Philippe Coutinho may have settled an argument. Sergio Aguero is scaring us, Bob Bradley is already off our Christmas list but we can’t get enough of Antonio Conte. Here’s all the stuff and nonsense gathered from Gameweek 9…

Aguero has put the frighteners on us…
Okay, so now we’re worried.

Despite nagging doubts, we had the confidence that Pep would hand Aguero a recall but, I for one was expecting a very different reaction from the man himself.

While Aguero’s listless display was symptomatic of City’s first half malaise, there’s no doubt that Sunday’s showing dented our confidence further.

It seems unfeasible that we should consider dropping a fit Sergio Aguero, particularly with the fixture list about to smile on Guardiola’s City.

But, with just a single goal in five Premier League appearances, it’s difficult to argue against claims that Aguero is now failing to offer value.

We’ve always had faith in the City man as a captain option – that ensured that, however much the FPL inflated his price tag, he would always offer the potential returns to justify it.

Right now, it’s debatable just how many of us would throw the armband his way ahead of a Gameweek 10 trip to West Brom – an opponent that will raise their game and revel in City’s apparent loss of confidence.

If we’re not looking to Aguero for double points, the thirteen million starts to look very very expensive.

Coutinho is close to ending the argument…
Another mesmeric display. Another goal.

Philippe Coutinho is getting close to ending all the chatter on Liverpool’s best midfield option and giving us little option but to tow the line and acquire his services.

There’s a strong argument for doubling with Roberto Firmino – certainly the pair appear to offer a tempting combination of goals and assists – a blend that drowns out the claims of Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane.

Mane scored and assisted in Saturday’s game but was again denied the maximum bonus – he’s scored four goals and laid on two assists but has just four bonus points to his name.

With Coutinho and Firmino sharing goals and assists and supplying flurries of key passes, Mane’s propensity to take players on and lose possession is punishing his Bonus Point System tally.

Cazorla is key to Arsenal cutting edge…
Predictably, Arsenal’s attacking impetus hit the buffers, just as hordes of FPL managers jumped on Theo Walcott’s accelerating bandwagon.

We’ve been here before . There seems to have been countless Emirates encounters where Arsene Wenger’s side have struggled to break down teams, bereft of an effective plan B.

The fact is, with Santi Cazorla on the pitch, their plan A is so much more likely to deliver the goods.

Walcott and Alexis Sanchez were forced to rely on half chances against Middelsbrough, butting into a mass defence that strangled Arsenal’s best efforts.

Cazorla is the key master that can often unlock such a strategy – we’ve already witinessed it this season with his two assists in the Gameweek 3 in the win over Southampton.

Many will hold Sanchez and Walcott ahead of the trip to Sunderland but Cazorla’s availability could be key to repaying such faith.

We’ve fallen out with Bradley already…
We welcomed his false nine that led to Gylfi Sigurdssson’s Gameweek 8 goal at the Emirates but, a week on, we’ve now changed our opinion on Bob Bradley.

The American reacted to that first defeat with five changes, ousting budget darlings Jordi Amat and Leroy Fer to the bench.

It remains to be seen if this knee jerk reaction is permanent but, in Amat’s case, the argument for his return seems pretty flimsy given the Swans’ clean sheet against Watford.

…but we’re taking a shine to Conte…
Down in West London, Antonio Conte is shaping up to be earn hero status.

Following a Gameweek 6 humbling at the hands of Arsenal, the Italian reshaped his Chelsea side and has since maximised their Fantasy potential.

In Marcos Alonso, he’s given us a wing-back who gets forward to shoot and assists.

He’s somehow getting goals and assists out of N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic.

But, best of all, he may have just revived Eden Hazard’s fortunes to return the Belgian to our radars, just as we consider the possibility of flushing funds from our attacks.

Hazard now has four goals in four starts for club and country and, in the new Chelsea shape, appears to be bombing on with reckless abandon, free of all defensive duties.

The Blues run of three wins with nine goals scored without conceding will now be tested by some rigorous fixtures. Come through that spell and Hazard will drop on our laps for Christmas.

We’ve got Costa all wrong….
We were laying odds on Costa conveniently earning a fifth booking against United – manufacturing an absence against West Ham United for Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie.

But Costa is clearly a changed man.

He’s not only earning us unlikely bonus points but he’s now navigated three Premier League matches without a yellow card.

His personal best is six league outings – if he makes that we all need to buy him by way of honouring the achievement.

Son is not the answer….
Rested at the Hawthorns in Gameweek 9, Son Heung-min was restored against Bournemouth but lasted only an hour, mustering just a single shot with three touches in the box.

