We’re looking at more Fantasy takeaways from the penultimate weekend of pre-season friendlies in our Scout Notes.

Here, we focus on Liverpool v Monaco and Arsenal v Borussia Dortmund.

LIVERPOOL 2-3 Monaco

  • Goals: Isak, Wirtz
  • Assists: Gravenberch, Isak

Liverpool XI: Alisson (Mamardashvili 46), Frimpong (Ramsey 75), Ndukwe (Endo 46), van Dijk (Chambers 60), Tsimikas (Kerkez 60), Szoboszlai (Elliott 75), Gravenberch (McConnell 60), Koumas (Chiesa 75), Wirtz (Nyoni 60), Gakpo (Ngumoha 60), Isak (Munoz 60)

  • It was a tale of two halves at Anfield on Sunday. Liverpool led 2-1 at half-time, but experienced a rapid drop-off after the break.
  • Alisson Becker (£5.5m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Cody Gakpo (£7.0m) made their first appearances of pre-season, while for the second successive friendly, Alexander Isak (£9.0m) led the line with Florian Wirtz (£7.5m) in the ‘10’.
  • Liverpool’s attack looked really sharp for 45 minutes. Isak netted the opener with a well-taken finish, before Wirtz swept home the second after a goalmouth scramble. The hosts were unable to sustain their level, however, as Monaco fought back to win 3-2.

“I think we are, right now, especially considering we won the first two games but the last two we cannot sustain the level that we want for all the game. As soon as we have made some changes they start to get tired, we cannot sustain that level, so we have work to do.” – Andoni Iraola

  • Despite defeat, it was an encouraging display from Liverpool’s front two. Isak looked sharp and delivered his first attacking returns of pre-season, while Wirtz found plenty of space between the lines, scored and forced a decent save from the Monaco ‘keeper, with four shots in total.

“I feel good, I feel good. Every game hopefully should take me to a better fitness level, so that’s what I’m working towards. I think today felt better than [the] last game and hopefully the next game feels better than today. That’s what pre-season is for – building – and that’s what we have to keep doing.” – Alexander Isak

  • It was a quieter afternoon for Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m), who played in central midfield alongside Ryan Gravenberch (£6.0m) before pushing further forward late on. He failed to have a shot but did produce three key passes.
  • Andoni Iraola made six substitutions on the hour mark, with Victor Munoz (£6.5m) sent on for his Liverpool debut.
  • Defensively, however, there were issues. 18-year-old Ifeanyi Ndukwe partnered van Dijk at the back and was solid for the most part, but the Reds let a two-goal lead slip for the second successive pre-season friendly.
  • Iraola at least hopes to have Jeremy Jacquet (£5.0m) back for next weekend’s clash against Como. Ronald Araujo should arrive from Barcelona on loan too, so reinforcements are on the way.

“Jeremy Jacquet, we were in doubt whether to put him [in the squad] today, we decided not but he should be fine for the next one. It is taking a little bit of time, as we expected. Curtis [Jones], he has trained every day but yesterday finished with issues in the hip. It doesn’t look anything big but it didn’t make any sense to risk and those are the ones, more or less, closer to a return.” – Andoni Iraola

ARSENAL 2-3 Borussia Dortmund

FPL pre-season: Tzolis “sharp”, Timber, Saliba + Jacquet injury latest 1

  • Goals: Nwaneri, Gyokeres pen
  • Assists: Tzolis x2

Arsenal XI: Kepa (Meslier 46), White (O’Neill 77), Mosquera (Ogunnaike 77), Gabriel (Hincapie 60), Calafiori (Salmon 60), Lewis-Skelly, Odegaard (Nwaneri 32, Viera 77), Havertz (Martinelli 77), Dowman (Julienne 77), Tzolis (Ibrahim 77), Gyokeres (Jesus 77)

  • Despite having a greater share of possession (56.5%) and registering 14 shots to eight, Arsenal were beaten 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.
  • Mikel Arteta made two alterations to his starting XI from the previous friendly, a 3-1 loss to Real Betis: Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m) and Martin Odegaard (£6.5m) in for Piero Hincapie (£5.5m) and Ethan Nwaneri (£5.5m). Odegaard played for just over 30 minutes before a pre-planned substitution, having only recently returned from the World Cup with Norway.
  • The Gunners lined up with Ben White (£5.5m), Cristhian Mosquera (£5.5m), Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m) at the back, with Myles Lewis-Skelly (£5.5m) anchoring the midfield. However, they were a bit of a mess defensively and went in at half-time 2-0 down. They’ve now conceded six times across their last two friendly matches.

