Arsenal defenders will likely form the backbone of many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads in Gameweek 1.

The best team in the division for clean sheets, goals conceded and expected goals conceded (xGC) last season, there is a very solid case for investment.

But with Jurrien Timber (£6.5m) and William Saliba (£6.0m) both set to miss the start of the season due to injury, which defender to go for?

Here, we take a look at the options available for FPL managers.

TIMBER + SALIBA INJURY LATEST

Arsenal's defence: An enduring obstacle or a false dawn

Timber (groin) and Saliba (back) are both going to miss the start of the season, with Saliba expected to miss significantly more time.

“Jurrien [Timber] is progressing really well. He is on the pitch, we are ramping up now, the volume and the load. I think he is in a good trajectory but there is still a few weeks to go.

“William [Saliba] as we know, is a more long-term injury.” – Mikel Arteta, speaking ahead of the Community Shield

HOW WILL ARSENAL LINE UP WITHOUT TIMBER + SALIBA?

With no Timber or Saliba, Mikel Arteta opted for Ben White (£5.5m) and Cristhian Mosquera (£5.5m) in their place in the Community Shield.

This is the defensive line-up that was sent out in Cardiff…

White, Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m) played the full 90 minutes. Calafiori was subbed off for Piero Hincapie (£5.5m) on the hour mark.

As for total pre-season minutes, no Arsenal defender was involved more than Mosquera.

PlayerPricev MKD (Jul 25)v GIR (Aug 1)v BET (Aug 5)v DOR (Aug 9)v COM (Aug 12)v MCI (Aug 16)Total
Mosquera£5.5m456145784590364
Calafiori£5.5m456162602960317
White£5.5m06145782890302
Gabriel£8.0m0031604590226
Hincapie£5.5m03245306130198

It does sound like Arsenal will bring in defensive cover for Saliba before the end of the month, with Ezri Konsa (£4.5m) and Jarrell Quansah both linked.

However, White and Mosquera are devoid of any real competition for now, so here are the options to consider at the back.

ARSENAL’S DEFENSIVE OPTIONS

just watched the liverpool v como highlights, there was a little passage where the ball was pulled into the box and wirtx cushioned it nicely into Isak's path for a shot, it didn't come off because it seemed Isak was only semi-expecting Wirtz to be able to pull it off, but as the camera cuts away you can see Isak's face looking over like 'wow, if I move with the expectation of pulling the trigger, this guy will find a plate to put it on for me'

if ever i'm looking for some ridiculous insights to justify my more hopeful picks, this is what I like to see, i'm hoping Wirtz will thrive in the Iraola chaos with a killer up front

Had Werner twice that season, in his first game blank away at West Brom, second time I had him - hat trick.

Fond memories of a player many fpl managers hated lol

Keep seeing this argument "Will you feel good when hes owned by 75% and they cap him??"..

You can apply this argument to every single player in the game. Its irrelevant - you either think a player is a good pick or you dont. If you dont, their ownership has no relevance. Unless you are playing some kind of weird version of the game where your goal isnt to maximise points, but to minimise the chance of feeling bad in a single game week in case that player hauls.

Im not surprised people blindly follow the words of content creators if this is the level of logical thought they have if left to themselves.

Well - a 15m+ priced player has never been an optimal pick in fpl in its history….14.5 and lower yes so it could well be the time to look elsewhere

With Bruno perma captain you’d think you’d make up the points and way more with the minimum 6.5 you’d save going say Isak

Not really who else is 75% owned anyway?! Just Haaland. Its the one guy who can damage you the most by far if he does well

I think ownership is the wrong way of looking at it - if you want to win it you have to play the game like you are the only player and to get as maximum points as possible.

Latter point being the whole thing the game revolves around - points, if you feel you can invest 6.5m+ to return more points and captain Bruno for example then I can definitely see it.

Ownership arguments is the pragmatic negative way of analysing the game.

I see your point, but you can genuinely wreck your season — and your sanity — if a player with 75% ownership goes off. Take Haaland in 24-25, for example: 9 goals in his first 4 games, plus assists and bonus points on top. My season was in ruins after those 4 gameweeks.

So what, it’s a game - I’ll say one thing, you’d have much more chance of winning the whole thing if it going without the most owned player pays off vs if you just get him anyway and he does fire.

