Southampton became the latest Premier League club to break their transfer record this week, with the signing of Lille midfielder Sofiane Boufal for a reported £21 million.

The 22-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal at St Mary’s, and speaking to the club’s official website, stated how it was Saints’ long held interest in him that persuaded the Morocco international to join the south coast club:

“For me it was my choice. I took time to choose the best club for me, and I think Southampton is very good for me and my progression. I spoke with the coach and the whole club, and for me it’s the club that wanted me not just yesterday, but for four or five months. I can see the motivation of the directors and the club to sign me. For me that’s very important.”

The History

Born in Paris, Boufal began his youth career at French club Angers, and made his professional debut at the age of 18 in a Ligue 2 clash against Istres in August 2012.

He would only make one other appearance during the 2012/13 campaign, but the following year saw Boufal’s development accelerate – playing 28 league matches, he registered two assists.

After starting the 2014/15 season at Angers, totalling four goals and three assists from 16 league appearances, Boufal joined Ligue 1 side Lille in January 2015. He took little time to settle with his new side, racking up three goals and six assists in just 14 league outings.

It was last season when Boufal really took his game to the next level, though, scoring 11 goals and adding four assists in just 29 league matches. His performances reportedly caught the eye of several top clubs around Europe, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United.

Despite being born in France, Boufal chose to represent Morocco at international level, and made his senior debut in a 1-0 win over Cape Verde in March 2016. That’s one of only two appearances he’s made for his country thus far.

The Prospects

There’s little doubt the acquisition of Boufal is something of a coup for Southampton.

Capable of playing across all the attacking midfield positions, the Moroccan has lightening quick feet, and has the ability to dribble through the tightest of spaces. A lack of physicality was a slight concern during his formative years, but he has improved his upper body strength, and now appears strong enough to let his natural ability flourish at the highest level.

Tellingly, of Boufal’s 84 appearances for Angers and Lille, 56 came as a winger.

Claude Puel has started with a midfield diamond in each of the opening three Gameweeks but the new boy’s arrival may well persuade the Saints boss to change his approach as he seeks a first win of the campaign.

A return to the 4-2-3-1 formation favoured by previous Southampton managers Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman is the likeliest scenario- this could see Boufal, Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond play across the attacking midfield positions behind a lone striker.

Such an outcome would clearly dent Redmond’s appeal, given he’s been playing as a forward during the opening three Gameweeks.

If Puel persists with his 4-1-2-1-2, it remains to be seen how he will utilise his options. Neither Boufal (five foot nine) and Redmond (five foot eight) are the most physical of players and it seems highly unlikely that both would be fielded as a front two, with Puel looking for more strength and height through the middle.

Looking at Boufal’s underlying statistics compared to Tadic and Redmond, the Morocco international averaged a shot every 46.9 minutes last season, inferior to both Tadic (28.4) and Redmond (31.6) so far in 2016/17.

He also trails Tadic in terms of creativity, with the Serbian averaging a key pass every 24.7 minutes, compared to every 32.5 minutes for Boufal at Lille last season. That is slightly better than Redmond, though, who’s registering a key pass every 33.8 minutes so far this season.

Boufal does lead the way as regards to dribbling though, averaging 6.5 dribbles per match last term, compared to 4.0 and 3.7 per game for Tadic and Redmond respectively so far this season. Again, this highlights his ability to deliver when fielded in wide areas, offering the Saints a replacement for the departed Sadio Mane.

Priced at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s slightly cheaper than Tadic (7.4) and more expensive than Redmond (6.1).

Having sustained a knee injury towards the end of last season, Boufal is still building up his fitness after undergoing surgery, as explained by Saints Executive Director of Football Les Reed:

“Saints fans may have to wait for a few weeks yet to see him demonstrate his skills, as Sofiane had a delayed start to his pre-season training and will be working very hard with our fitness staff to get up to full match fitness. At just 22 years of age, he will undoubtedly continue to improve as a player, and we’re very pleased that he will be able to make that progression with us here at Southampton.”

Certainly, Southampton’s fixtures are also fairly mixed over the coming weeks, so perhaps it’s only when their schedule becomes more favourable from Gameweek 14 onwards (cpl, MID, sto, bou, TOT, WBA) that Boufal really comes onto our radars.

