Our midweek “Weekly Shop” article arrives once again this afternoon, as we cast an eye over those players currently under consideration for our squads across weekly and daily Fantasy Football games.

This early scouting article is divided into two sections. The “Better Buys” will look at the key players for the week ahead, generally assessing those in-form assets who are braced for a promising fixture. The “Poundstretchers”, on the other hand, are the Gameweek prospects that should offer excellent value – often one-week punts, whose lower price tags enable funds to be spent on the big-hitters elsewhere in our lineups.

In today’s article, we assess what’s on offer in this week’s two featured games FantasyBet, and PremierPunt

Better Buys

Following four clean sheets in five between Gameweek 2-6, West Brom’s backline have since conceded five in their last two, with injuries contributing to a downturn in resilience. A home fixture against a Sunderland side that have scored only twice in their last four is an opportunity to recover the defensive solidity Tony Pulis’ teams typically display, with Boaz Myhill – at 4.5m in FantasyBet and 7.3m in Premier Punt – looking a strong option between the posts. After making six saves in his last outing against Crystal Palace, the keeper could be busy again against a Black Cat team that may be re-invigorated with the arrival of Sam Allardyce.

Chelsea’s defensive frailties have been well documented, with a single shut-out and 17 goals conceded over the first eight matches very unusual for a Jose Mourinho side. Weekend visitors Villa however offer the chance for the Blues to rediscover some coherency in defence, though – Tim Sherwood’s side have failed to score in two of their last three matches and have only notched eight goals in total this term. Chelsea look set to be without Branislav Ivanovic, who has been an uncharacteristic liability this term, whereas Cesar Azpilicueta (FantasyBet 6m, Premier Punt 9.2m) has been their most consistent performer and has started every match so far.

Alexis Sanchez’ (FantasyBet 11m, classed as a forward in Premier Punt at 15.4m) statistics over the initial six Gameweeks indicated that goals were imminent and our patience was rewarded, with five strikes over the last two matches re-affirming the Arsenal attacker as a top Fantasy pick. The Gunners do have a crucial midweek Champions League tie with Bayern to follow their trip to Watford but the Chilean’s stunning form is too integral for Arsene Wenger to rest this weekend, having produced nine goals and two assists in the last five appearances for club and country.

After serving up four goals and five assists since Gameweek 4, Graziano Pelle (FantasyBet 8m, Premier Punt 12.2m) has shot to the top of the forwards leaderboard. The Southampton frontman – who also scored in the midweek international for Italy against Norway – will be a popular pick this week, given that he’s up against a Leicester side that have conceded 15 goals so far (the fourth worst record in the league) and have yet to earn a clean sheet.

Poundstretchers

Steve McClaren’s problems at Newcastle were compounded with the news that Tim Krul will be out for the season after sustaining a knee injury on duty for Holland. Robert Elliot (FantasyBet 4m, Premier Punt 6.4m) is set to fill in over a kind run of fixtures that begins with the visit of Norwich. The six goals conceded at Manchester City could potentially be the wake-up call the Magpies need to lift themselves off the bottom of the table, whilst Elliot could rack up save points if the Magpies backline fails to keep the Canaries at bay.

Arsenal have collected a clean sheet in all four occasions that Gabriel (FantasyBet 5m, Premier Punt 7.1m) has played the full 90 minutes in the league this season, highlighting the Brazilian’s steadying influence in central defence. With Laurent Koscielny unlikely to be available for the clash at Watford, the cut-price Gabriel looks less prone to rotation than the Gunners full-backs ahead of the Bayern encounter and the visitors will be optimistic of another shut-out, considering that the Hornets have scored just once at Vicarage Road so far.

Our next pick is a little more expensive than our usual Poundstretcher options, though Sergio Aguero’s absence for City should leave enough in the bank for most Fantasy managers to splash the cash. With that in mind, we’re backing Palace’s Yohan Cabaye (6.5m in FantasyBet and 8m in PremierPunt), who has been directly involved in his side’s last three goals, scoring two and providing the assist for the other, resulting in back-to-back wins for Alan Pardew’s side. The Frenchman also scored over the international break and looks in fine form ahead of the upcoming visit from London neighbours West Ham.

Saido Berahino (FantasyBet 6.5m, Premier Punt 9.7m) had a difficult few weeks at West Brom after pushing for a move over the summer. After returning to the Baggies first XI, the frontman scored in successive matches prior to the 2-0 defeat at Selhurst Park last time out, where he was withdrawn at half-time. Tony Pulis criticised the forward’s performance against Palace, meaning it’s a risky pick, but up against Sunderland’s porous backline, the youngster should still be considered as a budget option.

These are the players on my radar ahead of this weekend’s weekly contests. On Friday, I’ll be back with a further look at both this week’s partner games – FantasyBet and PremierPunt, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

Mixture of city missing aguero/silva/yaya and bournemouth not being as bad defensively as you'd think, then yes. Elphick by all accounts is a big player for them.

No. City are hopeless without Silva and Kun. Bournemouth have been solid with Cook and Distin at the back

The only thing talking me out of Mane is his minutes after internationals. Seems to be no analysis on how late he's returned those times, i.e. with him already heading to UK (if he's not there already), has he ever been benched given so much rest time?

No reason to bench Mane. He's in form and basically coming back at the same time as Pelle, Sanchez, KDB and others. He'll play. High scoring game coming up. 3-2 Southampton.

