All Out Attack (AOA) is the poor relation in the Fantasy Premier League chip family. But are we doing this much maligned potential source of extra points a disservice. Yes, I know Gameweek 38 is a long way off, but could it be that the best way to make use of this runt of the chip litter is to save it for this final fixture?

Let’s look at the reasons for an eleventh hour deployment of this chip, which allows managers to field a total of eight midfielders and forwards and just two defenders.

Goal Potential

SeasonAverage Goal per GWGame Week 38 Total Goals
11/1228.0529
12/1329.9736
13/1427.6828
14/1525.6629
15/1627.0035

So the stats indicate there have been more goals scored in the final fixture than in Gameweek average in each of the last five seasons. Playing the AOA chip in Gameweek 38 with five midfielders and three strikers would therefore boost goal potential and points.

Clean Sheet potential

SeasonAverage Clean Sheet per GWClean Sheets GW38
11/125.364
12/135.154
13/146.14
14/155.897
15/165.652

The indicates that there is less clean sheets on average in season finale than the average Gameweek in four out of the last five seasons. Playing the AOA chip in Gameweek 38 with just two defenders would minimize lost clean sheets, the most important point scoring attribute in defenders.

Conclusion

The statistics alone prove that attacking points are higher and defending points lower in Gameweek 38 each year, making it ideal for AOA chip utilisation.

There can be many reasons for this trend, with rotation and the introduction of young players from teams who cannot move in the table regardless of the result.

In addition, players minds can start to wander towards holidays and summer international football tournaments during this fixture. Fatigue can also be a factor among those who have played many matches, with tired legs and heads producing the sort of mistakes strikers can prosper from.

So think about the missed opportunity that the season finale presents when you decide Joe Allan and Etienne Capoue can outscore your budget defender on a cold February evening.

Shame I've already used mine. Looks a viable tactic.

De Gea looks like he wished he'd done that instead of fielding Smalling in a three man defence back in last season's GWK 38. 😉

Don't think it's a good idea as often players are rested for the last match. If one of your front 8 is rested then the chip is wasted.

It's not a useful chip unless you have defensive injuries.

How are we going to get thes young players in in time right after a double gameweek?
Interesting research but I think the AOA is best saved for a week where your defence is facing suspension or injury and you only have 2 defenders to play

I don't think the article advises to bring in young players; it advises to play 8 forwards in the final week.

It also doesn't affect being able to use when your defence is missing players. If you are at a GW where you have 2 defenders then you can play it but, if this doesn't happen then might be worth playing it in the final GW rather than a random week where you think your 5th midfielder will outscore a defender. For example, last year I never played my AOA chip so, knowing more goals scored might have tempted me to play it in the final week!

Also a little gutted that I've used mine - would be quite a good last gameweek effort to maximise points.

I think that a WC in GW 35/36 to have 8 playable attackers, BB GW37, then AOA GW38 could work well.

Though I've used my AOA chip (luckily got Capoue's 10pts vs Man Utd in GW5).

This was also posted last season and its a good point. However, with rotation you will be very lucky if all 8 attackers start in that gw.

Shame this article didn't come out sooner. Used my AOA ages ago 🙁

Personally i like downgrading a premium defender (when the time is right) and taking a one wek punt on bringing in a quality 8th attacker. It's worked the last 2 seasons,
Plus do well to get to gw38 without having to use it due to random defensive injuries

      It's the route I'm going.

Largely because of value gained within the squad allowing a better fifth midfielder and also because it doesn't matter if your squad balance is askew in GW38 as the season is over.

Nice analysis. Will use it in GW38 now.

I did this last year, and it worked a treat, as I got the only 2 Clean Sheets! (absolute luck and no skill whatsoever!)
After WCing in GW 36 and BB in GW 37, it certainly helped me a late push up the Rankings.

The problem with this is that more goals probably means more defender goals too.

I didn't even use my AOA last year. Contemplated using it in gw38, but it would have actually cost me points, if memory serves.
I'll see what the fixtures look like in gw38, but I wont just play the chip blindly. I'll just let it go to waste again if I don't see a compelling reason to use it.

The way the wing backs are involved at the moment makes the chip more useless than ever tactically - use it purely for a busted defence as opposed to any attacking plan for me.

Good stuff and worth a thought.

Last year during one of the blanks or end of season rotation fixtures (I forget which, making this post slightly pointless) I was in a situation where I only had two playing defs and AoA allowed me to save a transfer and still field 11

Wrong tense. "Would have". I burned it when Leicester benched Mahrez in GW9 and therefore totally wasted it.

To be honest I have actually already wasted my aoa chip and it wasn't even because of a defensive injury crisis 🙂 . I think the aoa gw38 is a interesting concept from a probability point of view although I agree difficult to implement depending on rotation. I think it would definitely add fun to gw38 especially to add more differentials if you hunting ml rival with a similar lineup.

AOA had been good in previous seasons

This season AOA is just really bad because defence is where the points are

Rotation could be a problem and GW37-38 are more unpredictable than usual.

Ref the GW38 AOA Chip Strategy, i used my AOA chp late last year. Ended up with a 4-4-2 formation. There's typically a lot of absentees late in the season. Especially as the article suggest young/fringe players get more playtime

It's an interesting idea but what were the total goals scored in the other gameweeks? Just because GW38 tends to be above average for goals scored, is it actually GW38 that is the most above average gameweek?

You could imagine that the reason behind GW38 being above average for goals scored is multifactorial: reasons as mentioned in the article but also teams making that last push to avoid relegation, get Europa/Champions league spots, and likely many other reasons: I don't believe fatigue would be much of a reason though.

Tried this last season and had people like Townsend troll me with no points in a 5-1 win. Can work but maybe my choices let me down last year.

      Thanks for this, decent analysis.

In general, and this season in particular, it appears that the early season is when defences are not set, so using an aoa chip in the first 5-6 gameweeks would have been a good tactical decision, maybe even set up for it in gw1.

But if you miss that boat (I did), then gw38 is a better bet than anything in, unless injuries enforce it.

last year i bought in giroud for GW 38 but dint captain him, went to 2nd place in my ML only because of captaincy decision. I can use AOA chip this time and punt on sturridge.
