Two four-nil thrashings and a historic farewell ensured that this was no ordinary Sunday, as Phillipe Coutinho punished double Gameweek investment and Harry Kane earned the final Spurs goal at White Hart Lane. Here’s the Stock Check…

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We were braced for a single fixture asset to explode points over Double Gameweek 37 and it is Philippe Coutinho who appears to have accepted the role.

Sold by over 221,000 Fantasy Premier League managers over the last two Gameweeks, Coutinho stepped up to produce his biggest points haul of the campaign in the 4-0 rout of West Ham, courtesy of two goals and an assist.

It was the first time that the Brazilian has been involved in three goals in a single Premier League match, arriving having taken up a new position in a changed Liverpool’s formation.

Deployed in a central midfield role, with Adam Lallana recalled to provide the point of a diamond system, Coutinho nonetheless capitalised on a lethargic West Ham display.

He was a sparkling influence throughout, recording six efforts on goal, while his assist was one of six chances he created.

Liverpool will face relegated Middlesbrough in Gameweek 38 and, with goal difference potentially a crucial factor in deciding the final top four, we have to believe that there will be further profit available for Coutinho.

That is already prompting FPL managers into a returning to the 8.4 priced asset as a final day option. Among the top ranks – who will have doubtless cleared the decks for double Gameweek assets – he will be an unlikely differential, even with his 18.8% ownership on the rise.

Daniel Sturridge
But Sturridge could represent the ultimate Gameweek 38 gamble.

He returned to the starting line-up to lead Liverpool’s attack alongside Divock Origi and set Jurgen Klopp’s side on their way with a smartly taken opening goal.

With four attempts in total, three from inside the box, Sturridge looked lively enough to make a claim to retain his starting role for Boro’s visit.

He will go into that fixture in just 36,000 (0.8%) of squads, although a hefty 9.6 price tag will doubtless prove a major obstacle, preventing that number increasing markedly.

The Liverpool Defence
Jurgen Klopp’s backline has, statistically at least, ranked among the top defences this season without offering the assurance of clean sheets.

Prior to Gamweweek 33 they boasted just 7 shut-outs, but four in five outings since has suddenly thrust them into consideration for the final day.

They could hardly be treated to a more favourable fixture – Middlesbrough arrive at Anfield without motivation and with ten away goals all season.

Centre-back Dejan Lovren, priced at just 4.8, along with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet at 4.7, are likely to be popular targets.

Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen
Kane got his goal, although he was deprived the honour of scoring the final strike at White Hart Lane by Wayne Rooney’s consolation for Manchester Untied.

But Fantasy managers will be content enough with Kane’s return ahead of his second fixture with Leicester City on Thursday.

Now just two behind Romelu Lukaku in the race for the Golden Boot, we have to presume that he will remain motivated to retain that gong having claimed it in his last campaign.

Spurs remained full of attacking intent against United, with Eriksen once again in profit as he provided the dead-ball delivery for Kane’s goal.

The Dane has now produced 18 FPL assists over the season – level with Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne – delivering five in his last seven Gameweek starts.

A tally of five key passes in Sunday’s clash also ensured that Eriksen sat top of the Bonus Points System to claim an additional three points. Now tied with Dele Alli on 209, he’s outscored his team-mate by 50 points to 41 since Gameweek 31.

Ben Davies
With Danny Rose sidelined, Davies has been handed a start over the last 13 Gameweeks at left-back and has produced either an assist or a clean sheet in nine of those matches.

Rooney’s consolation robbed the Welshman of another shut-out and likely bonus points but, nonetheless, with Rose apparently being eased back into the fold, Davies looks well placed to see out the season ahead of trips to Leicester City and Hull City.

Wilfried Zaha, Christian Benteke
Subject to a flood of sales since Gameweek 34, the Palace pair were both key figures as the Eagles eased their way past a shell-shocked Hull City at Selhurst Park.

Zaha and Benteke were ranked third and fourth for FPL sales ahead of Gameweek 37 but, like Coutinho, they were to punish the legions who ushered them out.

