The Digest – Gameweek 35

We end our retrospective coverage of Gameweek 35 with our usual summary as we assess the latest player, team and talking point to draw our attention.

Alexandre Lacazette helps steer Free Hit chip managers up the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rankings with a rare double-digit points haul. Man City continue to rack up the goals to cement a place in our plans for the final three rounds of fixtures. Meanwhile, the Free Hit is confirmed as the perfect and powerful solution to fixture postponements.

The Player

Never mind the Anfield Express, Arsene Wenger’s pre-match press conference on Thursday was hugely influential on the plans of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers for Gameweek 35.

The Arsenal manager’s admission that he would name a line-up in preparation for tomorrow’s Europa League clash with Atletico Madrid persuaded many to swap in Alexandre Lacazette for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with their Free Hit chips.

Handed the lone striker role for the second successive Gameweek, Lacazette scored twice to equal his season-high haul of 13 FPL points – only the second time this term he’s managed double-digits.

It’s now four goals in as many league outings for the Frenchman since returning from injury.

As Ragabolly’s Metrics article from last Saturday explained, among the 10,000 FPL managers playing Free Hit chips in Gameweek 35, Lacazette was the sixth most owned player (63.93%).

By comparison, just 2.11% of the top 10k managers without the chip in play held the summer signing.

Assessed against Aubameyang – who had a 28.63% ownership for Gameweek 35 Free Hit managers and 51.4% of those without – it’s fair to say that Wenger’s teamsheet was pivotal in many managers’ climbing the ranks.

Conversely, though, the Gunners’ upcoming European schedule now swings momentum away from Lacazette and back towards Aubameyang.

Each of Arsenal’s semi-final matches against the Spanish side takes place three days before their respective next two league fixtures.

Bearing in mind that Aubameyang is ineligible for this competition, there would be no real surprise to see Lacazette’s minutes managed as Wenger bids for silverware in his final season at the Emirates.

With a Double Gameweek 37 on the agenda and a final-day trip to Huddersfield, Aubameyang now has the platform to maintain a run that’s served up points in six successive appearances.

But Lacazette will always have Gameweek 35.

The Team

If there were any concerns over Man City losing their focus after clinching the title, Sunday’s 5-0 win over Swansea put them to rest.

Despite resting the likes of Nicolas Otamendi, Kyle Walker and Leroy Sane, the champions ran riot against Carlos Carvalhal’s relegation-battlers.

As if we needed reminding of their collective ability to rack up the Fantasy returns, each of City’s front five found themselves on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, three of them – Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and David Silva – all brought in double-figure hauls.

With trips to West Ham and Southampton on either side of pair of Double Gameweek 37 home encounters with Huddersfield and Brighton, Pep Guardiola’s side could barely have a more inviting schedule for would-be investors.

As a result, Jesus and Sterling are among the top three players for transfers in ahead of this weekend’s deadline – only Harry Kane has been more popular.

However, as Guardiola’s weekend starting XI also suggests, we should expect the unexpected from here on in.

With the likes of Phil Foden and Benjamin Mendy pushing for starts and Fernandinho now back from suspension, there’d be no surprise if the City boss continued to chop and change his set-up, given that many regulars have the small matter of a summer World Cup looming.

In turn, that could dent their prospects when it comes to selecting the Triple Captain chip for Double Gameweek 37 – arguably, Guardiola’s tinkering could mean that not one of his outfield players starts all four remaining matches.

While that promotes Kane’s appeal as a Triple Captain – particularly if he still has a chance of claiming the Golden Boot – City’s ability to deliver big points surely makes at least one or two of their big-hitters worth the risk for that very favourable run-in.

The Talking Point

Echoing the impact of Gameweek 31, the Gameweek 35 Free Hit chip helped managers made up significant ground in the overall rankings.

Remarkably, although the average score for Free Hit managers was considerably different over each of these Gameweeks (95.5 vs 58.2), the points gained over non-Free Hit rivals was near-identical.

In Gameweek 31 the average gain was 25.4 points, and in Gameweek 35 the average gain was 25.7 points.

However, a further analysis into the data shows that those managers who played their Free Hit chip in Gameweek 35 averaged 79.8 points in Double Gameweek 34, whereas those who didn’t play their Free Hit chip in Gameweek 35 averaged 71.1 points in Double Gameweek 34.

We can deduce, then, that those who had the Free Hit chip to play in Gameweek 35 earned some advantage in their preparations for Double Gameweek 34.

The Wildcard also played a part, with many playing this chip in Gameweek 32 or 33 to load up on players who played twice in both Gameweek 34 and 37.

And with many Free Hit Gameweek 35 managers now holding a host of players with a Double Gameweek 37, it won’t be until the season comes to a close before we can look back and assess the true impact of delaying the Free Hit chip until last weekend.

