At the time same that Fulham were holding Liverpool, Hull City were also playing coupon-busters at Stamford Bridge.

The Tigers’ scarcely believable unbeaten start to 2026/27 continued in west London as they deservedly took a point from free-scoring Chelsea.

Here are our Scout Notes from the game.

CHELSEA ATTACK GOOD…

Sometimes, when Fantasy managers are considering triple-ups from a club, there’s a dilemma over which three players to pick. That’s far from the case at Chelsea at present.

Morgan Rogers (£7.7m), Cole Palmer (£9.7m) and Joao Pedro (£7.8m) continue to tick along nicely, even if Gameweek 3 wasn’t quite the points bonanza that the Hull fixture had promised to be – especially for Palmer captainers/Triple Captainers.

All three delivered attacking returns on Saturday. Pedro teed up Rogers to lash in Chelsea’s early opener, before Palmer crossed low for Pedro for a blushes-sparing second-half leveller.

In the end, they did well to get eight, five and 12 points from this contest. Apart from a late chance when Palmer set up Rogers, ‘JP Morgan’ didn’t get too many other sights of goal. Pedro’s goal and assist came from his only shot and key pass of the match, indeed.

Above: Players sorted by expected goal involvement (xGI) in Chelsae v Hull

… BUT DEFENCE NOT SO MUCH

While the front three have combined for 14 attacking returns in just four Gameweeks, the defence continues to flounder.

Hull, remarkably, outdid their hosts for xG on Saturday. Comfortably, too. That’s the first time the Tigers have managed that in a Premier League match this season.

“Overall, I think that we are attacking better than defending, in every part. We know that it’s a big topic and a big theme for us. For sure, it’s just four games, but the dynamic in terms of conceding, I don’t like it, and we need to do much better. Open play, set-pieces, long balls, this toughness, this competitive sense; we can do better.” – Xabi Alonso

Is the chopping and changing hindering things?

After the benching of Maxence Lacroix (£6.0m) on Saturday, only one Chelsea defender, Jorell Hato (£4.5m), has started all four league matches in 2026/27 – and even he was hooked at half-time against Hull after a horror show of a first half.

It’s not just personnel, but shape, too. Alonso switched to a 4-2-3-1 here (a formation we’d seen in pre-season), and Chelsea were ragged. Hull had twice the number of big chances (four) that Chelsea (two) did.

Above: Premier League teams sorted by big chances conceded (BC) after in Gameweeks 1-4 (following Saturday’s games)

If you own Kevin Schade (£6.0m) or Igor Thiago (£7.9m), you shouldn’t be too concerned about playing them in Gameweek 5.

NOTE QUITE LONDON 0-4 HULL, BUT ALMOST AS GOOD

The bookmaker-defying honeymoon period continues for Hull. Is this just the purple patch of a newly promoted team playing without the burden of expectation? Will they eventually regress to the mean? Probably yes on both accounts but one thing is for sure: they’re nowhere near as bad as they were meant to be.

They do have the advantage of having a hugely impressive manager in their corner, too. Sergej Jakirovic’s press conferences are great listens, from the tactical discussion to the dry wit.

They’d already proven themselves adept at the backs-to-the-wall stuff but we saw plenty of their fearless attacking ambition on Saturday.

After a tough opening half an hour in which Hull barely got a kick, Mohamed Belloumi‘s (£5.0m) thumping half-volley equaliser seemed to instil some belief into the visitors. Belloumi cutely set up Lewis Coyle (£4.0m) for a blocked effort before the Algerian winger added a deflected second, while Oli McBurnie (£5.5m) and sub Mohamed Ali-Cho (£5.0m) had huge chances saved in the second half. McBurnie would have made it 3-1, had he scored.

Look out Newcastle United, next weekend…

MENDY INJURY LATEST

Hull look set to travel to Tyneside without Nobel Mendy (£4.1m), however. The centre-half came off worse in a clash of heads with Pedro, and was subbed off after 58 minutes. He’s yet to make it past the 70-minute mark this season.

“Yeah, not good. I think we are thinking it’s a concussion. He went to the hospital and after head scan, we will know more, but it’s concussion 100%.

“Mendy will be out, 100%, so we need to find a new player.” – Sergej Jakirovic on Nobel Mendy

Lucas Herrington (£4.0m) is an impressive understudy, however, and should slot seamlessly in.

Elsewhere at the back, Semi Ajayi (£4.2m) hit the bar with a header and there was yet more DefCon joy for John Egan (£4.1m):

injury Mendy

Dirt-cheap midfielder Regan Slater (£4.5m) was only one contribution away from bagging DefCon points himself. This was the bargain-bin FPL asset’s fourth straight 90-minute outing.

    Bottomed:

Wildcard has essentially come down to this:
    A. Palmer + Mykolenko + Tavernier + 4.5 FWD
    B. Rogers + Tarkowski + Tavernier + 4.5 FWD
    C. Rogers + Mykolenko + Szoboszlai + Barry (Barry would be benched most weeks)

I think by just getting bench fodder, the starting XI is much stronger. Obviously injuries/benching may become a problem but could be sorted with FT?

I wouldn’t touch Chelsea defense, Munoz is unknown at Forest, Wissa could become a 4.5 to improve elsewhere unless you haven’t played Bench boost. I just dislike Enzo and loads more option around his price.

I wouldn't trust Chelsea defence and Enzo feels like he's going to be an assistant the assister type.

