Mesut Ozil was absent from training on Saturday as Arsenal made final preparations for their Premier League clash against Stoke.

But the in-form German playmaker is expected to travel with the squad for their trip to the Britannia Stadium on Sunday and should still start.

Alexis Sanchez took part in full training 24 hours before the Stoke match after a six-week absence with a hamstring injury as Arsenal prepare to recall the Chilean.

Ozil has been wrapped in cotton wool by Arsene Wenger over the last month as the manager attempts to keep his star player in prime condition.

He was rested for the Gunner’s FA Cup third round clash against Sunderland a week ago and has trained only intermittently over the last month.

Football Insider revealed on 2 January that Ozil led Arsenal’s title charge over the festive period despite struggling with a virus and hardly trained due to the condition, which was later confirmed by Wenger.

Ozil delivered man-of-the-match displays in the Gunners’ wins over Manchester City and Bournemouth to take Arsene Wenger’s team to the Premier League summit.

Mesut Ozil is not getting a rest - he got his during the FA cup game. He had a slight niggle before the Liverpool game, he still played, and this is a tougher game for us.

Also, position-wise, he is our only fit senior number 10. Rosicky at best will make the bench, and surely Iwobi will not start number 10 like he did at FA in such an important game.

If he is injured, that's another thing though...

Yes, Cazorla being fit would facilitate this better, but he still could have Ramsey in that position for some last 15 minutes when up by 2 against Bournemouth.

And, they don't have every otherAMC injured _always_. Yet, Wenger _never_ rests Özil.

I dunno, he did it well with Wally and Giroud at the start of the season, it's just the drop off from Ozil to the next best player is so huge it genuinely damages the team subbing him off, just go back to the last 15 minutes vs City when 2-0 up. Really he should be first man off any and every time we go 3-0 up but he seems to prefer bringing Sanchez off for Gibbs.

It's a constant cycle of being one or two options short so we can't put someone on the bench because we don't have good enough cover, then they get injured from playing too much then we have even less options for rotation.

If Cazorla was fit, the drop wouldn't be that great.

But yes, I did not mean that Wenger could _start_ Ramsey instead of Özil, or sub Özil against City. I said that he could take Özil off early when leading against a significantly weaker team. These occasions come every now and then, and he's too reluctant to take them.

And he has been generally very inflexible with his starting XI. The changes have come when 1) someone has loudly underperformed for a long time, or, more often, 2) got injured. Although this season he did a bit of "rotation" with striker, frankly, it was not rotation, it was Giroud dropped and Wally replace him upfront, then Walcott dropped Giroud upfront, for longer stints and because of their lack of form - rotation is when a player starts some games and is rested between them on longer stints. And Wenger generally does that very very little, if at all.

Wenger's general reluctance to rotate is a genuine worry for his team's chances in the last stages of CL. But maybe they've also often had such a bad start that it has forced them to play the best team week by week. They have often had to affirm their CL knock out round spot on the last round, and are usually chasing the title, or even the 4th place, in PL come January. Maybe they can rest a player in PL this time. They're at least not chasing.

Had Aguero, but Kane (c)..sticking. New recruit Arnautovic in today. Deeney, Gomes, Ayew and Williams on MD 3. 72 so far so pretty happy - still a fair bit off the January prize though.

Said it before and I'll say it again the monthly way to play this is definitely the way forward.

I really hope sterling doesn't play going forward , his overly selfish style is a hindrance to ageuro massively , instead of playing the first time ball he does some irrelevant step over which gives defenders time to track runs etc , it's painful to watch .

True. All he does is cut in and go for goal. Sticking him on the LW doesn't automatically provide the width that MCI need.

Sometimes the middle gets too congested w/Sterling, KDB and Silva if all 3 start

      1. Jazz!
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 11 months ago

I really think Sterling should play on the right, and stick to going wide with his right foot. Improving his wide ability in training too. De Bruyne on the left and Silva in the middle. That would work well imo

        1. Eskimooo
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 11 months ago

I don't think it would change the fact that sterling rarely plays the first time ball , he usually tries showing off with elaborate and totally unescessary step overs while defenders get back into shape and mark players effectively , he's a hindrance to the side .

They are nailed but not the reason they were chosen.

Price was a factor although Wolly gives you the best chance of cs.
Stay away from Citeh and CHS D's - too many goals conceded/rot.

Worth using a FT to replace one of those:

    Courtois, Huth, Williams, Willian ?

    Have 0.4 itb

No. Never keeps cs which is your primary factor when selecting a D.

Toby, Dawson and Kolorov are probably the best of the bunch.

Defence doesn't look great in next 4 fixtures. If I do Rose to Jagielka these are the fixtures I'd have to play for next 4:

    GW23: Southampton (h) - Stoke (h) - Swansea (h)
    GW24: Stoke (h) - Palace (a) - Newcastle (h)
    GW25: West Ham (h) - Chelsea (a) - Stoke (a)
    GW26: Sunderland (a) - Stoke (h) - WBA (h)

That's basically playing Smalling + Jagielka every week and rotating Daniels, Huth and Bertrand. Not all that pretty

    1. Jazz!
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 11 months ago

I really don't think Jagielka is worth it, yet. Everton still look very shaky at the back despite fixtures. Baines could be if you have funds because he offers immense attacking threat.

Jagielka could be Dawson - still have to play both every week. Might just go for the fixtures when it comes to Everton

Now that's a good option. I had considered Leicester/Palace GK rotation but chances are I won't get a good time to make that goalkeeper change I need so might get a defender instead.

Well I can afford Baines for Rose. Taking Smalling out doesn't help my defensive assets really unless it's someone with a really good run of fixtures. Perhaps I bring in Dawson and Jags.
