FPL Question Time – Is it the end of premium defender triple-up?

Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers have answered some of your questions in time for your Gameweek 7 preparation.

The questions this week all centred around the potential shift in defence for Fantasy managers. Premium options in this position have been hugely popular since the start of the campaign but are starting to losing their appeal.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Who’s on the panel this week?

Az – Well-known name on Twitter and beyond, who cracked the top 1k in 2017/18 (finishing with an enviable overall rank of 817) after previously having recorded two finishes inside the top 5,000.

Joe – the host of our Scoutcast – plus many other weekly videos – and who sits 79th in our Career Hall of Fame, having recorded seven top 10,000 finishes in ten seasons of playing FPL (including an “OR” of 840 in 2013/14).

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

Question 1 – Az

With some decent budget defensive options emerging, would it be wise to move away from three premiums and pick two or even one, opting to rotate defenders and pump money further up the field to afford four premium attackers and a full playing squad?

A good question, and reminds me of last season, where preferred formations changed almost weekly. It’s really added a new dimension to Fantasy Football, as I remember in earlier seasons, moving away from a 3-4-3 formation was very dangerous and any more than one premium defender was seen as a rookie mistake.

“On first glance, it seems a good a time as any to move away from premium priced defenders if you are looking to invest in other positions. Mendy is carrying an injury, and both Alonso and Robertson have a couple of tough games.

“The problem is, I don’t suddenly think these players are going to be bad picks. They are just too consistent and are delivering week in, week out when they play. They have 12 assists between them in 6 gameweeks alone, so I think even if the clean sheets dry up, they are still likely to register attacking returns. Alonso remains the highest scoring player in the game, and Mendy sits on an average of eight points per game (Robertson isn’t far off on 6.8).

“When you factor in the fact that you can play these defenders almost every game and expect some points – suddenly the idea of trying to second guess who is going to emerge with points from the 4.5 defenders isn’t quite as appealing.

“Mendy and Alonso seem like season-keepers to me, due to their sheer attacking intent.

“It’s Robertson who I think might be the expendable one of the trio. A downgrade to Alexander-Arnold gives you a million in the bank to play with, and Trent proved last week that he is capable of getting attacking returns and even has a few set plays in his locker.

“For me, with Liverpool’s new found resilience and strong backline, a defender from their team is just as important as keeping hold of Mendy, Alonso and Wan-Bissaka. That leaves one defender spot up for grabs, assuming that you have Wan-Bissaka. There are certainly some brilliant options to go for, such as Jonny or Doherty (open play attacking prospects), Duffy (on the end of set plays), Holebas (taking free-kicks) and Chillwell (assist potential).

“Rather than looking to inject more cash up front, I’m considering a permanent switch to four, or even five at the back. This is the position where the points seem to be coming from at the moment.”

Question 2 – Joe

With Spurs’ good run of fixtures coming up, is it worth shipping Man City, Liverpool or Chelsea assets to bring in the likes of Trippier, Eriksen, Alli or Kane?

“I’m a firm believer that form follows fixtures.

“We have already seen that with Arsenal this season. The Gunners lost their first two tough games and since Gameweek 3 have beaten West Ham, Cardiff, Newcastle and Everton, scoring 10 goals along the way.

“We have already seen that to some extent with Tottenham. Against Brighton they showed renewed resilience. Winning and surviving a late onslaught from the Seagulls.

“That game, plus a fine run over the next three (hudd, CAR, whu) prompted me to get Kieran Trippier in on my Wildcard last week for Benjamin Mendy. I’d advise those still with the Frenchman in their side to do the same, unless we hear more positive news on his foot injury later in the week. Trippier’s price point also means it is simpler to get Mendy back in. The spectre of rotation always looms with the England full back, but a strong bench should cover that, especially as Trippier has either started or been given a full rest this season with no annoying one minute cameos.

“Christian Eriksen’s handing over of some set pieces to Trippier lessens his appeal in midfield, and I don’t think currently he can compete with premium midfielders from the likes of City, Liverpool or Chelsea.

“Up front though Harry Kane looks appealing. Five shots, all in the box and with just one being off target, against Brighton is the kind of underlying statistics I want to see from the Spurs striker. He looks an interesting captaincy pick this weekend away to the Terriers and especially desirable for the armband in Gameweek 8, when he hosts Cardiff and Liverpool face Manchester City.

