Romelu Lukaku disappoints yet again as Everton and Palace play out a goalless draw at Selhurst Park. The Eagles serves up a second successive shut-out in the first of their two double Gameweeks. Elsewhere, United’s Marcus Rashford strengthens his prospects of retaining a starting berth by netting the opener in a 2-1 cup win at West Ham.

Lukaku blanks again

Everton extended their winless streak to five matches with a goalless stalemate at Selhurst Park as Gameweek 33 came to a bitterly disappointing conclusion.

Runaway leader in last week’s Captain Poll, with in excess of 70% of the votes, Romelu Lukaku failed to justify our collective show of faith and posted his fourth successive blank. Despite having clashes against Southampton and Liverpool up next, his 44% ownership won’t have too much optimism ahead of another double Gameweek for the Merseysiders.

Joel Robles proved to be the chief beneficiary of Everton’s first clean sheet in seven outings, picking up two save points and three bonus for an 11-point haul. Pitched at 4.3, the Spanish shot-stopper furnishes us with a budget path into a defence that lacks the consistency to warrant serious investment.

Post-match, Roberto Martinez conceded he has major worries over three of yesterday’s starters, with midfield duo Aaron Lennon and Ross Barkley both forced off in the second-half:

“Ross and Aaron have been accumulating a lot of minutes. I think Ross had a knock at the end and he couldn’t move freely. Lennon we’ll have to assess, I’m a bit worried about his hamstring. Baines had to stay on but in the last five minutes, he couldn’t move freely, so those three are going to be a serious concern for Saturday.”

Having received his marching orders for a second bookable offence, James McCarthy will be sidelined for the Merseysiders’ home encounter against Southampton this weekend.

Another clean sheet for Palace

Palace lacked the clinical touch to capitalise on their one-man advantage and territorial dominance in the second period.

To the jubilation of managers that targeted the Eagles’ rearguard for their double Gameweek 33, Alan Pardew’s troops notched their second shut-out on the bounce. The recent turn of events is all the more surprising bearing in mind that Palace had failed to keep a shut-out in 12 league outings prior to this week. Nonetheless, Alan Pardew’s side will do well to sustain their diligence during their consecutive road trips (ars & mun) next Gameweek.

Yannick Bolasie came up short for his 50,000 new owners, stretching out his scoreless run to 10 matches. With Manchester United and Arsenal – who possess the best and second-best home defensive records, respectively – next on the Eagles’ agenda, an exodus could be on the cards for the DR Congo international.

Dwight Gayle was forced off at the break through injury and is a doubt for the trip to Arsenal, with Connor Wickham favourite to start at the Emirates this weekend.

Rashford helps United through

Manchester United set up a meeting with Everton in the FA Cup semi-finals after beating West Ham United at the Boleyn Ground.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a sumptuous strike, delighting 30,000 Fantasy managers that snapped him up ahead of the Red Devils’ double Gameweek 34 (AVL & CRY). Hauled off at the break against Spurs last weekend, there were doubts over the youngster’s pitch time after the fit-again Wayne Rooney was named amongst the subs last night but Rashford’s display against the Hammers suggests he may well remain in pole position for the lone striker role over the double.

Anthony Martial also served a reminder of his points potential by providing assists for both the visitors’ goals. The France international remains the most secure route into the Red Devils’ attack and has now recorded attacking returns (three goals and one assist) in four of his previous six starts, which bodes well for his chances of punishing Aston Villa’s obliging defence.

In defence, Timothy Fosu-Mensah was passed fit following his injury scare at White Hart Lane, setting him up for further starts in the coming weeks. Priced at a mere 3.9 in FPL, the Dutch defender’s rise to prominence is an irksome development for Matteo Darmian’s 17,000 new owners, given that the Italian right-back looks highly unlikely to reclaim a regular starting berth.

Tomkins goal not enough for Hammers

Despite mounting a late comeback, West Ham were unable to emerge victorious in their final cup fixture at the Boleyn Ground.