The one thing we can say with certainty, though, is that the Free Hit chip has the power to shake up the rankings and is the perfect solution to a reduced set of fixtures.

It already seems very unlikely that experienced FPL managers will consider deploying the chip in any other scenario next season.

Some may appreciate the work of Anfield Express. Personally don't think it is the way the game should be played. We already by using sites such as this one hold a huge advantage over many of our rivals. Knowing team sheets ahead of the game isn't far off being tantamount to cheating imo.

It feels a bit cheap sure but what can you do? It's out there, many competitors will be using it, so it would be stupid not to do the same. I don't particularly like the chips in FPL but I still use them. If you want to even the playing field why not just tell your ML rivals about it?

We should quit using fpl statistics too as that gives us an unfair advantage of pricing.

Let's also ignore the upcoming fixtures, especially if there are blank or double gameweeks, because many other players forget to do this.

Actually, let's go one step further and just auto select our teams, because knowing about players' form is also considered cheating imo.

It’s not about where to draw the line, like you are sarcastically suggesting here, but there’s truly a qualitative difference between information that is allowed and information that is not... A lineup leak is obviously not allowed in FPL as they always put the GW deadline at the same time the first lineup is out, so that we don’t get to know it. Ever wondered why that is? The deadline could be later too! The game’s just more fun this way!!!

how about closing down any statistical site while we are at it? This old debate of "it's cheating" or "gaining an unfair advantage" is absolute nonsense.

You use the data/information/stats available to you and take advantage of it. If someone is less aware or can't be bothered to research this then that is on them.

It is not surprising that on a site like this majority of people disagree with Monkey Hanger here, and that many posts that say this is nonsense get a lot of upvotes, but nonsense it truly is not!

“You use the data/information/stats available to you and take advantage of it. If someone is less aware or can't be bothered to research this then that is on them.”

I am not necessarily disagreeing with this, although it is not you who are researching anything, you are just passively a part of a site where information is spoon-fed to you! In FPL, we are not meant to know the lineups before we choose our sides, that’s a great part of FPL! Hence, knowing a lineup before deadline is truly a wrong way to play the game! And is a cowardly way to play the game. It is not cheating, per se, but it is rather cowardly! It is not the way FPL is meant to play! You should respect FPL more mate! Now you are just thinking about yourself and willing to do whatever it takes to win!

not sure where you draw the line.
information is in the public domain.
is it fair that members can get extra stats info if they are prepared to pay for it? For someone playing in other parts of the world 15 quid could be too much money.
Issue arising here is that AE seem to be accurate whereas for years many other leaked team info hasn't been.
As far as using sites like this for an advantage (language issues aside) the same info is theoretically available to everyone playing the game as it is an internet-based game. You can access this site (and others like it) from anywhere in the world so it's hardly info that is deliberately being withheld from anyone to give others an advantage.
AE posting on twitter - not on here - so it's 2nd hand info being used by those that want to trust it.

If it's cheating then using any additional info or research is cheating. For example, reading Wenger's presser telling you that Lacazette is going to play over Aubameyang is then cheating.

Anything that is publicly available is fair game. When the information is not publicly available, then it's effectively insider trading and obviously cheating.

Can't believe the amount of hate for this post. Yes, it's 100% CHEATING.

The game is to predict lineups as well as points. Not just points. If we are given the lineups in advance, we have no predicting to do, so it's cheating. This is no different from being given the questions and answers of an exam in advance.

You don't see Mark disclosing this information on the FPL Show, because it's cheating. We know about AE due to being active here.

That being said, if I have an opportunity to cheat in an exam, I take it, and it's the same thing here. I wish we didn't get leaked lineups, but I won't look the other way.

      1. JasonG123
        • 10 Years

I think Mark not disclosing AE is more wrong by him, not by us. He should certainly be disclosing it, I'm telling as many people as I can about it. Maybe he's not legally allowed to reference an outside account or is scared they'll get it wrong one week and then get backlash.

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 7 Years

No, he won't because it's cheating. Think about it. This is the official FPL Show. We have our deadlines an hour before the first game of every gameweek - this is so that we predict the lineups. If not, the deadline would be at kick off. He cannot disclose this information on the official FPL Show because it breaks their own game rules.

Managers hinting their lineups in press conferences and talking about injuries is obvious public information, so that's not cheating.

Well it's impossible for us to predict price rises, so it's not part of the game. There are people who use that site and there are people who don't. People who don't can't predict it.

I get your point but price rises are common knowledge to everyone as it's in the rules, they are sure to notice it themselves and it's also talked about on the FPL Show. Actually finding the website for it can just be done with a simple Google search. If you search 'fpl price rises', it's the first result on the page.

