Welcome to the Weekly Shop – a new, midweek article where I’ll take an early look at those players under consideration for our squads across weekly and daily Fantasy Football games.

Rather than offer you our final selections, the idea is to focus on the potential recruits to monitor before entering teams into weekly leagues and contests, regardless of which game you are playing.

We’ve divided this early scouting into two sections, “skilfully” retaining the shopping theme.

The “Better Buys” will look at the key players for the week ahead, generally those that have shown consistent form or whose team have a promising fixture. The “Poundstretchers”, on the other hand, are the Gameweek prospects that should offer excellent value – often one-week punts, whose lower price tags enable funds to be spent on the big-hitters elsewhere in our lineups.

Better Buys

For those willing to spend a little extra between the posts, Arsenal’s new signing Petr Cech – available for 7.7m in PlayON and 8.3m in Premier Punt – leads the list of must-have keepers this week.

West Ham visit the Emirates having found the net in just two of their last nine away matches in the run-in last term, making two or even three acquisitions from Arsenal’s backline a tempting strategy. Hector Bellerin could also find a place in our teams, then, with his pricing exactly the same as Cech in both games.

Although Branislav Ivanovic has a history of early-season hauls, at 10.5m in Premier Punt and 9.5m in PlayON the value of including Chelsea’s right-back is questionable. Instead we’re looking at Everton’s Phil Jagielka (Premier Punt 8.3m, PlayON 8.6m) as a key buy, with the likely prospect of an opening day clean sheet at home to newly-promoted Watford. The central defender should benefit more than Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman from the defensive points for clearances (25 points), tackling (50 points) and interceptions (100 points) available in PlayON and is more budget-friendly in both games than the Toffees full-backs.

It’s difficult to overlook Eden Hazard as the big-hitter for our teams. At 14.7m in PlayON and 16m in Premier Punt, the midfielder takes a large chunk of our funds but with Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero doubts, we feel we can take risks elsewhere in the squads.

Theo Walcott is classed as a forward in both games and we’re backing him to be the key weapon against a potentially leggy West Ham rearguard. The 11.9m price-tag in PlayON appears to offer value, given that Walcott – who started ahead of Olivier Giroud up top last weekend – earned 4545 points from a hat-trick in Arsenal’s final match of the previous campaign. At 13.5m in Premier Punt, the Gunners man still looks a good option compared to Wayne Rooney at 15.8m.

Poundstretchers

If Kasper Schmeichel (6.6m PlayON and 6.8m in Premier Punt) and Leicester’s defence can carry on the late-season form that secured their Premier League survival, the Foxes shot stopper appears to be a sound pick as new manager Cladio Ranieri welcomes Sunderland to the King Power Stadium.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace’s Julian Speroni has been ruled out until late August, giving us the chance to field back-up keeper Wayne Hennessy in our weekly squad this week – the Wales international can be included at 6.4m in Premier Punt and an even cheaper 6m in PlayON for the trip to Norwich.

Matt Targett perfectly encapsulates the concept of the budget “enabler” in weekly games. The Southampton left-back could be set to deputise for the sidelined Ryan Bertrand in the short-term and, at 6.1m in PlayON and 6m in Premier Punt, the youngster allows funds to be spent elsewhere in the squad, whilst still offering a decent chance of points as the Saints visit St James’ Park.

In midfield we’ll be looking to include another Leicester asset. Riyad Mahrez has impressed over the summer and looks set to be handed a support role behind the front two – he will set you back 8.5m in Premier Punt and 7.8m in PlayON as the Foxes prepare for Sunderland’s visit.

From the top teams, the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jordan Ibe will be considered for squads needing a differential – both will be pushing for starts on the opening weekend after some decent pre-season displays.

Callum Wilson (PlayON 7.5m, Premier Punt 8.3m) stands out in the budget forward category this week as newly-promoted Bournemouth host Aston Villa. Wilson racked up 20 goals and seven assists in 45 league appearances for the Cherries, whilst Villa kept only three clean sheets in 13 league matches under Tim Sherwood last term, making the striker a potentially explosive option.

These are the players I’m considering ahead of the weekend’s first set of weekly contests. On Friday I’ll be back with a further look at both this week’s partner games – Premier Punt and PlayON – as I begin my quest for profit over the 2015/16 campaign.

Pretty sure this is a noooooo.... But,

Any chance I've missed a 4 mil keeper that should start the season no. 1 apart from Hennessey?

Walcott likely to only compete with Giroud for the striker role or do we think he may start on the wing if Giroud starts? Will Wenger drop Oc after his goal?

I think Ox will be preferred on the right. He's a harder worker and will give Bellerin more protection.

Gru on bench, wally off at 65m, Sanchez to cause more headaches.
      The wrong guy got injured!

My guess as a Gooner is:

Ox is back on the bench once Sanchez fully fit
Giroud will become a sub or rotation player, although will still get some PL starts
Walcott will move between ring-wing and striker. When he plays right-wing, one of Coq, Ramsey and Santi will have to be dropped as there are only 2 central midfield spots.

