Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers have answered some of your questions in time for your Gameweek 7 preparation.

The questions this week all centred around the potential shift in defence for Fantasy managers. Premium options in this position have been hugely popular since the start of the campaign but are starting to losing their appeal.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Who’s on the panel this week?

Az – Well-known name on Twitter and beyond, who cracked the top 1k in 2017/18 (finishing with an enviable overall rank of 817) after previously having recorded two finishes inside the top 5,000.

Joe – the host of our Scoutcast – plus many other weekly videos – and who sits 79th in our Career Hall of Fame, having recorded seven top 10,000 finishes in ten seasons of playing FPL (including an “OR” of 840 in 2013/14).

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

Question 1 – Az

With some decent budget defensive options emerging, would it be wise to move away from three premiums and pick two or even one, opting to rotate defenders and pump money further up the field to afford four premium attackers and a full playing squad?

A good question, and reminds me of last season, where preferred formations changed almost weekly. It’s really added a new dimension to Fantasy Football, as I remember in earlier seasons, moving away from a 3-4-3 formation was very dangerous and any more than one premium defender was seen as a rookie mistake.

“On first glance, it seems a good a time as any to move away from premium priced defenders if you are looking to invest in other positions. Mendy is carrying an injury, and both Alonso and Robertson have a couple of tough games.

“The problem is, I don’t suddenly think these players are going to be bad picks. They are just too consistent and are delivering week in, week out when they play. They have 12 assists between them in 6 gameweeks alone, so I think even if the clean sheets dry up, they are still likely to register attacking returns. Alonso remains the highest scoring player in the game, and Mendy sits on an average of eight points per game (Robertson isn’t far off on 6.8).

“When you factor in the fact that you can play these defenders almost every game and expect some points – suddenly the idea of trying to second guess who is going to emerge with points from the 4.5 defenders isn’t quite as appealing.

“Mendy and Alonso seem like season-keepers to me, due to their sheer attacking intent.

“It’s Robertson who I think might be the expendable one of the trio. A downgrade to Alexander-Arnold gives you a million in the bank to play with, and Trent proved last week that he is capable of getting attacking returns and even has a few set plays in his locker.

“For me, with Liverpool’s new found resilience and strong backline, a defender from their team is just as important as keeping hold of Mendy, Alonso and Wan-Bissaka. That leaves one defender spot up for grabs, assuming that you have Wan-Bissaka. There are certainly some brilliant options to go for, such as Jonny or Doherty (open play attacking prospects), Duffy (on the end of set plays), Holebas (taking free-kicks) and Chillwell (assist potential).

“Rather than looking to inject more cash up front, I’m considering a permanent switch to four, or even five at the back. This is the position where the points seem to be coming from at the moment.”

Question 2 – Joe

With Spurs’ good run of fixtures coming up, is it worth shipping Man City, Liverpool or Chelsea assets to bring in the likes of Trippier, Eriksen, Alli or Kane?

“I’m a firm believer that form follows fixtures.

“We have already seen that with Arsenal this season. The Gunners lost their first two tough games and since Gameweek 3 have beaten West Ham, Cardiff, Newcastle and Everton, scoring 10 goals along the way.

“We have already seen that to some extent with Tottenham. Against Brighton they showed renewed resilience. Winning and surviving a late onslaught from the Seagulls.

“That game, plus a fine run over the next three (hudd, CAR, whu) prompted me to get Kieran Trippier in on my Wildcard last week for Benjamin Mendy. I’d advise those still with the Frenchman in their side to do the same, unless we hear more positive news on his foot injury later in the week. Trippier’s price point also means it is simpler to get Mendy back in. The spectre of rotation always looms with the England full back, but a strong bench should cover that, especially as Trippier has either started or been given a full rest this season with no annoying one minute cameos.

“Christian Eriksen’s handing over of some set pieces to Trippier lessens his appeal in midfield, and I don’t think currently he can compete with premium midfielders from the likes of City, Liverpool or Chelsea.

“Up front though Harry Kane looks appealing. Five shots, all in the box and with just one being off target, against Brighton is the kind of underlying statistics I want to see from the Spurs striker. He looks an interesting captaincy pick this weekend away to the Terriers and especially desirable for the armband in Gameweek 8, when he hosts Cardiff and Liverpool face Manchester City.

“Which premium asset should make way for Kane?