Having scored just four in five matches in all competitions, it’s clear that, despite Son’s sparkle, Spurs without Harry Kane still lack the means to hurt opponents.

His return, mooted for the Gameweek 11 north London derby with Arsenal, will cast doubt on Son’s role.

Moussa Sissoko’s seemingly inevitable suspension opens up the gap for Son to remain in the starting XI but we have to question how Mauricio Pochettino will deploy him.

The Alli and Kane double act will surely be revived, leaving Son battling for a start and perhaps in a flank role that will reduce his output.

Karanka needs to build around the Traore’s pace…
Snapped up from relegated Aston Villa having been underused, Aitor Karanka turned to Adama Traore’s blistering pace to drive Middlesbrough’s counter attacks at the Emirates.

It’s a tactic that should have won them three points.

Traore terrorised the Gunners’ defence and saw him fire two of his own efforts on target, only to be denied by Petr Cech’s heroics.

Now the challenge for Karanka is to build his side’s attacking ploys around the winger in the long-term and at the Riverside.

If he can achieve that, we may just have have found another 4.8 prospect.

Heaton is perhaps the only essential…
If Burnley preserve their top-flight status, they will owe a huge debt to their skipper.

We started the season anticipating that Tom Heaton would reward our faith by replicating his 2014/15 form which saw him ranked second, despite suffering relegation; it turns out he may surpass it.

Another seven saves in the win over Everton saw him move to 47, that’s 13 more than any other keeper. Heaton has now returned 12 points from saves alone, ensuring that he goes on presenting outstanding value for his 4.6 price tag.

With so many areas of our squad seemingly in flux, it’s hard to deny Heaton as our season keeper.

Defoe doesn’t fancy another rescue act…
Having declared that Sunderland have moved “backwards” under David Moyes, it’s safe to say that confidence is hardly flowing through Jermain Defoe at present.

With just a single goal in five Premier League outings, his current form has dipped alarmingly to spark FPL sales.

Forthcoming match-ups with Bournemouth and Hull City may just lend him a stay of execution but, a further blank against Arsenal will likely trigger further trades and a slide in price.

The Gunners have six clean sheets in seven in all competitions; it doesn’t look good.

Redmond is worth another look…
He’s buzzed all season, producing performances and winning plaudits that belied a humble FPL output.

Now, with back-to-back goals, Redmond has blinked on the radar once again, with his modest 5.9 price point putting us on alert.

There are two major caveats.

Southampton’s fixtures are somewhat abhorrent. While the Saints have form, St Mary’s meetings with Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton will test and potentially blunt their cutting edge.

Secondly, Sofiane Boufal is a headache – both for us and Claude Puel.

Emerging from the bench at the Etihad with Dusan Tadic making way, we should not expect the Serb to be under threat.

Instead Puel will have to find another solution to work his record signing into the Saints attack and that could see Redmond’s minutes under threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Giving Ibra two more weeks. The way I see it, I've lost out on 20 points and price drops/rises already.

Ibra has Burnley at home (Burnley terrible away and Utd simply have to win) and Swansea away (Swans have been conceding goals very easily at home).

No point getting rid now only to see him score a few. Lets hope he can pay me back!

    Morning from Shanghai!

I think I'm actually happy with my team this week for once, what ye reckon:

    Lloris (Pickford)
Bellerin / Holebas / Smith (Evans, Amat)
Payet / Walcott / Firmino / Arnautovic (Capoue)
    Lukaku / Deeney(C) / Aguero

    GK - Heaton (Pickford)

DEF - Koscienly, Williams, Clyne (Friend, Amat)

MID - Capoue, Sanchez, Sterling, Antonio(Fletcher)

    FOR - Lukaku, Aguero, Benteke

Antonio to Lallana this week. Next week Capoue to Redmond and Williams to Adam Smith.

    Good morning DZ.

I see a lot of love for Sigurdsson all of a sudden.
I haven't watched many Swansea games under Bradley.. is there something I should know?

1 goal, 1 assist so far and still a few weeks before fixtures improve.

A great option at any price but a real bargain now. Very talented attacking mid on pens, frees and corners. Fixtures not so bad and look sweeter from GW15 to 20, the Christmas rush.

