Champions League

The UEFA Fantasy Champions League kicks off this evening and, if you’ve keeping up, you will have noticed that we’ve already published a comprehensive guide to the game that should hopefully be of some help to those Fantasy managers looking for some pointers ahead of the big kick-off.

Those signing up can also join the Scout League (code: 212-74) and then sit back and soak up our first “European Watchlist” ahead of Matchday One.

The following batch of players are our ‘Ones to Watch’ in the next two days of Champions League action…

Yann Sommer of FC Basel is the perfect candidate to kick off our European adventure – a cheap goalkeeper with a good fixture (at home to Romanian champions Oțelul Galați). If you’ve a bigger budget then investing in Petr Cech or Julio Cesar (if Inter can get over their 4-3 thumping by Palermo) wouldn’t go amiss.

Dani Alves is a defender by name but certainly not by nature. Barcelona fielded just one single defender in a tie last month and there’s no reason to expect Pep Guardiola to give the Brazilian anything other than a license to attack Milan this evening.

Ligue 1 offers some reasonable value defenders as Souleymane Diawara travels with Marseilles to Greece to face Olympiakos with the hope of keeping some sheets clean while Mathieu Debuchy will be looking to continue some of his recent goalscoring form for champions Lille.

New Inter Milan manager Gian Gasperini is intent on bringing his 3-4-3 formation to the Nerazzurri. This has opened up the option for some of Inter’s full backs to play “Out of Position” on the flank of the midfield – Yuto Nagatomo (an absolute snip as a 5.0 defender) should do that on Wednesday and become a solid option for it. Unless the rumours circling around Italy this morning are true.

If your knowledge extends to Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, choosing from the tie Plzeň and BATE Borisov could also reap reward – our Jonathan Wilson level knowledge of Eastern European football isn’t there. Yet.

Dortmund’s home tie versus Arsenal will give the hottest young property in Germany a chance to show Arsene Wenger just how good he is in the flesh. This is one match-up we’re very much looking forward to seeing and Mario Götze is a big reason behind our excitement.

Another midfielder reportedly on Arsene Wenger’s late window shopping radar was Eden Hazard. Opponents CSKA are in bad shape and bad form right now and Hazard should cause them all sorts of problems – especially coming off his second half, two-goal performance in St. Etienne this weekend.

Lyon have played seven games in all competitions already this season and, as of yet, have been unable to chalk up a clean sheet. News like this augurs well for an Ajax side that will be welcoming Remi Garde’s outfit to the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday night. Christian Eriksen is likely to be the key figure behind any such goals and at just 6.0 in price is more than worthy of a healthy amount of backing.

As Andre-Villas Boas’ main signing of the summer, there might be a lot of weight of expectation upon Juan Mata to bring verve to the Chelsea attack. Priced kindly at 8.5 and with a home game against Bayer Leverkusen we imagine he might just use the Champions League stage to woo the Stamford Bridge faithful.

Cypriot champions APOEL are back in the Champions League after just a year away. It’s not them we’re looking at, though; opponents Zenit will be visiting the shorelines of Cyprus tonight and both Danny (midfield) and Aleksandr Kerzhakov (forward) should have a big part to play in any result.

With the ‘higher ups’ missing the fact that Diego Forlan is cup tied, the Inter frontline should choose itself and we’re opting for Diego Milito. With a mellow 8.5 price-tag and back under the stewardship of an old manager (his most prolific season came under Gasperini at Genoa a couple of years back) goals should on the horizon.

With Igor Akinfeev missing through injury the CSKA defence looks more like a lace curtain than one made of iron. Last season’s Ligue 1 winner and top scorer Moussa Sow will be looking to put his name out on the European stage by making the most of this opportunity.

Those scraping the barrel of the budget options could do a lot worse than visiting FC Basel once again for Swiss veteran Alexander Frei who’ll be facing the previously mentioned Romanian champions.

La Liga also has a couple of options that might shine this week. 7.5 for Roberto Soldado visiting FC Genk looks like another value striking option – he’s scored four goals in his two La Liga games already- and that Lionel Messi chap is reported to be pretty good at this football lark too.

Those are the players we’ll be keeping a close eye over the next two evenings. Don’t forget to join the Scout League and remember deadline for entry is 7:30pm (GMT) tonight – Fantasy Managers will likely have eight team sheets at their disposal to help team selection if it takes their fancy, too.

We’ll be back tomorrow morning with our notes from all eight of those fixtures. Here’s hoping for some big talking points.

Just a general question to everyone. Is it wiser to have a cheap defense and packed expensive forwards or just have a balance team? Can all of you click on my team and tell me where to improve as since the start of the season I've not been getting the points.

    Many Thanks All!