James Tomkins set up a grandstand finish with a goal 11 minutes from time, latching onto an Andy Carroll header. The latter lays claim to four goals and one assist in four outings across all competitions, illustrating his potential to flourish as a differential source of Hammers attacking coverage for their double Gameweek 34 (lei & WAT).

Winston Reid was omitted from the squad and James Collins was only deemed fit enough for a spot on the bench, so James Tomkins partnered Angelo Ogbonna in central defence and Michail Antonio remained at right-back as Slaven Bilic rolled out a 4-2-3-1. Antonio’s 4% ownership will hope that the return of Collins and Tomkins triggers the winger’s reinstatement in the attacking quartet.

It was a good ploy for those not wildcarding to ensure they keep up. Another season this could have paid off. This year it was not to be sadly.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Rough with the Smooth - Gameweek 33

How was your game week? Was it rough or smooth? Are you a smug single-gameweeker or a down in the dumps double gameweeker.

    Also bonus question

Was GWK 33 really that bad? Would your GWK 32 squad got much more.

Here's my Rough – Captaining Lukaku, doubling up on Everton defence – with Jagielka, Coutinho and Sakho no shows, dumping Ward on my wildcard.
And the Smooth – Robles in, Sanchez in and drafting in Simpson.

If I’d have kept my GWK 32 side, apart from transferring out Vardy to Lukaku (which would have been my likely non wildcard move), then I’d have scored 73.

My actual score was 60 so I’m 13 points down. That’s not great but certainly not toys out of the pram stuff.

Over the season in terms of GWK ranks it was not my worst at all, in fact eight other weeks have been far worse....which possibly says more about how this season has unfolded than the most recent Gameweek rank. 🙂

Rough: Losing Leicester and Spurs players on a WC
Smooth: getting Ward and Robles in

It wasn't that bad for me tbh. Dropped from 6k to 7k, it could be way worse if it weren't for my two Joels

      You tell me.
A total score of 40, but that was with Simpson and Martial coming off the bench.
Jagielka injured in the first game.
      KDB run about.
      No Coutinho.
Blank from Captain with a double.
Got rid of Siggy, Williams, Vardy.
Had Delaney in the team up until deadline and got rid for Jagielka.
Dropped from 11k to 28k after 7 green arrows.
Lost a mini league lead that I finally landed after chasing since August only to lose it a week later where by he now has a 40 point lead and is going in fresh with a wild card this week.
      (rough by the way)

And I thought my 46 was bad!
Actually it was, and it would have been even worse than yours if Milner hadn't come off the bench to replace Coutinho.

Lost out to the non-wildcarders through selling Alderweireld, Siggy, Alli, Vardy and Ozil in my GW32 wildcard.
Also lost out to most wild-carders through not having any Palace or Everton defenders or goalkeepers (what were the odds against them getting 3 clean sheets between them when Palace hadn't kept one since GW19 and Everton not since GW24?).

Dropped from 146k to 220k overall, and red arrows also in all but one mini-league.

Dont think my WC GW33 team is much worse off than GW32 team.

Only Siggy,Vardy, Alli, Lloris, Williams were major scorers = 45 points

Lukaku (c), Robles, Lennon, Delaney, Bolasie gave me 44 points...

Although, i might have to take a hit this week to get rid...

So probably I lost about 13 points including lost Kun captain points if I didnt WC

I scored 74, my GW32 squad would have scored 69, since I would have benched Alli and sold Vardy for Lukaku.

All in all it feels alright, but I'm nervous about DGW34 due to rotation and having my team full of Palace and Everton players who have nothing to play for...

Gabriel rotation fears is another big issue...

      Score: 74

      Rough:

      (C) Lukaku, low-scoring midfield.

      Smooth:

Dann, Delaney, Robles. Went without Aguero so I head into GW34 with (Cech, Bellerin, Smalling, Fosu, KdB, Alexis, Coutinho, Firmino Luka, Studge, Deeney) and without any of the budget options that look to have gone wrong. Despite some rotation risk, points potential looks high so i'm calling that GW33 decision... SMOOTH.

