The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Southampton

The sceptics were circling ahead of Ronald Koeman’s first year in charge of Southampton after former manager Mauricio Pochettino was followed through the exit door by a number of first-team regulars. The Dutchman proved them wrong, though, and after dipping into the transfer market to acquire the likes of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Ryan Bertrand, he guided the Saints to a seventh-place finish – one spot higher than they’d managed under the Argentine in 2013/14.

In this members article, we cast an eye back over Koeman’s first campaign at St Mary’s, analysing the chief goal threats and creators and comparing their overall displays to Pochettino’s only full year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

There are so many better options from other teams. Sunderland attackers are a big no no for me

Albrighton is the best at that price but doubts about Leicester line up with new manager in charge.

Not going to lie I'm a bit lost with my team. Hows this looking?

    Courtois
    Clyne, Alder, Cedric
    Hazard, Ramsey/Ozil, Hendo, Depay/8.5 mid
    Rooney, Kane, Sakho

Ozil play more forward. But Ramsey seem (when fit) to always start and make good plays. He can also put up points just plays deeper.

I like it. Good balance team. The 3 defender rotation is a bit weak but by no means the worst I've seen.

Not sure about West Ham CS potential this year and Wilson is unproven at this level. Will have to wait and see how his skill translates.

If you are planning on playing him every week, Wanyama it is.
If you want someone to fill a spot and sell him when you have higher TV, go for someone with low ownership % probably Fletcher.

Not seen many teams having Soton attackers.

I've had 1 since the launch of FPL. Soton have very good fixtures to start the season with.

Seeing this article certainly has made my belief stronger.

I know people are worried about EL.

But EL fatigue doesn't set in the opening 10 gws or so. Could get decent attacking points in those gws.

Mane could make the cut yet

The thing is mate there's loads of great options in the 7-9m range

      Chadli
      Hendo
      Milner
      Mane
      Ozil
      Ramsey
      Caz
      Mata
      Yaya
      Depay
      Cesc

At best we're gonna have 2 of them I think

          at 8m or below maybe

my budget may not stretch that far

it is but I like it

              Henessey, Ruddy

              Ivan, Souare, Huth, Francis, Coates

              Haz, Theo/Ramsey/Ozil, Cabaye/Chadli, Ritchie, (Fletcher)

              Kun, Rooney, Deeney/Ighalo

If Kun isn't fit GW1 then him and Cabaye (or whoever) become Costa and another mid for 8-9m until GW4

Good fixtures but that team's been butchered in the transfer market. I'll take a wait and see approach. If they start well they can easily be swapped in. I think better players with "tougher" fixtures will do better. We'll see.

Azpi is ok but will miss some games (rotation). Spurs were dreadful last year defensively so a bit of a gamble. Damian - tbh I dont know anything about him - they will surely tighten up this year.

    First ever post..
Who is the first player/s into your team that you are set on and why?

Kun - must have, captain option, if can stay fit no one will come close for goals or points.
Costa - Could hit 30 goals if stays injury free. Better points per minute than Hazard. Captain option
Ozil - playing in the hole, seems to be a definite starter in arsenal mids, hit form end of last season
Milner - Great player in EPL and FPL. Will excell with minutes. Assists and goals in proven history.
Azpi - Cheapest chelsea defence option, more bonus points than Ivan 2013/14, Luiz on outer should get more mins.
Cech - Solid shotstopper, entry into arsenal defence

1.Kun - Leader of the front three for title contender team.
2.Ivanovic - Always attackin treat and nailed + lots of clean sheets and often on BPS
3.Hendo - Liverpool captain (my favourite team) + on set pieces, penos and FIFA16 Cover 😀
4.Hazard - Chelsea's inspirational leader and on penos too..
5.Cech - The best Arsenal defensive player at the moment imho.

Origi looked good yesterday. I worry that he is less prolific than Sterling though. His finishing wasnt great at the wrold cup either. Hope he grows as a player. Ings ive always thought would be a decent back up. We need sturridge to stay fit. I dont think ings and origi as our forwards will be enough at the start whilst Sturridge is injured. Those away games...

Don't understand why you lot don't want Benteke.