“For me Aguero has to stay, but using money from selling Mohamed Salah to fund that move is something I’ll be seriously considering ahead of the Spurs frontman’s plum home tie with Neil Warnock’s relegation certainties.”

Question 3 – Holly

How much should we focus on getting Mendy out and is trippier the best option apart from template defenders?

“With no definitive news as yet on Mendy, I would try to stay patient until Friday before making a transfer out.

“With budget bench backup defenders like Wan-Bissaka and Ryan Bennett providing value, there should be options within our squads to replace his clean sheet potential.

“Personally, I’ve had Mendy since Gameweek 1, so would rather not transfer him out if it materialises that he’s fit for the weekend when I have profit tied up in him.

“It can be tempting to make a move though, and as price swings materialise, managers may need to act quick in order to bring the favoured replacement of Trippier.

“Consistent attacking returns, plus set piece responsibility and excellent fixtures make it a decent move on paper.

“However, Spurs have managed just one clean sheet and are without captain Lloris.

“Elsewhere, Laporte could be considered. City have kept consecutive clean sheets and he’s played every minute.

“To free up funds, consider a move for Wolves wing back Matt Doherty, with four favourable fixtures up next. Arsenal are another side with great fixtures, with full backs Bellerin and Monreal the best source of attacking returns.”

Yes. CS points and one extra for goals means that Firmino is no option vs him. And according to bookies, Mané is more likely to score than Bobby.

With high ownership levels and the average FPL player more 'knowledgeable' than in season's past (i.e. generally making more 'sensible' choices, en masse), is captaincy becoming too automatic?

GW6 was the first time this season where I've been genuinely been torn on captaincy between Salah and Aguero.
Turns out my main ML rival and I both chose the same (c) again...for the SIXTH consecutive week!
Captaincy seems to be losing its lustre this season with these two 40-50% owned heavyweights vying for our attention week in week out..

            Can't blame them 😉

But I do think it takes more than that. Fair enough, it's easy to pick a team for one week, but the planning required to do it over a longer period, making a more complicated strategy still takes time and energy. There are plenty of hints about ways to go forward but it's still on every player to put it all together

oh here i'm not saying they'll finish top of any MLs but was just saying why the "average" player is making better calls at the mo is because they do as they're told.

again, 100% not having a go! great work by Mark to get to this level!!!

Not owning Salah has made my choices a little more interesting, and i've benefitted from captaining Mane in GW1 and Hazard in GW5.

It did result in a GWR of 4.75m in GW3 though, when Salah was the stand out pick and scored vs Brighton in an otherwise low scoring week.

Last season I made the mistake of taking too many risks with my captaincy choices. Annoyingly this season playing it too safe has probably cost me around 20-30 points.

Still can't believe I went with Aguero over Hazard when he hauled against Cardiff. (Yes captain hindsight)

Not for me, still probably the most crucial decision of the week and I missed out on both the Aguero and Hazard hauls. Aguero does seem the obvious pick this week but given he’s carrying an injury and is likely to have his minutes curtailed again, maybe we should consider other options? Managers with Kane or willing to punt on a differential like Lacazette or Richarlison this weekend could be the gameweeks big winners.

No its just your mindset and the type of player you are.

GWK 5 safe players went for Aguero, risk takers went for Hazard. Hazard scored 20 points.
This GWK the safe players will again go for Aguero, the risk takers may go for Kane. We will see who comes out on top

No point in taking risks with the captaincy this early on, You’re more likely to just fall behind. Save the risky moves for when it matters! At the end...

Why not take risks early and then play it safe later on? You can still be risky the same number of weeks.

Personally, I do what you suggest above but there's no need to do it that way, really. A punt or two early that work out early on would work the same way

Think it's just the way the fixtures have fallen so far. Salah or Aguero have had a good fixture every week so far so it's been easy to stick the armband on the highest owned players. That being said it's the players who took somewhat of a risk and captained Hazard in GW5 who have probably gained an advantage. I'm sure there will be more weeks like this where someone else ends up being a much better choice and ignoring Mo and Kun at the right times will be key.

      • Karan_G14

No I don’t agree with this. Still think it’s one of them most imp decisions of the game you have to get right every week. Yes there are 2 heavyweights fighting it out this season but how long will they last? Last season it was Kane or Kaku for first 7-8 weeks but long term Salah killed. Even Sterling had become a reliable captain at home. I still think Hazard, Kane, Auba etc will have a say in our captaincy decisions.