“… I think there were some poor moments where we were not very recognisable, especially in set-pieces and defending actions and timings that we are normally very efficient [in].” – Mikel Arteta

  • White did at least look decent offensively from right-back. Given Jurrien Timber’s (£6.5m) injury, he could have a bigger part to play at the start of the season. The same applies to Mosquera, unless Arsenal sign a new centre-back, of course.

“No, I cannot be very precise with that. Jurrien is progressing really well. He’s on the pitch, he’s doing quite a lot right now, but it’s still weeks away. I cannot tell you how much.

“William Saliba is in rest mode at the moment for two weeks. He had to do almost nothing, an aggravated injury, so it’s going to take some time to heal. We know that. And as soon as we have more news, we can inform you.” – Mikel Arteta on Jurrien Timber and William Saliba’s injuries

  • Nwaneri pulled one back for Arsenal after the break. Viktor Gyokeres (£7.5m) then netted from the penalty spot, with Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) getting another assist. On some set-pieces, the Greek winger was a real livewire down the left flank, and has now delivered five attacking returns in pre-season. One of Arsenal’s clear standout performers, he could well be a starter against Coventry City in Gameweek 1.

“Really strong. I think he looks fit, he looks confident, he looks sharp. He made the assist, he created a penalty, he had another two or three very good moments. His work rate is unbelievable so far – very good things.” – Mikel Arteta on Christos Tzolis

  • Elsewhere, Kai Havertz (£7.5m) got another start in midfield but failed to make much of an impact. Gyokeres, meanwhile, attempted four shots but was often clumsy in possession and didn’t have a good game.
  • As for Lewis-Skelly, he had to play as a No 6 simply because so many other midfielders aren’t available yet. That changes from Monday, with Declan Rice (£7.5m), Martin Zubimendi (£5.5m), Bruno Guimaraes (£7.0m) and Mikel Merino (£6.0m), plus several others, set to re-join the squad.

“Well, some of them were back today, already watching the game. Some of them, David [Raya] and Bukayo [Saka], were back yesterday, a bit earlier than expected, which is great to see. I think it’s a really good sign and tomorrow everybody will be available to start the training programme.” – Mikel Arteta

  • Arsenal’s pre-season preparations come to an end on Wednesday, when they face Como at the Emirates Stadium. Then, it’s the Community Shield against Manchester City on Sunday.

Some Bruno vs Haaland musings (early disclaimer, I'm in the camp of they're only worth their cost if captaining them - so I'm only going for one)

    Haaland + 5.5 =21
    Bruno + Isak =21
So I'm comparing these two pairs. I'm going to use assumptions that I think are consistently slightly generous and assuming no major injuries. Feel free to disagree with them!

Haaland: 35 games over the season, 30 goals, 5 assists, tends to only get bonus when he scores, so let's say 10x3 bonus and 10x1 bonus 245pts. Captained to 490

5.5: Sangare is being called "the new Anderson" but doesn't have set pieces. A different 5.5 could emerge. Anderson got 180pts with set pieces. Let's say that a 5.5 defcon machine without set pieces scores 25 less. So 155pts.

    Haaland + 5.5 = 645pts

Bruno: 35 starts, 8 goals, 15 assists. 5 clean sheets. Going to assume zero defcon from CAM role. Gets bonus more easily than Haaland, even a single assist can give full bonus for him. 5x1, 7x2, 9x3 bonus. 206pts Captained to 412

Isak: 30 starts (more likely to be rested or taken off early) 20 goals, 5 assists, 10x3 (when he double returns) 5x1 bonus. 190pts

    Bruno + Isak = 602pts

I was expecting Bruno+Isak to come out better, but doesn't look like it.

    Disclaimers:
Bruno and Isak gives you Isak as an alternative captain during his better fixtures, adding an unknown amount to their total.

I have assumed no major injuries. I accept that this is quite an assumption for Isak.

This is all assuming that the 3.5mil for Haaland over Bruno is all spent on one player. The difference between the two could easily be spread over anything from 1 to 7 other players. I did just one because the maths gets horrendously more complicated for more players involved.

With WCs and multiple free transfers, you don't need to just sit on one through the whole season, swapping could be best?

Haaland normally starts like a train and has decent fixtures to start, but missed the start of pre-season for the first time and has a new manager too.

Bruno doesn't normally start completely on fire, but has amazing starting fixtures.

Maybe you think Groß scores more than 155 for 5.5 That makes the Haaland combo better. Maybe you think everyone with Bruno would have the best 5.5 anyway (probably true) so the Haaland side actually needs to use the second best 5.5 - hurting the Haaland combined total.

    Any thoughts on all this?