Rough – (C) Kaka, Bolasie, Rashford took off at half time, De Bruyne didn’t start, Countinho didn’t play a single minute.

Smooth – Robles clean sheet and save points, Ward 2 clean sheets and assist, Sanchez & Aguero

77 points, did better than my week 32 team would have.

Rough - I got 35 points from the first run of games (Coutinho & Sakho no-show).
Smooth - I ended the GW with 69 points (Koscielny & Lanzini points from the bench) Delaney & Robles owner.

*I used my WC in GW 33

Smooth: Keeping Alderweireld, Drafting in Robles, CRY 2 clean sheets.
Rough: Clichy playing for 1 minute keeping Simpson on my bench

GW33 worked out OK. 81 points thanks to somewhat conservative WC retaining some SGWers.

    16. Larry Legend

      Rough:
      - Ross Barkley, daft WC pick
      - Captain Lukaku
      - Ditched Delaney and Robles despite having in my draft squad all week
      - Simpson last on the bench, Gabriel 2nd on the bench came on ahead of him for a 1 pointer
      - Rivals all gained 20-30 points, now very level at the top of my league

      Smooth:
      - One rival used TC on Lukaku
      - Koscienly goal
      - I now have a serious differential to my rivals in Sanchez

      Bonus question:
I got 49 points, and my GW32 squad would have got 66 with Aguero staying as captain. However there is no way I would have ever gone without Lukaku as captain in GW33, so you have to be realistic about these things.

      - 47 points in total..
      - Klose injured, requiring a hit.
      - Simpson benched.
      - doubled my overall ranking.
      - Stupidly captained KdB, knowing the risks, after changing from Kun on Thursday, after changing from Coleman Wednesday, both got 9 to KdB's 1.

Smooth: My GW32 WC paid off this week (in addition to last week), if only by a few points. Like Luke said in the podcast, it helps to have had a ropey team to start, but my WC earned me an extra 23 points in GW32, and an extra 7 in GW33 (74 vs 66) for a total of 30, and my sixth straight green arrow (up to 37k from 69k when I played my wc).

Rough: I wanted to keep at least one Spurs/Leicester asset on the WC, thought long and hard about it, and kept Mahrez over Kane, Alderweireld, Ali, Vardy, and Huth; Mahrez alone of those has blanked both gws.

Pretty circumspect all things considered. Given the number of DGW players, 69pts was a poor score and team looking very ropey. On the other hand, I played WC in GW32 so I'm still up on the deal.

No prizes, I assume for Lukaku(C) so I'll go with a "rough" of Jagielka, Bolasie, Wickham with a side salad of Bellerin off the bench for Sakho.

I scored 78 post wildcard, very pleased overall moving up 100k and 6th green in a row.

My smooth's were getting in Dann and Robles who both did well, plus Kun, Sanchez, Iwobe and my last single gameweeker Simpson scoring points.

My rough's were the same as most people's, Lukaku(c) the biggest culprit! Also I sold 6 goals from my old team including Ozil and Alli but the new players just about got me out of jail scoring 78-71. My old team only had that as Cook would've been my third sub for Wimmer/Nyom for 10 points! Of all the weeks!

Hopefully my 14DGW players get me a big haul this week!

Rough: I wasted my TC on Lukaku and benched Iwobi's 10 points.

      Wildcarder here.
Rough - Lukaku captain, chose KDB over Ozil on the wildcard, sold Vardy.
Smooth - got Sanchez & Milner, and kept Huth.

      Rough rough rough.

On WC, changed from Robles / Lovren to Mignolet / Jagielka at last minute.

Reward for correctly recognising more rotation risk in Pool defence was 5+2, instead of 14+8 (Simpson off bench).

Now instead of using FT to insure against Gabriel being dropped, probably have to take -4 to sort Jagielka and Lennon on BB.

Dropped from near to 200k to almost 300k overall rank.