Scoring a first goal since Gameweek 30, Zaha snapped a run of five successive blanks. Meanwhile, Benteke was back on the scoresheet following three blanks of his own.

While there will little or no investment in the pair, those still holding may consider retaining their services for the Gameweek 38 collision with a distracted Manchester United.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
With Coutinho delivering at the London Stadium, his compatriot Firmino missed out with an ongoing “muscle issue”..

Having provided three successive blanks prior to today’s absence, Firmino’s stock is in freefall having lost over 130,000 owners in the last two Gameweeks.

Coutinho ranks top for transfers in so far ahead of Gameweek 38, while Firmino retains his place in the top five for sales – only Romelu Lukaku has left more squads since Friday’s deadline.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Has there actually been a Chelsea press conference for tonight's game?

Any chance he can Catch me?

Good morning. Final week ideas what would you do with this lot and 2 FT's?

    Caballero
    Alonso, Vertonghen, Yoshida
    Hazard, Sanchez, Alli, King
    Costa, Kane, Jesus

subs: Pickford, Stephens, T.Carroll, Maguire --- 2 FT, 0.0 ITB

    A) Hazard and Yoshida -> Coutinho and Koscielny
    B) Hazard and Alonso -> KDB and Terry
    C) Hazard and Costa -> KDB and Sturridge
    D) Something else, what?

Why? He hasn't been that impressive lately. Two blanks and one assist in three. Always getting subbed. Conte saying he is tired.

Maybe there is a bit of a risk if by some chance he plays and goes on a rampage, but madness...surely not.

I sold Hazard this week for Sane, mainly to finance Pickford/Anichebe to Caballero/Llorente

Was not keen on a -8 hit after a WC but I felt it was needed after Spurs lost to WHU ... quite happy so far with it though and looking set for 38 without Hazard

GW38 - Exhibition time at the bridge, trophy presentation, 6 days rest until the cup final.
Why wouldn't Conte play a full strenght side (the team that's won the trophy) and haul a few off on the hour mark?
This has the feeling of a real thumping for SUN, maybe 5 or 6 nil? Watched the game at the weekend, they were really abysmal (Shearer ripped them to shreds on MOTD)!

Do we need a hot topic soon ?

      Late wildcards vs no wildcards.

Was it worth saving the wildcard again this year or did those just making a couple of changes keep up just fine ?...With the likes of Coutinho, Siggy, Zaha, King, Llorente and Tekkers delivering did we just need to sit on our hands.

Time to put some numbers to it all?

        • 15 Years

It would be worth looking into this once this gwk is over. The main issue with the late wildcard is that it prevents us from correcting our teams at an earlier stage in the season.

I suspect we can find winners and losers both ways in equal measure. I doubt many have seen any major advantage either way though.

In fact i'd probably say sitting on our hands with what we had probably would be edging it.

Cheers mate, obviously got a bit of luck along the way but I went against the advice on here at the time and played my WC early. The advice on here is usually so solid but I felt that the majority of posters seemed to have the blinkers on with regard to this, as in must keep it for the week before the big DGW.

in theory it's the most logical approach right?
But I think like me you saw that at that stage the team could really do with a refresh to pick up the trending players and drop a bunch of duds whilst still being able to be in a pretty strong position come DGW time....

Actually I'm wrong I was 64k the week before and halved my rank to 32k with a great GW28 score. Then I realised that my team needed a refresh (like you say) and I've stadily risen from 32k to 4k. I think many teams missed a trick here but many also were in good enough shape to hold off. No right or wrong time, it depends on your team. GL mate and well done, hope you can climb another bit!

It can work both ways, I climbed a lot without a WC and then subsequently by using it late. I'm now also in the top 4k.

Very well done, nonetheless and good luck for the rest of the season!

Exactly, can work both ways, nice work! But I guess the point is that players need to realise when their team needs it, mine did and yours obviously didnt! Best of luck for a strong finish mate!

I used mine early and initially it went great and I made about 40-50 points.