Your current team looks good to me - would stick with it for the next game week at least. But then I'm still a greenhorn and have had a very slow start, too... and it's only my second season so not really in any position to give much advice :-D. Having Rooney appears to be essential to a chance of catching up a bit, and I'm hoping Dzeko will play next gw.
Already joined your league btw 😉

Im probably the only person that doesnt have Silva right now!

Was thinking of putting him in after this weekends games for either
Young or Walcott. I was thinking of getting rid of Young as Man Utd have some hard games coming up. What do you think?

Also, is it worth getting Silva in for the Fulham(a) game or keep Young for the Chelsea(h) game first?

      Hiya lads,

can someone clear this up for me please.

Regarding bonus points, i though they were just awarded to three different players from either side that has played, but take newcastle's game with QPR last night for example, i'm seeing 2 bonus points awarded to simpson, AND obertan? and then 3 bp's for taarabt, and 2 for barton AND ferdinand?

am i mising something here? so bonus points are now awarded to 3 players from each side that plays? and equal numbers of bonus awarded to certain players?

im confused, why is this? why's it changed like this?

      any help/reasons appreciated 🙂

Nah, that's not how it works at all.

BP's are give out to players that have the top three EA Sports Player Performance Index, (PPI), scores for each game.

If two or more players are tied for the best, second best or third best PPI scores, then those players get the equivalent BP's for that position, 3, 2 or 1.

        I hope that helps! 🙂

I've tried not captaining Rooney twice now and I've failed both times. I'm not risking it again, especially when everyone else will captain him in my minileague.

I have RVP and Suarez, which could prove differentials. Only have Bosingwa from Chelsea...I'm considering benching him for Simpson. Chelsea will concede..best he can get is an assist.

the different thing I'm doing is to not make any changes...saving up for the following week when i can ditch Baines and Larrson for silva and a cheap defender for no hits.

Tempted to capt Baines this week, but I've never known a def capt to work apart from that time I captained vidic during a double a couple of seasons ago and he got about a million pts.

True, I'm 29 pts behind and Can't afford to fall further behind.

Not having Silva and sitting with Suarez has been hurting me.

Best I can hope for is that my differentials(Baines/Jarvis/Brunt/Suarez) actually help me gain some ground on my rival that has Young/Mata/Boswinga/A Johnson

If you are 29 points behind, then you can easily afford to fall further behind! 😀

There will still be 33 weeks left even if you do fall back to say, 60 points behind. That's easy to close at less than two points per week.

I am seriously considering putting suarez as captain, i know it sound s like madness but really need to gain points on my rivals (36 pts off top spot, currently on 236 pts).

In my opinion i think they'll of got a bollo*king from losing at stoke and suarez might just explode at tottenham next week?

what do you or anyone else think on this potentially fatal/brilliant decision?

Haha that's exactly what i needed to hear actually, what was i just thinking captaining suarez? (slaps face*)

agreed, 36 pts is not trailing by much is it really, plus my rivals have had very lucky weeks 🙂

hmmm, good question, im leaving them both in, think mata might nab one, and at 9.5 he's got to play imo 🙂

I'll probably be boring and finally captain Rooney.

But if Fletcher is confirmed out and Mick says Ward will play up top, boy oh boy would I like to be brave enough to stick the armband on him.

Seems like a pointless move at the moment, both having chances to score but not taking them.

Sess has a home game then a couple of decent games so I would hold tight for now.

        No news on Hughes yet.

Adebayor should be first choice every week for Spurs imo. Defoe is a rotational risk depending on VDV's availability and where he starts.

Anyone else decided to skip the CL fantasy this year? I played last season and it was an OK distraction, but I can't be bothered to do it again.

      Metro UCL team:-

      Julio Cesar (Abbiati)
Dani Alves, Coentrao, Bosingwa (Nagatomo, Garay)
Eriksen, Gotze, Hazard, D Silva (H Altintop)
      Ronaldo, Messi, Hulk

Any glaring mistakes (suspended/injured players etc.)?

Would you prefer Aguero to Hulk (have enough cash spare to do this)?

Interesting poll on the aftershave (sorry, went to lunch). Hugo boss is quite a woody scent, I have a collection of testers with it in, and although it’s really popular, I don’t think it suits me. I don’t think I’m … burly enough?

But anyway, I cut my hair the other day, got a pile of new clothes on the way, and with a couple of new hoodies I’ll be ready for anything. I think my game is gradually coming back.

I managed (without even thinking) a great backhanded compliment the other day (my friend said he’s never seen anything like it) when I asked a barmaid if she was perpetually disinterested or just really cool, and after we got talking she’s always really friendly.

Was going to stay away from Group A but this version of my team leaves me 8.0 for a mid.

      Schweinsteiger or Nasri