He should also have had time to up his sharpness and adjust to the Premier League by then, while his Saints team-mates may also need more time under the new manager to find their best form.

Only Liverpool (55) have managed more goal attempts than Southampton’s 53 so far this season, but only 21 of those have come from inside the box, ranking them joint-10th in that category, illustrating the need for more of a cutting edge.

So although Saints look to have bought a very talented player in Boufal, his immediate fitness concerns and the uncertainty over Puel’s tactical approach means it’ll perhaps be best to wait and see how the 22-year-old fares in his first few appearances before considering investing in the midfielder.

Once settled, though, Boufal could well prove to be the main man at St Mary’s if he can continue on the upward trajectory that has already drawn comparisons with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

Of Gray is suspended, would it be worth (-8) ?

    Tadic + Aguero + Gray

Ozil + Diego Costa + Benteke

GW6 WC is my plan in order to accomodate Aguero back in.

could also be just Aguero & Gray ➡ Diego Costa & Lukaku/Benteke for 'only' (-4). But no Arsenal for the next 2 for me then.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What was the impact of the final transfer window deals on Fantasy Football?

I thought I’d list a few of the key deals this week and assess how they may affect our plans. In addition, I’ll list some of those teams that got their transfer business done early and look more settled as a result.

Arsenal – Perez and Mustafi join.

Fantasy impact: Perez to threaten Giroud, Mustafi to go straight in. Sanchez unlikely to be fielded as a striker anymore.

Bournemouth – Wilshire in on loan.

Fantasy impact: Even if, and it’s a big if, he remains fit, he’s unlikely to affect possible Fantasy assets on the wing or attack, in particular Josh King.

Burnley – Hendrick and Defour in. Bamford on loan.

Fantasy impact: key players Heaton and Gray unaffected. Bamford will provide cover, as he has done and will always do in the Premier League until someone finally realises he’s just a championship level striker. Hendrick and Defour could help Burnley’s build up play and therefore help Gray to score.

Chelsea – Luis and Alonso in

Fantasy impact: This could herald the start of a 3-5-2 formation, with Alonson threatening one of Ivanovic or Azpilicueta. Luiz could provide cover in a 4 man back line, or be a staple part of a 3-5-2. One to monitor. One knock on affect of 3-5-2 could be either a move up front for Hazard, or more game time for Batashuayi.

Crystal Palace – Benteke and Remy in

Fantasy impact: Palace’s play is all about crossing to heads. Now as well as Dann they also have two actual real, proper strikers to aim at. Remy can also play on the wing or up front alongside Benteke. This transfer window in theory should mean more goals for Palace.

    Everton – Enner Valancia

Fantasy impact: Valencia provides competition for Lukaku but cold also be played in a support role, which could affect where Barkley plays. A situation to monitor.

Hull - David Marshall and Dieumerci Mbokani

Fantasy impact: And so the Jakupovic dream ends. Marshall’s recruitment is likely to leave Pickford of Sunderland as the only credible sub 4.5 goalkeeper selection. Meanwhile Mbokani bring s more competition up front. Could this be the end of Diomande as a credible budget striker option?

    Leicester – Islam Slimani

Fantasy impact: This record transfer from Lisbon will surely start. Can Leicester really spend £30m on a squad player. For Vardy owners rotation could loom large from now on, especially around Champions League games.

Liverpool – no last minute moves

Fantasy impact: It’s as you were for Liverpool, which means lots of square pegs in round holes as Firmino continues to fail as a striker, Sturridge looks uncomfortable on the wing and James Milner enjoys a nice cup of tea and a digestive at left back.

Man City – No last minute moves

Fantasy impact: Most of the business was already done. Hart and squad players finally leave on loan. No impact.

Man Utd – no last minute moves

Fantasy impact: Mourinho wisely went shopping early. Its as you were with Manchester United. No impact.

Middlesbrough – Calum Chambers and Adam Traore

Fantasy impact: Karanka likes to rotate and he’s brought in more bodies to do. The right back, centre back and wing roles now look like places to avoid.

    Southampton – Boufal

Fantasy impact: It remains to be seen how he will affect Saints play. In theory he could help their attack. Impact – possible rotation in attacking midfield roles.

