by a fine strike from distance. Also at the rear, Sven Botman (£5.0m) was the only player on show to hit the DefCon threshold (12/10).
  • With Hornicek straight into the XI, Nick Pope (£5.0m) seems to be on his way.

“I had a talk with Nick. I really appreciate what he did in his career so far. He knows exactly the situation right now and we need to deal with it in the best possible way, but I always appreciate the player and the human being behind.” – Matthias Jassle, via BBC Sport

  • Overall, then, a heartening result for Newcastle after a dispiriting few weeks. It should be said that Valencia were 1-0 up when they were reduced to 10 men, so the win has to be placed in context. Still, the Magpies looked to be hard-pressing from the off, aiming to break with directness and speed when able to. Newcastle ended up 1.69-0.61 ahead on xG.

Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 HULL CITY

FPL pre-season: Maatsen impresses, Pau update + McBurnie goal

Hull City XI: Tzolakis (Phillips 91), Coyle (Robinson 61), Ajayi (Okike 77), McNair (McCarthy 8 (Ashbee 91)), Giles (Targett 77), Slater (Silk 77), Hjertø-Dahl (Ömür 61), Crooks (Moore 77 (Ocaya 113), Belloumi (Akintola 61), McBurnie (Sellars-Fleming 77 (Matique 113)), Millar (Dowell 51).

SCOUT NOTES

  • With less than a fortnight to go until the big kick-off, Hull City are still in a state of upheaval. Players are arriving, or being linked to the club, at a furious pace, while existing squad members are dropping like flies at a similar rate. Paddy McNair (£4.0m) and Liam Millar (£5.0m) are the newest concerns after hobbling off in Germany, while John Egan (£4.0m) wasn’t risked. The social post above provides a neat summation of where we are on the team news front, with manager Sergej Jakirović offering more detail below:

“Today, we lost Paddy [McNair] with some pain behind his knee, and we already lost John Egan with an ankle problem. Liam Millar has a dead leg, but I think he’s OK. I started to laugh when I saw him on crutches. Jens complained a little about his groin. We will know more after Paddy’s medical check.

“John Egan got a kick on his ankle against Kasimpasa, and he trained normally for two days, but then he felt uncomfortable, and we didn’t want to take any risks with him. It was a precaution for him to stay behind in England, and we hope he will be fine to play next Saturday against Nice.

“Jack Butland has an elbow injury which he picked up in training. He will go to see another specialist, and then we will know more after he’s seen this examination. Yes, I am concerned about it.

“Cody Drameh has a problem with his hamstring, which he picked up in the first half against Kasimpasa, and is likely to be out for two to three weeks. He had this problem last season.

“With Destan, it was either his knee or his head. We will see. He reported an issue with his MCL, and we will see in the next few days what will happen with him.” – Sergej Jakirović, via Hull Live

  • Jack Butland‘s (£4.5m) injury pretty much ensures, as if there was any doubt, that fellow new boy Konstantinos Tzolakis (£4.5m) will be between the sticks come Gameweek 1. He made his debut here, playing the first 90 minutes of a two-hour-long game.
  • Jens Hjerto-Dahl, who arrived just a day before the game (and yet to be priced up by FPL), also made his Hull bow. Playing in an advanced midfield role behind Oli McBurnie (£5.5m), he looks a physical presence and could be a threat at set plays; four of his seven Eliteserien goals in 2026 have come from headers. As mentioned above, he was feeling his groin, so we’ll have to see if anything significant comes out of that.
  • Regan Slater (£4.5m), probably the current best hope for Gameweek 1 minutes among the £4.5m midfield tier (but whose longer-term prospects could be affected by more new arrivals!), had Hull’s best chance, bursting through on goal and seeing his shot saved; a tactical push in the back sent him off balance. Goals aren’t something we can really expect, of course – he scored just twice last season.
  • McBurnie couldn’t steer Ryan Giles’ (£4.0m) delivery on target, in Hull’s other decent chance.
  • Frankfurt probably merited the win, creating the better opportunities. They did have to rely on a route-one goal for their opener, however, and it also came from a free-kick taken from the wrong position. Remember that the German side were in the Champions League last season, so this was a step up in opposition. Given the pace at which new signings are arriving at Hull, this is also a Tigers XI that may be significantly different come Gameweek 1.