Rough: Jagielka, Couthino, Sakho ... 🙁 Landing on Gabriel over Iwobi since I though Gabby should be more nailed. Felt pretty confident on keeping Mahrez an Kane, and then Leicester and Spurs win 2-0 and 3-0 with neither being involved - Alli and Alderweireld otoh, I sold. No Palace defence, who on earth could have predicted two clean sheets in a row. Come to think of it, this might very well be my worst GW ever!

Now personally I had a great week scoring 82 (Robles, Iwobi, Delaney, Coleman, Sanchez all WC'd in) but having shipped Vardy, Alderwireld, Siggy and Ali, I've probably come out even. However...

Friend of mine in my mini league benched Ali, Alderweireld and Scott Dan for something like 37 points on his bench. He was not pleased...

      My rough:

My starting 11 would have been Hennesey, Alderwereild, Bellerin, Huth, Alli, Payet Ozil, Mahrez, Vardy, Aguero and Kane. (I had Williams too but would have benched). - 94 points with an assumed Aguero captaincy.

This week's 11 - Robles, Delaney, Simpson, Bellerin, Coutinho, Kdb, Sanchez, Payet, Mahrez Lukaku, Aguero. Rashford in for Coutinho. - 66 points

I'm down 28 points and have lost my wildcard. I have serious concerns about the game time of Gabriel and KDB too now, and perhaps Coutinho. My main frustration was a late decision I made - I went with KDB over Ozil in line with what alot of people were doing and went with Gabriel as my third choice defender (instead of Fuchs). Given Ozil's nailed on status and centrality, and Arsenal's wonderful fun of final fixtures, I think that this is an error and I might reverse it this week (at a significant lose of value and for essentially -8 as I will use more transfers in 35).

Delaney can only see a 2,2 (at least given the rest of my picks ARS MUN I'm hoping for this)

Can TFM get 8 or more points in 34? I think so, has a double in 37 too.

The Smalling v Sanchez for captain debate is interesting.

I think if you're a betting man you're betting on 2 clean sheets for United.

So Smalling on max bonus in each game = 18 points, a very good return for a captain.

Even if we only expect 1 goal in each game for Sanchez without bonus that's 14 points straight away. That's before we've taken into account clean sheet points (I think most of us are expecting Arsenal to keep clean sheets too), potential assists and bonus.

Smalling looks a great shout and if he nicks a goal you could be laughing, but does Sanchez not have more upside? Or are we worried about the amount of goals he's going to score?

      Sanchez definitely has more upside.

Smalling hasn't been attacking at all this year, wouldn't bank on a goal (cue goal). I think United have been lucky to keep as many clean sheets as they have done at home, whether that's down to their possession based game or DDG or just luck, but their stats are nearly Villa-esque at the back.

    Hi All,

Anyone enabling their TC chip this week?

I see Sanchez is winning the C poll by a landslide but where is the love for KDB?

I can honestly see KDB scoring well in both of his fixtures. Against Chelsea who he will always want to play well to show them what they missed out on. Newcastle can't keep a clean sheet. His form has been amazing recently. As he has been out for so long he has the hunger and fitness some of the other big hitters are lacking. I know he was rested the other day but the next round of UCL is a couple of weeks away so he should play both games.

I think I'm going to be TC KDB this week - just wondering if anyone else is thinking the same...

the plan was I bench boosted this week, but with Darmian unlikely to play both and a bench that didn't look as strong as it did in my head (Palace defence, Bolasie, Alli) I think I'm going Sanchez TC

Major captaincy options.... Am I missing anything?

    1) --- Sanchez --- (CPL / WBA)

FORM --- 3 goals, 3 assists in last 5 league games.
OPPOSITION --- Both very poor teams, Palace first 2 CS of 2016 this week, West Brom traditionally don’t get battered by Arsenal, you would expect Arsenal to win on paper but could be tighter games than we’re giving them credit for.
MOTIVATION? --- Yup, fighting to hold onto third spot.
CONCLUSION --- Safe choice, historically explosive but not as much this season (bar 2/3 games), nailed on.

