Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is live for the 2026/27 season, so we’re getting team reveals from a variety of contributors ahead of Gameweek 1.

Next up, Pete A, who won the official FIFA World Cup Fantasy game this summer.

Early-Season Strategy & Team Overview

World Cup Fantasy: Spain win the World Cup, Fernandez red card, Martinez + Romero injuries 4 no Bruno

Unpredictable Landscape

The early fixtures are tough to gauge. Michael Carrick has only been in charge for three months, yet only seven returning Premier League managers have longer tenures. Combined with World Cup fatigue and fresh European commitments, reliability in Gameweek 1 will be low.

Flexible Squad Construction

Early flexibility is crucial to navigate early variance, keeping an active eye on a potential early Wildcard or Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 strategy.

Goalkeepers

  • Senne Lammens (£5.0m): Strong early fixtures with clean-sheet upside. A great candidate for a Bench Boost strategy; he keeps squad flexibility intact without feeling forced into an early Wildcard. Robin Roefs (£5.0m) was another option here, but Lammens offered a safer longer-fixtures build.
  • Bart Verbruggen (£4.5m): Proven reliability with a strong defensive finish last season. Favourable early fixture rotation and high clean-sheet potential. I like Gameweek 1 for a Bench Boost, with Aston Villa’s disrupted attack and Brighton only narrowly beaten 1-0 in their last meeting with the Villans. A value pick in the absence of £4.0m playing ‘keepers.

Defenders

FPL notes: Timber + Calafiori injury latest, Gabriel returns + why Minteh was benched 4

Double Arsenal Defence

Late team news/pre-season line-ups will dictate the final selection, but I want double coverage of the best defence. Arsenal had six games without Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m) and as many without William Saliba (£6.0m) in the Premier League last season, so I expect they will be prepared well for the latter’s absence.

  • Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m): Calafiori is my favourite. He brings so much to the attack and I am expecting that he will own that left-back spot to start the season.
  • Ben White (£5.5m): White has been looking good in pre-season, chipping in with an assist, too. I do feel White/Timber could yet be the right-back/right-sided centre-back partnership. It depends on who Arsenal sign but a young right-back could open the door for that, as the key target will be not to overplay either player on their returns from injury.

Budget and Differential Picks

Looks a bit risky in the article.

Anyway - opinions on Hinshelwood? He's been a lock in my team however he rarely seems to get a mention here.

Hinshelwood is a good diff pick but people are understably looking at Gross if they are picking a Bri mid and then theres no space for him

He’s a lock in my team too. Hoping his ownership stays low 🙂

Personally going without Bruno is insane and going without Haaland far less risky. Can always swap GW3.

Bruno as number 10 in a settled side is an FPL gift.

It's fine to go without Bruno if you cover him with Mbeumo and Cuhna.

I’m struggling with this exact quandary

            A) Bruno & Le Fre
            B) Semenyo & Plamer/Saka

Depends what you do with the extra £7m saving. That's a huge chunk of change.

It only works for defenders at a minimum. I couldn’t cover Man City by going without Haaland and having Saviho and Anderson

The easiest way to get Andy's mask to slip is to ask him about coverage. You can probably find some old comments of him losing it on here when he used to be a mod.

It’s been months now since that orange box popped up saying there are difficulties posting comments. Months. Clearly it is never going to be addressed even though they’re working on it. I think the community here might be a legacy inconvenience for the owners. Many saw the writing on the wall years ago and set up another forum where you will never see a RMT (not the execrable Hub)! I would love FFS to continue forever but I think Holmes is right, it’s going to disappear at some stage and then Maid Template will expect me to get into the garden!

The site is decline, no question about that. There’s still some decent articles but fewer than 10 years ago, much more filler (like this piece), technical issues that go unresolved and a support email that often doesn’t respond.

Ha see below. I think Bruno will outscore Haaland purely because Haaland will play between 30-60 minutes imo. Bruno got full 90 and can see a 14 pointer with a pen and assist and clean sheet

GW12 for the free hit. Get rid of Arsenal and City, who play each other. Get rid of Liverpool who are at Everton.
    3 X Man U (BRE)
    3 x Palace (HUL)
    3 X Villa (ips)
    3 x Leeds (COV)
Then whoever you want with that, could keep Rogers (nfo).

Pretty happy with the attack, but interested to hear what you’d change before GW1. Mainly wondering if the midfield is too risky or if I should invest more in defence.

    GK: Kinsky
    DEF: N. Williams – Calafiori – Gvardiol
MID: Mbeumo – Foden – Wirtz – Tzolis
FWD: João Pedro – Isak – Haaland (C)

    Bench:
    GK: Palmer
    MID: Groß
    DEF: Maguire – Davis

What would you change? Any players you think are must-haves that I’m missing?

Looking for the last two spots in my team, 13.5M to spend. Plan is BB4, after downgrading Bruno and upgrade Dubravka and O'Shea:

    Kinsky - Dubravka
    Calafiori - X - Ajer - O'Shea - Thomas
    Bruno - Semenyo - X - GroB - Norgaard
    Haaland - J. Pedro - Calvert Lewin

    A) Gvardiol & Mbeumo (niet ideal for BB4)
    B) Virgil & Szoboszlai

Is Dango and Taverner the best BRE + BOU combination? Or would Kluivert + Schade be better? It has to be these two clubs.

Put off Brighton by their European commitments. Likely off to the Arctic Circle before the AVL game to play Tromso. That'll be a tough game and I can see the likes of Gross and Gomez rotated just when you need them. Someone like De Cuyper might get a random start on the wing v Coventry, for example.

Fair comment, I strongly suspect that we will concentrate on the league with any rotation being done in Europe, not the pre season game though which will be good for building fitness. The conference is going to be a big jolly for us, if we get to the latter stages that will no doubt change.

Guys, I moved to Tyneside in 2001 with my wife, 3 kids, my dog Fergie and my cat Giggsy. It was a big upheaval but boy Newcastle is a beautiful city. I went into journalism at this time, writing for The Pink. For this reason I need to have a Newcastle player. So is it..

Thanks guys. And great article above.

Wissa. How did you make the cat and dog get along? I’m partial to getting a Russian Blue kitten but am worried how mine war-hound, Teddy Boy the Labrador, will react. I watched Arsenal beat Newcastle during the Invincibles season of 2003-04 at Highbury, and was in the away crowd. Afterwards we went to the pub for Toon fans and they were absolutely magnificent people, full of life and fun even though they lost.

Best Haaland draft that I have come up with.

    Kinsky
    Shaw - Kadioglu - Mykolenko
    Bruno - Semenyo - Mbeumo - Wirtz
    Haaland - Pedro - DCL

    Dubravka - Reinildo - Slater - Thomas

Defensive upgrades with happen in GW 4 when Bruno âž¡ Palmer happens.

Can do something like Bruno + Reinildo + Shaw âž¡ Palmer + Munoz + Botman

Then Mykolenko âž¡ Arsenal 5.5 def next gw

    Thoughts?

Morning all, I’ve locked in, bench boosting and wanted 4 Arsenal for Coventry, will WC early so this is a very short team team, what do you think?

    Raya / Kinsky

    White / Gvadiol / Maguire / Shaw / Hulme

    Semenyo / Mbuemo / Bruno G / Tzolis / Grob

    Haaland / JPedro / DCL

Only injures will force me to open that transfer tab now, thoughts?

I’m going to roll transfers until the early WC, think I can probably wing it, yeah, one will have to go if I don’t WC (White or Raya)

You cant even open the transfer tab or it won’t let you confirm it again until you lose one.