My end of season has been an unmitigated disaster though and no wc has meant I've kept players who I really didn't want.

In the end, I wish I'd waited.

          I don't get this.
If you made 40-50 points on early WC, that's equal to taking 10-12 transfers during the time you'd otherwise WC.

GW 35 you had Davies, Kane, Alonso and Hazard (not even counting the "maybes").
You could literally swap the whole rest of your team and still come out ahead point wise with the early wildcard.

I went in 31 to try and get a jump on the crowd. Gone from 67K to 21K since then, taken -16 in hits in the last 3GWs in prep for the 36/37 DGWs.

In my ML the guys who wildcarded last week or the one before absolutely thumped the ones who didn't.

WC teams had 90+ scores, the rest had 50 and below. Only one guy had 70 but that was because he hadn't made changes for weeks and kept three Arsenal defenders.

I'd say it paid off big time!

We can easily get an advantage over ML rivals but most on here who WC early keep one eye on the doubles anyway. They always have a strong tem for the doubles either with or without a WC in hand.

Of course, I plan in advance as well, but in this case it's hard to have a strong team for both GW34 and 37, since the top performers were completely different (e.g. ManU players were useless after 34).

The closer you wildcard to the double gameweek the better your chances imo. Lets you scout out potential injuries, players you'll want, players to avoid with more accuracy and less risk than those who played it earlier.

Definitely not worth it this year as the big DGW was 37 which shows that rotation is a major issue this late in the season. Think last year the big DGW was 34 so using it in 33 was more beneficial.
My rival this year used his WC weeks ago to get in King, Kane etc and needless to say gained a massive pt gap on people like me who kept faith with Aguero 🙁

Definitely wouldn't have scored 90 points if I hadn't of WCed in GW36 that's for sure!

I lost Benteke and Zaha on the WC but there's no way I was gonna ever retain them for 36 and beyond.

I had identified Lukaku, Siggy and Llorente as possible SGW heroes, 2 out of 3 scored decently. I also had Jags for ages on WC who scored well this GW but couldn't resist urge to swap for DGW when I finalised my WC 36 team.

Coutinho haul came out of the blue.

As you say its hard to measure and not having a WC doesn't mean you might not gravitate to the same players/points just have to plan way in advance.

            Horses for courses.

Just like it seems obvious to get Kane/King etc. early on transfers, so it may seem to get Yoshida* and Cech for DGW36, but you have to understand the back history of what's gone on before in each team and where they want to go as far as transfer plans are concerned.

*And yes I am aware quite a few had him already, but again every thing is team specific!

I scored 95 this week after WC in gw30. Would be 14 pts to good had I not dropped 2 sgw players for defender hits trying to maximize BB and just played the best 11 I had.

Had I only made 1 transfer last week and not had bench boost, id still be on 89 so late WC is not the reason you scored so highly.

I did an early WC last year and saved it for GW 36 this year, might be a bit early to tell but in hindsight I think I would have made more points just WCing when we knew who were playing DGW.

thank you for this, can I ask - do you know if form played a part in these results? or did they come out of the blue?

home sides seem to do well, eyeing up the liverpool boro game.

I don't think it's too controversial to say many of them came out of the blue.
If you just look at the Notable Results, it's fair to say big home wins for Arsenal and Tottenham, plus Man City's Title winning game fall into the "Expected Category".
Leicester's 5-1 win was their 7th in 9 games and they were playing relegated QPR so we'll chalk that down to form, even though it was their biggest win of the season.
But some of the others are highly unusual, in fact, record-breaking.

            Stoke 6-1 Liverpool.
This remains the only time Liverpool have ever conceded five first half goals in a Premier League game.
The last time Liverpool had conceded six or more goals in a top flight game was in 1963.

            Newcastle 5-1 Tottenham.
Ten-man Newcastle were already relegated and Tottenham needed a draw to finish above Arsenal in 2nd.
Prior to this defeat, all five of Tottenham's league defeats that season had been by a one-goal margin.
Only the second time in Premier League history that a team scored 5 or more and received a red card in the same game.