WC'd this week (used at the start - Aguero getting injured was a nice bonus). New recruits indicated with an asterisk.

    Myhill* - Gomes
    Bellerin* - Dawson - Dann* - Moreno* - Martin*
    Sanchez - KDB - Mane* - Payet* - Mahrez
    Lukaku* - Pelle* - Ighalo

Leaves 1.9m ITB to help getting Aguero back later. Midfield is a little heavy but I can swap between Ighalo/Mahrez depending on fixtures. Also double WBA (GK/DEF) I'm not sure about, but the next 3 fixtures are juicy (SUN nor LEI).

Also not sure about defense. Currently have Kolarov but prefer Bellerin going forward. Any suggestions welcome.

I expect this will be met with a lot of resistance, but is anyone considering Gomis as a short term placeholder for Lukaku?

I'm probably going to WC in GW11 and Gomis has (STO, avl) over the next 2 weeks, which is pretty good from an attacking sense. I took a quick look at his stats over the last 4 (which he blanked) and I compared them to the first 4 weeks (where he scored in each).

While his stats are down a little, he is still getting a decent amount of shots in the box (9th of all strikers in the last 4 weeks). It's also worth considering that SWA have had tricky games in those fixtures (wat, EVE, sot, TOT).

I was originally going to do

    A) Pedro & Kun -> Haz & Costa (-4)

but I'm wondering if it makes mores sense to do

    B) Sinclair & Kun -> Haz & Gomis (-4)

Would be a master stroke it Pedro started and performed, which is surely possibly with the Brazilians arriving back late. It's probably a gamble to far but I think it is perhaps worth considering. Whatcha reckon?

    Sanchez, Pedro, Mane, Mahrez, Sinclair
    Kun, Pelle, Vardy

Who would you bench? I like the Gomis plan but I'd still shift Pedro. About to drop in price, double Chelsea mid seems unnecessary and avoids a benching dilemma.

Possibly Mahrez. Not a fan of double LEI attack away at the tightest defence in the league (based on shots conceded in the box).

It's risky for sure, but Costa feels just as much of a gamble and at least this way I'd have a better 1st sub if anyone doesn't show up.

    2. Pochecinno
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 2 months ago

The resistance well be against double Chelsea attack which both of your options will end up in. Gomis a decent punt but I'd just get in lukaku from now if you plan to get him anyway

Would be getting Lukaku on a GW11 WC so no need to rush him in now Imo.

Double CHE attack is a gamble for sure, but AVL looks a decent time to do it (and hope they improve!)

More a matter of taste really but I think I'd have Gomis on a "hold" rather than "buy" recommendation. Costa looks the better for a two-week punt.

Yeah, in isolation Costa is better. But if Pedro does start then I think Pedro (AVL) & Gomis (STO) is possibly better than Mahrez (sot) & Costa (AVL) this week. Actually, maybe not...

      10 years, 2 months ago

On one of these pages round here somewhere, Doos speculated that Gomis' stats have dropped off after being subbed on 45 mins vs S'ton. Perhaps unsettled.

Costa the better 2 game filler for me, and if Gomis does well this week can also do Costa -> Gomis for the Villa fixture next week (vs Chelsea at West Ham).

In saying that, I already have Gomis and am bringing in Costa - so will have both until WC in 2 weeks.

I like it. Not huge on Costa or Bony but they could be great points and you can easily get Sturridge/Lukaku/Martial/Kane if they don't fire. Midfield is nice. Unsure about the defence and keepers though. Only Dawson and Fernandez are 100% nailed.

If you need differentials to make up points, could be solid. Could also have the opposite effect and you lose ground. Defense seems very lean to take a punt on Costa in my opinion. I would go with Vardy and spend the money on my defense and potential attacking returns and BPS.

I'm at 260K and am pretty close to rivals, differentials aren't so much to catch up but to jump ahead.

Seems like the perfect week to get on both Costa and Bony but it could all go pear-shaped.

It may sound silly but with Mahrez and Vardy, Cpt Pelle worries me as having 3 players plus your captain in one game means if there is a low scoring game you take out more than 25% of your scoring ability.

Isn't it better to captain a player like for example Hazard (if you have no villa players) and no other chelsea attackers so you really make use of your diversity in player picks?

or is that just b0llox? lol

You should captain the player you think will score highest, regardless of many of his colleagues you have.

Overthinking it.. Just the player who you think will score the most. If that's Pelle then having Mahrez and Vardy shouldn't be any concern and the chance of a low scoring game is no different to the chance of any game being a low scoring game.

Southampton offense in form and Leicester defense is horrendous. It will be a shootout. Maybe Southampton hold Leicester at bay, but definitely not the other way around.

9 assists without pen and just 2 of those assists from Set pieces. If Lukaku is off the pitch or misses a crucial pen. Baines could be back, after all he is the one who gave him and he will be on set pieces, Mirallas is out of picture currently

Article in the Evening Standard about Costa saying he's had weeks of intensive personal training and now feels fit enough to hit the ground running...

I know neither he nor Chelsea have had 'the stats' but fitness is a very important factor in performance that stats don't capture and he had the goals last season so don't completely write him off.

I don't think I'm going to get him this week but a performance of say 4 shots, 3 in the box and 2 on target against Villa might persuade me to get him next week.

After that show vs Arsenal I think he will pull it together.
He will always be trying to trouble the CB's but not like that anymore. Didnt help it was a Derby and Mou would have told him to be on his worst behavior to get a win vs Wegner.