But lineups is definitely much bigger than that. Anything with the word 'leaked' is typically against the rules. It's leaked from an unknown source before the manager officially reveals it.

If you are trying to say that someone knows more than other because he goes to a website which provides valuable information and other people don't have that information because they don't go to that website then you can not blame the guy who goes to the website or the website which provides that information.... it's the other people who should be blamed because they are not serious about the game

This wouldn't be considered insider trading as the Anfield Express tweets are publicly available information (plenty of firms are now mining twitter for information) - and that's why it isn't cheating - any player of the game could find them if they wanted to. If Anfield Express (or anyone else 'in the know' about lineups or anything else) used that information to manage their own team then that would be equivalent to insider trading and (IMHO) cheating in an FPL sense.

yeah, I do fell a bit dirty... since I'm top of the league and my rivals (my friends) haven't got a clue about the AE.

but on the other hand they spend less time 'investigating' all that stuff - AND if they had, they'd probably know about Wenger's Aubameyang plans, etc.

If i play a game of chess against you and we're both 1800 Elo rated players and a use an offline chess engine like Leela who is rated 3300, that's cheating because it will give me a guaranteed win over you. This guarantees no win.

In fact we're talking about an average of two players out of 11. The luck factor of right captaincy bothers me more, but that's an other topic.

I can't believe it hasn't been stopped yet. We are only thinking about it from an FPL perspective, but knowing the team in advance is a huge advantage to their opponents. Isn't sharing confidential information a crime?

Having said that, I'm using it. FPL feels like such an unfair game sometimes that if using research can balance the odds then I'll take that chance any time.

Loving this thread. Most of us would get the Liv team prediction fairly right for Stoke and Anfield express little advantage. I believe Salah will start and Bobby will rest. Bobby is the puppet master and the main man in ways. Smart casuals are in no way disadvantaged with a "captain Mo always approach" regardless of whether he starts or not. He's the capacity to bang in plenty in 20 minutes. I'm just baffled why its always the pool with a "Deep throat"!

I could be wrong here but there is no 'law' that im aware of in football that stipulates team sheets should not be announced prior to the game, it's just tradition for them not to be publicised. However, if LFC are aware the AE are leaking team sheets (which they must be) and haven't put a stop to it, I assume they consent. In my view that's a refreshing change to the norm and makes things more interesting in FPL. I dont mind taking advantage of that at all, I wish there were a few more inconsistencies from time to time, it gives those who pay close attention to team news and work hard at selecting their squads based on info to hand the advantage they deserve.

Couldn’t agree more! Even this whole FFS site feels like cheating! Well, not cheating, per se, but nonetheless the wrong way to play the game... I mean, one can know nothing about football, nothing about the premier league, nothing about the teams, nothing about the players, and come here and pick a fantasy team according to the information given here...

Anyone who disagrees with this just want to win and not really play the game themselves... People who think AE leak is ok are taking this game and winning in it way too seriously!! I definitely think the AE leak is a very bad thing! Wake up people!!!

This is no different to the twitter-verse/rumor-mill announcing 2 hours before a game-week kicks off that X player from Y Team will not play tonight due to Z Reason.

This happens multiple times a season, every season.

Personally I didn't know about AE and have only found about it due to this HT. I started Firmino on my FH team over the likes of Barnes + extra money ... which is just too bad for me not doing better research.

This site's major draw card is the bringing together of such (reliable) information/analysis, and people who source/create such information/data, for the benefit of all Members and Visitors.

The secrecy of team-sheets in all codes has long been a tradition to keep other Real Life Managers guessing. As a Liverpool supporter I'm not impressed AE is selling us out in order to up his e-fame/followers and putting us (Liverpool) at a disadvantage. From a FPL perspective though? Just another piece of information every1 has access too, to take into account when making decisions.

The ethical question would be whether you consider it cheating if this information was only being distributed privately or exclusively to certain individuals/sites leading to ML wins, Overall wins, and from a commercial perspective drawing people away from a reputable site like this to another site.

I actually think it's a weird part of the game that we don't know the team sheets before the Gameweek starts.
In Australia, our AFL teams are announced on a Thursday night, before games are played Friday - Sunday.
Meaning you know if your player is playing before the Gameweek starts, nowhere near as stressful.
We also have a lockout on each game, so you can still trade players in the last game of the week for other players in that game up until it starts.

Yep I agree, I prefer knowing the teams before playing in AFL games (supercoach). But I personally hate the rolling lockout because it's too stressful trying to keep track of any late changes, so I'd prefer if it just locked out on Friday night.

It's on twitter, and it gets tweeted and re-tweeted by pretty much anyone who cares about FPL, so it's public information to me. Everyone who plays FPL can access this information so it's a level playing field.

