Captain Sensible

With the Gameweek 1 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just hours away, it’s time to have a good think about who to captain.

Most FPL managers face a tough decision between the two highest-scoring players in 2025/26, Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) – but those two aren’t the only candidates for the armband.

On the opening weekend, Manchester United travel to Hull City, while Manchester City host Bournemouth. Defending champions Arsenal enjoy an appealing home fixture against Coventry City, while Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea will fancy their chances away at Fulham.

So, following City’s disappointing performance in last Sunday’s Community Shield, is it time to look away from Haaland and target the newly promoted Tigers, or do we even look outside of Manchester?

That’s what we’re considering in the first ‘Captain Sensible’ article of the season.

In this piece, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Captaincy Poll

In stark contrast to the majority of Gameweeks last season, there is a genuine contest at the top of the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll. Haaland currently sits in first place on around 34% of the vote, while Bruno Fernandes boasts the backing of 27% of site users.

In third place is Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) with just over 10% of the vote share. The Cameroon international has been in fine form during pre-season, scoring three goals and featuring regularly up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko (£7.0m).

Elsewhere, two other players have managed to garner more than 5% support: Community Shield bandwagon Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m). The former has seen his ownership increase significantly since Sunday.

    Thoughts on this GW1 BB?

    Kinsky
    Calafiori - Muharemovic - Maguire
Bruno - Mbuemo - Tzolis - Le Fee
    Haaland - JP - DCL

    Verbruggen - Gross - Ajaer - Diop

Apart from defence we are exactly the same except for you gone for Tzolis and I am on Wirtz, maybe I am going a bit heavy there considering its leaving me 23mil in defence, but I def like the rest of it!

Why is there no love for Robertson here at 4.5M? Trying to work out my defence for an early BB have Shaw/Hume/Muharemovic/Mitchell and Robertson, maybe leaving myself a bit light in defence with only 23Mil to spend

    1. Udogie will share minutes. The big question is in what ratio.

  3. The Konsa problem with GW1 bench boost teams. Everyone is going to being transferring in the £4.5m Arsenal defender if he starts GW2. Probably as sure to rise at least £0.5m over the next few weeks as anyone ever before GW1. However, he won't start GW1 so can't start in a bench boost team. Feels almost like a pre-booked transfer Hume (or whoever) to Konsa which I don't like.

I dont think it's as big a deal as that. You might get him at 4.8 but that's still excellent value. I honestly still think unlikley to start GW2 as well

    BB1

    Lammens,
    Gabriel, Cala, Tarkowski,
    Wirtz, Semenyo, Bruno, Tzolis
    Isak, Pedro, DCL

    Verbruggen, Sangare, Canvot, Diop

Plan to FH3 and leave wildcard for the long term. Only really unsure about Canvot so any 5m alternatives that have a good fixture in 3 are welcome.

    Folks

    Thiago vs Tottenham
    Or
    Isak vs Brentford

GW1 only - Bench Boosting and will wildcard early on in any case.

    1. No need for either if wildcarding early. Isak is a gw1-4 play.

If one week only id be on Havertz over both

All set here, tweaked my captain, going Calafiori. Have looked at his entire stats at Arsenal, he basically has never been taken off just before the 60min mark in the PL. 22 starts and twice taken off in hard games away from home at 45min, usually when on yellow (Chelsea away). His only other 45min change was last game of season where the entire team was rotated and he was coming back from injury.

People have been wrongly saying he is a pre 60min sub risk. Also having looked at Hull they have been extremely robust at not conceeding many goals at home, many games with 0, 1 goals max. United I expect to win but it will be a hard game for Bruno to Haul as Hull will dig in , play 5 at the back and bus park, I can see his role being alot of creative type crosses and balls into the box with Hull heading them away, not alot of space.

Going to go with high upside Calafiori and expect a 70 -75min sub.

    BB1 : Lammens Verb
O reilly Calafiori (c) White Palestra De Cuper
Bruno (V) mBuemo Foden Rogers Tzolis
    Isak Barry Pedro

    FH3 is the plan.

    Good luck all!

I rate the differential thinking but it is massively risky.

On Hull, their XGC in the championship was like 80 last year. It's hard to see them doing well, and promoted teams also usually struggle right out of the blocks

I did MGW and Wissa to Sesko and Gakpo.

    Bench is Jacquet Sesko Konsa.

Trying to think long term and I'm kinda not sure if Liverpool are gonna land Barcola, which makes Gakpo the best Liverpool attacker to own in my eyes.

Sesko I think is gonna do really well, but that's a feeling. I think Wissa n MGW are gonna be fine too.

Would wait with Šeško tbh, unless you can bench GW1, will probably get 20min max. Not even sure he starts GW2.

I think it will be Gyok, they tend to play him against worse sides and Havertz against better sides

Would you go vanHecke or Vuskovic on a GW1 bench boost to carry into longterm.

I'm on Kinsky/Verbruggen so it's really which defense would you double up on.
