At the time same that Fulham were holding Liverpool, Hull City were also playing coupon-busters at Stamford Bridge.

The Tigers’ scarcely believable unbeaten start to 2026/27 continued in west London as they deservedly took a point from free-scoring Chelsea.

Here are our Scout Notes from the game.

injury Mendy

CHELSEA ATTACK GOOD…

Sometimes, when Fantasy managers are considering triple-ups from a club, there’s a dilemma over which three players to pick. That’s far from the case at Chelsea at present.

Morgan Rogers (£7.7m), Cole Palmer (£9.7m) and Joao Pedro (£7.8m) continue to tick along nicely, even if Gameweek 3 wasn’t quite the points bonanza that the Hull fixture had promised to be – especially for Palmer captainers/Triple Captainers.

All three delivered attacking returns on Saturday. Pedro teed up Rogers to lash in Chelsea’s early opener, before Palmer crossed low for Pedro for a blushes-sparing second-half leveller.

In the end, they did well to get eight, five and 12 points from this contest. Apart from a late chance when Palmer set up Rogers, ‘JP Morgan’ didn’t get too many other sights of goal. Pedro’s goal and assist came from his only shot and key pass of the match, indeed.

Above: Players sorted by expected goal involvement (xGI) in Chelsae v Hull

… BUT DEFENCE NOT SO MUCH

While the front three have combined for 14 attacking returns in just four Gameweeks, the defence continues to flounder.

Hull, remarkably, outdid their hosts for xG on Saturday. Comfortably, too. That’s the first time the Tigers have managed that in a Premier League match this season.

“Overall, I think that we are attacking better than defending, in every part. We know that it’s a big topic and a big theme for us. For sure, it’s just four games, but the dynamic in terms of conceding, I don’t like it, and we need to do much better. Open play, set-pieces, long balls, this toughness, this competitive sense; we can do better.” – Xabi Alonso

Is the chopping and changing hindering things?

After the benching of Maxence Lacroix (£6.0m) on Saturday, only one Chelsea defender, Jorell Hato (£4.5m), has started all four league matches in 2026/27 – and even he was hooked at half-time against Hull after a horror show of a first half.

It’s not just personnel, but shape, too. Alonso switched to a 4-2-3-1 here (a formation we’d seen in pre-season), and Chelsea were ragged. Hull had twice the number of big chances (four) that Chelsea (two) did.

Above: Premier League teams sorted by big chances conceded (BC) after in Gameweeks 1-4 (following Saturday’s games)

If you own Kevin Schade (£6.0m) or Igor Thiago (£7.9m), you shouldn’t be too concerned about playing them in Gameweek 5.

NOTE QUITE LONDON 0-4 HULL, BUT ALMOST AS GOOD

The bookmaker-defying honeymoon period continues for Hull. Is this just the purple patch of a newly promoted team playing without the burden of expectation? Will they eventually regress to the mean? Probably yes on both accounts but one thing is for sure: they’re nowhere near as bad as they were meant to be.

They do have the advantage of having a hugely impressive manager in their corner, too. Sergej Jakirovic’s press conferences are great listens, from the tactical discussion to the dry wit.

They’d already proven themselves adept at the backs-to-the-wall stuff but we saw plenty of their fearless attacking ambition on Saturday.

After a tough opening half an hour in which Hull barely got a kick, Mohamed Belloumi‘s (£5.0m) thumping half-volley equaliser seemed to instil some belief into the visitors. Belloumi cutely set up Lewis Coyle (£4.0m) for a blocked effort before the Algerian winger added a deflected second, while Oli McBurnie (£5.5m) and sub Mohamed Ali-Cho (£5.0m) had huge chances saved in the second half. McBurnie would have made it 3-1, had he scored.

Look out Newcastle United, next weekend…

MENDY INJURY LATEST

Hull look set to travel to Tyneside without Nobel Mendy (£4.1m), however. The centre-half came off worse in a clash of heads with Pedro, and was subbed off after 58 minutes. He’s yet to make it past the 70-minute mark this season.

“Yeah, not good. I think we are thinking it’s a concussion. He went to the hospital and after head scan, we will know more, but it’s concussion 100%.

“Mendy will be out, 100%, so we need to find a new player.” – Sergej Jakirovic on Nobel Mendy

Lucas Herrington (£4.0m) is an impressive understudy, however, and should slot seamlessly in.

Elsewhere at the back, Semi Ajayi (£4.2m) hit the bar with a header and there was yet more DefCon joy for John Egan (£4.1m):

injury Mendy

Dirt-cheap midfielder Regan Slater (£4.5m) was only one contribution away from bagging DefCon points himself. This was the bargain-bin FPL asset’s fourth straight 90-minute outing.