You sure you are a gooner fan and not just a Walcott fan? 😉

Santi would never not play and Coquelin seems more nailed that Theo. as a fan maybe you don't like Giroud but Wenger seems to see how much he helps the team as whole (far more than Theo) and this is why I have doubts.

Problem is, Rooney plays his first three fixtures against his three favourite victims and his ownership keeps growing. Kun's ownership is 1/3 of that and if Rooney scores many points that's going to be serious damage.

Im traveling from Ireland to attend the City and Chelsea match so trust me when I say I want Aguero to hit the ground running this season. But I just cant see him starting GW 1. He is always eased back into action when back after a break. I cant see why this will be different. However with that being said Aguero off the bench against West Brom, no reason why he cant grab a couple.

Hi everyone, you should sign up to goalscorerchallenge.co.uk (if you haven't already).

Only one player per week so it's less maintenance than FPL but the winner this season will receive £1,000. Pick a PL player every week and if they score you get their goals. But you can't pick them again all season so it's pretty tactical.

Go to goalscorerchallenge.co.uk/blog for details of prizes. Enjoy!

    Ivanovic, Cedric, Huth, Coates, Francis
    Hazard, Ozil, Mane, Henderson, 4.5.
    Rooney, Sakho, Kane.

I agree that the team is very well balanced. Good midfield structure with 2 premium, 2 mid-price and 1x 4.5, also 2 premium strikers plus a cheap one, what I am missing is 2 premium defenders and that is why I prefer Koscielny&Wilson to Cedric&Sakho.
Kane is a great captain pick for GW2.

Nice team but no Chelsea defence is a worry. If you downgrade Sterling to Mane you could get Azpi.
I know you have Pelle already but Saints fixtures are good.
Mahrez a bit too punty for a 5th midfielder. Why not Wanyama or Fletcher?

Henderson imo. Penalties. He's captain so will be playing out his skin. Decent returns last year. Solid pick.

I don't think Henderson's that great at them either! But it seems to be a seniority thing at Liverpool with Gerrard still taking them despite Balotelli being there, so I think it's fair to assume he'll be on them for now.

I like A, but I would consider Wilson over Sakho and upgrade Westwood to Ki - who rotates with Mahrez. Maybe Pelle to Benteke, if i`m right that should leave you 1 million over to treat your self to Ivanovic

Really like Mahrez btw, signed a new contract today, I think he could be the 5.5 star this season

Think I'm pretty settled with my team now. Can anyone see anywhere I could improve?

    Kasper (Butland)

    Bellerin Azpi Cedric (Richards Gomez)

    Hazard Sterling Walcott Sinclair (Wanyama)

    Rooney Lukaku Wilson

That leaves me with 2.5m spare to upgrade Rooney to Aguero if necessary. I'm pretty torn between Lukaku and Pelle. Can just see Romelu bagging a hat trick if I take him out!

    RMT Please !

    Schmeichel (Hennessey)

    Richards - Martin - O'Shea (Shawcross & Williams)

Ritchie - Hazard (Vc) - Hoolahan - Walcott (C) (Chadl)

    Wilson - Pellè – Rooney

    5.5 million In the bank
But (0.5m Hennessey to Speroni when fit)
And 5m (Pellè to Agüero in Gw4)

Trying a five way Rotation at the BACK this year. Best i could come up with and picked the best pair of GK's with a differential to the defence.
    (Gk) Lec/Cpa
    (Def) Sto/Nor - Sun/Swa - Sto/Swa - Nor/Ava - Ava/Swa
    (Mid) Nor/Bou

Martin over Bassong at the moment.
Redmond Downgraded to Hoolahan to accommodate Walcott.
Might switch in Ozil if Walcott doesn’t deliver (Upgrade Hoolahan back to Redmond).
Wilson to Deeney When his fixtures improve.

    Any SUGGESTIONS Welcome ! Thanks

Thoughts? It's an unconventional setup, but points value are certainly on defenders and the team rates very good in the RMT tool...

    Butland,Schmeichel
    Ivan, Azpi, Kosc, Skrtel, Rose
    Haz, Mane, Hendo, Siggy, Johnson
    Kane, Wilson, Sakho

As far as a Kun plan, there is none atm. I'm not sure I'll go down that route as I feel there are other options that offer better value. The big downside imo is that it isn't very flexible.

"I feel there are other options that offer better value" - I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous 😛

Downgrade at least 3 defenders and upgrade that mid/fwd line.

      1. Sebastes
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

Ridiculous how? At that price he don't offer too much points per million, if he doesn't play all season. Also, with Sterling in, there's another option to thread through balls to. Obviously, if he hits good form than it'll be very important to get him in, but that goes for a lot of players. Is my reasoning really that outrageous? Enlighten me 🙂

      1. Sebastes

Depends on fixtures I guess. I realise there's a lot of money on the bench each week, and the team's made up on the points projections in the RMT tool.