      • FredtheRed
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

No - still the most important decision in the game.

In the example you give, it does not matter if you and your ML rival picked the same captaincy 37 times out of 38, it could be that one spell of brilliance/insanity that is the difference between 1st and 2nd.

It also stands to reason that the most in-form and/or popular players are going to be picked (C) the most often by the most number of people, but having the choice to go rouge and maverick occasionally is a great thing (especially if it pays off! - Wallcott hat-rick anyone?!?)

The fun lies in getting one or two gutsy captain punts right. I captained Mitro in GW6 and I couldn't be happier. So it should be a mix of punts and proper picks I feel. Where is the fun in the game otherwise?

The belief that Salah has been anywhere close to a great captaincy option at that price is a myth.

13 million, no BAPS yet, no double digit haul, no brace or multiple attacking returns in a single game. If not for so many mid price players doing consistently well this season, people owning Salah wouldn't have got away with it.

I've captained Aguero and Hazard most weeks and it has paid off. Made the mistake of captaining Eriksen against Fulham based on his 'underlying' statistics in GW1 as I chickened out on captaining Aguero after the 'Kun will be benched against Huddersfield' hoax - my only regret so far this season apart from benching Mendy in GW1.

But if his stats are not pointing to a huge regression then surely paying 13m for something similar isnt going to be a problem?

But what is something similar? How similar? 250 points, is that enough? That's barely more than Mahrez got for 5.5m. 😕

When a player is priced 13m and starts with high ownership, his price won't run away. It has actually fallen. So it becomes a matter of choosing when to have him rather than whether to have him.

I had him since GW1 and decided not to remove him this week because I am eyeing GW9-14 as a set I will want him for. But he could well leave after that, especially if Kane looks in better shape by then. I expect to have Salah sometimes and not at other times and am always looking for the right moment to get rid. GW5 was one such possibility. GW15 may be another.

He' prob only been captained in 1-(2)-3-6 by most people? 8-9-8-8

Not sure what your aiming at tbh. An average greater than 8 is superb from captaincy

          8*38= 304 points.

To much is being made about "explosiveness".

I don’t think its losing the lustre, but the explosive points seem to be less frequent plus there’s a smaller pool of “obvious candidate” each week, this should change over time. The better and more expensive players are generally more consistent so a 2x 8 pointer is probably acceptable right now when in any given week they can just as easily blank

Fwiw, I skipped Kun/Haz last week to captain Vardy which worked out well for me

Fixtures often play a big part too and squad management is just as important

maybe on here it is, but that's because it seems to be the percentage play to be 'dullard' long term.

Pretty sure I've done the 'obvious' one every week and I've had a slight doubt in my mind each time about another option potentially being better, one of my (former casual) rivals is still way more maverick and has out-captained me almost every week.

I don't really understand posts like this. Some weeks have obvious captain choices, some weeks don't. It's just the nature of the game. Find edges elsewhere if captaincy isn't one of them.

Not at all. It's just how the fixtures have fallen this season, what with City and (to a certain extent) Pool having very easy starts. Even a monkey could have got it right more often than not.

I believe captain decisions are still the number one success factor in the game. My 3 first gws were terrible, captaining Ericksen and salãh, as the next 3 were very good, captaining haz and salãh. Currently in 100k OR that is not bad taking the first 3 in consideration.

And I think you missed a point. The fact that most players go after scout picks every week is turning Fpl in a template game. That makes captaining decision even more important, and the maverick choice even more appealing.

Captaincy is the key to winning FPL, it's the most important part of the game. Key is knowing when to go for a differential and when to pick the mainstream option.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years

Not true. It is important, yes, but running hot on captaincy isn't always the deciding factor. Last season the winner had the highest captain average in the top 12. The season before that was not the case.

If you think about it, teams will seldom get more than 350 points on captaincy, even the ones that run really hot. 2500 points are roughly what's needed to win FPL so captaincy isn't ever likely to represent more than 14% of that total. Even if you fall 2 points per GW behind on captaincy that's only 78 points difference and if your team is better managed in other areas (for example defender PPG) that wouldn't be insurmountable.

            Again, so much truth.

