Tracking the Fantasy Football Veterans – Gameweek 37

The group of 34 experienced Fantasy Premier League managers I’m tracking were having an awful season when I started this series back in Gameweek 15. With one Gameweek left I take a penultimate look at their progress so far to see if, as I predicted when the series launched, they would succeed in their mission to rise up the rankings.

TRANSFERS

Gameweek 37 transfers by positions (% of all transfers in bracket)

– Goalkeepers: (00.00%)

– Defenders: (35.63%)

– Midfielders: (35.63%)

– Forwards: (28.74%)

Veterans made 2.56 transfers on average in Gameweek 37.

Transfers In:

– Andy Carrol (WHU): 24.14%

– Eden Hazard (CHE): 20.69%

– Aaron Cresswell (WHU): 17.24%

Transfers Out:

– Harry Kane (TOT): 19.54%

– Mamadou Sakho (LIV): 9.20%

– Dele Alli (TOT): 6.90%

HITS AND CHIPS

Veterans took on average 1.5 hits in Gameweek 37, much more than the top 10,000 managers as well as managers overall. It is worth pointing out though that the overall number is so small as, according to the FPL discovery website, there are only 41.30% active teams left.

Chips

Veterans who saved their bench boost chip had the biggest score, although the triple captaincy chip also proved effective.

CAPTAINS

Captains of all 34 teams:

– Dimitri Payet (WHU): 70.59%

– Andy Carroll (WHU): 17.65%

– Eden Hazard (CHE): 5.88%

These three players were also the most popular captain choices amongst top 10,000 managers as well. Among the veterans, 82.35% used their Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 37.

Captains of the Veterans who used Triple Captain chip:

– Dimitri Payet (WHU): 75.00%

– Andy Carroll (WHU): 17.86%

– Eden Hazard (CHE): 3.57%

– Jermain Defoe (SUN): 3.57%

Payet bagged a brace of assists against Manchester United, satisfying the legion of managers that bestowed him with the triple skipper’s armband. However, Carroll scored just three points in the two home games and proved a major disappointment. The small proportion of Hazard and Defoe triple captainers were also left happy, with both recording double-digit hauls across their two games.

OVERALL RANKINGS

– Maximum points: 126

The current average overall position of the veterans is 14,932, their best ranking so far. To put this into perspective their average overall rank is 6,230 places higher than after Gameweek 36 and markedly better than their Gameweek 15 average overall rank of 156,500.

Among the veterans, 79.41% gained a green arrow in Gameweek 37 and their average score was 94.21 points (87.97 after hits). This is way up on the overall average (55.20 points, 54.10 after hits) and also better than the top 10,000 managers’ average (79.60 points, 75.80 after hits).

Half of the 34 veterans are now amongst the top 10,000 managers in FPL and on current form I expect that proportion to rise after Gameweek 38.

Good to dig out the smiling pensioner pic again. 🙂

As said on this week's Scoutcast saving chips and wildcards for the double gameweeks has been key to the veterans success.

For most of these experienced managers when the chips were announced their first thought was to save them for double gameweeks.

Very interesting that your research backs up the assertion that those who bench boosted in GWK 37 not GWK 34 were better off. Those huge points hauls for Aguero and Sanchez in GWK 34 for those that also triple captained then add further weight to this.

  Cheers Jonty, and thanks for all your help. This articles would never exist without your help and edits.
  It is important to track great fantasy managers, especially in this season where (because of the chips), rankings were turned upside down in the first 10-20 weeks. As I mention before, I don't wanna know templates for TOP10k managers because, they are in top 10k mostly because of the chips, not because of their skills. Overall ownership of players are even less important, because 60% of teams are ghost ships.
  Next season, with better sample, and starting from Gameweek 1, I think everyone will benefit from numbers in this articles.

    This is a really good point. Getting a "baseline" score from the veterans is a great way to assess how the season really is panning out for your standard "non-casual" manager like many on here.
    
    The point about top 10k being there because of Guthrie chips is a great one - in that send FPL this season has been more like Sky FF overall, as the last few weeks really count for those who haven't shot their load of chips (FPL) or transfers (Sky).

        Ha, I thought 'Guthrie chip' was an actual term. Sounds like it should be - perhaps with its origins in Victorian cricket where a batsman called Guthrie used up all his energy in the first few overs then collapsed through exhaustion.

  A very interesting exercise, Kavalli.
  
  Although I may not be one of the "veterans" under observation in this experiment, my own FPL season in terms of overall ranking performance, very much mirrors these veterans.
  
  Indeed, after week 37, I crept into the top 10k too. I would sit a lot higher if the TC chip on Andy Carroll had worked out, but a satisfactory gain nevertheless.
  
  I have a question for you: Whilst this experiment does indeed prove that the cream does eventually rise to the top, do the vets have what it takes to be the overall winner? What is the overall winner doing differently to the vets? Your analysis suggests that the vets were too far back in the rankings at week 15 to win the FPL title.

    Thanks Jafalad. I think that , to be an overall winner , you must have extraordinary luck through the season. Like winning in a lottery. One guy in sample of 3,7 million players will certainly have enough luck in almost every single round. Overall winner for this season played bench boost chip in GW37 and had only 79 points, so I think even he will be the best in the world, his skills are questionable. He played only one WC, didn't use the first one. Difference between veterans and overall winners: If some of the veteran had that kind of luck, he will be the overall winner and 100-150 points more than second in the world. Some of the veterans in my sample were overall winners in previous seasons: Simon March, Tom Fenley.

Well done to see this through Kavali. I haven't really being following it (probably because I am not in it, and because I didn't seem to struggle as much as some this season) but it will be a good indicator for next season to see how the 'handicap' of saving chips unwinds throughout the season. This year was very much weighted to the back end of the season.