Give it one more game to properly assess Wissa. There’s a lot of talent on the bench at Newcastle, which makes their front 3 less assured for minutes. They also play Hull next, so from an attacking point of view it may seem like an easier match-up than it actually is.

Martinez is the worst pick you’ve got, however. Chelsea have a bad habit for collecting clean sheets and defending in general.

In a moment of anger/panic after watching Arsenal, being an owner of only Ben White, I used my 1FT on White to Tarkowski pre-price rise, with a view to using my WC. I'm now wondering whether it's the right time for the WC.

The defence (and Wirtz) is my main frustration.

    Verbeuggen/Kinsky
    Tarkowski/Ajer/Shaw/Diop/O'Nien
    Bruno/Rogers/Wirtz/Tzolis/Sangare

Mmm it feels like a wildcard could help you clean up a few issues here so I’d go for it.

I expect you’d change minimum: shaw, diop, o’nien, Wirtz, tzolis, and then likely do restructuring with some of the rest so I think that’s wildcard worthy

Yeah, my mindset always used to be to save a wildcard until my team was a catastrophe, or for double gameweeks, but I think the game has changed a lot since then!

One advice I see very often that I disagree 100% with is "too much funds in defense". Defenders are by far the best value in the game, so as long as you have 2-3 good captain options, money should go in defense. Its just mathematically sensible.

I have Gab/Cala/Gvard/Hall/De Cuyper and when I sell De Cuyper it will be for a

Might be clearer after the derby, but as someone who ditched Cherki last week, I just don't trust his minutes. I'd rather Rogers at this point (even though the triple up seems a lot with the away game). That or ditching Shaw.

My team feels like it’s just doing enough with FTs each gameweek to defer hitting the wildcard, but can’t escape that feeling I’m losing pace.

    Kinsky
    Gvardiol • Muharemovic • Calafiori
    Cherki • Palmer • Odegaard • Elanga
    Haaland • JP • DCL

I don’t want to go into Brentford away with triple Chelsea. That said, absolutely don’t mind playing him if there’s rotation elsewhere.

I like having the 7th attacker as a spot I can rotate in (Usually it’s Elanga on the bench).

        1. Doolittle
          • 14 Years

Yeah that's fair. I'm probably cautious (to a fault), so I'd be worried about Cherki coming on for 10-15 minutes vs an in-form Rogers 90 minutes, but I'm doing badly this season so probably wise to ignore!

          1. Not at all 🙂 The reason I posted was to get feedback from the likes of yourself, so thank you.

I’m naturally quite an aggressive manager with transfers and hits if necessary, which I tamed well last year and hoping to continue.

Cherki is definitely a closely watch with his minutes - maybe I bench him after the IB if he’s been busy with France.

Isn’t International break rotation a bit of a myth. You occasionally get one player from South America who plays Wednesday and misses a Saturday lunchtime game. But most will come back fit and ready. Injuries during IB are pretty manageable with transfers (date to get 2 in your squad ).

The 3 week IB is unprecedented but I don’t think the potential benefits supersedes keeping a ropey team for GW5. I’m seeing a little of horror defences getting rolled out before WC in 6.

They very much might, but as a Wirtz owner since the start, I've been edgy watching Szobozslai in Liverpool games. Probably not captured by the stats but because of his quality he looks really threatening when he has a chance (more so than Wirtz anyway).

True, somewhat has all the characteristics to match Bruno, but doesn’t do it in such volume. I felt he was their best player last season, who had to do occasional shift at right back. Glad that’s sorted with Araujo.

I wouldn’t get an attacker in a team managed by Moyes.

Was uncertain whether to free hit or wildcard. Did the former, and got in Raya, Saka and Gabriel for Calafiori and Ødegaard.

    Jammiest points ever!

For other game, would you prefer Gabriel for one year or Saliba for 2 years?

Gives you only half a year extra from Saliba really, which involves passes, interceptions, clean sheets, but not much in scoring. Go for Gabriel.

Every single GW I've had more points on my bench(more than 2 times twice) than the actual week I BBed. This game ffs.

Same. I guess the lesson is, don’t plan for 1st BB, just play it when opportunity arises

I think there’s very little you can do to avoid freak bench points when you’re picking good players (Schade, Davis etc)

Unless your bench players are the likes of Leif Davies then its a sign you have too much money tied up in rotation. Don't see why a lot of people have a 6m+ player as 8th attacker. Just asking for bench points

      1. Why are bench points a problem?

If you buy two relatively cheap players with the intention to start them in home matches, why do you care if the benched one scores? You’ll get price rises also.

Because its a waste of money unless its very cheap defenders, and at that point you shouldnt care that you have bench points because they were never playing anyway.

Most people complaining about bench points have benched the likes of Schade..

          1. Schade’s a funny one as with his pace he is best on the counter so it’s a risk benching him away from home.

But I don’t believe 5.5m or 6m is necessarily a waste. We can all get triple Arsenal defence and pretty much the midfield we want, with Haaland. Why not have a 7th spot you can rotate the home player in?

I definitely think it helps save free transfers as you juggle your squad.

Isn’t the data from the last couple of seasons suggesting home advantage is becoming increasingly marginal? Sure I read an article about that a while back. If true, it would make such a rotation even more frustrating!

          1. I think it was only during COVID times where no fan presence mitigated the home advantage.
