Captain Sensible

With the Gameweek 1 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just hours away, it’s time to have a good think about who to captain.

Most FPL managers face a tough decision between the two highest-scoring players in 2025/26, Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) – but those two aren’t the only candidates for the armband.

On the opening weekend, Manchester United travel to Hull City, while Manchester City host Bournemouth. Defending champions Arsenal enjoy an appealing home fixture against Coventry City, while Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea will fancy their chances away at Fulham.

So, following City’s disappointing performance in last Sunday’s Community Shield, is it time to look away from Haaland and target the newly promoted Tigers, or do we even look outside of Manchester?

That’s what we’re considering in the first ‘Captain Sensible’ article of the season.

In this piece, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Captaincy Poll

In stark contrast to the majority of Gameweeks last season, there is a genuine contest at the top of the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll. Haaland currently sits in first place on around 34% of the vote, while Bruno Fernandes boasts the backing of 27% of site users.

In third place is Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) with just over 10% of the vote share. The Cameroon international has been in fine form during pre-season, scoring three goals and featuring regularly up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko (£7.0m).

Elsewhere, two other players have managed to garner more than 5% support: Community Shield bandwagon Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m). The former has seen his ownership increase significantly since Sunday.

B with Sangare if he's your cheapest mid. Take it that's Brentfords Sangare?

Is Hume actually a fairly nailed on pick for Sunderland or did he only start so many games last season due to injuries? He seems to play so many positions.

Started 34 games last year so he's pretty nailed I'd say. I only plan on keeping him until Konsa is up and running anyway.

Haven't logged into my account for a few years. Think last season I played was maybe 22/23 season. Don't think I ever deleted the account, but website is claiming it doesn't exist? Do they cull inactive accounts after a period of time?

    Best 5.0m defender?

I have Maguire and have one more slot to fill.

    A) Muharemovic
    B) Vuskovic
    C) Jacquet
    D) Colwill
    E) Williams
    F) Ballard

I'm kind of okay with any of them... Vuskovic's defcon numbers are the best based on last season's numbers abnroad. But I'm on Jacquet right now because Iraola CBs get defcons and he got 9 in 45 mins in the last friendly.

Jacquet, imo. But unfortunately he is not 100% ready yet and a risk to start vs NEW.

I'm on vanHecke right now but might swap to Jaquet or Vuskovic.

Spurs have had a better xGC since DeZerbi came in and he played under him at Brighton.

Heart says Vuskovic though. Just that he played last night is putting me off.

I was disappointed by Brighton defensively yesterday and the fact they played before GW1 means they're more tired than Villa probably. Then a tough game in GW2. I feel like if I go Vuskovic it's a pretty long term outlook and my team is currently not super oriented towards that.

"Iraola CBs" - he's managing Liverpool now, not Bournemouth

True but if he sticks and moulds Liverpool to his style, the CBs have more sweeping up to do than defensive mids. It is kind of relevant. Senesi, and the year before him Huijsen were putting up the best defcon numbers in the league.

Getting really cold feet on De Cuyper. Just read the match report from Tromso last night and apparently Osman was the best player on the pitch at LW. He was subbed off at 77 mins for De Cuyper which is giving me pause to think that maybe Osman will start on Sunday as first choice LW.

Can any Brighton fans help? What’s the deal?

FPL Tom starting 5-3-2 is very different.
I like the look of 5-2-3 'mullet' to be honest but the sub mids are poor.

    Lammens
    Gabriel - VVD - Calafiori - Maguire - Muharemic/Vuskovic
    Mbeumo - Tzollis
Haaland - Isak - Joao Pedro
    (4.0 - 5.0 - 5.0 - 4.5)

    Madness or Genius?