Its all about how you want to play the game. Some shave off millions in goal, defence, bench and some attacking slot in hopes of getting several premium captaincyoptions, preferably hitting the nail with their form and when to captain. Others take a more conservative approach and go by the "cant have them all" and might be more centred around 2-3 dependable captains, choosing to "spread the wealth" more costeffwctively.

Prob why we see that vastly different tactics can be effective. For me its about playing the game the way your comfrtable with. I've come to realise in the last couple of years that im not comfortable enough with juggling premiums in and out and going Mavericks with captaincy. I've started to look for more "certain" ways of getting points.

      • Sir David White
          7 years, 3 months ago

I think it's the scoring system overall that makes double captaincy points a problem. In the other fantasy game I play (AFL) we have a different scoring system where the players get points for every touch of the ball. Your 22 players on field may average around 90 points per gameweek. If you captain a guy who scores 110 and the rest average 90, his extra 110 points would only be about 5% of your total score. In FPL your captain may get 15 points but your average score per player may only be around 4.5. In that case, the extra 15 points wold be around 20% of your total score.

As a result the risks associated with a differential captain are just too high if you get it wrong. This forces people to play it safe, at least for the first 2/3 of the season. And when you look at guys like Ronke and Triggerlips who captain the poll leader virtually every week you can see that it basically works- so why take a risk?

This week for instance I would absolutely love to go with Richarlison at home to Fulham but with Aguero at 50+% and overwhelming captaincy favourite I risk massively damaging my season if he gets a 17 and Rich blanks.

Kane and Lukaku look the best alternatives. Richarlison and Mitrovic if you really want to go out on a limb but personally I wouldn't captain them over Aguero. If Kun gets his rest in the cup tonight he's locked in as my captain.

I dunno, Salah stats indicate he will do better than he has so far this season, he’s still the 8th highest scoring player this season despite underperforming.

But most of all it would be such a typical FPL thing for him to haul when so many sell or don’t cap him due to fixture.

Completely ignoring the fact that he's THE most expensive player in the game by some distance?

And your hopes of him hauling at Stamford Bridge is nothing but more speculation/fanboyism. Despite the terrific form that he was in last season, he couldn't hit a barn door against Chelsea when Liverpool played them at the bridge.

I am on a wildcard this week and I think my big decision boils down to the following:

              A) Trippier (with a bit of cash free to bring Mendy back in when he is fit), Pogba, Mane
              or
              B) Holebas, Richarlison, Salah

I prefer A but fear going without Salah! What are your thoughts?

                  B. Think Trippier's an unnecessary risk during this period, but many disagree.

Yeh that’s why I will probably end up going with the first option. I don’t like bringing in a player who is playing my team but feel Mitrovic could have a field day against us.

Hazard would have to score at least one or both of Mane & Salah to blank. Not worth it for me. You will want him back almost immediately

Can’t have all the premium options though, decide which one you want for the next 5-6 matches.

Also decide on a structure, it’ll cost you 2+ transfer for Kane->Salah over 1+ for Hazard->Salah if you wanted Salah back in

I probably go Kun -> Kane if you really want Kane in for next couple

                  Hey, I need some help.

Pereyra is not looking so appealing in my team anymore and want to get rid. Got 1FT, but looking at a hit to get Mitro and Fraser for Pereyra and Wilson. Good option? Or too sideways for a hit with Frase/Wilson?

Could also keep Wilson and just use FT on Pereyra to Richarlison? Or someone else around the price?

I’m leaning towards getting Mitro though cause his form is irresistible right now. Any help appreciated!

Mitro is a absolute slag this season( in a good way). I've had him from the start and it's been great. But, I would keep Wilson this week and use the FT to bring in Richy..

Could a mod explain the thinking behind the captain poll, please?

For example; Sterling is never on it and there’s a lot of questionable players on this weeks poll. Ings?! Who the heck would captain him away to Wolves? Mendy and Arnie are injury doubts and in my book far from viable options.

Just want to know a little more about the thought process behind it.

Also, as an alternative to the captain poll, it would be great if we could have a “differential of the week” poll as well. It would perhaps compliment the captaincy poll with some interesting outsiders with juicy fixtures.

                    Good questions.

I'd also like to see the poll tweaked in the wording to say 'who is the best captain' rather than 'who will you captain' in order to find the overall best option ... isn't that the whole point of the poll ?

