Captain Sensible

With the Gameweek 1 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just hours away, it’s time to have a good think about who to captain.

Most FPL managers face a tough decision between the two highest-scoring players in 2025/26, Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) – but those two aren’t the only candidates for the armband.

On the opening weekend, Manchester United travel to Hull City, while Manchester City host Bournemouth. Defending champions Arsenal enjoy an appealing home fixture against Coventry City, while Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea will fancy their chances away at Fulham.

So, following City’s disappointing performance in last Sunday’s Community Shield, is it time to look away from Haaland and target the newly promoted Tigers, or do we even look outside of Manchester?

That’s what we’re considering in the first ‘Captain Sensible’ article of the season.

In this piece, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Captaincy Poll

In stark contrast to the majority of Gameweeks last season, there is a genuine contest at the top of the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll. Haaland currently sits in first place on around 34% of the vote, while Bruno Fernandes boasts the backing of 27% of site users.

In third place is Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) with just over 10% of the vote share. The Cameroon international has been in fine form during pre-season, scoring three goals and featuring regularly up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko (£7.0m).

Elsewhere, two other players have managed to garner more than 5% support: Community Shield bandwagon Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m). The former has seen his ownership increase significantly since Sunday.

Morning all. Almost there! Some last decisions to make:

    A. Maguire + Rodon or
    B. Shaw + Muharemović

Hoping for a bit of a consensus on my final BB decision, which comes down to if it's worth downgrading Wirtz to upgrade DEF, if I do though it ends up being just so dam template:

    a) O'Nien + Shaw + Wirtz
    b) Hume + Maguire + Ndiaye (+0.5)

Worth finding the extra 0.5 to upgrade Gross to Ndiaye? Planning on WC in GW3 so will just be a short term thing.

I'm unsure (as a Leeds fan) why people think Rodon will be a better option than Muha. Muha will be a defcon monster for us this season - and although Rodon has seemingly been given a White style marauding CB in pre-season, I think he'll be reigned in for the EPL season. Plus, in pre-season - Muha scored one, Rodon assisted one.Rodon usually tends to miss his goal scoring opportunities when going up for set pieces. I would argue Muha was more effective at set pieces, plus with the defcons, a better pick. Just my thoughts though as a Leeds fan.

      Here!

I don't understand the pressure to play the BB so early at all. It's definitely a valuable chip if used correctly with more information. The first half of the season is long, and there will certainly be better opportunities for it than in the first two gameweeks, when a lot is still very uncertain. Aside from that, I don't see the appeal of a few 4.0 defenders from promoted teams at all...

Fair enough. Thats how I viewed it last season. I’m going for BBGw2 this season. Watch a lot of the Championship so Coventry’s game against Hull is a rare opportunity where you can have a fully playing bench with points potential at a minimal cost, still allowing you to spend most of your money on the starting team. I think your points apply to BBGW1 though - funds spread too thinly for my liking

    2. Red Nosed Reijnders

Me, though I considered week 2. But if Haaland or Fernandes pick up an injury anytime in the first 19 weeks can spread the money without missing out and get a much better bench boost.

            • 13 Years

Tbh I have made peace with the fact that there is no clear path back - it will be FH3 or WC3 if Haaland is a must. Or just carry on rolling without him if Maresca city arent firing

            1. Milner4eva
              • 13 Years
              just now

But I am not going without Haaland just for the BB. That’s just incidental, as it kinda automatically makes your squad strong not having Haaland and I want rid of the BB as it’s just really not a strong chip

Both get 80+ minutes. Weird question.

Because of price, unless you're GW2 WC'ing, you're picking them for minimum 1st 2 games but more likely until you WC. Think more long term than this GW.

I'm contemplating on who to captain, under the article about who to captain. Sorry I should have made that clearer.

Just looking for something to tilt the balance.

Haaland's entire pre-season has been 52 minutes. Would it be that crazy to see 75 mins?

Haaland was playing World Cup just a few weeks ago, he is fit. He knows his role. He will play the whole match unless City are well up, which means he probably hauled anyway.