    Stoke – Indi and Bony

Fantasy impact: This could change everything. Suddenly Stoke have a goal every other game striker on their books in Bony. He should start – why move from City’s comfortable bench to Stoke’s windswept one? If he can hit the ground running he could also boost the assist potential of the likes of Shaqiri, Arnautovic and Bojan. Indi looks like a good move to shore up their leaky defence.

    Sunderland - Ndong and Denayer

Fantasy impact: A strong squad, but neglible impact on their key draw Defoe. The biggest news from the north east was the Black Cats failure to sign a goalkeeper, leaving Pickford owners joyful.

Swansea – Transferring into the championship

Fantasy impact: With hardly any major business and key departures Swansea had a dire transfer window. Deadline day was typified by tumbleweeds. Fantasy impact looks to be a weak squad that will struggle as the season goes on.

    Spurs – Sissoko

Fantasy impact: Their gazumping of Sissoko from under Everton’s noses gives Spurs some much needed gumption in midfield. Sissoko can play central in midfield as well as in a more advanced midfield role. Good cover for Dembele with Champions League this season and some much needed competition.

Watford – no last minute deals of note.

Fantasy impact: with the likes of Kenedy and Mariappa joining they have more bodies, but neither are likely to impact on our sides.

West Brom – Chadli, Hal Robson Kanu, Nyom

Fantasy impact: Bless Tony Pulis, he does try to attack, honest. Chadli may just provide service to Rondon and Hal Robson Kanu could be a solid, if unspectacular budget buy.

    West Ham – Arbeloa

Fantasy impact: The impact of Arbeloa is mainly on Antonio. With the right back in the side Byram has competition in that role, which means Antonio is more likely to be fielded in his more natural position in midfield. Of all the transfer deals I think this could be one of the best if it allows Antonio to shine at just 7m.

I think a pretty key one is Sunderland not signing a goalkeeper and also not really signing any attackers! They are going to have to be really good defensively if they are going to stay up, so I expect regular parked bus and Pickford to be a decent choice now

Big question is who will be doing the aiming? Townsend is too selfish for one. In theory it should mean more goals , howevr we are talking about the side with by far the worst record in 2016

Check the crossing stats so far this season http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/team-stats/distribution/

The stats indicate that they have been relentless at crossing but haven't had anyone on the end of them.

In theory Benteke and co should prosper.

Townsend may be selfish - but the stats show that as a team Palace are far from it. They can't stop crossing. All we need now is to add Benteke and Remy's heads into the equation.

Cheers. Thought it would be useful to focus on a quick summary of the fantasy impact. 🙂

Alot of people are holding off wildcarding because of so many unknowns. But I think most issues are settled, with mainly Chelsea looking like a team that could radically change in terms of formation. The two manchester teams doing their business so early really helps us.

Why? You'd hardly want any of those signings and the good players you should be picking won't be harmed by them.

They are filler signings at best and not the sort that you will build your team around.

Agreed, Bony is proven in the premier league. Zaza could be like a less talented version of Costa, loves a yellow card. Could be a good foil for his teammates though

See above - I think the opposite. Pickford now only 4.0 goalkeeper, Amat looking secure as a 4.1 prospect. Antonio now a very real candidate for our midfields. Benteke set to prosper at Palace and in GWK 8 or so Bony becomes a great option for Stoke - but we have time to assess on that one.

chelsea looking the main issue - but wherever Hazard plays I'm sure he'll do well - can't see Conte deliberately trying to lessen the threat from his best player.

For the first time in forever I've managed to make a strong start and so don't feel such a strong need to wildcard early. If I hadn't I'd be wildcarding, but I'm happy to be a bit of a bore and wait a few weeks for now

For me Man C are the most troubling, we still dont really know how they will approach things once the chmpions league starts, and there are big names like Gundawotsit and Sane to play yet, plus Kompany. We no idea what level of rotation awaits

How will Arsenal line up now, possibly play 2 at the top. Perez could be a real gem if he nails down a spot.

Chelsea are generally defensively solid and with a lot of Terry/Azpi owners this situation is definitely worth monitoring for at least a few weeks. David Luiz could be a fantasy bargain with his goal threat.