Bradley doesn't suffer fools. None of the 'We conceded 3 to a good attacking Arsenal team sure we'll put out the same team again' mallarkey. 5 changes and a CS v Watford. Might be difficult to predict his 11 for the next few weeks but Sigurdsson is surely nailed on. He's trying to improve their slack defence and the likes of Mawson, Kingsley and Van der Hoorn are worth monitoring for nailed-onness. Particularly Mawson. Albeit at at a lower level, 13 goals in 93 games in the past two seasons for a centre back is lovely. Just lovely 🙂

Thoughts on this lot please, whilst we're nice and dead zoney:

    Foster (MCI)
Friend (BOU) Bellerin (sun) Williams (WHU)
Capoue (HUL) Sanchez (sun) Walcott (sun) Coutinho (cry)
Stuani (BOU) Aguero (wba) Lukaku (WHU)

Heaton (mun) Lovren (cry) Antonio (eve) Amat (stk)

    Some options:
    1) Antonio > Shaqiri (fixtures, form but possibly chasing points)
    2) Antonio & Amat > Shaquiri & Holebas (-4)
    3) Antonio & Stuani > Shaquiri & Deeney (-4)
    4) Aguero & Antonio > Costa & KDB / Hazard (-4 and totally radical)

All a bit of advice would be appreciated. A few days ago I was dead set on tripling up on the Liverpool midfield (Coutinho, Mane and Firmino) but have decided against that for now. Various reasons for this, BPS, spreading risk, money to spend elsewhere were the top 3 though

I’m generally quite happy with the team but do need to make some changes, primarily to upgrade the strikeforce. In order to do that effectively I need to take some money out of midfield. In this case that means Sanchez

So my plan is to remove Sanchez and Benteke and bring in Walcott and Lukaku. I want to follow that up over the coming weeks by then upgrading Son to Alli and replace Deeney with Austin (just in time for when there fixtures turn). I’ve got 2 FT this week so my question is do I pull the trigger this week on the first 2 or hold off till after the Sunderland game?

I just know that if I switch Arsenal mf then the one I took out will score.

    Heaton – Pickford
    Kos – Vertoghen – Holebas – Smith – Amat
    Sanchez – Firmino – Coutinho – Son – Hojberg
    Aguero – Deeney - Benteke

Similar to my team. Have you considered Kun and tekkers to Costa and Lukaku? Big move I know.

All weekend I was throwing around the idea of Kun vs Sanchez, who would I prefer to lose currently.
I went with Sanchez to Walcott as I didn't see the points difference being too bad considering the 8mil to 11.3

Kun has some great fixtures coming up, so decided to keep him.

I think your plan is spot on - and very very similar to mine.

Here's my team atm fellas. Just want some learned advice. It involves either saving my ft or selling Aguero for a hit.

    Foster
    Bellerin, Holebas, Pieters
    Sanchez, Firmino, Walcott (vc), Allen
    Aguero, Costa, Lukaku (c)

    Jaku, Smith, Capoue, Amat

I feel this team is gtg for this week but I'm looking at Aguero & if I was going to sell any of my forwards it would be him. But if I did sell him I would downgrade to Deeney & then bring in Austin the following week & bring in KDB, Mane or Coutinho for Capoue. However this would create a massive benching headache as Allen deserves to be playing in the 11. Alternatively he would be the ideal auto sub for possible rotation of the other attackers. Thoughts & thanks.

Buying any player this early for just 1 week is a bad move, wasted transfer. Aguero out for a hit is also quite mad, but feel free to ease him out without a hit. I agree with the rest though, I'm a fan of having a 1st bencher that you're actually willing to play, and I'm not scared of playing someone like Allen with a good fixture over a more expensive player during their tough ones.

Mind taking a look at this crap?

    Firmino, Walcott, ANTONIO, SNODGRASS, Capoue
    Luka, Kun, IBRA

    2 FTs, 0.3 itb.

    Considering
    1) Ibra, Antonio, Snodgrass -> Austin, Coutinho, Sterling (-4)
    2) Antonio, Snodgrass, Mustafi -> Redmond, Coutinho, Pieters (-4)
    3) One of the above, but spread over two weeks to avoid the hit.

Definitely want to sell Antonio. Can be convinced about keeping others.

I could do just Antonio + Snodgrass -> Coutinho + De Roon (and play Capoue vs Hull this week).

And then sort out Ibra/Mustafi downgrade + Capoue upgrade next couple of weeks.

Good read, thanks. Rotation's going to be tough to predict in the next few weeks, and the Christmas schedule is not too far either. A crazy option would be to have Iheanacho and Aguero. One of those 2 FWDs should be involved in City goals right?

      In my opinion:

Strategy 1: Switch Aguero out now, be willing to reverse course if necessary - reasonable.
Strategy 2: Hold till the international break, accept a price fall or two, ensure you have 2FTs available and review then - reasonable.
Strategy 3: Insist that nothing has changed and it's the same old Aguero, the FPL essential and default captain. This one is known as the ostrich strategy.