Need a bit more clarity on the plan for Osula. A nailed Wissa outclasses the rest of the 6m forwards easily though. Could make a mockery of the price tag.

After about 200 drafts, I’m thinking this for the first three / four weeks then I’m thinking either WC or Mbuemo > Sarr after G3/4 to free up some cash. Only pick I’m not sure of is Neco, but think he’s the pick of the 5.0s. Still not sold on Mosquera over Gabriel, certainly not long term. Bench is weak AF but whatcha gonna do! Appreciate any thoughts or comments!

    Verbruggen

    Shaw / Neco / Gabriel

    Groß / Mbuemo / Bruno F / Szoboszlai / Le Fee

    Pedro / Haaland

Bench: Palmer / Diop / Thomas / Destan

If you are BB 1 attacking N Williams Vs Leeds at home , for Hume instead of the doubling up on the Sunderland defence ?

      Maguire for Shaw perhaps too.

All depends on your budget lol

I know how you feel about Forest. Though MGW proved me wrong last season !

Home advantage on the opening PL season is a big factor with the crowd. Glazner's attacking formation like a Palace wing back formation.

N Williams is a good price and no European footy for them this season. Long term investment too.

What you're failing to take into account is Elliot Anderson has now left, and playing Leeds these days, especially with their recent additions of Tarik Muharemović and James Trafford, are not an easy team to play against, they're definitely a better team than Nottingham Forest, at least in my opinion anyway!

Yes Leeds are difficult to play against, even before the signings you mentioned.

My point was the BB1 option of N Williams attacking threat at home opening day fixture, instead of double Sunderland defence team.

Forest may play very good football under Glasner and compete. Who knows.

      Close one here !

Sarr I like and a nice differential and Palace fixtures are good.

Anderson has the kinder fixtures and new club bounce. He is also advance attacker too.

With the new transfer for Bruno G I would definitely go for Sarr and Anderson. No guarantee that Bruno will start right away

Surely there won't be any doubles during the first half of the season to hold the BB for? Seriously tempted to use it in GW1.

I am too but can’t get a team I’m completely happy with to use it on. Prefer no Bruno drafts but it makes me uneasy

    2. Jules-C
      2 hours, 18 mins ago

I think either GW1 or GW2 is a very good shout. Just depends on what players you prefer. If you go big on Coventry/Bournemouth it’s GW2, otherwise GW1. Doubles are highly unlikely in the first half, and using your BB early means that you can then take a lot of money out of your bench

    3. Pariße

Thoughts on this GW2BB, GW3WC team?

    Lammens, Dovin
    Calafiori, Gvardiol, Ballard, Shaw, Thomas
Saka, Semenyo, Mbeumo, Le Fee, Gross
    Haaland, Pedro, DCL

    Bank 0.0m

    Maybe Saka -> Palmer GW2

    1. The Philosopher

BB2 plan with 0.0 itb is risky in case something happens in GW1. Either BB1 or keep some money in case it rains.

    2. Conners
      • 7 Years

      AFAIK Dovin won't play

A couple of tweaks to get Bruno and you probably have a good long-term team that doesn't need an early WC

I wouldn’t trust Saka and Dovin. How about Petrovic and a midfielder that is a bit cheaper to leave you some room for changes to GW2? You could downgrade Le Fee to Sangare and go Petrovic and Saka/Palmer if you’d like

People are questioning Saka's fitness a bit too much. It's probably safer to start with Semenyo and Bruno at the moment, but his minutes were managed at the World Cup, and the last time he played, he scored a hattrick. Talisman of the champions, probably on penalties too, he's going to be a safe route for points eventually.

    1. Jules-C

Also, I’d consider Kluivert instead of Rayan when looking at Bournemouth. Seems to be back on pens and he has been very good in that no. 10 before his injury season. As long as Kroupi is out I think he will start and he is 0.5 cheaper than Rayan

The handicapper has definitely dangled a carrot as far as Wissa is concerned. I thought he was at least 0.5m undervalued last season off the back of his 24/25 exploits and now he's dropped another 1.5m after an inauspicious 25/26 campaign. He showed during the World Cup that he hasn't lost his nose for goals and if it looks as though he's nailed a starting spot by the time the season starts I might have to nudge DCL out the way for him. There's a lot going on at Newcastle of course but who knows, they might surprise us all.

