Wayne Rooney should be available for Man United’s game with Benfica despite missing training. Neil Warnock hails the impact of Heidar Helguson, while Richard Stearman is expected to be sidelined after surgery on a broken wrist.

Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed any fears of an injury to Wayne Rooney in this afternoon’s pre-match Champions League press conference. Rooney and Jonny Evans had both missed training this morning ahead of the game against Benfica but the United boss said this afternoon:

We’ve got one or two knocks from Saturday. Jonny Evans has some tightness in his hamstring but will hopefully be okay tomorrow. Wayne’s got a few knocks and missed training today but should be okay. Chris Smalling trained this morning but won’t be available for tomorrow – he should be okay for Saturday [against Newcastle] and Anderson is out injured.

Richard Stearman is set to face a spell on the sidelines after Wolves confirmed he will undergo surgery on his broken wrist. The right-back has featured in every league game for his club this season but his absence could perhaps open the way for Roland Zubar to stake a first-team claim, having recently recovered from a groin problem. Alternatively, Stephen Ward moved to right-back at Goodison when Stearman was forced off, with Mick McCarthy sending on George Elokobi at left-back. Kevin Foley is still a couple of weeks away from a return.

Owen Coyle has revealed his disappointment following another lacklustre display saw his Bolton side beaten once again. The Trotters boss is far from happy with the lack of fighting spirit amongst his charges and judging by his scathing assessment, it would be no surprise if Bolton are set for a couple of changes this weekend.

The testament to anyone’s character is when you go out there on that pitch and you’re under the cosh, you need your big leaders to organise and be resilient. If you are compact and focused, the minimum you leave with is a draw – but we didn’t have enough of them to do that. They need to sit and analyse that and see if they feel they did their best in the second half. I’m not so sure that we all did.

Steve Harper has returned to Newcastle following a one-month loan deal at Brighton. Going the opposite direction is Kazenga Lua Lua, who has signed for the Seagulls on a permanent basis. He joins Gus Poyet’s side on a three-year deal, having been on loan there since the start of the season.

Kenwyne Jones has pleaded with Tony Pulis for a first-team start as Stoke’s poor league form continues. The August signing of Peter Crouch has seen Jones drift out of the picture, with the role of a second-half impact sub as good as it gets recently. Jones has failed to start a league match since gameweek three for the Potters but with five defeats in the last six, Pulis’ side are misfiring badly. Jonathan Walters has netted 4 time but Crouch has scored just twice so far- with a home clash against Blackburn up next, the Stoke boss may well be tempted to shake things up.

Reports suggest Adel Taarabt was unavailable for QPR last week after losing his passport while on international duty with Morocco. Taarabt has been a peripheral figure since gameweek seven, storming out of Craven Cottage after Neil Warnock subbed him off at half-time. He’s expected to return to the UK today, though with no goals or assists this season, his absence has hardly affected QPR of late.

Warnock hailed the impact of Heidar Helguson, after 5 goals in as many games disproved the doubters. Given a start in gameweek eight, Helguson has proved integral to his side’s goal threat and, with a double downing Stoke at the Britannia last weekend, his manager comparing his influence on the team to that of Bolton’s Kevin Davies:

I couldn’t buy anybody that’d have played as well as Heidar did. Impossible. He’s like a young pup at the minute, he’s really enjoying himself. Yeah, he’ll get injured, no doubt, but at the moment he’s on top of his game and the first name on the teamsheet. We don’t play three games a week in the Premier League and he gets proper rest.

Im going to give Begovic 1 more week. Its not like Sorenson really shined, so hopefully he will be he'll be back, also they are at home to Blackburn so I rekon theres a chance for a clean sheet if he plays.

Well I agree with Impressive Tackle, I think your getting a bit too hung up over your teams value. I think its worth losing 0.1/0.2 to see if Stoke can sort themselves out at the back and Begovic can pick up a few clean sheets. If he doesnt appear next week or they let in another load of goals then I'm definelty offloading him/

Have a wee look back at the fixtures they've had though. Tricky to say the least. This time of year is also when Everton tend to kick on. I'd also add that they should've had a clean sheet Saturday because that was never a penalty.

He's cheap. He's scored ridiculously well from difficult fixtures. He has great fixtures till Christmas and he'll likely score more points than any midfielder in his price range.

