Antonio Valencia has sustained a hamstring injury and could now face up to four weeks on the sidelines, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The news has filtered through from Ferguson’s post-match press conference, following tonight’s 2-0 win at Ajax in the Europa League and has now been confirmed by United’s official site. Valencia came off the bench to play a major part in his side’s second goal, sustaining the injury in the process. He was immediately replaced on 86 minutes.

While the injury will come as a major blow to United, the timing does at least coincide with the return to fitness of both Ashley Young and Nani. Young started tonight’s tie and opened the scoring with a smart finish as United outclassed their Dutch opponents in the second period. Nani was also in Ferguson’s starting lineup.

For Fantasy managers, Valencia’s absence would pose a problem with no automatic switch available. Valencia has been in sparkling form since his return to the fold and has attracted a steady flow of investment. His Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price has risen from a low of 7.8, to 8.3, as a run of 10 assists in 11 league games led to a significant increase in ownership. Those recent investors now face losing Valencia for a spell that will see United’s fixtures improve markedly – potentially losing out on continued returns.

Owners of Wayne Rooney will also be concerned – Valencia’s supply line has been hugely profitable for United of late and Nani and Young will need to step up to fill the void. It will be interesting to see if United’s goal output suffers, once deprived of Valencia’s quality.

Those now in the market for a replacement will likely prefer to look to Nani rather than Young – his price has fallen to 9.9 following injury but that’s still a significant jump from Valencia’s sale value. Nani may also take several matches to adjust back to the pace and we shouldn’t forget that he had scored just a single goal in seven league games prior to his recent absence.

Tom Cleverley also presents an intriguing alternative. He, too, returned to the United first XI in Holland tonight and, if he can establish a starting role in midfield, offers a cheap route to United’s attacking potential at just 5.1 in the FPL.

Cleverley was replaced on 61 minutes by Paul Scholes in this evening’s game and, like Nani, will likely need time to adjust back to the pace of matters. Should he show signs of form and regular starts, however, Cleverley could see increased investment as a result of Valencia’s spell on the sidelines.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Must be Evans? Norwich seems to score in every game and although Verm has a tough game I will give him also one more chance now he is back to his original position.

Verm is a starter so that leaves you choosing between Evans and Santon. If Evans plays 60+ mins in a full strength United team then him, but it's hard to say at the moment if he will.

Whats the Verm obsession on here, I have no hidden agenda I am a Gooner but I cant see how Verm is any value considering his high price and Arsenal's apparent lack of clean sheet opportunities. Is it purely his attacking threat, in which case there must be others?

Arsenal aren't the worst defensive unit around but I don't think that's why people want him. I guess it's his potential goal scoring exploits. Since he's been at left-back he's hardly had any efforts on goal and has even said that he doesn't like playing there. An on-form Verm at centre-back is a totally different proposition though - we're talking 3+ shots on goal per game and the potential of goals and subsequently bonus that comes with that.

Agree on all points, it's primarily his attacking threat - he does score amongst the highest of all defenders and did against Blackburn I think recently. That and an average CS chance with Arsenal. CS form swings it.

What I mean is he's only worth it if Arsenal are in one of their 'good' defensive streaks. Otherwise you might as well own Baines lol.

Post got lost at the bottom of the last page. Typical of my luck, really. Anyway, is Yaya or Sess (or anyone on or below 7.8m value) a no-brainer in Yaya's favour because of his fixtures?

For me yes, especially when i heard the fact that Yaya played less football at the ACON than he would have played if he had stayed in UK. If y9u cant afford Silva then Yaya is the man.

I already have little Davey. And Aguero too. Yaya would be my 3rd Citeh player but City's fixtures are irresistible and, on paper, should be cricket scores. Which, as a United fan, worries me that we're going to get left behind over the next few gameweeks.

Not overly confident in doing so because they're prone to complacency and have conceded silly goals to the likes of Norwich, Fulham, Bolton, Villa, Wolves, QPR etc. that have lost me cleanies before. Bitter refusal really.

    I did do the Rod to Ba transfer early to catch his price rises, but I knw if there was an inury, Simpson(WOLVES) and McClean(wba) could come in for someone so its all good! MY team for this gw at the mo looks like;
    Vorm
    Richards Shawcross Evans
    McClean Silva Bale Taarabt
    RvP Aguero Ba(c)
    Subs: Simpson Valencia Senderos.

Valencia to Mata for a 4 pt hit and bench McClean or just play McClean? Or play Simpson over McCLean? All 4 of my defenders do have good fixtures, but i prefer to play the attacking player usually!

    Krul, Vorm
    Richards, BAE, Evans, Santon, Caulker
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, McClean, Reo-Coker
    RVP, Aguero, Ba

    1.7 in bank

Any ideas for this team? I think I need to:
    1 - get rid of Reo-Coker
    2 - improve one defender (probably Santon/Caulker)
3 - get Utd attacking coverage (probably swap out Aguero or Silva)

Am considering Aguero > Rooney. Aguero is so frustrating; does nothing away from home, and doesn't even do that much when he is at home, especially considering his price! Even if Rooney is a bad option, i think i will get rid of Aguero because you I could probably get better value elsewhere.

I've said it before I'll say it again. Why own Aguero if you're gonna sell him ahead of home games vs Blackburn and Bolton, that was the whole point in buying him. Look at his record at home vs lower sides. He has 15 league goals, 3 of which have been away. 12 goals in 11 home games is not to sniffed at, he has delivered at least an assist in all but 2 home games this season (Tottenham and Arsenal are the only failures).

because i got him a long time ago, not just a few weeks, therefore i dont really care about the next two games where he will do nothing if he does even play!

          *looks into time machine*

wow Aguero will do nothing against 2 of the 3 worst defences in the league, when he consistently scores goals at home v lesser opponents.

          SELL HIM FAST.

You're talking about the 3rd highest scoring striker in FPL with 2 fantastic fixtures.

we did indeed, except the jammy little sh@t leading my ML by 10 points who was gonna take Ade out but had to leave in due to injuries and ending swapping Kompany out for BAE.

That being said he took Silva out last week, so he currently has no City players.

he plays the fixtures week by week, no forward planning. Yet he is beating me by 10 points by picking up jammy points here and there. Nonetheless I am convinced I will eventually triumph.

Most people seem to be keen to ditch Valencia with the prospect of him being missing for 4 weeks. I'm more inclined to keep hold rather than waste one transfer to sell and another to buy back for an easy run of fixtures.

    Is this madness?

      not really.

I will probably swap him with Nani, but it will cost me later 4 pts to sell him back, otherwise I will not have money to do any other transfers. it is a risk, i know.

It depends who are your substitutes. We are talking about two GWs only. If you think that your 5th mid can do the job and you have also playing defenders who can jump in in a case of need, then save the FT and hits.