Will Benteke and Remy line up together, can they even make a difference? Only time can tell.

The knock on effect of Enner Valenica on Lukaku and Barkley as mentioned needs time to be monitored.

How much game time will Slimani get and how will it affect Vardy/Musa?

Will Boufal effectively kill Redmonds fantasy prospects as a cheap Oop enabler?

Can Bony get the form he had at Swansea back. Or who is the best mid price striker between Bony and Benteke?

On top of this if we do wildcard how can we get Aguero back?

At the minute there are just too many unknowns to go headfirst into a wildcard.

Mustafi won't start immediately despite having prior experience. One more match for Holding and Mustafi will start I think.

Jakupovic might still start since they have been doing well thus far especially Jaku's great saves. Marshall might be a backup only but just guessing.

Koeman has a plenty of midfield options now. Deulofeu is more likely to be benched for sure. Barkley should be safe but E Valencia is a loanee so might not start regularly I guess.

Robson Kanu is very cheap. Hopefully an alternative to free up more funds if he start but with Rondon starting, unless Pulis plays a 442 with Berahino benched regularly.

Berahino being benched is a highly likely possibility which I anticipate. Whether Rondon will be benched to start Robson-Kanu (4-2-3-1) is something I cannot really tell, or both starts in a 4-4-2 or one of them as an attacking winger/CAM.

I'm still considering it. Thing about the pre xmas wildcard is I can't think of another time I'd use it. Good team management should see me through.

Its all about - do I wildcard to get Aguero out or wildcard to get him back in. Also if Aguero and Gray are banned coupled with my lack of Arsenal I'd be looking at a hit this week.

Not sure. Will know more later today.

I am currently firmly in the wc to get aguero back camp. Rank will probably take a hit in short term but long term looks a no brainer with arsenal and pool fixtures turn after gw7 break.

Ideally i would as that could be the decider, however waiting nearly a week before wildcarding would be less than ideal. So may have to pull the plug on Aguero news

Yep, I agree - its more about Aguero than Gray.

Thing is with Gray - do I want him long term and also is Hull actually a tough fixture? Arguably Hull have shown they can be very stubborn and Burnley's attacking stats are woeful. Think Benteke/Bony/Defoe all over more for a small price increase.

The end of the 6.5 options is nigh.

Chadili and Bony will be in ALL our teams at some point, will monitor both closely especially Chadilli as he has a decent PPG.

Bony and Benteke the two most interesting fantasy prospects for me. Back at clubs similar to the ones they thrived at in the past. Both look good value.

Perez will NOT threaten Giroud, more of a threat to Ramsey

Welbeck took Giroud's position when he came back though. He went on a 15 game goal drought. I think there's a very good chance he could take Giroud's position tbh.

          Possibly,

Xhaka and Cazorla/Ramsey in the middle
Perez on the left, Ozil in the middle, Sanchez on the right.
          Giroud up front

So its Walcott who misses out? That would make it easier from a Fantasy point of view. Giroud can be useful as a Fantasy asset on his day.

That's how I'm guessing. Either that or Perez takes Giroud's striker position and Walcott remains on the wing. Will just have to wait and see. Maybe Wenger will go old school and play two up front.

Really interesting Jonty, thanks for the summary.

      My two main conclusions:

      1) Antonio looks really interesting on paper with Arbeola coming at right back and West Ham's fixtures;

      2) The likes of Benteke and Bony available at around 7.5 in clubs where they should score a lot means

      a) that I am not considering any 6.5 forward anymore because they offer less than them,

      b) that I am considering going without Ibra and captaining Kun 85% of the time. The 4 millions freed by this difficult decision gives you the possibility to have a much more balanced team, especially in midfield. Without Ibra (can not see myself going without Kun), you can have Hazard - Ozil - Firmino - Antonio instead of two of them and one combo of 5.5 + 7.5 midfield. However, I am not sure to have the mental strength to go without a captain material owned by 57% of the players. This early decision might define a season. Would appreciate to have your view on this part 😉

Once again, very goind points raised in your post!

One of the biggest impacts is the gap between the 6.5 and 9/10 million strikers has been bridged somewhat by the likes of Zaza; Bony; Benteke; Slimani

    WC Draft.