I was initially firmly on starting Bruno with no Haaland. The style of City's play and particularly how Semenyo looks is making me look more to Haaland. This number crunching is swinging me further to Haaland.

Only issue I have with this is time frame of entire season. You can have all 3 as and when they hit their best set of fixtures.

Those estimates are also kind off what we say over-optimistic. I think only 1 out of them happens.

Initial phase is all about focusing on decent players with decent fixtures. Once we get some data, we can start projecting scores which usually doesnt work as we expect but atleast thats based on data.

Agree that I was on the optimistic side, but I tried to be consistently optimistic to keep it as fair as I could. And definitely agree on the fact that you don't need to look at the season as a whole.

I do think it gives something to think about though, especially for anyone weighing up which of the two to go for if they've decided not to have both.

Maybe I just have too much time on my hands while not working!

Its a good approach for draft game. In FPL, I feel everything goes out of window once the first KO whistle is blown.

      Thinking this should be hulked.
Normally I'd agree with selecting only one of the two, and that would be Haaland. But given initial two fixtures for United, I think I'll start with the two, and then reduce ditch one of them quite soon.
Should be mentioned that if going with only one of them from the start, I don't think there's a big risk of getting shut out by price increases, due to their already massive ownerships

Good point on the low likelihood of price rises. Helps jumping back and forth.

I still think that it's better to only go one of the expensive boys though. eg Neither are as good as Bruno individually, but Cunha+Mbuemo is 0.5 cheaper than Bruno + non-playing-fodder and probably scores more in those fixtures. Although if you want to double defence with Lammens+defender then Bruno looks better as you can't get both of the other mids then

        1. Pompel

It's perfectly possible to have Bruno + one of Mbeumo/Cunha + a playing fifth mid, e.g. Gross or even cheaper Nørgaard, even with the standard front three of Haaland + JP + DCL. Means goin a bit lighter in defence ofc, but eg. Mosquera + Gvardiol can still be fit in

Agreed, although I still think in this case that there's more upside to be found by losing Bruno and upgrading the defense.

I guess it's a case of taking both is the safe pick as there's a good chance they'll be two of the top scorers in the first few weeks. But there will definitely be plenty of combinations where spreading the funds scores more, and plenty where it doesn't! I'm personally finding it more fun trying to chase the bigger upside, but I'm appreciating the argument for going both more now.

I would have just Haaland, but, Bruno.F first 2 is hard to ignore, but after those I agree you only need one for captain reasons, that's when it gets fun spending Bruno money on whoever takes my fancy, Bruno + 1 should look better, but Haaland is just so inevitable

I think I'm just enjoying the game of trying to anticipate who those better options are in advance and saving the transfers by getting them straight away. Starting to appreciate how going both can be a safer plan at the start though

Doing something like this seems useful on paper, but then falls apart when you think about spreading funds and using transfers (as you mentioned).

You can make a really good team with both of them for now, and they could both potentially haul in the first 2 gameweeks, so starting the season without either of them doesn't make sense to me.

I don't disagree with this, but I just feel you can get so much more upside (although admittedly riskier) but not going both.

If you're locked on Haaland, then you could have (for example)
        Bruno, LeFee, Sarr or
        Mbuemo, Cunha, Semenyo
And I'd back the second trio to do better

          • 11 Years

You could very easily have a combination of those players + Haaland.

          4.5
          5.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0 - 4.0
          Bruno - Mbeumo - Semenyo - Sarr - LeFee
          Haaland - Pedro - 4.5

Even if you weren't going for an early BB, I wouldn't want that thin a defence. Though I can see how you wouldn't have to lose Bruno to upgrade it. In that example, Sarr>Groß gives 1m to upgrade the back.

I think going both is a much stronger option if you're not BBing early

How about Saka and Palmer, or Mbeumo and Rogers, predicting scores is fun, but they'll always let you down, its fantasy football after all, all we have to look forward to is disappointment and rage transfers lol

My issue with this is you are spending all the extra Haaland money on the least valuable position overall, forward, and picking the most expensive option too. Isak probably one of the worst value options in the entire game.

Meanwhile you fill the Bruno spot with one of the most cost effective slots in the game.

Its not a fair comparison. The haaland money is much better spent by upgrading several players across the team.

What you do show quite clearly here is what a poor option Isak is.

Very fair points. I went with Isak as I thought that was the player people would be most likely to put in if they didn't go Haaland. Then picked the mid that mathed out to equal cost. If I've helped show that Isak's rubbish then maybe that's something useful from all these ramblings! (Although I've been looking at him since the game opened, and still might get him even if I do go Haaland)

Completely agree that the money would be best used spread out, but my brain is not in a great place right now too try and put numbers onto those possible permutations!

