Throughout the past week, newly promoted duo Coventry City and Hull City have snapped up three Scandinavian-based midfielders between them – Caleb Yirenkyi (£5.0m), Elliot Stroud (£5.0m) and Jens Hjerto-Dahl (£5.0m).
Yirenkyi adds to Coventry’s central midfield mix, while Hjerto-Dahl does the same at Hull. Stroud is a versatile left-sided player, who can play in both midfield and at wing-back.
WHO IS YIRENKYI?
Bought for an initial £23.1 million, Yirenkyi is a product of the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana and – like Mohammed Kudus (£6.5m), Simon Adingra (£5.0m) and Kamaldeen Sulemana – moved to FC Nordsjaelland.
There, Yirenkyi won the Danish Superliga’s Young Player of the Year award for 2025/26, reflecting how highly regarded he is.
Four goals and eight assists over two seasons don’t immediately grab FPL attention. But the latest campaign had him average a brilliant 13.05 defensive contribution (DefCon) actions per 90 minutes. That’s between the rates of FPL stars Elliot Anderson (£6.5m, 13.94) and Ethan Ampadu (£5.5m, 12.11).

Internationally, Yirenkyi boasts 15 caps, scoring both his goals in June – the second securing Ghana’s stoppage-time victory over Panama at the World Cup.
Although very capable of playing at right-back, Frank Lampard will probably use him in midfield.
WHO IS HJERTO-DAHL?
As for Hjerto-Dahl, around £8 million is going to Tromsø, the club he’s been at since the age of six.
The Norway Under-21 international has already reached 104 club appearances, including Europa League and Conference League action.
First used in a defensive midfield role, he’s been more of an attacking threat this year, having rejected a January move to Besiktas. His 6ft 4in frame even scored a hat-trick of headers on the opening day of 2026’s Eliteserien, part of the season’s impressive seven goals from 14.

His rate of 8.69 DefCon per 90 is less appealing.
Hjerto-Dahl made his debut as the most advanced central midfielder in Saturday’s friendly loss in Frankfurt. So, he’s maybe no immediate threat to the 2% owned £4.5m midfielder Regan Slater.
WHO IS STROUD?
Stroud joins from Swedish side Mjallby AIF.
He mostly played as a left-sided wing-back in Mjallby’s title-winning 2025 campaign, producing an eye-catching 10 goals and five assists in his 27 starts.
Interestingly, three of those goals were penalties.
And, indeed, his last significant act as a Mjallby player was a spot-kick in last week’s UEFA Champions League qualifier.
51 shots and 53 chances created in the 2025 Swedish league season would have been outstanding figures for a defender. Alas, FPL have classified him as a midfielder. Hull used a 4-2-3-1 for much of last season, and have lined up like that in pre-season, so a left-wing berth beckons. Liam Millar (£5.0m) is under threat, then.
On the international stage, Stroud featured in all four of Sweden’s 2026 World Cup matches.
ANY FPL POTENTIAL?
The main concern for FPL managers is that these additions are making it tougher to predict who’ll start, particularly when the Sky Blues and Tigers face off in Gameweek 2.
A good adaptation could see these rank amongst the best £5.0m midfielders, a price point that doesn’t offer a lot. But Yirenkyi – for all his DefCon potential – has only one remaining friendly to make his debut in.
Stroud will be worth monitoring if he does take over penalties at Hull (he has a 6/7 career record) but Oli McBurnie (£5.5m) took and scored three spot-kicks for the Tigers in 2025/26, so the responsibility may be the striker’s to lose.