“Which premium asset should make way for Kane?

“For me Aguero has to stay, but using money from selling Mohamed Salah to fund that move is something I’ll be seriously considering ahead of the Spurs frontman’s plum home tie with Neil Warnock’s relegation certainties.”

Question 3 – Holly

How much should we focus on getting Mendy out and is trippier the best option apart from template defenders?

“With no definitive news as yet on Mendy, I would try to stay patient until Friday before making a transfer out.

“With budget bench backup defenders like Wan-Bissaka and Ryan Bennett providing value, there should be options within our squads to replace his clean sheet potential.

“Personally, I’ve had Mendy since Gameweek 1, so would rather not transfer him out if it materialises that he’s fit for the weekend when I have profit tied up in him.

“It can be tempting to make a move though, and as price swings materialise, managers may need to act quick in order to bring the favoured replacement of Trippier.

“Consistent attacking returns, plus set piece responsibility and excellent fixtures make it a decent move on paper.

“However, Spurs have managed just one clean sheet and are without captain Lloris.

“Elsewhere, Laporte could be considered. City have kept consecutive clean sheets and he’s played every minute.

“To free up funds, consider a move for Wolves wing back Matt Doherty, with four favourable fixtures up next. Arsenal are another side with great fixtures, with full backs Bellerin and Monreal the best source of attacking returns.”

I think outside the top million would be edging towards the bad side for active managers. That's probably more generous than others will say since I'm at 500k myself!

Think as long as your in the top million 10k is achievable. However with the template starting so well I’d want to be top 100k at least if I was a regular to this site

After 9 GWs (1/4 of the way through) - if you are outside the Top 100k then that is a bad start IMO. But still a few GWs to go before then.

There's a long long way to go, so I'd say it would probably be only be outside the top two million or so for me at this point.

But it would be a concern that the majority of experienced managers have made strong to solid starts.

See Lucious Lizard below for an example of someone flying through the ranks after a bad start. There'll be plenty of similar examples from seasoned managers.

Around 100 points between a 2M OR and the top 50k. Far from insurmountable, although obviously a challenge with less margin for error.

I usually start off very badly and have gone from 2,8m at this point to 5,5k previously.
The template and FFS has had a great start this season, so I think it will be a bit more difficult to catch up, so I would say anything more than 500k with be a bad start.

I try to measure it by the amount of players that started in gw 2 and are above me. Current OR is 188.606 and gw1 is 188.594. So need to pass those 12 guys to consider it a good start. With 380 points - probably should be around 400.

Easily? tough enough getting top 10k in itself.
It's also more difficult when there's a template team, as all above you will have the same team after WC.
Most will soon have the same 7 in starting 11.
At the moment there's a about 120 points between 2m and top 10k.
Doable but wouldn't say it's 'easy'.

Thats like 100 points at this stage. Theres 30+ weeks more to go. Not that hard to outscore it by 3pts/pw. Went from 1.5mil to 10k from gw5/6 to gw13/15 in the last 2 years and Im a safe, templatey player.

Yep. Just a 2 gw experiment. Save another 2 free transfers and bring Salah back after City.

I don't even think Salah won't do well against CHE and City, it's just that I won't captain him over those 2 games so Sterling could very well match him and I think Richarlson obviously has the greater points potential over Neves.

I think it could be a smart move to maximize points gained over the next 2 gws.

Salah + Ings to Kane + Richarlson is also another option I've been considering but I'm weary of Ings rising popularity and the fact he's the best 3rd cheap striker in the game this season so don't want to end up having to pay too much to get him back.

Presumably you've done that so you can afford Kane so fair enough if that's the strategy. Stick with it - those four midfield options are strong and if you want to redistribute funds you can in two moves.

This week I broke my biggest rule and principle in FPL for the first time in over three seasons, namely to always go with your gut feeling before other peoples advice.
I had already planned Mendy > Bennett in order to get Ings > Vardy (C) ready for next gameweek. I was persuased by top ranked player in my league who went Mendy > Trippier and now I can't follow through on Ings > Vardy while he has a clear path to get Salah back for GW9 and I don't. Feel really bad about this transfer and it has already taught me a great lot about discipline and selfconfidence, all within a 24 hour window. Moral of the story: Always go with YOUR gut feeling. Trust your instincts.