I love this. Thanks for the write-up.

Wish it was this simple, though! I don’t think Isak will score that much, personally BUT I still prefer Bruno over Haaland.

Yes it’s Haaland + 5.5 player but I actually think going Bruno over Haaland allows you to upgrade 2-3 positions. So instead of two 5.5 mids, one is Szobo (7m). Instead of a 4.5 and a 5m defender, you have one 6m defender and one 5.5, for example. And you’re spreading the opportunity for points, rather than hoping the 5.5 player you selected with Haaland will get you 150-170 points

It's the Arsenal that would give me thoughts too. I think Tzolis has more potential upside than Odegaard so would change Ode myself. If you for for someone cheaper (Groß? Boring but good) then you could upgrade Davis if you don't want to rely on a promoted defender.

Some people would say not to hedge your bets with ELF and Davis cancelling each other out, but I personally don't mind that too much

In a game that's so unstable and every dime counts (at the start at least) I'd say no.

Maguire (whom I've never really liked) is nailed on for me, as is Shaw.

Yes, I am currently on the somewhat-templatey: Mosquera, Calafiori, Shaw, Aina, Hume.

Just feel like I am settling for those outdated nailed attacking fullback options because it feels uneasy to spend so heavily on the expensive DEFCON options

Le Bris seems to love playing him in midfield which was thought to just be a stop gap last season but then he continued doing so even when other normal midfielders returned from injury and AFCON.

Normal backline is Reinildo, Alderette, Ballard, Mukiele with Mukiele taking Humes traditional right back spot. But as above, Le Bris keeps wanting to play Hume and so puts him on the right wing.

There is no guarantee this will continue but he seems to be a favourite of Le Bris even when fans groin at the lineup

Slab head would be in mine if I didn't have 2 attackers and the cheaper Shaw, decent pick early doors, will have a point to prove after world cup snub, always a threat on corners

    Verbruggen (Kinsky)
Calafiori - Gvardiol - Shaw (Thomas - Van Ewijk)
Bruno - Mbeumo - Gross - Sadiki (Yarmoliuk)

Looks strong. A bit weak in the midfield, but that's what you get by going Bruno, Haaland and Isak.

I would drop Isak to a £6m and spend more in midfield - just personal preference. If Isak goes off you'll look like a genius 🙂

I think if you're going BB1 (so have a decent bench) or WC4 then it's worth the risk as he's looking like shaping up great against Coventry.

For a long term pick he feels very much like Trossard was, and however good he may have been on paper, none of us ever got him.

Wirtz is playing in the 10 seems rejuvenated with new coach, system etc..

He’s talented and looked good yesterday, positive pre season. Second year in the league so should be more settled.

Foden I have not given much thought. I know he’s been discussed as a “pillar” of the team, but with how Semenyo has looked would imagine more people are going there.

    GW 1 BB

0.5 m in the bank. Will be needed in 3 to get Haaland.

    Lammens - Roefs
    White - Mosquera - Gvardiol - Palestra - Hume
    Bruno - Semenyo - Mbeumo - Tzolis - Gross
    Isak - Pedro - Brobbey

    GW 2 - Save
    GW 3 - Bruno + Pedro ➡ Haaland (TC) + Slater
    GW 4 - WC

    Thoughts?

I think Isak is still slept on. He's a 20+ goal/season fwd. He hit 23 for Newcastle and outscored Haaland in fewer minutes.

He's absolutely capable of having an incredible season especially with a good team and new manager built to take advantage of his strengths. He looked decent at the world cup, has had some preseason mins. I think it's a risk worth taking.

It might be a case of Haaland + Isak up top at some point this season. I think 9.0m is still underpriced relative to the points/game potential he can bring. Gyokeres was 9.0m last season...

First changes to the team in a week.

    Kinsky Palmer
    VvD Gvardiol Mosquera Calafiori Davis
    Bruno Mbeumo Semenyo Wirtz Gross
    Isak Pedro DCL

    0.5m ITB.

I can do Bruno + Pedro > Haaland + 4.5m in GW3 if need be. Or Bruno + Isak > Haaland + Le Fee.

It's just solid. I want to invest more in defense this year. Probably will look to pick up a 5.0m defcon defender on first WC and go with a 4atb strategy. But for now, this looks tidy. I'm still keen on Bruno for first two fixtures then pivot.

Yeah, I didn't say what I meant very well theyre at all...

You said that option A is less of a benching headache with being able to put Gomez on the bench. If you went with option B you'd have DCL who you will want to play most (all?) weeks, so see what rotations there are in the rest of the team.