If AE is able to continue to leak going forward then you can think of FPL as essentially a game where you go into each GW with 19 unknown lineups + Liverpool's known lineup. It's not cheating when everyone has the same information available to them. If you ignore this info however, that's a completely different story. That's no different from if you choose to set your lineup without checking other publicly available information, like the fixtures, injury updates, weather conditions etc.

The real outrage should be at Liverpool in the *real* PL where AE is giving a genuine advantage to their opponents each week due to asymmetric information amongst the teams in the game. In the real PL, Liverpool is genuinely disadvantaged since their opponents know their lineup while they do not.

while it gives me no extra pride in using the information to beat my friends in the casual ML, the information is essential in the more serious leagues, and in OR where everyone is following FFS and AE. I'm currently in the top 100 and I find it satisfying to do better than those who have the same information as me.

      Noooot.
I think exactly the opposite. I think that if there would be a way to know all lineups before deadline would be much better.
First for those who care and plan their moves as random bench is really anoying and advantage for those who dont plan.
Second thing is that if you are crazy about that game and make research etc you should be rewarded.

So much dislike for this post! Unreal! Firstly, ya’ll should learn some English, he’s not saying it’s cheating, he said it’s tantamount to cheating! It really is tantamount to cheating and no amount of self-denial is making it otherwise.

tantamount = equivalent in meaning or effect

I understand both sides of the camp here, and I really feel the AE leak is just a shame! If I won my ML because I knew Firmino didn’t start GW35 and therefore I didn’t pick him in my FH team whereas my ML rival didn’t know this and picked Firmino, I would not feel so proud as I normally would that I won due to meticulous research, watching the games, and so on (and so much of FPL is luck anyway)... Don’t you all feel that way? I truly feel like this!

Many people talking about doing research and planning. Knowing the AE leak has nothing to do with research or planning, it’s just a happenstance, you know about it because you’re on this site! I know I do! If I weren’t on here I would not know about the leak. It’s just a random happenstance, none of it is my own achievement!

Seriously? "It's not cheating, just tatamount to cheating"....? That is your point, the semantics of near-cheating or feelings of guilt associated with quasi cheating vs literal cheating...? Okay then, we can go there: coping mechanisms for guilt associated with self doubt around taking advantage of inside information readily available to all, yet not necessarily seen by all, and used to one's advantage. Therapy? Rx? Avoidance of information?

    65. MTPockets

Wouldn't say tantamount to cheating, but undermines satisfaction from utilising and benefitting from the information.

Problem is that fair is overrated in the real world. Why partake in / bet on a fair fight? Success is often about finding and using asymmetric advantage. Perhaps it shouldn't be but that's a different discussion.

Is Smalling nailed for the remaining fixtures?

Mulling over whether to sign him or Vertonghen... (I don't have any Utd or Spurs defenders)

      Cheers

Cheers, mate. Judging by your pic, seems a good endorsement! Jan's fixtures look strong but Smalling's cheaper price and greater goal threat appeals.

      Verto • Tarko • Bailly
      Salah • Son • Mahrez • Willian
      Kane • Vardy • Barnes

      (Ryan / Mili / Dunk / Morgan)

      A) Save FT
      B) Mahrez ➡️ Sterling
      C) Bailly & Mahrez ➡️ Smalling & Sterling (-4)
      D) Bailly & Mahrez ➡️ Dummet & Sterling (-4)
(Will have exact cash for Vardy to Jesus after he rises by 0.1)

        A.

i'd rather have 2FT and get a feeling which ManCity mids will could play 2 in 37.

just a thought -- now that the title is clinched, i think David Silva could very well be given compassionate leave
to be with his family. Sane instead of Silva if you do it this week?

Sterling will most definitely get most minutes?
Pretty much ball season people thought City will rotate a lot and they didn’t.

if i was sure Sterling would get the most minutes, then he's definitely the one to have.

they have the title now. i think Pep will want to give Foden minutes, perhaps a few starts. and
play BSilva more than he had all year. perhaps thank YaYa for his service with some gametime.
someone has to sit down on each occasion.

Think you’re putting too much thought into City rotation. They haven’t rotated all season and Pep has come out and said that they know they are chasing records and this will keep the team motivated to keep performing.

                maybe.

anyway, i've thought it through. i have no City players now and 1 FT. if Salah is confirmed on the bench, he'll go this week for a City mid. Sterling or Sane probably. if he's starting, i'm rolling the FT to have 2 for 37.

i am going to try to manage without any hits (or 1 at most if i make 3 transfers in 37). Barnes --> Ayew, Salah ---> a City mid, and perhaps another City mid is the way it could be for me.

i don't think Jesus is necessary.

Kane - Vardy - and Barnes ----> Ayew (in 37)

of course, unless you have the 5.0 difference in price properly distributed.

you're losing Vardy, you're taking a hit, etc. -- it all counts in the decision.