Plus yes that 75% (say 150% EO) standalone has then scored X more points than teams without Haaland on AVERAGE.

But if you have reinvested that saving more wisely than the average who also don’t Haaland then that gap is much smaller to you individually.

Ownership arguements are just facts. If halaand gets his usual gameweek 1 brace… you’ll be annoyed. Whether it’s very annoyed or just slightly, you will be.

If he gets a brace, yes you could potentially still do good with the money spent elsewhere, but it will at least minimise any gains

If Isak also braces and I go without I’ll be pleased, since very little if any Haaland owners will have Isak.

            He’s massively overlooked.

With keeper a mimimum of 8.5
Then factor in Haaland and Bruno price and base price of the other outfield players 83 mil is gone
Even if you leave a few player at base price you are still not left with much more that 2 mil per player above base price for the others in the first 11. Even with captaincy factored in surely this can’t be the way to play the game season long.

Barca's central midfield is way too bloated now. Rodri, De Jong, Pedri, Gavi, Casado, Bernal, Olmo, Lopez.

There have been links to Gavi. Probably makes more sense than Pedri.

MU's central midfield looks to be short one player no?

        Santos, Tielemans, Mainoo, Bruno, Mount.

The quality looks fine to me, Carrick seems to want a more technical profile with insisive passes through the lines. Defense through possession. Just short one body.

Bruno and Isak for GWs 1+2
Then use 2 transfers to go to Haaland, Schade (or other 6.0m mid, 6.5 if I go Shaw over Maguire)?
I have Semenyo in team "as cover", if you can call it that

You can then afford to start with Palmer already and be ahead of the curve for GW4

I dont really love the Palmer pick if im honest, id rather see how Rogers does and possibly downgrade Semenyo to him gw4

Fair that’s the beauty of no Haaland can afford to go Palmer as funds not an issue

Trying to find a balance here, any thoughts appreciated:

    Kinsky (dubs)
    Cala - Maguire - Jacquet (fodder1, fodder 2)
Bruno F, Mbeumo, Tzolis, Schade (fodder3)
    Thiago, Haaland, Pedro

Two things,1) would you move Thiago, Schade, Maguire to DCL, Semenyo, 4.5 def, 2) is it really ok to have fodder on the bench

A bit top heavy so yes, DCL and strengthen elsewhere.

Yeah I know, would help with the bench to have those extra 2mill. I just have this feeling about Brentford this season, they have appealing options and I feel like very few are considering them other than Sangare and Ajer (who I do also like). This is classic gut versus brain conundrum!

Schade, better fixtures and better attack at Brentford

Brentford will qualify for Europe this season I think. It's been a long time coming.

I really like the team they've built.

    Talk me out of this

    Lammens
    Calafiori / Mosquera / White
    Bruno (C) / Mbeumo / Semenyo / Wirtz / Szoboszlai
    Isak / Joao Pedro

Kinski / DCL / Hume / Van Ewjk

Triple Liv attack and Ars defence does seem a little overkill…

Where’d the money go? Unproven Wirtz and hyped “loads of routes to points” Szobo? And DCL on the bench. If gonna go against logic and risk no Haaland ( best scorer in the game ) … get some proven players.

    Is that defence too weak/risky?

    raya (4)
    jacquet muramovic vuskovic (4 4) ?

Jacquet will face competition from Araujo at CB, so maybe wait for more info there. Rest looks okay.

    Thoughts on this lot?

    Kinsky
    Calafiori - Mosquera - Maguire
    Bruno - Mbuemo - Szob - Tzolis
    Haaland - JP - DCL

    Dubravka - Rodon - Slater - Diop

Purely because of the fixture. Do I go
Havertz or gyokeres or just stick with Isak?

Isak will be in for gameweek 2 for Havertz or gykores if I go for an Arsenal striker.

Have to have Isak for GW1 no? Newcastle look depleted and he will want to do some damage against his former club.

Am I going mad with this? I know Gvardiol and Semenyo aren’t going to offset the risk of going no Haal but they do make me feel a little better…

    Verbruggen
    Gabriel, Gvardiol, Calafiori
    Bruno, Semenyo, Mbeumo, Tzolis
    Isak, Pedro, DCL

    BB1: Kinsky, Schade, Shaw, Diop