I don't share your optimism on his returns, he has done well and is great on dead balls.

Fair enough. All I would add is he's almost equalled the amount of goals/assists he had last season and seems to have less to do defensively at Sunderland than he had to do at Brum.

Time will tell. Be interesting to see how it unfolds.

Yeah every game. He had a wee bit of a shaky start after scoring in his debut but since week 5 he's found his feet and gets into great attacking positions. He's on direct free kicks and I think he will score big in coming weeks.

Planning to trade Ramsey for him soon.

But I will agree that he's not great value for money... YET.

Like Silva, he'll come good eventually. For now, Chelsea-wise is seems smarter to either pump funds into Fat Frank (something I won't do) or pick up on Sturridge's value (something I probably will)...

Different players really. Lamps scores set-pieces and through timing his runs into the box. Dempsey scores with speculative 20+yarders or headers and tidy finishes when playing as a striker.

Dempsey currently is playing a LM/LAM position but not really returning points, and Fulham don't have the best of fixtures coming up. Chelsea were a lot better yesterday in the second-half with Mata in the hole (false 10) and Lamps pushed back to a more conservative holding CM role.

So in one way then Dempsey is a cheaper version of Lamps - neither offers particularly great value (at the moment)...

Quick Champions League update: Arjen Robben and Daniel van Buyten will both definitely start for Bayern Munich at home to Villareal tomorrow, according to coach Jupp Heynckes today. Van Buyten replaces the suspended Badstuber in central defence. Anatolij Tymoschtschuk may come into defensive midfield for Luiz Gustavo.

Neven Subotić will be out for the rest of the year for Borussia Dortmund with a facial injury, and so won't play against Arsenal on Wednesday. Julian Koch also misses out through injury.

FC Basel are still without the injured Stocker, Voser and Yapi, but looked better defensively than usual in beating Young Boys Bern 1-0 at the weekend in the Swiss Super League ahead of their game away at Oţelul Galati.

Kroos played in that position at the weekend against Dortmund, Waldaz, and it was a tactical error as Bayern missed his invention up front. This may happen again, although this hasn't been confirmed. I could imagine the following line-up against Villareal:

        ---------------------Neuer------------------
        -Rafinha-van Buyten-Boateng-Lahm
        -------Tymoschtschuk--Kroos--------
        Robben---------Müller--------Ribery
        -----------------Gómez------------------

I'm hoping for something similar, but loads of FFS people will have VDV, so not sure it will help all that much.

    My current team:

    Westwood / (Vorm)
    Baines / Jones / Brown / (Wilkinson) / (NTaylor)
Lampard (vc) / Silva / Bale / Ramsey / (NDyer)
    RVP (c) / Adebayor / Bendtner

I have 1 FT this week, should I be worried about having no Man Utd attacking coverage?

Im considering using my FT to downgrade Ramsey this week and then upgrade Bale to Nani or Ade > Hernandez next week. Worth it?

Thanks for the nice rant on my post... but why is it hard to believe that people would consider players from the most conistently strong premier league team in recent times, who now have a great set of fixtures to help them get back into the form that players of their calibure can produce?

......and I never mentioned Rooney as he is very much a hot and cold form player and at the minute his returns are cold. Nani & Hernandez are slightly more consistent (if less explosive) and thats why they are the two players I am considering.

Looking forward to it already. Just don't know if Baines is quite worth 8 mil.

Looking at those fixtures though, before end of Jan, I think maybe 4/5 CS, plus a few assists and goals ... looking like there'll be many points for him.

I think it's just a matter of whether Aguero / Rooney go on a run or not, cause you will want them, but as long as its just RVP of the big hitters, I think defence gets more precidence.

The players eat it pre-game. Food costs money. Kenwright better start selling Corrie on Blu Ray and fast!

I'm so bitter about this... lol. Wilkinson and Rodwell is a hell of a way to waste the two free transfers it took me a month to build up.

The saying "abs are made in the kitchen" couldn't be more true. The little effort you can put into improving your diet is worth it for the upkeep of great, great abs.

Just ordered poppadoms with mixed pickle, chicken jalfrezie, pilau rice and a garlic nan. Not actually sure what abs are but I'm starving.