I think he would be a really good signing for Pool.

Don't think the price is very over the top as well.

And him going to United strengthens your bitter rivals.

      Don't get the logic.

        A) He's going to cost in and around 30m.
        B) Balotelli, Carroll, Lambert didn't work out, so why would Benteke?
        C) We have Sturridge Balotelli Origi Ings. I want a versatile forward. Someone like Berahino.
        D) What Manchester United do, is what they do. We should never sign a player just so that they don't.

Lambert had so much more too him than Tekkers as well, and yet the Brodge still couldn't get it to work. 🙄 But £30m is too much, we can't afford to buy players just because our rivals want him, and certainly not injury prone players who don't suit our style.

He suits it just fine. People just jump on this myth that he can't play their style based on nothing.

He doesn't suit a pressing system. His positional sense is awful and so is his movement, he doesn't press, or make runs, he can't do that well in a system in which he's required to be part of a larger build up, to work for the team and not just be the focal point. Tekkers desire always has been and always will be to have the ball knocked quickly, long, over the top and with crosses, all so he can directly attack the CBs. Liverpool do not play this way, they do not have the personnel to play this way, if he signed for Liverpool he'd flounder about until he gets injured again and is deemed yet another flop in Liverpool's long line of flops.

The thing is, ideally you need a 1st choice striker, we have one

There are very few world class strikers likely to come to United to play 2nd fiddle to Rooney

Benteke on the other hand would look at it as career progression. Sure his game time would be reduced, but he gets to train and play with better players at a CL club and he knows there will still be minutes for him if we want to progress in all competitions

        4. pundit of punts
          • 11 Years

          A. The price is fair according to current market values imo.
          B. Because benteke is better than all of them put together.
          C. Versatility could be provided by the likes of coutinho and Lallana. Think Sturridge and benteke would be a lethal partnership with coutinho behind them.
          D. Sometimes you gotta block moves of your rivals in the transfer market to challenge for the title at the end of the season.

Team I found which could be used for 3-5-2 formation.

    Ruddy/Henessey

    Mings/Cedric/Matthews/Koscielny/Morgan

    Hazard/Ramsey/Coutinho/Depay(or Mata)/Mane

    Rooney/Wilson/Sakho

It may be a bit unbalanced. But Sahko and Wilson rotate very well as two budget forwards. And would probably plan on downgrading one of the mids to upgrade Rooney to Aguero around GW4 or so when he is fully fit. Thoughts? and Thanks.

Henderson will be essential. I guarantee you he will have at least 15 goals and 10 assist

Depay will at least have 15 goals and 8 assist. If you don't have these 2 players then too bad.

Also azpil will outscore ivanovic by a large margin.

Obvously as ivanovic is more of a rotation risk, and azpi has loads more attacking potential

because Azpil will be a huge attacking threat this season, and will be more durable.

He will have at least 7 assists this year.

I recall a string of 6 pointers last season?

Didn't score more than 1 goal in a game for 2 months until the Spurs game where 4 penalties were awarded.

Yep...straight after his injury. I know, I fell in the trap and I won't be doing that again. But in general a fit and running Aguero is almost always (c) material.

No doubt a great option, I just don't think there's a large gap between Hazard and Aguero.

I don't think Hazard was great last year in 'FPL terms', just imagine how many points he'll get if he starts shooting a little more!

Add in Aguero's proclivity for early subs and injuries, and I favour Hazard, personally.

The Singapore XI put in a lot effort, and were tidy on the ball, but didn't threaten our goal at all really.

Iwobi and Akpom the best players who started, Wilshere was tidy but he doesn't look like a No.10, Willock and Crowley were lively off the bench, and Zelalem looks very good.

I though Debuchy was poor as well.

          No, we had 6 substitutions.

Martinez (GK) played the first half, Szczesny played the second.

Bellerin came on for Debuchy in the last 30 mins or so.

Crowley, Zelalem, Willock and Toral came on for Iwobi, Ox, Wilshere and Flamini.

The problem is the fact that his position is so hotly contested, but of all our youth players he is the best, imo.

I can see Capital Once Cup starts and perhaps a role on the bench if injuries mount up.
