With Argentina, Portugal and Spain already falling by the wayside in the last 16, Fantasy managers will be hoping that Brazil can progress to the quarter-finals at the expense of Mexico in today’s 3pm kick-off.

Fantasy bosses receive only three free transfers before the next transfer deadline on Friday and, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Isco, Sergio Ramos and Diego Costa already surplus to requirements in our squads, an early exit for the Selecao would cause untold misery for those without a wildcard left to deploy.

Marcelo (£6.5m), previously the most-owned player in the McDonald’s FIFA game, starts on the bench for Brazil today after his early withdrawal in the group stage match against Serbia. The Real Madrid defender, who was jettisoned by over 220,000 managers ahead of the round of 16 deadline, is still owned by 31.6% of Fantasy bosses.

Marcelo’s crown as the most popular Fantasy asset in the McDonald’s FIFA game has been taken by Philippe Coutinho (£9.2m), who is included in 54.7% of our squads. No midfielder has scored more Fantasy points than Coutinho at this World Cup: the Barcelona playmaker has scored on two occasions and registered an assist in his three appearances to date.

Neymar (£12.0m) began the tournament as the most popular forward in the McDonald’s FIFA game, though his ownership has dipped from an initial 33% to just over 21% now. Should Brazil make it through today’s test against Mexico, Neymar can surely expect to amass more owners given that the other two players in the circa-£12.0m price bracket – Ronaldo and Messi – are already on their way home.

Thiago Silva (£6.1m), Allison (£6.0m) and Casemiro (£5.5m) are the other three Brazilian players with double-digit ownerships: the trio is owned by 21.6%, 13% and 12.7% of Fantasy managers respectively.

Not a single Mexico player is owned by over 10% of those who are playing McDonald’s FIFA, with Guillermo Ochoa (£5.1m) the most popular asset on show for El Tri (9.1% of Fantasy bosses own the Mexican goalkeeper).

Hirving Lozano (£8.0m) is Mexico’s most-selected outfielder, sitting in 2.4% of our squads.

Those with Brazilian assets in their teams should be confident of attacking returns this afternoon: Mexico allowed the opposition more shots on goal (58) than any other nation in the group stage.

None of the 12 teams left in the tournament has had more shots in the penalty area (34) than Brazil, meanwhile. Tite’s side has allowed the opposition only three shots on target in this World Cup, to highlight their defensive solidity.

Brazil XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Fagner, Silva, Miranda, Filipe; Paulinho, Casemiro, Coutinho; Willian, Gabriel Jesus, Neymar

Mexico XI (4-3-3): Ochoa; Martinez, Ayala, Salcedo, Gallardo; Marquez, Herrera, Guardado; Vela, Lozano, Hernandez

Despite my reservations I've enjoyed VAR so far. I'd be more than happy now for it to be used to stop diving via a red card and stop nonsense like we saw from Neymar today with a similar red coloured card.

    Can't come soon enough.

    1. Fantasy Gold
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

      Yes, it’s been ok.

The only issues I have with it are that it takes too long sometimes, it’s not transparent (we need audio) and it seems to be used selectively. I’m all for making fairer decisions but it needs to be fairer for everyone across the board, not just when it suits their agenda.

Agreed 100%. It's worked well without slowing down the game much. It has also been quite dramatic and dare I say fun..? I would like to see them use it now to eliminate diving by either doing it on the spot or reviewing at both half and full time and issuing red cards for cheating. Diving would be a thing of the past within half a season if they did that.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years

Yep. Dramatic and fun...that’s the main bit for me.

I think the main issue regarding refereeing that needs fixing is the ambiguity in the rules and lack of consistency, too many decisions depend on "interpretation" and too many referees are afraid to make the right but difficult calls. Also referees ned to stop being so protected, should be well within a manager's or players right to slate a referee for a poor performance, they get paid big money too so should be judged accordingly

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

The interpretation part is the bit that makes it dramatic. Even when VAR is called for we are still left with one persons interpretation... which could be wrong, or maybe not...but in either event the waiting is dramatic.

Simulation isn't, and shouldn't be, a YC offence imo.

The problem is subjectivity. Some people go down expecting contact. In that case it's fine margins between a foul being given for or against the player who goes down, since he could have been avoiding contact from an unfair challenge (a foul) or avoiding contact from a fair challenge (not a foul).

I could flesh that out which a thousand possible iterations, but the point is that it's not clear-cut enough to give a red for all simulation, so you'd have to introduce degrees of simulation in order to be able to give a RC or a YC (or maybe even just a foul). But I wouldn't want VAR to slow down the game every time someone goes down too easily, so we can debate whether it was a RC simulation or a YC simulation.

Extreme simulation like Neymar today should definitely be red. Trying to get a player sent off via that nonsense is out and out cheating...even if he did deserve it. It was pathetic.

            • 9 Years

Ah but VAR helps the right decision, so there's no need to retaliate with a rash red card. Just let them have a 1-game retro ban if the powers that be decide it was beyond reasonable, rather than ruin the match by sending someone off. That lessens the chance of mistakes, and acts as a prevention and deterrent, rather than a rash reaction. Just my opinion. I don't think many agree ( I also don't view it as cheating, but that's another discussion 😀 )

            1. Deulofail
              • 9 Years
              7 years, 6 months ago

(The point being that simulation can't buy you anything of value anymore, because VAR exists. So at worse, simulation is just childish behaviour that ramps up tension and makes you look stupid)

              • 13 Years

Klinsman shares your view. I remember him saying diving on the continent wasn’t viewed as cheating like it is here when he came to the prem.

                • 9 Years
                7 years, 6 months ago

I'm not from the continent, but I figure that if simulation is cheating, then so is every little attempt to garner favour with the officials or gain an 'unfair' advantage in the game. Calling for a throw-in that isn't yours, keepers coming slightly off their lines for pens, putting your hands on the ref, and every single foul you make.

Stick only if you're playing it safe.

Colombia are no pushovers and dont give penalties quickly. I would stay with Neymar and hope he gets the assist

If he hasn't got it now, he's not getting it. I think I will twist for the crack.

Swiss are most disciplined side remaining in World cup. Dont think it will be easy for them to concede penalty