Failing that ask both questions and have two polls but prefer a change in the wording

If it had the fixtures next to the player with that question, it might help people to chose someone other than their own captain. I'd imagine that a portion of voters with the old question just voted for their own captain because they couldn't be bothered to research the other options just for the sake of a poll. Seeing the fixtures could mitigate that effect slightly.

The issue is they don't ask for the best captain ... they specifically ask who managers will captain: 'who will be your GW7 captain' ... so extra info as you suggest will only help them choose the best captain in their team.

Is this the captain we want managers to choose or the best overall option regardless of whether they own them or not?

Isn’t it just Virg asking for more polls?

                      * Clean sheet of the week.

                      * Who’s the best captain

Clean sheet. Just another idea for a poll. Might help people decide who to bench.

There are lots of options.. I think we'll try not to have too many recurring polls.

But polls like 'Are you shipping Mendy this week' right after we hear he's injured are good ideas - basically, polls that are about pressing topics that keep getting asked about on site

Good idea. Might stop the relentless questions about the pressing topics but I guess a hot topic could be even better.

Yeah, could be good with people selecting multiple options, but it might take up a lot of space.

The directed ones will be nice because we can have a few of them.

But please, everyone, don't get mad at us for spoonfeeding when we have a poll collecting opinions on pressing questions 😀

I think this week Sterling was an oversight. Having the 'questionable' players aren't seen as a problem, really, as they can be ignored, so it's an attempt to get everyone on there. Also if a questionable player is missing often someone complains saying they would have captained them, so that's why they're there.

So the thought process is, essentially, let's try to get as many of the picks in there that people might go for (again, Sterling is at least one oversight this week).

The alternative polls are a good idea and we had talked about that pre-season. We'll get one up this week or next.

Thinking about Salah>Gudmunsson and Jiminez>Kane for the next two gameweeks. -4 hit this week but will save FT next week and switch back for Liverpools game against Huddersfield. Gudmunsson because Burnley play Cardiff and Huddersfield next 2 so not a bad punt.

Lot of people in my mini league with Kane so don't wanna go without for the next two games especially.

Sounds good if you really rate Kane. Shame to lose Jimenez though. One of the best value forwards over the next 5 games. I sold last week on a wildcard afte owning for only one gameweek, and wish I could have him as one of my midfielders instead.

Yeah I really rate Jiminez so a shame for him to go, but currently he would be on my bench for this weekend. My only worry about the whole plan is he or Salah have a great week and rise in price. I only have 0.2 to play with

-4 points and 3 wasted FT if no other injuries etc happens.
And you’ll lose Jiminez too, which is a good option.

In general Rich a much better player, I have him and Maddison because Leicesters fixtures are great for a while but of the two Rich a better choice. Saw at the weekend Everton basically played with him and Calvert-Lewin switching between being the central striker. I would expect him to become their main forward soon, Tosun looks awful

Perhaps not, but in general their fixtures are good until December and he is on set pieces so I'll be sticking with him and Rich for a while yet

Those with just Mane, are you planning to bring Salah in from GW9 onwards? If so, what are your planned moves? Their fixtures look too good not to double up in Liverpool attack. Huddersfield (A) Cardiff (H) Arsenal (A) Fulham (H)

I lost Salah on my WC last week & kept Mane. My plan this week is too lose mane for Richarlison & then bring Salah in from Hud as he will likely be back firing by then. I can do it without a hit by losing Monreal for a cheap & Pogba > Salah. That the plan anyway.... Kane may ruin all that after this weekend!!

I think Firmino and Robertson would be my 2 other Pool picks for GW9 onwards. Don't like Salah this season, something just doesn't sit right with me about him

I think Mendy out to a Spurs defender is a good shout, very strong chance of back to back clean sheets for them over the next two weeks. Will know by then whats going on with Mendy so can get him back in after they've played Liverpool

holding a transfer with that in mind - could equally move Salah and Zaha/Mitro on to Kane and Moura and keep Kun

I'm thinking of transfering out Moura this week (too much of a rotation risk) - have 1.7m in the bank.

                  Would you:-
                  a) straight swap to Richarlison and bank more money
                  b) straight swap for Alli - risky but great fixtures
                  c) Moura to Richarlison and Aguero to Kane -4
                  d) keep Moura

                  Any comments appreciated

I think it's better to hold Moura until its actually a problem. I certainly don't recommend getting Alli in - no form. It's more likely that Moura will play with Alli coming off the bench. Moura has been playing well - his spot to lose.
