Captain Sensible

With the Gameweek 1 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just hours away, it’s time to have a good think about who to captain.

Most FPL managers face a tough decision between the two highest-scoring players in 2025/26, Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) – but those two aren’t the only candidates for the armband.

On the opening weekend, Manchester United travel to Hull City, while Manchester City host Bournemouth. Defending champions Arsenal enjoy an appealing home fixture against Coventry City, while Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea will fancy their chances away at Fulham.

So, following City’s disappointing performance in last Sunday’s Community Shield, is it time to look away from Haaland and target the newly promoted Tigers, or do we even look outside of Manchester?

That’s what we’re considering in the first ‘Captain Sensible’ article of the season.

In this piece, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Captaincy Poll

In stark contrast to the majority of Gameweeks last season, there is a genuine contest at the top of the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll. Haaland currently sits in first place on around 34% of the vote, while Bruno Fernandes boasts the backing of 27% of site users.

In third place is Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) with just over 10% of the vote share. The Cameroon international has been in fine form during pre-season, scoring three goals and featuring regularly up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko (£7.0m).

Elsewhere, two other players have managed to garner more than 5% support: Community Shield bandwagon Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m). The former has seen his ownership increase significantly since Sunday.

    Thoughts on this GW1 BB?

    Kinsky
    Calafiori - Muharemovic - Maguire
Bruno - Mbuemo - Tzolis - Le Fee
    Haaland - JP - DCL

    Verbruggen - Gross - Ajaer - Diop

Apart from defence we are exactly the same except for you gone for Tzolis and I am on Wirtz, maybe I am going a bit heavy there considering its leaving me 23mil in defence, but I def like the rest of it!

I think Tzolis will end up being a significantly more value pick for the season

Hard to argue with this team, one of the strongest i have seen. Only dont really like Le Fee as i think you are booking an early transfer there and I just dont like Sunderland's stats

Why is there no love for Robertson here at 4.5M? Trying to work out my defence for an early BB have Shaw/Hume/Muharemovic/Mitchell and Robertson, maybe leaving myself a bit light in defence with only 23Mil to spend

The Konsa problem with GW1 bench boost teams. Everyone is going to being transferring in the £4.5m Arsenal defender if he starts GW2. Probably as sure to rise at least £0.5m over the next few weeks as anyone ever before GW1. However, he won't start GW1 so can't start in a bench boost team. Feels almost like a pre-booked transfer Hume (or whoever) to Konsa which I don't like.

I dont think it's as big a deal as that. You might get him at 4.8 but that's still excellent value. I honestly still think unlikley to start GW2 as well

Toying between switching to BB2 or given the risk he doesn't start then ditching early BB and going for a value maximisation strategy with Konsa on the bench.

    BB1

    Lammens,
    Gabriel, Cala, Tarkowski,
    Wirtz, Semenyo, Bruno, Tzolis
    Isak, Pedro, DCL

    Verbruggen, Sangare, Canvot, Diop

Plan to FH3 and leave wildcard for the long term. Only really unsure about Canvot so any 5m alternatives that have a good fixture in 3 are welcome.

    1. You don't need wirtz imo if you have isak, I'd spread that money,

    Thiago vs Tottenham
    Or
    Isak vs Brentford

GW1 only - Bench Boosting and will wildcard early on in any case.

No need for either if wildcarding early. Isak is a gw1-4 play.

If one week only id be on Havertz over both

All set here, tweaked my captain, going Calafiori. Have looked at his entire stats at Arsenal, he basically has never been taken off just before the 60min mark in the PL. 22 starts and twice taken off in hard games away from home at 45min, usually when on yellow (Chelsea away). His only other 45min change was last game of season where the entire team was rotated and he was coming back from injury.

People have been wrongly saying he is a pre 60min sub risk. Also having looked at Hull they have been extremely robust at not conceeding many goals at home, many games with 0, 1 goals max. United I expect to win but it will be a hard game for Bruno to Haul as Hull will dig in , play 5 at the back and bus park, I can see his role being alot of creative type crosses and balls into the box with Hull heading them away, not alot of space.

Going to go with high upside Calafiori and expect a 70 -75min sub.

    BB1 : Lammens Verb
O reilly Calafiori (c) White Palestra De Cuper
Bruno (V) mBuemo Foden Rogers Tzolis
    Isak Barry Pedro

    FH3 is the plan.

    Good luck all!

I rate the differential thinking but it is massively risky.

On Hull, their XGC in the championship was like 80 last year. It's hard to see them doing well, and promoted teams also usually struggle right out of the blocks

      1. I expect Hull to be relegated and bottom. However week 1 at home, extremely pragmatic coach who seems well able to organise a defence into a deep block 5 and 4 in front. Plus all the comments during the week mocking them in the media. I see them doing a decent job to hold United out for a longtime. United front 6 besides Bruno is not super creative. Amad. Dorgu, Mbuemo will not thrive without space, United will eventually wear them down - can see a set piece being the key, but it doesnt inspire me for a Bruno haul potentially.

Coventry are also a team who do play somewhat out and dont sit deep. It maybe so that Hull will lose most games but wont give the 3-4 goal hauls that Coventry do. Burnely last year despite relegation were decent in the early games at home (Liverpool barely beat them).

    2. TheTinman
      • 11 Years

Huge upside Califiori, who had 13pts GW1 and GW2, then never double digits again. His next highest score was 8, which he got once. Then after that he is capped at 6pts.

It is not risky, it is simply a bad play. Only risk is if it is bad or really bad

      1. FPL_trail_runner

Its a one week play, his postioning in pre season this year is literally in the box most of the time. For one week at home to Coventry it has high potential.

Also, with Bruno G in the team it looks (early doors yet) that Arsenal are more willing to allow him way more freedom, due to the higher midfield control than last year and he could potentially exploit this. He didnt just score last weekend, he was in the 6 yard box multiple other times and had another shot just over.

Its my own interpretation where I dont feel super high on United away to Hull.

        1. TheTinman

          Bruno G is injured.

He was up high and in the box loads last season too, but didn't convert them to points.

          1. lets agree to disagree.

I did MGW and Wissa to Sesko and Gakpo.

    Bench is Jacquet Sesko Konsa.

Trying to think long term and I'm kinda not sure if Liverpool are gonna land Barcola, which makes Gakpo the best Liverpool attacker to own in my eyes.

Sesko I think is gonna do really well, but that's a feeling. I think Wissa n MGW are gonna be fine too.

He may well do very well, a this stage on BB its all about the extra money and how that can cover or potential exceed him. He will be great and probably highest scoring defender, you just cant judge him or any player in isolation like that given the player pool and prices.

I'm comfortable with Greaves and Thomas, due to DCs and expected starts

Not really looking anywhere else for now

Hard to back promoted attacking full backs, because you'd need the promoted team to score often enough for that to beat DCs

      1. TheTinman

I'd be looking at CBs over full backs. Likely more DC and more likely to score from corners. Newly promoted teams don't usually have many attacks, so attacking contributions from full backs are minimal.
