With a huge 814,606 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers using their Bench Boost in Gameweek 1, and lots planning a Gameweek 2 activation, there is particular interest in each position’s cheapest starters.

Here, we’ll look through the opening weekend’s lowest-priced individuals, likely unaffected by tonight’s Fulham v Chelsea clash.

£4.0M DEFENDERS

Who were the cheapest starting players in FPL Gameweek 1? 6

No £4.0m goalkeepers took part in Gameweek 1, unlike Martin Dubravka last year, so it’s straight onto defenders.

Each of Hull City’s back five kept a clean sheet against Manchester United, while Nobel Mendy and Semi Ajayi added a goal on top of it. But four of the five had to withdraw because of injury. Let’s see if Tuesday’s EFL Cup clash gives any clues on availability for their trip to Coventry City.

The Sky Blues lost to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. However, centre-back Bobby Thomas just about reached the defensive contributions (DefCon) threshold, as Ipswich Town captain Dara O’Shea did versus Sunderland.

Facing him, Luke O’Nien was the only non-promoted £4.0m defender to appear. But that seemed to be a one-off occasion due to Nordi Mukiele (£5.5m) and Omar Alderete‘s (£5.0m) fitness issues.

All hopes that a strong performance would keep him starting were likely dashed by a bunch of costly errors.

Off the bench came one-point cameos for Ipswich’s Abdoul Ouattara and Hull’s Cody Drameh, Paddy McNair, Matt Targett and Lucas Herrington.

£4.5M MIDFIELDERS

Who were the cheapest starting players in FPL Gameweek 1? 7

In midfield, the star of these five was Regan Slater, whose free-kick assisted Mendy. Post-match comments from his boss will encourage the FPL community.

“When I arrived here, Regan Slater was not a first-team player. I think he came on against Preston at home at half-time. He completely turned the game, and since then, he’s been a first XI player. He’s my first choice, always, and I like him a lot because every training session and every game, he’s 100 per cent.” – Sergej Jakirovic

Expect him and Matt Crooks to start in the short-to-medium term, and hopefully much longer in Slater’s case.

But it’s a guessing game for Aston Villa’s George Hemmings. He netted twice in a promising summer, but Unai Emery’s side were thrashed 4-0 at Brighton and Hove Albion. Throw in a few more incoming transfers, and it’s hard to say what the resulting shake-up does to Hemmings.

As for 11.7%-owned Will Hughes, he was an unused Crystal Palace substitute.

Notable £5.0m starters were goal scorers Vitaly Janelt and Nilson Angulo, plus assisters Diego Gomez, Sasa Lukic and Harrison Armstrong.

£4.5M + £5.0M FORWARDS

Who were the cheapest starting players in FPL Gameweek 1? 8

Up front, Ipswich’s Sindre Walle Egeli was the sole £4.5m option to appear, coming on in the 80th minute.

The arrival of Julio Enciso (£5.5m), plus the return to fitness of Abdul Fatawu (£5.0m), are a hammer blow to him. He should still hopefully get minutes, however.

At the £5.0m price point, only Coventry duo Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante started, but Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.5m) looked lively upon his introduction, causing problems for defenders. It surely won’t be long until he’s challenging for a place in Frank Lampard’s lineup.

As for the other £5.5m options, it was a bit of a red-letter weekend. There were five starters, and four of them, Thierno Barry, Georginio Rutter, Emersonn and Oli McBurnie, delivered attacking returns. The other, Crystal Palace’s Eddie Nketiah, has the highest xGI of any forward in Gameweek 1 so far!

I didn't watch that match but it sounded drab.

If Forest don't pick up, it'll be hard to remain patient with so much value in midfield to select from.

It's a keep for me but if Rogers stars well then it'll be an easy swap in the not too distant future.

I got him and I will give him one week more. They play Liverpool, who did not look solid when defending counterattack. After that I will reassess and probably move him or Mbeumo to one ManCity player.

    Hi Lads,
    Bottomed.

I have Sarr (CP) as my differential however it appears that he wants to enforce move to Galatasaray. Therefore, genuine question. Sell him or wait one week and play van Ewijk. And if sell who to buy instead:
    A)Sangare,
    B) Hinshelwood,
    C)Ndiaye,
    D)Wilson (Leeds),
    E)Stac

Someone made the point that bench boost just plays the worst performing players, so anything more than 1 per player is not too bad

ML rival had Muharemovic, Hinshelwood and Giles on his bench and didn’t play it, swings and roundabouts

      Would bench Semenyo personally

    4. I'd bench Thiago, personally, but it is a tough call. Leeds at home are a solid outfit and Thiago is maybe not all that core to what Brentford do. City didn't look good, but Semenyo is guaranteed minutes and palace did look poor.

Anyone else think the Sangare hype is getting a bit out of control?

He's this season's Elliott Anderson - will get you Defcons and chip in with the odd attacking return

I think the two assists on Saturday were a bit of an anomaly... He's never had more than 4 assists per season

All in all, a good pick but probably not worth using a transfer on at this stage imo

The first assist felt repeatable/encouraging - breaking forward from midfield, Kante esque

Anderson finished in the team of the year, if he’s that then Sangare is worth it. This guy’s legit

I’m guessing most are looking at him to move off a different 5.5 player (gross) before he gets too expensive to do in one move, or look to shift a different underperforming area (5.0 defender to 4.5, upgrading Gomez)

Excellent deep, where most of his work was and effective when he went forward.

Dream debut so unlikely replicable but a v strong squad option when transfers allow.

After a bad GW1 the best thing you can do is panic and bring in the players who scored points in GW1.

What's happened to the price changes tab on the FPL website? Seems to have disappeared.

      Still there

Is it worth doing Gross > Sangare now before any price changes?
Probably won't even play him next week but 0.0 ITB.

Fernandes -> Sangare is in my thoughts. I need the captaincy option Sangare provides

      I would

Sangare averages under 2 goals a season in the last 5 seasons in inferior leagues. I wouldn't be knee-jerking him in quite yet.

Transfer Vuskovic to De Cuper or save? Anyone else considering or waste of a transfer?

I wouldn't be making a defender transfer off the back of one GW's worth of data, least of all for one with a difficult fixture.

Save, last season de Cuyp 2goals + 1 assist, why would anything be different?

    Afternoon,

Having a pretty ropey GW1 like many others.

Assuming all are passed fit, does this look good enough for a GW2 BB?

    Kinsky
    Jacquet - Maguire - Calafiori
    Fernandes - Mbeumo - Szob - Tzolis
    DCL - Haaland - Pedro

    Verbrggen (CHE - a) / Slater (Cov - a) / Hume (FUL - h) / Thomas (HUL - h)

Not much better here (41) with just Pedro left.

Early days though, and loads played BB last week which pushed up the average score.

    Gabriel - Calafiori - Hume
    Bruno (C) - Palmer - Mbeumo - Ødegaard
    Thiago - Pedro

    Verbruggen - X - Rodon - De Cuyper

Yeah no point in making any transfers now, as we've planned for more than just GW1.
