Captain Sensible

With the Gameweek 1 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just hours away, it’s time to have a good think about who to captain.

Most FPL managers face a tough decision between the two highest-scoring players in 2025/26, Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) – but those two aren’t the only candidates for the armband.

On the opening weekend, Manchester United travel to Hull City, while Manchester City host Bournemouth. Defending champions Arsenal enjoy an appealing home fixture against Coventry City, while Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea will fancy their chances away at Fulham.

So, following City’s disappointing performance in last Sunday’s Community Shield, is it time to look away from Haaland and target the newly promoted Tigers, or do we even look outside of Manchester?

That’s what we’re considering in the first ‘Captain Sensible’ article of the season.

In this piece, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Captaincy Poll

In stark contrast to the majority of Gameweeks last season, there is a genuine contest at the top of the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll. Haaland currently sits in first place on around 34% of the vote, while Bruno Fernandes boasts the backing of 27% of site users.

In third place is Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) with just over 10% of the vote share. The Cameroon international has been in fine form during pre-season, scoring three goals and featuring regularly up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko (£7.0m).

Elsewhere, two other players have managed to garner more than 5% support: Community Shield bandwagon Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m). The former has seen his ownership increase significantly since Sunday.

This is my squad with £1m ITB, what would you change?

    Steele, Pickford.
    Calafiori, Mitchell, Gvardiol, Aina, Mukiele.
    Sarr, Ndiaye, Semenyo, B.Fernandes, Mbeumo.
    Havertz, Thiago, João Pedro

Havertz / Thiago to Isak must be tempting and get Tzolis / Schade instead?

Yeah, on the same boat. It's between him and Szobo. Szobo is such a boring pick, he'll tickle along nicely, and probably outscore Wirtz over the season. My only hope is that Iraola can turn Wirtz into a great fantasy asset, like he did with Semenyo.

Panis setting in now. Been on Team B for the last 48 hours but I now want to go BB GW 1.

    Team A - BB 1 WC 3

    Lammens - Pickford
Calafiori - White - Palestra - Ballard - De Cuyper
    Bruno - Mbeumo - Semenyo - Tzolis - Ndiaye
    Isak - Pedro - Brobbey

Team B - Long term team no chips planned

    Kinsky
    Calafiori - Shaw - Mykolenko
    Bruno - Mbeumo - Tzolis - Gross
    Haaland - Isak - Pedro

    Dubravka - Rodon - Slater - Thomas

    Team A or Team B?

Chances of that are pretty low.

        Haaland hatty (34 points) + Gross + Kinsky + Mykolenko + Shaw vs Bruno + Brobbey + Semenyo + Ndiaye + White + Palestra + De Cuyper + Pickford + Lammens + Ballard

Still Team A scores more I feel

yeah depends on the new striker spurs will get. brobbey surely the safer pick and better fixtures. MGW i like, but he's unfortunately too expensive to fit in. going for ndoye probably instead of igor jesus

    Newcastle & Villa massive sell-off

    Spurs buying anything

    Chelsea buying anything (over 35)

    Man City selling anything

Man Utd buying usually (for past 13 years) mediocre things

Arsenal seems to have had a good transfer window

Should I do BB GW1 with this bench, keep it for later or make any changes?

    Kinsky, Hume, DCL, Rodon

    Starting 11 right now:
    Verbruggen
    Calafiori, O'Reilly, Maguire
    Bruno, Mbuemo, Semenyo, Wirtz, Tzolis
    Isak, Pedro

With Konsa joining Arsenal is anyone nailed to start at least the first 2 gw? Calafiori or White?
O'Reilly worth 6.5 or maybe doing Palestri instead?

    Raya (Verbruggen)
    Calafiori Maguire Ayer (Hume Muharemovic)