It would be better and so less stresfull if the changes were only once a week (even up to 0.3mil) after deadline for example.

      I strongly disagree.
The current system works wonderfully and adds another element in the game.
No one is being forced to do early transfers - each manager has to decide whether price changes or more information is worth more every week.

Why would change the system to punish the managers prone to taking risks?
It is just as viable to do early transfers as being risk averse and waiting for more info.
Just different styles and another thing to consider.
Yes, it can be annoying that your target will rise before you are comfortable buying/selling, but that dilemma just adds another level to the game in my opinion.

I get what you are saying, but it can also be argued that if you have a long term plan for navigating GWs, you should be more prepared to do your transfers early on, when not basing it on weekly performances (barring injuries and team news etc).
Of course I find it extremely annoying being priced out / Forced to do an early transfer to be able to afford a target of mine. But overall, I think it’s a good part of the game and would be very sad to see it go.

AZ has answered above, but what are your thoughts to this question:

With some decent budget defensive options emerging, would it be wise to move away from three premiums and pick two or even one, opting to rotate defenders and pump money further up the field to afford four premium attackers and a full playing squad?

What is your plan and why? Who are you looking to get in or out and, importantly, what is it that makes you do this?

Obviously knowing the players you're thinking about is part of it, but why are you making the moves you are?

0 and haven't wanted one this season, a load of decent sub-5.0 defenders - a couple of which are on set-pieces...and one of which gets 9-points per clean sheet - no amount of sideways pass assists from Mendy or Alonso will tempt me 😉

Formation for me is always a function of available players and fixtures and never a variable. I don't mind playing 4-3-3 if that's how I can field my strongest players.

That being said, if there's still no news about Mendy on Saturday, I'll downgrade him and save the money to upgrade Mane to Hazard.

This is what I am currently planning to do on a week 9 wildcard. I see owning a Liverpool defender as essential, and Alonso is more than justifying his price too. The other premiums though are either rotation risks (man City, Spurs), out of fpl form (Man Utd, Arsenal), or injured (Mendy). Meanwhile, cheap players at Wolves are posting superb defensive stats, we have Wan Bissaka ripping it up for 4.3m (or 4.0 if you got on him early), and assets at other clubs performing steadily and about to imbark on superb runs of fixtures (Duffy, Yedlin, Chilwell, Holebas, etc).

The other nice side effect of this is enabling spend further up the pitch, when there are a number of expensive assets performing (Salah, Mane, Hazard, Aguero) or who may be desireable in weeks to come (KdB, Lukaku, Kane, Eriksen). The bench can be beefed up too ahead of rotation season. Personally speaking I haven't had a point on my bench for 3 weeks now!

I think you're spot on here.

I'm looking at Robertson Alonso and then cheaps (Shaw right now with Doherty and WB) at around GW9 or 10. Yedlin looks great and Holebas is so involved with his delivery, plus the others you mentioned and more.

And Duffy + Knockaert have some kind of understanding 😀

For me the pricing does the job of reclassifying. I can't see Alonso ever being a midfielder because as soon as he is you need to do it to other, lower priced players who aren't scoring or assisting. That takes them out of the game. Consistency is really important, I think, so if a team is playing 4 at the back they should all be defenders no matter how they're performing.

As for mids, Salah is one 100% for me, just as Mane is. Firmino is playing up front, not Salah. Again, if Salah is a forward then so many players would have to be as well. It would mean wholesale changes to the classification system

It depends on the game.... wingbacks sometimes play much more defensively against tougher opposition. Compare the heat maps... it's not black and white and often changes with formation week to week. If the manager moves to 3 centre backs, the wingbacks end up playing as wingers, but with a flatback 4 against Liverpool it changes significantly.

I think while we have decent, attacking big hitter defenders they will always be a viable option because they are so cheap ...relatively speaking and have so many ways of accruing points.

Big hauls are entirely possible for under 7m and don't take up a valuable attacking slot in the formation.

For me if they're out it's only short term, I'd be looking to get them in again if decent fixtures and any rotation concerns allayed somewhat.

This is how I feel about Mendy. I was happy to get rid but I'll be looking to get him back in when he's fit again.

Some worry over rotation but, with so many good budget options, a good bench isn't hard to get at all

I’ve dropped Mendy already. Made the switch to Laporte for gw6. If nothing happens that makes me change my mind up until gw10, I’m looking to downgrade Alonso as well.