Iwobi and Le Fee, then you can use that to upgrade 35-year-old Gross.

Pretty sure Gross only needs 1 leg to match the scores from these two.

I've entered a cash league based on telegraph FFL where you pick a set-and-forget 4-3-3 team with one extra pick for each position as a sub .for the season. Three premium strikers limits elite others but need regular starters.
    How's this
Raya (Trafford); Tarkowski Van Hecke Vuskovic Palaestra (Van Ewicke); Semenyo, Mbueno, Rogers (Estevao; Haaland, Isak, Jaoa Pedro(Brobby)
    Thanks!

Probably next to impossible but feel like I’d still want Bruno in that sort of format. Mbeumo might not be a long term starter with Amad and Sesko when the season gets going.

Thanks. He was in my first draft but was so expensive. I can afford him if I swap Isak for a cheaper forward I think, so lll review that.

I haven’t strayed too much from this BB GW2 draft for awhile now. Opinions welcome

    Lammens
    Gvardiol, Hume, Shaw
    Semenyo, Mbuemo, Wirtz, Le Fee
    Haaland, Isak, Pedro

    Rushworth, Kluivert, Thomas, Van Ew

    Thank you

Nice team you have and the BB 2 players are fine too.

Depending on your remaining funds. Maguire for Shaw or Ballard for Hume may give more goal threat from set pieces.

Maybe downgrade Kluivert for another BB player if you decide to upgrade any of the above mentioned if funds are tight

0itb currently but have looked at some cheaper mids such as Sangare to upgrade Shaw to Maguire.

I prefer Hume to Ballard OOP and .5m cheaper tbh. Obviously that is only if they don’t sign another RW.

        Thanks for the response

I have been thinking of a non Bruno F team myself. Yours is nice and balanced. Double Man U mid is not necessarily required as the team selection shows.

United will likely line up gw1 with the below. Amad or Dorgu are not good picks after then. So unless your double is Bruno and Mbuemo, no point.

            Amad - Bruno - Dorgu
            ——— Mbuemo ———

              Exactly this !

I tend to think that if your have Bruno F in this season's FPL team. You need a Boomo who is also on pre season form, may get the goals.

So thats £20m for those 2 alone. Fine option to have both of course. Just template without much rank movement I guess

Sunderland still haven't signed anyone for right wing yet.. and previously linked players looks to have gone cold.
This means 4.5 defender Hume will likely continue playing OOP for the start of the season anyway..
Scored two goals towards the end of last season and another one in pre season this weekend. The manager id a big fan and plays him right back, left back, right wing and sometimes in a hybrid role where pops up in midfield and even up front.

Think he's worth a short term punt for for good early fixtures

Maybe on set pieces, nailed at left wing (unless Spurs buy another winger), has played as a nine in the past and playing in a more attacking team than last year.

If Solanke is injured I think it increases his appeal. They’re seemingly in for Gakpo which would be LW. He has looked sharp in pre season.

City are so static and stodgy with no movement off the ball. No interchanging of positions; wingers stay wide, central players stay central.

Complete opposite of Man Utd v Atleti where the attacks were vibrant, energetic and unpredictable.

    City 0-1 down atm.

        2-1

        Marmoush G, Semenyo A

Same again. Semenyo wide left (probably offside), crosses to Marmoush for a tap in. I think VAR rules that out.

How is Foden performing today ?

Has been given the central role behind the strikers in pre-season so far.

Worth having or still lacking form and confidence perhaps

Critical season for Foden. If he doesn't get back to his best playing for City.

Underwhelming tbh. Doesn't look at his best. Safe passing & erratic shooting.

In terms of his role, he comes deep in the build up, and then gets into the box when the ball goes wide. There's potential for some big chances. But personally he's an avoid for me until he looks sharper and more confident.

I would find the money for Semenyo. He looks absolutely electric.

We remember Dele Ali being an incredible young talented player at Spurs and for England.

Then just like that. His form and game went to pieces. He did have personal issues and mental health in his life however.