    Foster (Pickford)
    Valencia/Shaw Baines Pieters (Collins Amat)
    Hazard Ozil Antonio Sterling (Capoue)
    Zlatan Lukaku Benteke

Aguero plan: Sterling to 4.5 mid, promote Capoue to 4th mid just in time for Watfords kind fixtures. Lukaku to Aguero.

    Thoughts?

Been banging that drum for a few days. Most have a 5.5 as their 4th mid and I reckon Capoue will outscore most in that bracket.

This allows me to play a 7.5 striker alongside Kubra. I too will be keeping a close eye on Bony, but happy to go with Benteke initially.

I'm in the same boat. Capoue appeals to me more than any other mid below 6m.

My wildcard is similar I just can't decide on that 3rd spot between:

          Lamela (started strong)
Antonio (beast when back in midfield)
Firmino (Livepool fixtures turn and can score VS anyone)

Currently on Firmink but to the detriment of my defensive cover of injuries occur

I had the exact same dilemma!

Was either Firmino and 4.5 def or Antonio and Baines, West Ham signing a Rb decided t for me!

Im currently on Firm and then have two 4m defenders which is risky.

Feels like last piece of the jigsaw. 10 days to decide / will probably all fall apart with some injuries over the internationals

Hmm, I need Aguero to fall to 12.8 for that plan to work myself. Maybe 12.9

So, on a wildcard, playing around with this:

    Foster (Jakupovic)
    Terry Shaw Stones (Evans Kingsley)
    Sanchez Ozil Hazard Sterling (Capoue)
    Lukaku Bony Benteke

    0m ITB.

Definitely not done / sold on this. Not sure on Jakupovic, Terry, forwards especially.

Also, need to keep a route back to Aguero somehow.

What do you think of it as a first draft?

Going without the most owned player in the game is scary.
Not sold on Terry, if Conte plays 3 at the back one of Terry, Zouma, Cahill, Luiz will drop to the bench.

      EVE defender over Stones IMO.

Sanchez + Ozil feels like overkill to me. I'd pick one but am guessing one will be transferred out to make room for Kun so it works I guess.

Maybe Jaku > the 4.0M SUN goalie?

      1. WHY ALWAYS MESUT?

Yup that's the likeliest route to Kun. Plus, those fixtures are tempting. I find Ozil amazing value for money and Sanchez is the second best player to have after Kun IMO.

I'll be getting in Pickford, why not Stones?

    Thoughts on Everton:

Valencia enters the team with more fantasy points than all of our strikers combined (a whopping 8 points). Sad, that. Lukaku can't buy a goal at this point. Frustrated, no confidence, wanted away and didn't get it. A lot of managers are buying him right now -- an out of form striker with good fixtures. Just a caveat. I really do hope he starts producing, but I'm not bringing him in just yet.

For me, the attacking points are coming out of the midfield. However inconsistent Barkley has been in the past, Evertonians are hoping he finds solid ground under Koeman and, as he matures, really becomes the workhorse in the midfield that we can rely on game in and game out. He certainly works hard. Mirallas has looked good as well, tricky, pacy, likes to come in and very end-product driven, still doesn't pass though. Bolasie needs to get in sync with the rest of the team but always has a shot on him. Deulofeu was a failed experiment up front but I wouldn't write him off as Koeman thinks very highly of him. The midfield needs to learn how not to ball-hog though. We were very guilty of this last weekend, hence, we only scored because of the dodgy penalty.

Hope things change for Lukaku and he finds some form, or someone up front starts producing but Koeman needs the guts to try Valencia, or even Kone. That would shake Lukaku up a bit. Maybe going home and seeing his father will set his mind right over this break.

At least we haven't lost yet. Defense has looked alright, our first CS last weekend. Williams and Jags look strong together, albeit a bit slow on old legs. Funes-Mori will probably be coming off the bench if needed. Reliable keeper. Coleman will be an improvement when he's fit, both attacking and defensively. Baines is aging but is always dangerous going forward and lots of set-plays in his locker, he seems to be the prime suspect at the back...especially with all of the penalties that have been given so far. I think he will stay on pens for the time being. If not, it would be Barkley, Lukaku or Mirallas. Hopefully Barkley.