Nothing to say that ostriches won't win this race, of course, they are fast birds. 😕

    Foster
    Stones, Holebas, Koscielny (Amat, PVA)
    Firmino, Sanchez, Walcott, Capoue (Snoddy)
    Kun, Kaku, Deeney (c)

1 FT, 0.4 itb. Worried about my bench. Stones might be dropped/ rested? If so, I won't have any cover. PVA (since he is flagged) to Pieters? Offloading PVA and Stones is my plan anyway.

Haven't been on this site for weeks, last time on every man and his dog wanted Aguero essential this essential that now everyone wants to ditch him if he penalty goes in last week this isn't even a consideration. Hazard was essential after week 2 then you all ditch him, same with Ibra very very reactive with little faith

I agree only good sell was Ibra in my opinion Hazard is class in a class side even with a few weeks dip was always going to score heavily considering history says itself even if you do consider last season. Im not trying to bag anyone out just trying to raise the issue that maybe too much time is spent overthinking it all and relying on nitty gritty stats that don't tell the full story. Maybe sometimes the sheep mentality kicks in with price changes so fast and many selling that people feel their hand is forced.

Yea situations matter too just I guess i'm seeing this from a different perspective. Being in Australia and playing the AFL (Australian Football League) fantasy although very different in it's own right has always been a mantra of stick to your guns. Basically you have picked Aguero and many wildcarded just to get him back in and ignoring all other factors and avoiding overthinking hes almost a sure thing for Golden boot and personally could seem him ecplising 30 in a season provided no injuries. I warrant not giving him the armband until form recovers but what do you plan to do after he scores in back to back games and you dont have him 13.1 very hard to get back in without a hit

            1. Christina.
              • 15 Years
              9 years, 2 months ago

You also need to consider the alternatives though. If he keeps on getting limited minutes & low scores while the alternatives to well might warrant a -4.

For example Deeney/Ighalo(HULL/livp/LEIC) or Wilson(midb/SUN/stoke) might do very well.

That's because you have limited trades in AFL dreamteam/supercoach so you have no choice but to stick to your guns. It's a completely different game and I promise you that as a high achiever in both fantasy games, if you stick with an AFL fantasy mantra in FPL, you're going to have a bad time.

The secret is a good rotation isn't it? The cheaper defenders can keep pace comfortably if you use them right, Pieters has been doing fine for me and I wouldn't swap him for anyone over the next 5 games. When Stoke's fixtures suffer there is a natural switch to Swansea.

Holebas has attack threat and CS possibilities and is a good rotation option. Watford rotate perfectly with Bournemouth (Smith) and both teams are solid at home. Smith has some assist threat too.

So, Pieters (to Swansea defender 15), Smith, Holebas and you have 2 slots covered for 13.7m.

Of the premiums, Clyne immediately, Alonso or Luiz from GW15, VVD or Soares from GW14 all look preferable to Walker & Koscielny to me. And Valencia will get his fair share, I wouldn't be rushing to get rid myself.

Add in 2 of those and you can play 4-4-2 which looks the ideal structure right now. Or add one and a cheapie to cover weakness in the rotation for 3-4-3 or 3-5-2.

That's what I'd do if wildcarding.

          1. Brap.
            • 9 Years
            9 years, 2 months ago

Analysis from the "if I was wildcarding" pov is rather low-hanging fruit though, isn't it.

The fact is Kosc and Walker are blue chip Gs. Clyne has blanked 7 out of 9 GWs.

The conclusion I am NOT coming to is that Kosc and Walker are overpriced and Clyne is worth investment as a "premium" defender.

No one is transferring them out for Clyne.

Liverpool have great fixtures from now on, sure, but Clyne has to beat Firm, Cout, Mané, Lallana, Milner (pens) and Lovren (had a great header v WBA) for bonus points.

But but but what about clean sheets? When Klopp sees a goal conceded from an embarrassing defensive lapse, what does he do? Says he has absolutely no problem with conceding it and oh yeah it made the end of the game exciting!

Finally, if you had a 6.1 mid scoring 40-odd points and talked up how a 5.5 mid who blanks 7 out of 9 as a much better investment you'd look like a fool.

Sorry but your comments on Walker are rubbish and just fear mongering.

He is probably one of the most nailed on premo defenders one could have. Yes he may have a rest at some point like most players playing a long season, but you keep harping on that he's a rotation risk like he could miss every other game. This is rubbish and completely unfounded.

Walker is one of the best premo defenders money can buy. Even at his current price. He's more likely to miss games due to an injury than rotation.

Still undecided LR. If I make the Kone to Holebas move, can't do Son to Theo next week for free if they change in prices. But then Theo's next two games aren't ideal. Decisions, Decisions..