Defense for gw10 onwards would be:

      TAA WanB Laporte Lascelles Shaw/Doherty

Good mix of value from the top two teams (Pool & City) and a good three way rotation for the last spot in a 352. It allows me to have a strong bench, a very potent midfield (including Salah) and one 11+ fwd with a form/fixture 6.5-7 mill fwd (Murray, Mitro, Arnie).

    12. Deulofail

I WCed in GW6 to just one big hitter, Alonso. He could become Robbo or Mendy when back, or I can easily downgrade a needlessly expensive (luxury) midfielder ot striker to get a second one when the time is right.

For me, there was no good enough reason NOT to exploit the value in Doherty, Jonny, Yedlin and AWB. Players like Vertonghen are "meh" in comparison to Alonso, Robbo and Mendy, and not worth the extra on the chep players I mentioned, in my opinion (unless you have nowhere you want to spend the money elsewhere).

      Alonso - Yedlin - Jonny - Doherty - Wan-Bissaka

I think Az is too influenced by points on the board already. It's early and although the rules are tweaked, there's never been a defender who is the highest scoring player at the end of the season or even on a pts per million basis although again, the wing back system being in vogue last season gave defenders more of a chance. Regardless of injury, Mendy is going to be rotated and so is Robbo. Maybe Alonso will if Chelsea reach the latter stages of the Europa but I'm more confident about his minutes but I think you are relying on attacking returns. Even Chelsea supporters on here will tell you Chelsea are edgy at the back and should have conceded to West Ham this weekend as well as HUD and BOU, their only CS's. Given the first two are rotation risks, you may as well go with a rotation risk midfielder or attacker who will get you more points at the season end. Robbo can be downgraded to TAA who seems to get an assist or two as well. I can only really see myself keeping Alonso because he really is basically an attacker. Holly's point about Mendy makes no sense either. She has "cash tied up"? Had she sold before last GW, she would have gotten 6.2, assuming she bought at 6. Switching to Trippier or to Alonso, she would have gotten not only a 0.1 rise from either option but also 4 (?) points from Trip and 6 from Alonso as well as avoiding what is now a double drop for Mendy. Now she only gets 6.1, which will drop again unless Guardiola says he's fit this week. So where's that cash? Her overall TV would have increased by ditching and she wouldn't be relying on budget options and may have the option of buying Mendy at the same price or cheaper when he cames back. Even now it would be even money with other price rises. That said, there are some teams that are looking great defensively who provide low cost options. Doherty at Wolva, AWB is a gift with great fixtures and TAA gives you great Liverpool exposure with not only an assist occasionally but also the jammy CS if he's going to get taken off when the game is tied up. IF Kane is back and IF Laca at Arsenal looks the real deal, these cheaper defenders can free up money to upgrade forward lines without having to ditch Salah or other premium mids.

Sticking to 3 premium def. Mendy, Robertson and Alonso are too good for me to waste transfers on when I have AWB, jiminez/Fraser and Bennett on the bench. If I had the funds to do Mendy to Trippier and then buy Mendy back when fit, I'd have considered it, but I don't.

Something J0e has been right about since last season (at some point), is this need to be "yogic". Years of playing this game has taught me you always need to be able to change strategy in a couple of moves because analyses of my scores in the past show that throughout the season, different formations are more productive than others. Going heavy on defence from GW1 has worked and there has been the WC to change it around but if you have no WC and a very high cost defence, it's all well and good having these players on the bench and playing subs but it means tying up cash you might need if forwards really start firing (or mids).

Dropping Mendy to put funds up front to fund 2 premium strikers, plus mitrovic.
Will be switching around the 2 premium strikers between aguero/kane/lukaku/lacazette/firmino over next 4 weeks.

      An idea for next 5
      GW7) Aguero (C) & Lacazette
      GW8) Kane (C) & Lacazette
GW9) Hold free transfer - keep kane (C) & Lacazette
      GW10) Firmino & Lukaku (c)
      GW11) Aguro (C) & Lukaku

      Any thoughts?