Look for Barkley, Baines and Mirallas in the attacking points over this good spell of matches. CSs incoming. Lukaku off the boil and Valencia to super sub and score. We need to take points from this good set of fixtures. Here's hoping we can keep our current position of 4th in the table. COYB!

Barkley doesn't have great stats but he grabs big chances really well by watching Everton's matches. Albeit that, Mirallas is also one to watch out for. Not too sure who will score more points among these two assuming Lukaku is on a cold front.

I do agree that CS can be expected since Williams is on board which is a big plus. Might be better than getting the similar priced Stones but have some reservations on that at the moment. Otherwise, great insights, largely agree!

Great post. You can give is a strange, chaotic player, but very few teams have an attacking run of fixtures this good all season, so I think he is worth a gamble. Barkley is in my team and is going nowhere.

Imo he's not ready yet and could even even lose his starting spot and be used as a sub if Mosman sees Deulofeu as a better selection. Time will tell but it's Mirallas and Barkley for me.

Thanks! Yeah, we looked ok on paper, but did you get a chance to watch it or see the highlights. Very frustrated throughout. Stats aren't everything.

I really hope he gets in the points, but smth needs to change. Hopefully its Valencia or this international break.

          Nice Read !
Will Williams still be the BAPS monster like he was at Swansea ?
Funds are tight atm and can't Afford Baines. And one more thing- Barkley or Mirallas ? Currently leaning towards Mirallas.

Cheers! I think Williams will be in the baps but not nearly as much as last year at SWA which can be seen by the CS last week against STO and him with no bonus points to be seen.

For the other question, Barkley by far but if you can't afford him then Mirallas is a second option.

          Lukaku in 143 minutes:
          - 17 pen area touches
          - 5 shots in the box from 6 total (2 on target)

            and yet..

            Lukaku in 143 minutes:
            - 0 goals
            - 0 assists
            - only 1 team goal from open play while he has been on the pitch (Mirallas, Barkley assist WBA, gorgeous goal btw)

Stats aren't everything, mate. Did you get a chance to watch the matches, or at least the highlights? I find it much better than simply looking at numbers. He cut a frustrated mess.

After WC, this is my team with 3.3m ITB.

        Foster, Heaton
        Valencia, Williams, Evans, Amat, (4m)
        Hazard, Ozil, Lamela, Sterling, Capoue
        Ibra, Lukaku, Diomande.

Leaving the 3.3m ITB so that i can easily bring back Kun Later on.

Just wondering, should i bring in Antonio, if yes, who should i replace with?

Antonio instead of Lamela for me.

Downgrade 1 keeper to Pickford and upgrade 4.0 def.

Even with that money in the bank someone will still need downgraded to fund Aguero.

Had toyed with having Capoue and Diamonde myself but now thinks it's a bad idea, lots of mid priced striker options that could fire and Diamondes place in he starting XI could be under threat.

positives on david luiz in FF terms are potential oop and the fact that he is a deadball specialist, which Chelsea don't have too many of. Haz is going to win a lot of free kicks on the edge of the box ( a little further out would probably suit Luiz) and i think if David is in the pitch he will take them.

With two new premium defenders added: Mustafi (ARS) at £6m & Luiz (CHE) at £6m, who offers the best value?

in 12/13 Luiz scored 122 points over the season, with 14 clean sheets. Highly doubtful he will be on free kicks in a more disciplined Conte side, so best sourse of points will be clean sheets.

Mustafi has scored 6 goals over 2 seasons with Valencia. Can he build on this?

Are there better options within their own teams and lower price points?

Fancy playing W/C for Aguero and Gray potential bans – but seems a waste now as I’ve missed out on a lot of prices rises earlier in the week, so instead thinking of a -4 hit.

        Curret (3-4-3)
        Hazard / Sterling / Lamela / Redmond / (Kante)
        Aguero / Ibra / Gray

Thinking of riding out whatever ban Gray gets and benching him to play 3-5-2

        Hazard / Sterling / Lamela / Redmond / Ozil
        Costa / Ibra / (Gray)

Easy to get Aguero back with 2FT in 2 GW time. Okay, or should I wildcard?