    Absolutely excellent scout notes.

Will have to start watching Sergej Jakirovic’s press conferences - I had no idea they were so good.

James from FPL planet thought that Chelsea would change formation on CotC and play 4-2-3-1 and sure enough they did.

That goal that bounced over the Chelsea defenders head was criminal. Even in Sunday league football, "watching the bounce" is the most basic of errors not to make.

Anyone else starting to think the best Arsenal picks are triple defence? Their attack looks so dull and toothless to me. Cant see many games they get more than 2 goals and there will be at least 10 games they only score 1.

Yeah fair. Saka seems to be the one. He will only get sharper too.

Szobo was a strange pick for me that I never understood. Some good £6 and 6.5m options which will outscore him. His free kick returns last season was rare in football these days

Yep, and the concept there a lots of price changes in an international break is false as well. People still have the same amount of free transfers as any other week so will still be limited by that. Also WC transfers don't cause price changes so if many WC then there will be less price changes.

It have been better to just do Ajer to Konsa with no hit. Tzolis and Sangare have both been fine at their prices. Also, I'm not sure you'd still want Cherki if he were to be benched against United which could happen.

    Palmer, Wirtz*, Tzolis, Gross
    Haaland, Isak*, Palmer

Too soon to sell Isak I think. Wirtz should definitely go though. Not sure you need DCL, Mbeumo would be nice, but there are plenty of good mids to choose from.

Yeah, problem is only 7.5m for a straight Wirtz replacement, which rules out Rogers/Mbeumo in a straight swap.

I would hit the WC. I'm allergic to hits.

You can bring in the likes of Konsa, remove your Liverpool, and get yourself set for the season.

Yeah it's an option for sure.

I already have Konsa, but thinking Saka should be one of the ARS assets, which is easier with a WC. Wirtz definitely needs to go, and Isak soon.

          Oh yeah 😆

          Your plan is fine then.

I'm just averse to spending FTs to get closer to your ideal team, and then WCing to your ideal team. What were the FTs for then?

I'd rather just WC early and then refine it with the FTs.

I used 3FTs last week: Maguire, Ndiaye & Mbeumo -> Konsa, Palmer & fodder. Annoyingly I was strongly looking at losing Wirtz instead of Mbeumo and getting Davis instead of Konsa, which would have been MUCH better!

Wirtz is skill full but gets pushed about too easy, not getting the fk’s like last year as refs are letting the game flow.

I’ve got Szobo & considering moving on need constant points & 3’s not good enough for 7m

      Not into the Cherki pick.

Maresca likes his wingers to be wingers, so Cherki will mainly be competing with Foden & Enzo for the season. And Maresca was mad at Cherki for losing the ball last game before subbing him. He might not even start tonight.

I would also want more than one Arsenal defender. Throw Konsa in for sure.

All the other picks look fine. Belloumi is a fun punt.

After a decent start, I am having a terrible season and it is entirely my own fault.

I don't seem able to resist making loads of impulsive transfers and invariably, the guys I sell go on to perform well, with the ones i bring in dropping off.

If anyone likes a bet I would stick your money on Cherki and Hall getting returns. Sold them both (and Sangare who got 4pts with defcons) to accommodate Konsa, Ødegaard and Szoboszlai.

I need both Cherki and Hall to get 2pts to break even. I expect them both to comfortably outscore that.

Wish I could start this season again!

Havertz is decent enough, will get gials for sure although he us not prolific enough. Liverpool with other comp means they will struggle to replicate the intensity every 3/4 days hence as much as Isak is an amazing player, he might struggle getting chances like what happened yesterday against Fulham. I think either is ok but I will pass on both

  28. ZeBestee

Is it worth keeping Foden AND O'Reilly? Did a mistake going with both on WC. Is there a chance O'Reilly keeps his place in the starting 11? With Gvardiol, the midfield packed and even Ait Nouri playing well as a sub means its a waste of space keeping him?

    1. Mirror Man

He'll be a great pick next year when he signs for MUFC provided he can keep Shaw quiet.

Foden no. O Reilly yes. But depending on where he plays and whether he can displace Gvardiol at LB if hes moved out of midfield he might be a sell. Keep, dont buy for me with OReilly

Wildcard has essentially come down to this:
    A. Palmer + Mykolenko + Tavernier + 4.5 FWD
    B. Rogers + Tarkowski + Tavernier + 4.5 FWD
    C. Rogers + Mykolenko + Szoboszlai + Barry (Barry would be benched most weeks)

I think by just getting bench fodder, the starting XI is much stronger. Obviously injuries/benching may become a problem but could be sorted with FT?