            West Brom 5-5 Man Utd
Remains the only Premier League 5-5.
Fergie's last game in charge. Lukaku became only the third player to score a hat-trick against Utd in the Premier League (David Bentley and Dirk Kuyt!)

The Chelsea Watford game was a really timely reminder of what can happen in these late season games, farewell appearances, players with something to prove, others trying not to get injured, some not trying as hard as they might, a party atmosphere and defensive shape upset by a raft of changes.
There simply isn't as much riding on them as normal games, it gives players licence to be more cavalier in tactics and intent.

Great reply, thank you. The match last night definitely highlighted your point, a taste of what's to come this weekend no doubt.

i remember that going into the 5-1 defeat Spurs had lost their previous game and drawn the two before that, and Alli was suspended. We now know they ran out of steam but despite little signs no-one saw that result coming.

Makes who to buy and who to sell even trickier than usual. Thanks again.

Rotation risk with your choice of bench and Hull were always likely to implode ? But it has enabled your starting 11 so job done

          Yeah, same here.

Pickford, Cedric, Holgate and Capoue for a grand total of 4.

This chip is overrated even with double game week players.

the hype was based on last year when the big double was gw 34 and every team had something to play for.
I got 149 pts, as did a lot of people on here. naturally people expected big things again but the blinkers went on ignoring the unpredictability of the last 3 gws.

i wont be bb gws 36 onwards next season. tc maybe

Last year was also different because there were plenty of high-scoring cheap options.

This year if you want to get the big hitters you need to have a lot of cash, which leaves you with slim pickings for your bench. In any case, I wild-carded GW35 so I prefer 3 weeks with strong starting line-up than one week with strong bench for BB.

yeah i wc 34. was enough time to plan for the doubles without putting it all on 1 gw. i dont think id change it in hindsight

This is so true. The BB options have been dire. Obviously we don't expect miracles at that price but still. Also don't forget last year there was Vardy and Mahrez who left tons of cash over for other options.

Still a few games to go though.

Dele Alli was also dirt cheap.

Last year the problem was who to put on the bench and the BB solved that problem quite nicely 😀

        Involved in 2 tight battles...

        1) Mini League - I was leading by 8 points by end of GW36.

Differentials left in GW37 so far:
Me - Cech, Monreal, Yoshida, Alli, Sane, Jesus + 6 points
Rival - Holding, Eriksen, Cesc, Rashford

        2) Head to Head this GW - Currently tied!!

Differentials left in GW37 so far:
Me - Cech, Monreal, Bavies, Stephens, Hazard, Alli, Sane
Rival - Courtois, Cedric, Pedro, Eriksen, Ozil, Gabbiadini

Maybe 1 or 2 days early to predict... But what are the chances looking like??

I think he's among those most likely to start, due to the lack of alternatives. Not too sure Conte will bother with playing Kenedy...

I feel Luiz, Matic, Hazard, Pedro and Costa are those most likely NOT to start.

I also think the chances are good for both Cahill, Azpi and Courtois to be rested along with Moses (as Conte seems to rate Aina).

              My take on our XI:

              Begovic
              Zouma Terry Aké
              Aina Fabregas/Chalobah Kanté Alonso/Kenedy
              RLC/Chalobah Batshuayi Willian

Tell me about it. Probably my best FPL memory of all time is when I captained VdV and my rival Cissé a few years back. Kiss scored those two freak goals against Chelsea, and then VdV followed up with a brace and an assist against Bolton (?). Good times

        Hazard Sanchez Alli Kante JWP
        Jesus (C) Anichebe Kane

Ya it's great have dgw players. The regular fixtures are finished and I still have a full squad of 11 to play again

          DeGea Pickford
          Holding Kompany Monreal Alonso
          Alli Sanchez (c) Sané
          Kane and Jesus

Sgw players Siggy Tekkers King and Mawson returning a combined 28 pts so can't argue with those guys.

Dropped Coutinho to Sané but I'd do the same again I in the morning so...