    2) --- Aguero --- (che / new)

FORM --- 4 goals in last 5 league games.
OPPOSITION --- Kun has traditionally done better at home, however if there was ever a chance to capitalise on beating Bournemouth away, it’s against Chelsea’s rotated kids and Newcastle’s dire defence. Two games that City could potentially win by 3 goals each.
MOTIVATION? --- 2 points behind Arsenal, prioritising the cup, but still not ignoring the league.
CONCLUSION --- Riskier choice, may not get 180 minutes, likely to at least start both, explosive but a bit of a home bird.

    3) --- Martial --- (AVL / CPL)

FORM --- 3 goals, 3 assists in last 5 *HOME* league games.
OPPOSITION --- Two of the worst teams in the league defensively in 2016, Palace with two sudden shock CS but still not solid. Would expect two wins for Man United but their attack has stuttered at times under LvG.
MOTIVATION --- Chasing the top 4 pack, prioritising the cup, but still not ignoring the league.
CONCLUSION --- Safe, nailed on, not explosive, but consistent enough at home especially v bad opposition. Rooney back might help with the creative side of things.

    4) --- OTHER OPTIONS ---
--- Ozil -> See Sanchez, but in slightly worse form. Better creatively, better bap magnet, worse explosiveness.
--- KdB -> See Aguero, but riskier in terms of minutes. Arguably in better form since returning from injury, explosive.
--- Sturridge -> Mr. Consistency when he avoids injury. Not as risky as ManCity in terms of rotation but still a risk. Not very explosive but tends to do well when he plays.

So... Are KdB / Sturridge too risky to consider? Is it worth going for explosiveness(Sanchez) over reliability(Martial)? Can City continue where they left off v Bournemouth and lay these "away day" woes behind them with easy opposition?

Safe option, nailed on, against two useless attacks, looks good for 10-15 points.

However, see above, I think United have been slightly lucky at the back, their defensive stats are pretty terrible, some of the worst in the league. I still fancy them for two CSs this week but for pretty small upside and a low ceiling, I'd rather punt on an attacker with a high ceiling.

Sanchez for me for the fixtures, form and nailedonness....the holy trinity of a DGWK captain. Plus he's midfield as well so gets those valuable clean sheet points. Martial second choice for me....consistent and love to punish weak sides at Old Trafford.

        • 15 Years

How good is his form though? Currently being outshone by Iwobi on the opposite flank, albeit not by much, and Iwobi could be a plus for Sanchez too.. Will Giroud get a game and stifle Sanchez again? Or will we see Sanchez capitalise on his recent upturn in form and clinch 3rd spot with a huge haul?

Martial does love to punish weak sides at Old Trafford, but hasn't fully exploded in terms of massive points yet... yet, it could happen this week alright!

Yep I was thinking about that.. Hiddink might see Chelsea vs City in one of two ways:

          1) Big side, test the kids against proper opposition with little risk.

There's also the possibility of playing it safer and going for a lower ceiling player such as Bellerin / Smalling / DDG / Cech / Hart but these look unlikely to get more than 16 points, albeit likely that they get 10+.

With people doubling up on these teams defensively, is it worth captaining too to give yourself an effective triple up? Do we trust their defences that much?

Firstly, is it worth a 4 point hit to bring in Rojo or Fosu-Mensah for Wollscheid? Whichever Utd defender I brought in would have to outscore Morgan (who I would play instead) by more than 4 to make it worth it. If so, which of the 2 Utd defenders should I bring in?

Also I will be playing my triple captain this week. My initial instinct was to go for Aguero who is predicted 9 at the moment but I also have Ozil who is predicted 11.41. My fear is that Aguero will be the popular choice so if I ignore him and he bangs this week then it could prove costly.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Darlow-Robles
    Bellerin Koscielny-Delaney-Sakho-Smalling
    Sanchez-Coutinho-De Bruyne-Lennon-Lanzini
    Aguero Lukaku Martial

Would you take a hit to do Lukaku+Lennon to Origi+Nasri?

    Any other suggestions?

Sessegnon worth the punt? Has double in 34 and a 35 fixture.

Or stick with a Bolasie to Lanzini ft this week?