But overall the strategy is two prem defenders + AWB+Bennet+3.9m, two premiumish mids (but no salah) + 3 x 5.5m-7m, two premium strikers + mitrovic. Keep money in bank for greater flexibility to move players. If Mendy comes back, will replace for Robbo.

i'm now moving towards the fab 4 (have just swapped mendy for trippier but will bring mendy back in when he is fit) will then stick with that for the season.I think it just makes sense, for the difference of 2-3 million you can have cs potential and attacking returns from all 4 robbo, mendy, trip and alonso. this is a great base to start with. i can see spurs suring things up at some point too.

then 6 great and consistent mids and strikers. consistency is the key imo

Is all about the flexibility, mon.

When they are fit and as long as they keep their spot in the team, I would rather have Trippier, Robbo, Alonso AND Mendy, than go without. With cheapos in midfield like Richie, Fraser and Ward, and FWDs like Ings, Mitro and Wilson, you can easily spend on premium defs with high assist/goal per game ratio.

But, right now, I only got Tripp and Alonso. So will look into getting a third premium in a few weeks, depending on other urgencies in my team ^^

No change in strategy for me. With AWB and Bennett more than happy to step up, I'm happy to retain Robbo and Alonso along with Mendy as soon as he's back.

I can get a fair amount of points with cheap 4 - 5.1 defenders.
This does not hold for midfielders or attackers. Cheapeast picks are around 5.5, and that small differences makes it harder to fund the Salah and others.
Besides in terms of value, I prefer benching AWB and Bennett, rather than Ings or Fraser, as it allows me to have more money on the field. And I also avoid cameo because these cheap defenders can actually play and bring home the bacon

So I kept only 1 premium defender, but will play 3-4-3 most likely

I guess with 2 premium defenders, 4 in the back becomes interesting. Real question is, will a Mendy outperform a Maddison/Richarlison or Mitrovic this season ? I personnally don't think so

Wan-Bissaka & Bennett are gifts, they were free and are delivering. This makes it easy to invest in 3 big hitters. We were all talking about these guys as a 4th def or even a 5th and we're so lucky to be able to hold them in a 3-4-3 due to the plethora of good 5.5 - 7.0 'attackers'.

I think we need to see player form to force our hand before we go moving money/players around.

We still don't have a clue on Mendy's return date.

A double digit score from a low owned but historically strong FPL asset would put the cat amongst the pigeons.

        Depends on Mendy fitness

Ill play my wildcard in international break and expect to have:

Alonso, Trent AA, AWB, a wolves defender and hopefully mendy

So that is 2 heavy hitters and trent rather than robbo

      5.
Got Luiz, Alonso, Walker, Mendy and Robbo.
Had planned to lose Robbo to gain enough for a Kun to Kane move but seems it will have to be Mendy that goes now.
In any case, the number is still 5.

On WC, thinking to roll with cheapies

      TAA, Yedlin, AWB, Doherty, Bennett

And allow me to field Kun, Kane, Salah and Hazard

I currently have no heavy hitters and have only owned robo this season which i dumped gameweek 6 on the wildcard my dearest defender is now luke shaw who i have had from the start.

Defenders have started well but over a season i dont think it will work playing 4 or 5 at the back my wildcard team is
      Hart (button)
Doherty shaw wb ( smith) (bennet)
      Mane hazard maddison fraser (billing)
      Kane aguero laca

Currently own 3 heavy hitter defenders.

Most prob will ditch Mendy for Doherty because I need funds to sign Richarlison.

In a bit of a pickle. Wildcarded last week and got rid of Salah for Hazard and now having the post-Salah blues. So eyeing up getting him back or going against my mini-league and trying something different. 2 options are

Mane + Zaha -> Kane and 5.5m mid

    or

    Mane + Wilson -> Salah + 4.5m forward fodder

    Any thoughts appreciated

GTG for next week? Used my FT to do Mendy -> AWB.

    Ederson
    Robbo - Alonso - PvA
    Haz - Mane - Ozil - Fraser
    Aguero - Mitro - Ings

    Hamer || AWB - Cook - Guendouzi

    2.1 ITB

Are Shaw and trippier to much rotation risk alongside Alonso with AWB and Doherty as bench cover?

    1. Jarnathan

      5 years, 6 months ago

I don't think so. I think Shaw is first choice and we'll see tomorrow night about Trippier, but I suspect Aurier will play instead.

AWB, Alonso and Doherty are already nailed. It's a decent back 5, even if you have a poor bench.

    Hennessey, Hamer

0.5 ITB. Took a -4 to remove Alonso and Lingard for Hazard and Duffy.
